Outfitter Review: North Texas Outfitters - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Paul Cantrell/Craig Woods

Hunter: Allen Evans

Animals Hunted: Exotics

I have hunted at NTO numerous times and will continue to return. My 2 sons and I have shot many trophy animals during the years (gold, silver and bronze). During the X-mas holidays we hunted in their Outback pasture and shot 2 gold medal sheep. NTO is a great place to hunt. The guides/personnel are truly some of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to hunt with. It would be hard to find a better Texas style hunting ranch. Give them a call.

Outfitter Review: Blanco Creek Ranch - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Susan Moulton/Shorty Smith

Hunter: Patrick Munn

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer, Exotics, Hogs, Turkey

Susan Moulton and her husband Shorty Smith own and operate Blanco Creek and Running M Ranches, west of San Antonio. You simply cannot imagine the quality that abounds in all facets of their operations. Susan and Shorty personally take care of their guests, and it takes only a few hours to feel like you are family. Facilities, food, service, and equipment are all top-of-the-line. The deer available are whitetail from management bucks through top-scoring book animals, and they are plentiful beyond description. Oryx, blackbuck, sika deer, fallow deer, and other exotics are available, as are wild boar, feral hogs, turkey, quail, javelina, and elk. The first morning I was in the blind I shot a nice 10 point about 30 minutes after sunrise. I could have waited and possibly taken a larger buck but was limited on time and wanted to take a deer.If you are considering a Texas deer or exotic hunt, you owe it to yourself to check out Blanco Creek Ranch. Call Susan or Shorty at 210-828-6509.

Outfitter Review: Four Arrows - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Wayne Peeples

Hunter: Bruce

Animals Hunted: Nilgai, Hogs, Javalina

Upon arrival,we learned that the King ranch had canceled the lease with four arrows as of 3-31-01.Everything was geared for the big dollar hunters and part=time guides taking hunts for money owed. Guides wanted tips, and many stands were off limits as big money hunters wanted that area. people were rude, and not helpful. Not what I was told when I booked the hunt.

Outfitter Review: Shamrock Safaris - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Irvin Pense

Hunter: Jim Benham

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

This hunt was to be a first hunt present for my 12 year old grandson. Arrival at camp was without event other than the 17 inches of snow which North Texas roadways could not handle. The first morning of the hunt, my first time hunter, son-in-law was taken to a hunt site and left to his own means. He did shoot a nice buck in the snow the first morning. Prior to the hunt the owner had been told that I have certain needs as far as food is concerned. Namely that I am a diabetic and can not eat only high carbohydrate foods. That did not seems to register as I was given foods such as sugared tea, beans and cornbread, etc. There was no attempt to accommodate. After we left on the third day of the five day hunt I was informed by my son-in-law that he found hair in almost everything he tried to eat.Now comes the interesting part and the reason I left the hunt early. The owner and several of his "old friends" found it necessary to speak in very discriptive language about racial minorities and what should be done to them to make the country better. After the third day of this disgusting behavior up to and including how they would like to kill certain, black football players, the three of us decided that enough was enough. While leaving my son-in-law called the owner on the cell phone to tell him of our decision and the fact that we were leaving. He could have cared less that we were unhappy and left. He made no effort to speak to us then nor has he done so since then. This was a totally disturbing experience for a 12 year old boy to be subjected to.By the way after paying fees we were expected to pay for gas for the vehicles we used. He also wanted us to buy our own propane bottles for his "heated blinds".I would not care his this outfit had deer behind every bush I could not be good conscience return to this kind of environment.

Outfitter Review: Las Palamos Outfitters - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Allen Felts

Hunter: Skip Berry

Animals Hunted: Deer

Allen runs a first rate operation. He has lots of deer and is very careful about how many bucks he takes each year to keep the quality up. I hunted over New Years, everything working against me...post rut, last hunter to hunt the ranch for the year, yet I still saw 15-25 bucks a day when I hunted with him and saw a couple of REAL NICE deer, that I didn't get a shot at. I eventually took a pretty "little" 8 point.Deer camp is a converted one room school house which was cozy even during a freezing spell. Allen is as good a cook as he is deer guide and stuffed me to the gills.I will be going back for sure.

