Outfitter Review: Circle H Ranch - Texas
Outfitter / Owner: Charlie Harris
Hunter: Derek Alexander
Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer
After we paid Charlie we never saw him for the rest of the week, he is purley after the money. We had to drive our own vehicle from the camp to were we hunted. The stands have been hunted every morning and evening of every day since the begening of the season. There is no such thing as a fresh stand or a trophy deer on the Harris Ranch. The only way you will have a shot at a mature buck is if he is drunk and lost from his home on another ranch. We learned our lesson if you are going to book a hunt in Texas spend the extra money on a reputable outfitter, even if you have to save your money for an extra year. (the extra year of saving money is better than a year of pain you get from being SCREWED at the Circle H Ranch)

I WILL ADD TO THE LIST THAT THE LAST GUYS HAVE MENTIONED. I HAVE TRAVELED ACROSS THE U.S. AND PARTS OF CANADA HUNTING AND THIS PLACE IS A REAL JOKE. YOU CAN NOT SELL HUNTS TO KILL QUALITY 3 1/2 YEAR OLD DEER IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THEM. THE GUYS IN CAMP WERE MOVED OFF OF A RANCH SO SOME PERSONAL FRIENDS COULD HUNT THERE. I KNOW THAT THE HARVEST OF AN ANIMAL IS ONLY ONE OF THE REWARDS OF HUNTING, BUT YOU SHOULD BE HONEST ABOUT THE QUALITY OF GAME YOU HAVE. PLEASE READ THESE REVIEWS ON THIS PAGE AND DO NOT THINK BECAUSE WE DID NOT HARVEST AN ANIMAL WE ARE ANGRY, BUT I DO NOT LIKE TO SEE PEOPLE SPEND THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY AND NOT BE GETTING THEIR MONEY'S WORTH.

Owner never gave a straight answer. Think it is a scam to begin with. Out of 10 hunters in camp none saw a shooter (8 pt with 16 inside spread). We were removed from our stands and replaced by people who weren't in camp. I believe his references are personal friends of the owners. Run away!! I have been on hunts across the US and understand that harvesting is a bonus. I cannot express how unhappy I was with this hunt.

This place is the biggest rip off you've ever seen. Stand placement sucks, stands squeak and some lean and they will fall over with you in them. Never saw the so called deer guru (JJ Reynolds) after the first day. Questioned him about the land owner and all of the cows that would be feeding under your stand. This is a CATTLE RANCH not a hunting ranch. Save Your Money. Don't waste your time.
Outfitter Review: Double T Ranch - Texas
Outfitter / Owner: Chris McDaniel
Hunter: Dean Robichaux
Animals Hunted: Whitetail,Exotics
This is without a doubt the most impressive place I have ever been.I take alot of clients hunting, and have been to plenty of places but this is heads and tails above any place I have ever been to.You have a private room with all facilities and a lodge that is an architectual creation from a roaring fireplace to a grotto with a pouring waterfall. The food is excellent with service that rivals a 5 star restaurant.Hunting is done from blinds overlooking huge foodplots to safari style from a high rack truck. We harvested a 41" Oryx,2 gold medal rams, and a 29 3/4 " Aoudad that weighed 278 lbs. This ranch covers over 7700 acres. The hunting at times is tough in that Chris McDaniel, the outfitter, only targets true trophy animals.Over the 2 days I hunted 2 Blackbucks with horns over 27",but although I saw them twice ,I couldn't get a clear shot.Although I was unsucessful, this is a real hunt and I enjoyed it as much as other hunts I have harvested animals. If you want to experience the most fabulous of accomodations along with a challenging hunt for true trophy class animals, the Double T Ranch in Sabinal,Texas is the place for you.

I had a great time lots of Quality animals. Took a 23 pt. Fallow and 9 pt. Red deer. Only problem with the place is transporation to field they take you out in a mule ATV. It was raining some and was wet and dirty. But other than that I give the place a A Rating.

This was my third time back and it just keeps getting better. The range conditions were great due to the rain this year so the Bucks should have extra inches on the racks when compared to other years. Everyone contibutes and you can see it from the time you arrive to the time you leave. Thanks for a great time and another great hunt.

The ranch is approximately ten miles from George West, Texas. All accomodations were included in price of hunt (food and hotel). Several of the individuals we hunted with last year (2001) shot bucks that scored 149 1/8 and 158 7/8. I personally shot a nice nine point that scored 136. The guides let us take a hog and a doe at no additional charge. We had an enjoyable barbeque the Saturday night after our hunt.