Outfitter Review: Circle H Ranch - Tx

Outfitter / Owner: Charlie Harris

Hunter: Chad Faulkner

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

This was our second year there. There were three people in my group. We all killed. I shot a real heavy horned 140 class 9 pointer, and passed up two shooters prior to that. My partner shot a 135 class deer, and the other guy with us killed a decent 8 pointer, a bobcat, a huge hog, and a javelina. We met 5 guys there from Ar they all killed at Tilden that week. There were 11 bucks killed that week. Circle H is not a 5 star resort where you drink cocktails out by the pool, its one hell of a down home south Texas ranch that's affordable. If your a true fair chase hunter, I recommend Circle H to you.

Outfitter Review: Double D Ranch - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Dean Dermody

Hunter: Ben Mcdaniel

Animals Hunted: Whitetails

This was my first trip to Texas on a deer hunt and the sheer numbers of bucks were overwhelming. Dean has literally hundreds of bucks in the 110-140 B&C range and some bigger bucks as well. However, due to the fact that his 20,000 acres has been under management for only 3 years, his bucks havn't reached their full potential yet. So if your lookin for a 170 incher, give Dean a couple more years and he'll have some.

Outfitter / Owner: Charlie Harris

Hunter: Brett Boice

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

This hunt is advertised as a Trophy Deer Hunt with a 100% success. I guess success has many definitions, but taking a deer must not be one of them. We had over 25 hunters the week we were there, and only one "penalty" buck was taken. I'm not sure we were intentionally misled, but from the numbers of hunters we had and the numbers of previous hunters, there would be no chance of coming close to a 100% success rate.

Outfitter / Owner: Allen Felts

Hunter: Skip Berry

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

Allen Felts has a great thing going down there. Deer everywhere, everytime we left the camp. Approx 1:1 buck doe ratio. Hunted over the New Year and Allen warned me it would be "slow" being late season and post rut. Well, let me tell you, "slow" on Allen's ranch means "only" seeing 7-15 bucks at every stand. I also "only" saw two monsters that made my eyes bug out but couldn't get a shot at them. Hill Country ranch, bucks might not match South Texas day in - day out, but neither does the price tag. Reasonable cost for this quality. Email or call me anytime.

Animals Hunted: WHITETAIL DEER

I SHOT ONE OF TWO DEER OUT OF 13-15 HUNTERS. IT WAS A SMALL 8PT, AND IT COST ME AN EXTRA $1000. IF YOU GO, MAKE SURE IT IS EARLY IN THE SEASON, BECAUSE THEY SHOOT IT UP PRETTY GOOD. ALSO REQUEST A STAND THAT IS ON THE CORNER OF THE PROPERTY, BECAUSE THE BUCKS MOVE IN FROM OTHER RANCHES. THEY ONLY TOOK 5 SHOOTERS ALL SEASON. MAKE SURE THE RANCHES NEAR HAVE NOT PUT UP GAME FENCES. GOOD LUCK, THE ODDS ARE VERY LOW.

Hunter: Bill MacFarland

Animals Hunted: Whitetail/Turkey

We were personally taken to our blinds (1 of 12) in 4x4's by the guides and hunted over corn feeders on a 2,500 acre ranch. Saw a big one on very 1st hunt out and decided to wait. Ended up with the biggest buck in camp of 4 with a 8 pt. 10" tines 15" spread. Saw a couple of other possible shooters. Went mid-Dec at tail end of rut. Guides and food were excellent. 2 of the 4 got nice turkeys as well. Also taken was a respect. 9 pt. and 8 pt. the 4th guy shot a small 8 on his last day. 2 of 4 also got does. Frank offers an awesome quarantee. I would definitely go back. It was my first trip to Texas and a very memorable one. The guides worked hard and we concerned about you getting your trophy. No hidden fees or charges either.

Outfitter / Owner: Charlie Harris

Hunter: Bryan Gordon

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

There was nothing about this hunt as represented. We were told there was 1800 acres on one ranch and 1083 acres on another(according to the website). We didn't see 1800 total on both ranches. We were also told there would only be 6 hunters in camp. There were 13 hunters at one ranch and 10 hunters on the other. I left with 2 hunts still to go out of frustration. As of my departure there hadn't been a shooter deer spotted. If either one of these ranches had trophy bucks on them they have been hunted out before we got there.

Outfitter / Owner: Jobe Tomer

Hunter: Johnny Cee

Animals Hunted: Deer/Hogs

Jobe is a really nice guy but poor deer guide. He had me hunting over scrapes from a tripod and a tree lounge climber so close that the deer would have to have the eyesight of Ray Charles not to see me if it appeared. He had no concept of deer trails, bottle necks, feeding or bedding areas. since this was a last minute deal I shouldn't had expected much but I did expect to see something.Lesson learned: anyone can call themselves a stinking guide.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

This was a Texas Whitetail hunt where I was supposed to shoot a minimal 130-140 class buck. I was also told I could shoot another Buck for an extra fee. There were 7 hunters in camp and no one saw a good buck in 5 days of hunting. The outfitter brags about 97-100% Success on 130-140 class Bucks, however in our group of experienced hunters only small basket racked bucks were sighted. All hunters felt seriously mislead. Food was great and accomodations were fine other than only ONE bathroom/toilet for 8 people. For $2,000.00 plus airfare there are much better places. I would use extreme caution with this outfitter.

My dad,12 year old brother and I came to NTO for our first guided hunt. I loved it! The only thing against it is it's too good. I didn't want to go home. I wanted to stay there. But, I shot a Fallow Deer, my brother shot a Wild Boar, and my dad shot a Fallow Deer. We got nothing the first day cause we looked in the wrong places. On the second day though we had the guide help and gamed out. We told all of our friends about it and they want to go. I can't wait to go next year! Oh, and ask Paul to tell you his Pumpkin joke!

Animals Hunted: whitetail,turkey,javelina

Fellow sportsman, Jim and Mel do a excellent job in all aspects. Jim runs a great hunt and has some great leases. The body size of the deer and antler size was a direct result of the high protien feed programs he has in place. Jim along with the ranchers work hard to manage the herd. This was the sixth hunt with what I consider my friends I made in Texas. I have hunted all over north america and all though this is not the most demanding hunt it is relaxing and you can take it to the bank, you will see quality and quantity.Good Luck and be safe.

I saw deer going to the stands, while in the stands and coming from the stands. this last trip was my first rattling session and man what a treat, big bucks came from every direction. Aside from having a successful hunt Allen also took the time and assisted me in getting a few good whitetail photos for my trip album. I am looking forward to my trip back next month.

Outfitter Review: El Indio Outfitters - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Dusty Davis