My guide Don Wade took time to show me around the ranch to spot other game and put an excellent stalk on a Bison that I took. I also went in their Outback area and did not expect to see as much game there (took a nice Texas Dall). I found it was overall a very enjoyable hunt as I will return and bring my son with me next trip.

Animals Hunted: Hog/Javelina
This was our second trip with Klint, and we all had a great time. Klint has access to lots of country and there are tons of deer, turkeys, hogs, and javelina around. On this trip, we shot several nice hogs and those who wanted them also shot javelina.Klint knows the people, the country, and the animals (habits, habitat, etc.) very well. He's a very nice guy, honest, and works hard to make sure you're satisfied and successful. He's a pleasure to hunt with. We'll be back next spring for the third time. At some point, we'll likely take advantage of the other hunts he offers.

Animals Hunted: Axis & Blackbuck
This is an excellent hunt for the two species listed above. I took two excellent quality animals, a 31" Axis & 21" Blackbuck. With regard to the Axis, I saw two huge 36"+ animals that got by me during the hunt. These were truly 'monster' bucks in anybody's book. This is a high fence hunt, but let me assure you that the animals hunted were very wild and spooked easily. The cover, terrain, and acreage provided the game with numerous escape opportunities. If you let one walk, the odds were that you would not see it again. Hunting over food plots or feeders now will be ineffective due to heavy browse and natural food available ( Texas has seen a lot of rain this year ). Best bets are to hunt 'safari style' from a vehicle or glass & stalk by foot. The outfitter was a good host and enjoyed me bringing my family along. He also takes care of your meat and trophy care as part of the hunt cost.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail/Exotics/Sheep/Hogs/Turkeys/
I booked a 3 day Exotic/Whitetail hunt package. This hunt was for any horned exotic animal, unlimited hogs, unlimited bass fishing. Had it been whitetail season it would have been, any horned animal or whitetail buck, whitetail doe, unlimited hogs, hen turkey, unlimited bass. If an additional horned exotic was taken a fee would be charged. The Lodge was beautiful! It was the home of the original ranchers built in the thirties. You will hunt on 16,000 acres in ground or tier blinds. They have 71 blinds throughout the ranch. The lodge was like stepping back into the old Spanish days. Yet it is well maintained and very clean. Families especially will enjoy this place. They make sure everyone is happy including the kids. Now for the game. I was hoping for an Axis Deer, and possibly a Hog or two. My three days started in with an afternoon hunt followed by the morning hunt.Day 1 afternoon, I saw 6 Axis does, one Fallow doe and two Axis bucks. The bucks weren't the size I wanted so I passed. Day 1 morning I passed on a huge boar (still kicking myself) and harvested a smaller boar for the meat. Day 2 afternoon, saw a Sika spike a Sika doe and passed on it. Day 2 morning, saw a Sika doe and could smell some sheep in the area. Got ousted out of the blind because of swarm (50,000+)of daddy long legs decided it was their place. (This is Texas you know.) They don't bite but they do like the shady spots. Make sure your in a blind that gets sun and gets warm.Day 3 afternoon, my guide dropped me off at a blind after we saw 6 Axis deer around it. 5 mins. after he left, 12 of them spooked including 3 nice sized Axis bucks. A smaller buck came back and I harvested him. Several hours later a HUGE BOAR came through but I was not able to get on target in time. Day 3 Morning, I was in a Tier blind and had 20 plus sheep of several different species all around me. I picked the best looking one for mounting and harvested a Texas Apricot Dall Sheep. This was my second horned animal so a fee was due. It was worth it!The longest shots here will be under 200 yards. Bring a thermos for the blinds as it gets very hot depending on the season. I was there June 26th. If you have a video camera I would get a window mount and bring it. You will be able to record all types of animal and capture your harvest on video.Animal care was done by my guide. He even made arrangements for the taxidermist to pick up my animals. He then transported the meat to a local game processor who made arrangements with me to ship the custom processed meat to my front door 1700 miles away. If your looking for a hunt to start your son/daughter/wife out on, this is the place to go. Comfortable beds, shower/bath, and good meals.Contact Rio Bonito Ranch at:1-800-864-4303 Ask for GwenWeb site:www.riobonito.com

Animals Hunted: Spring Turkey
We hunted the last weekend of Spring Turkey season. The gobblers were not responding to calls as they had plenty of hens. This was common throughout Texas early and late in the Spring Turkey season. The guides worked hard to go the extra mile. The Double C Ranch was a first class facility. Even though no Turkey were harvested, the staff made our trip rememberable. The bass fishing, skeet range, wonderful food and amenities at the ranch made for a wonderful time for all.