Hunter: Joe Hill

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer / Hog

This was my 2nd trip to El Indio Outfitters (Dusty Davis); I was there in the fall of 1998 after benchmarking (the process of finding BEST Practice) over 60 Outfitters and putting them in my database (currently 95 Outfitters). I got a 149 6/8 Whitetail had book to be there in 1999 but due to my mother passing away couldn’t make it. Dusty was very understanding and all he said was no problem just come in 2000. Not like some other outfitters who would have said you lost your deposit. On this hunt I hoped to break the 160 mark and this time I did just that. This was also a father and son hunt with my 89-year-old father. We have been hunting together for over 40 years and there have been some very memorable hunts. The hunt was for 4 days and my dad I got there on Friday, November 10 and sat in the blinds that afternoon. I did see a good deer that evening where he was on a road about 100 yards away from my blind, but season wasn’t open then. I went to bed that night and you can only imagine what I was dreaming about can’t you.Well opening morning came and there he was, but in a position that didn’t give me a clear shot and for some reason the deer got spooked when some coyote’s barked and all the deer left the area, which was very disappointing. Came back that evening with my guide Brandon Davis and yes you are right the buck didn’t show at all, but that is hunting but also frustrating. The 2nd day he showed up at 6:10 p.m. about 200 yards away in thick brush and the time he clear that brush I couldn’t find him in the scope. I was beginning to wonder if this deer had a charmed life. That evening back at the lodge we all talked about it (Dad, Dusty and Brandon) and came to the conclusion that I shouldn’t give up on that deer and try again tomorrow. May be the 3rd day would be the charm and he would show up. Dad did get 2-100 lb. hogs that day which made him extremely happy. The 3rd day was terrible he didn’t show up at all day. I can remember Brandon saying when we were driving back to the lodge that he had to go back to work tomorrow (he is a fireman in San Antonio), but his dad would be my guide. He also felt that since this deer hadn’t showed up today that it would show up early in the morning. He knew that his father have the opportunity to help me get the deer and boy would he rub it in. Dad did get a 200-lb. hog that morning he also got a nice buck that evening and well there was a little joking at the dinner table that I hadn’t even shot yet. The 4th and last morning was cold and luck was going to change. Brandon was right the deer showed up at about 6:30 a.m. still a little to dark to shoot, so we waited for better light, the deer was on the ground at 6:50 a.m. after making a 150 yard shot. We scored him above 160 B&C looks like I will get one of those coveted jackets at the Los Cazadores Deer contest.I finished the hunt that afternoon by getting a doe and a 150 Lb. Hog. Well I will be back next year and would like to say to all to those hunters who have hunted in other parts of Texas, that if you are ever get the chance to hunt South Texas, “TRY IT YOU WILL LIKE IT”, and want to go again. I do.

These are the people to hunt with if you want a good quality hunt and have it feel like a hunting experience and not just a shooting experience. Even though this is a cattle operation, they are definetly into game management. During my Hog Hunt, I saw plenty of other game with the possibility of a good trophy. Deer hunters let those smaller ones walk and there could more trophy deer coming from this place. They are the best operation I've hunted with in Texas and take care of you from start to finish. Animals Hunted: Feral Hog, Turkey, Javelina

I had a wonderful bow hunt at the ranch. Edmund and J. Pat Tom were both very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Game was plentiful, and J. Pat did an excellent job of putting me in the right areas. I ended up bagging two hogs, one at 17 yds and the other at 15 yds. I passed on 16 other hogs at 12 yds the last morning of the hunt while waiting for the tom turkeys spotted the previous morning to appear. I had a chance at the eight turkeys earlier, but couldn't get to full draw with 16 eyes on alert. I also had opportunities for javelina, but failed to connect. Saw numerous deer throughout the hunt, and even had an eight-point browsing at 12 yds on several occassions. I plan to return with my son during Thanksgiving for more hog hunting, as well as turkey and javelina hunting. And perhaps return for some excellent whitetail hunting next year. Make certain you find time to book a hunt at the ranch with Edmund or J. Pat.

the hunt with 4 arrows was not what i expected. for the money that you put down, to hunt in deep south texas, its just not worth it. some of the staff on site were very rude. i spent 3000.00 on my hunt only to find out that i could not even have a soda pop with with my stand type hunting package. they were more worried about getting the cash out of my pocket before i could even get my gear unloaded. and never had any concerns for me as a customer, or even as a fellow hunter. the only thing that i was impressed was with the 2 guides. i told them what i wanted, got a buck close to what i was looking for, and 2 hogs. would i recommend this place to anyone else.....no way....the only way you could get me back down there is, if it were put under new management. it's not worth the money..