Outfitter Review: Pecan Creek Ranch - Texas
Outfitter / Owner: Mike Freeman

Animals Hunted: Rio Grande Turkey
Outfitter advertised Rio Grande Turkey Hunts. He had approx. 500 acres leased and no birds on the property. The adjacent properties did hold a few birds, but the property he had leased to hunt bordered a county road and the birds stayed away. The hunt included all meals and lodging. The lodging was fine however, the breakfast consisted of packaged rolls. (The outfitter didn't want to get up) This was an expensive bed and breakfast place and the only good meal of the day was dinner. The quail hunting maybe better but save your money and stay away from the turkey hunting.

Outfitter / Owner: Edmund/J Pat Tom
Hunter: John Wells
Animals Hunted: javelina
I bowhunted for javelina on the Edmund Tom Ranch. Even though I was not successful, it wasn't for lack of game, or effort on their part. 2 of the 4 days were very windy, and 1 day was unusually cold! I saw javelina the 1st 2 evenings, but it was late & they were out of range with only a few minutes to try & execute a stalk. After setting up a ground blind one evening close to a feeder, they heard my chair squeak while I tried to rise to shoot @ 15 yards, and the next p.m. they had their eyes glued to the blind, and would not let me draw. Very exciting! I also saw a couple of nice deer, and had a flock of 15 turkeys within 20 yards of me. (I was able to draw due to the wind, but it wasn't turkey season, so I could only pretend!) I called a bobcat to within 15 yards, but could not draw without spooking him. So, I enjoyed myself so much that I plan on going back next turkey season!

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer, Javelina, Antelope, predators, tur
Jim Roche, and Magnum Guide Service, offer the highest quality outfitting I have experienced. I have hunted with them in New Mexico (antelope) and Texas (whitetails, javelina, turkeys, predators, and exotics), on numerous occasions. Jim also hunts in Wyoming (elk, mule deer), and Alaska (bear, moose, caribou, etc.) Jim is the most professional outfitter I have ever delt with. He, and his wife Melony, are on top of all the issues related to a hunt - from the research to booking to the hunting experience. There is never a need to try and figure out what you need to bring, or IF they have you scheduled - information flows from their operation. You get timely contracts, trip planners, etc. Lodgings range from good, to great, depending upon the hunting location. Food is always excellent, with plenty of it.Jim has the game! It is great to be able to see a lot of quality game during the course of a hunt - all free-range (with exception of exotics). Check out his web site - www.magnumguideservice.comThere are plenty of recent photos to document their success, and it is a great web site as far as being able to get all the information.I may sound like a walking advertisement, but after hunting all over North America, I have come to the conclusion you won't find a better outfitter. I've hunted with them enough to know that there is consistency - it isn't a crap shoot. You know how good things are going to be. If for some reason there are problems (ie. poor turkey hatch), Jim will let you know. Feel free to contact me for further information. One of my favorite things to do is to hunt with Jim/Melony at Magnum. I always make sure to schedule at least one hunt a year with them, no matter what else is planned.

I have hunted with Jim and Melony Roche and Magnum Guide Services several times. This review applies to an excellent whitetail hunt I took with them in November, 2001. I killed two beautiful bucks, a 9 point and a 10 point. Both were definitely shooters, probably in the 130 inch class. I saw shooter bucks everyday. I hunt with MGS every year and plan to continue doing so. I recommend them to my friends all the time. They are truly an exceptional outfit.

Animals Hunted: Corsican Ram, Texas Dall, Catalina, Painted Desert
This is my second hunt with Roland at the T-post Ranch. This ranch is located on 1500 acres of rolling cactus, mesquite, and thick brush - not a "canned" hunt; the majority of the hunt is spot and stalk, physical effort is required. I am a 40 year old woman who just took up bow hunting last year. My two guides worked their asses off -in the end I harvested a Super Gold Medal Corsican Ram which scored 100 4/8 inches. This will definitely be an annual trip.

Outfitter Review: Horwood River Ranch - Texas
Outfitter / Owner: Larry Horwood
Hunter: Brian Hickson
Animals Hunted: Whitetail, Turkey, Quail, Axis
Nothing Larry said was true. We signed a year-round lease with him. We were supposed to have the rights to all legal game as stated by TPWD. On numerous occasions we caught him with other hunters on the property. He let another outfitter come in with his clients to shoot some axis deer. Under no circumstances would I believe anything Larry or his family says. They vandalized some or our hunting equipment when they held a family party at the camp grounds. The drinking got out of control and they tried to start a four wheeler with a screw driver. He told us we couldn't hunt the extended doe season because it was a special season, but once we reviewed the contract that he set forth and signed he reconsidered and promised he would not bring in the group of hunters he had scheduled to bring in. Needless to say, the last weekend of doe season he brought in 15 hunters that drove all over the ranch shooting at every doe they saw. This was very dangerous as we were hunting in our stands and they had no idea where we were. Someone could have been killed easily by a stray bullet.

Animals Hunted: whitetail and exotics
My father and I went on our first Texas hunt at the West Kerr ranch the 1st weekend of the whitetail season in 2001. The hunt was great, we both got a nice whitetail buck each and saw numerous game. The ranch is not overrun with exotics but there are some nice exotics to be had. I shot a nice 8 pt. Sika buck, a 250+ lb. boar hog, and a 34" axis deer in addition to my whitetail buck on the 5 day hunt. I would highly recommended this ranch.

Outfitter Review: Five-Star Hunting - TX
Outfitter / Owner: Stan Smiley

Animals Hunted: WHITETAIL DEER
I booked this hunt through Wade Derby at CrossHair Consulting. The hunt was listed as a special or closeout at a reduced rate. For the money I paid, the hunt was satisfactory, but it would have been a big disappointment at the normal price of (3-Day @$2250) and (5-day @$2750). I just did not see the deer that one would expect to see in South Texas. I saw @ 15 does and @ 7 young bucks during my two day hunt. I killed a young 8 -pointer and a doe, so my particular hunt was a success. My fee was $250 daily with a $250 kill fee for a buck of my choice. It is my opinion that the outfitter has overhunted his property. His hunter success ratio is probably less than 30% based upon my conversations with him, and of course my hunt with him.

Bowhunted whitetail deer on Bill Whitfield hunt Oct 2001 on the Lohn Ranch. Saw several nice bucks over the four days and shot a 124 6/8 eight pointer. This was not the biggest deer I saw - I sppoked a ten pointer at about ten yards that was significantly larger than the deer I shot. I also shot a doe on this hunt. I have already booked again with BIll Whitfield at the Perlitz Ranch for the 2002 bow season.

Very nice ranch with game everywhere. I was able to stalk and shoot a great Blackbuck that will make the R.O.E. and passed on a 250-lbs hog (I'm kicking myself). The sheep are plentiful and many are huge. The hunt will be one I will remember forever. Paul and Don are great cooks and make you fell right at home (they have some funny stories to pass the time too). I will be going back for one of those HUGE Fallow Deer very soon. Give these guys a call, you won't regret it.

The JD Cox operation is the nearest thing to robbery without committing a crime that I have ever saw. The condition of the stands, the accomadations and the overall laziness of the so-called camp managers is the worst I have ever experienced.Operations like this should be outlawed!

Outfitter / Owner: Hugh Starr

Animals Hunted: Rio Grande Turkeys
I was successful in taking my two longbeards on this hunt, but the outfitter was arrogant and overbearing. A hunter from Pennsylvania (police officer) had taken his "first" turkey ever, was delighted to have it, and was even going to have it mounted. It was a jake. The outfitter gathered all the hunters together and chastised and belittled this poor guy for taking a jake. I knew something was wrong when we arrived and he demanded his money up front, even before we unpacked, and then proceded to inform us that the kitchen was off limits to the hunters. The turkey hunt was advertised as a turkey, hog, and bobcat hunt. I didn't care about the hogs or bobcats, but the other hunters in camp had come to hunt hogs too. There were no hogs seen. When asked where the hogs were, the guides explained that they were there, but it was the wrong time of year to see them - yeah right! We saw one bobcat on the side of the road while driving back at night and he quickly stopped the truck and wanted us to shoot it. We didn't, and he chewed us out. Deer hunters beware, I only saw a few does while turkey hunting.

Quantity of game sighted was better than expected considering that it rained most of the time that I was there. Texas received one-third annual rainfall when I was there. Even with these terrible conditions, I took a 150+ class deer. Mark said never exaggerated the quality of the deer like most places do. He said to expect to see 120 - 130 class deer. To my surprise I did much better. If you are looking for a different type of hunt, this is it! It is a western type hunt of spot and stalk. The ranch has very little hunting pressure. My buddy wounded a 140+ class buck which was not recovered

The guides would not even get up in the morning. When asked where to go they simply shruggled their shoulders. Ten of us were in camp and no one saw a muledeer buck. Everyone hunted extremely hard but no muledeer were taken, only a small basket-rack whitetail. We were not told about the hundreds, of sheep that had overgrazed the 10,000 acres ranch. If you like to give your money away and fight off sheep this is the outfitter for you.