We have hunted the last two years w/ Four Arrows, and Yes, I would go back time and time again. I agree that Wayne and his staff are not the friendliest bunch of people I have ever been around, and Yes there was a guy in the office w/ a ugly hat, but what did you go there for? The self-guided hunts are just that, self-guided. If your any kind of a hunter at all, quit crying and get out there and hunt!! I killed two hogs(both over 150) 2 tukeys (both over 20 lbs) and shot 2 nigli. I had the time of my life!! This is by no means a "canned" hunt. I have good reason to believe that the fellows that did'nt see or kill any thing, spent too much time in camp, and not enough time hunting!! I saw no less than 10 nagli a day and at least 20 turkeys a day. I saw only 7 hogs, which I shot 2 and my buddy shot 1, and I saw no javelina. My buddy saw loads of javelina. And the deer just ran over us, which we have pictures and videos of them. Many of them trophey class in anybodys book but I did'nt want to spend $7000.00 plus for target practice. To sum it all up, If a great hunting experience is what you after, and your not afraid to venture away from camp, than a self-guided hunt from Four Arrows is what you need. If your going to grip about the people, who on a self-guided hunt are supposed to do no more than check you in and show you the area, which is exactly what they did for us, stay home and go fishing. Feel free to contact me and I will send you are video and many, many pictures to back them up!!! In hunting, sometimes you win,(tag out), and sometimes you lose(go home empty handed). I personaly have lost more times that I have won, but thats why they call it hunting, not killing!!!

Excellent Opportunity for a trophy. Guides worked with you to try and meet your needs, both with the actual hunt and around the camp. Knowlege of the "how to" stalk muledeer was invaluable. Hunting with Steve and Gary offers a hunt of a lifetime with a bow, with great opportunity for success. The mid-day meals were either field lunches or camp meals, according to your wishes. The evening dinner was prepared and served as the hunters arrived from the hunt each day. Hunting with this group is like hunting with friends, not just another guide. Defintly the worst hunt I have ever been on. Wayne Peeples and his staff were very rude. The accomaditions were very poor. WE were told we would have 200 acres apiece to hunt on we were lucky to have 50 acres. We couldnt hunt the property we were supposed to hunt because the owners of the King Ranch were having bird dog trials. We had to hunt a piece of property they never hog and javelina hunt on. We did harvest 6 javelinas but seen no hogs in three days of hunting. We ended up leaving a day early we were tired of the run around. If you are thinking of booking a hunt with Four Arrows Outfitters I would think twice about it.I wouldnt recommend this hunt to anyone. This is just a small list of the many complaints we had about this hunt. If you have any questions you can contact me at the adress listed below. No hunter should have to put up with kind of treatment.

Outfitter / Owner: Craig Zorn

Hunter: Joshua Flournoy

Animals Hunted: Blackbuck Antelope

The hunt itself was fairly decent, although the outfitter had a serious disorganization problem in the way he ran his guide office/taxidermy shop. My complaint stems not so much from the hunt itself as it does from the ensuing taxidermy problems, which give a real good idea of the true character of the outfitter. He had some quality mounts in his shop, so I just had him mount the Blackbuck I killed. The hunt was in May. He said he could have the mount done by October of that year. Well, I didn't get my mount until December of the NEXT year, and that was only after calling and writing him 20 times. I finally threatened legal action if he didn't get my mount to me and he finally did then. The mount itself was pretty good, but the guy is a liar, very dishonest, has no sense of honor, and is possibly the most disorganized person I have ever known, on top of that. During the time that I was waiting for my mount I had some other business dealings with him (before I knew what he was really like), and he currently owes me almost $1000, which he has refused to pay for about 5 months now. Do not hunt with Craig Zorn of Trophy Quest Guide Service or use his taxidermy shop in Ingram, Texas.