This was a return trip and the Ranch just keeps getting Better! You can see the improvements and I have no doubt it will continue. I hunted the 1st weekend in November (Full-Moon) and except for the full moon and it shutting down the Hog Movements it was great! Lesson learned - don't go after Hogs on a full moon unless you just can't go any other time(Like I had too). There are going to be some BIG BUCKS taken from here in the coming month - Good Luck everyone and let those management bucks walk and grow - up a little more.

I would recommend this hunt for only the serious trophy whitetail deer hunter. This ranch is strictly managed, only 5 1/2 year old bucks can be harvested. So be prepared to let 140 - 160 class 4 1/2 old bucks walk! I went on the platinum hunt and I harvested a 166 4/8 (gross) 14 pt buck and I also killed a wild hog. This buck is the largest scoring whitetail I have ever harvested.Check out there website at www.ggracnh@wfhawk.com

I would recommend the outfitter because he did everything he could to put us on deer. He was a good host and catered to the individual needs of his customers. However, I think the area of South Texas, "the golden triangle", is highly over-rated! I live & hunt in Alabama and any of the bucks I saw could have been seen here.

Jason and his father JD were great people to be associatd with, this hunt was great for the off season, WE went for hogs and hadn a great time. The animals were numerous and plenty wild. You definitely had to hunt them. Out of four hunters we killed eight hogs. Prices were very, very reasonable. Our trip was two nights in the lodge and two hogs skinned and quartered for $290. $250 if you wanted to clean them yourself. They really went out of there way to make it an enjoyable hunt. I will be back. The other 3 in our party feel the same way.

We were the second group of hunters to turkey hunt. All hunters in the first group had their 2 turkey limit by the 2nd day of their hunt and all hunters in our group had their birds by the 2nd day. I saw and heard several longbeards. I got to work 8 different gobblers in 1/2 day of hunting. I was successful on my first set up, then moved to a different location and called a bird in "too close". After he left (quickly) I called in another pair and finished my hunt all too soon.

This was a great hunt. The ranch has lots of hogs. This outfitter has lots of feeders and stands so that the stands get rotated. In the 2 days I was there no stand was hunted more than once. The ranch manager, Leo Martinez is very personable and works really hard to take care of everyone. The stands are set up for bowhunting with the corn feeders less than 20 yards from the stands. There were also some gun hunters when I was there. I was bowhunting and missed a huge boar and passed on several sows before shooting a nice sow.

Animals Hunted: Mouflon Sheep
My father and I hunted mouflon sheep on a 2 day package hunt. We saw a fair number of sheep but most were ewes and all were extremely spooky. I did manage to shoot a 28" mouflon on the first evening of the hunt but my father never got a shot opportunity. I was hoping to also shoot an aoudad but there are not many if any on the on the ranch. Kelsy Kana, our giude did work hard to get find game but the sheep didn't coopperate. Although there were fewer aminals than I had thought there would be, I may return in the fall for a Sika deer hunt. My only other negative comment was Kelsey ripped my mouflon's cape when skinning it out.

Richard has been in the business for 14 years and knows his stuff!! I've hunted with a lot of "outfitters" in Texas, but richard is the best by far. He knows the game because he is still hands on everyday. He has over 30 places that are all full of highest quality game. He had taken over 30 top 10 SCI trophies while I was there, and has taken more since. His prices are so affordable and the quality is excellent. With Richard, you shoot your trophy, take your pictures, and go back to hunting. He does all the meat processing, caping, and taxidermy if you want. Can tell you there is NO place like Richard's and no better guide on the planet!!

Animals Hunted: Deer and Hog
I recently returned from my second trip to the Edmund Tom Ranch. Had a fantastic time! Scheduled the hunt so that I could hunt hogs, does, and spikes at the same time. As always, J. Pat did an excellent job of locating the game and positioning the hunter. His help and expertise, combined with plentiful game, allowed me to arrow three hogs, two does, and one spike. Most successful single hunt ever.Let me me tell you just how great this ranch is. For this trip, I drove 2,152 miles round-trip to hunt the Edmund Tom Ranch. This is the second trip and hunt, so I've driven 4,304 miles to hunt twice at the Edmund Tom. There are literally hundreds of places between Phoenix and Campbellton (S. of San Antonio) I could have hunted. But I by-passed all of them to hunt the Edmund Tom Ranch. I would do it again too. In fact, four of us are going back in a few weeks for more hog and javelina hunting. And another group of us is scheduled for hog hunting in late March. You have to try the Edmund Tom Ranch. Edmund and J. Pat have a great operation, plentiful game, and they treat you like family. Make certain you give them a call and schedule a hunt. You will be very pleased.