They have a good quantity of white tail and hogs this was only there second year I thank in the short future they will have excellent trophy deer and hogs with there food plots and feeding program not to say they do not have some trophy deer and hogs now we were only there for five days and as any hunter knows you can not see every animal in that length of time. The accommodations are very good you stay in a mobile home that has three bedrooms two baths rooms. The food is excellent you have coffee and donuts first thing in the morning when after the morning hunt they have a cook that serves up eggs and bacon and for lunch you are on your own but not to worry as there is plenty to eat and for the evening meal Edmund generally does the cooking and it is excellent. I have been going to Texas since 1991 and have never returned to the same ranch twice but I am going back to ET Ranch this year if you go you will not be disappointed. Bill Alderman

Mr. Peeples needs to learn how to treat customers, even those not paying exorbitant amounts of money to hunt animals on the King Ranch. He and his employees were arrogant and rude. Our accomodations were poor. Some of our people had to sleep on couches and the floor even though we paid for a semi-private cabin. To top it all off some members of our party witnessed illegal game collection activities (illegal by TPWD laws not ranch rules) by a couple paying a large sum of money to hunt turkeys. The gentleman happened to also be a writer for several hunting magazines. Maybe this explains the attention they received. All they received was a slap on the wrist while a party of three other hunters were escorted to the gate for having accidentally left beer in their cooler while in the field. The preferential treatment was obvious and disgusting.

J.Pat was very accomodating in letting us hunt the way we needed to in order to shoot hogs. We ended up shooting after sunset and was unable to recover our game. With better lighting or a clearer sky it would have helped. But that's the way bowhunting is sometimes. Next time we'll be more prepared for night shooting. We all had a good time.

During the Christmas holidays, my son and I hunted at NTO twice. As usual we had a wonderful time, seeing many very nice animals. My son shot a monster hog (500+ pounds with 3+ inch tusks). NTO has a nice population of hogs. During the two days of hunting we must have seen 15-20 hogs, most 150-250 pounders. I was able to shoot an excellent four-horn. He will probably rank in the top 10. In terms of a Texas hunting ranch, NTO is somewhat small, but as the saying goes, size isn't everything. These guys are the best at getting you exactly what you want. They're a great bunch of guys and fun to be around. They give 110 percent on everything they do. They know the animals and the lay of the land and how to give you the shot to remember.

Outfitter Review: Don Lott Outfitter & Guide - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Don Lott

Hunter: Richard E.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

Mr. Lott led me to believe that I would have an opportunity to select which buck in the 120-140 B&C range I would like to take. Other hunters in camp were "promised" the same opportunity. Needless to say, this was not the case. Six hunters took a grand total of two bucks; neither of which was anywhere close to the 120-140 B&C class. But after four days of hunting and seeing 4,5,& 6 point bucks that were very small, when you see an average 8 pointer...you lower your standards some.Mr. Lott never showed his face in camp. He would call from time to time and say he would be there the next day. He always seemed to have an excuse. Finally, on the next to last day of the hunt, he talked with the oldest hunter in our group and asked him to "keep an eye on the boys." He was referring to our "guides" who were 22 & 23 years old. (One of the guides enjoyed shooting at rabbits on the ranch roads while picking up hunters each night.) That really boosted our confidence in Mr. Lott! I would certainly recommend Don Lott's operation to anyone that would gladly spend $2500 to go to Texas to eat and not care if they shoot a deer. But if you are after the 'hunt of a lifetime' and take your deer hunting seriously, this is not the hunt for you.

This is the third hunt this year at NTO. Everytime it seems to just get better. NTO has an area they call the Outback with box blinds overlooking feeders. For a very reasonable price, a hunter has an opportunity to shoot a really nice trophy. My 15 year old son took a gold medal Merino (his third gold medal animal in three hunts) and my 12 year old passed up a gold medal Texas Dall. The Outback has a huge number and variety of animals. It is not uncommon to see 20-30 animals in one morning hunt. Great for father and son (or daughter). Their main area of the ranch contains many, many record animals. These guys are great and will do anything and everything possible to get you a great trophy wallhanger. My sons and I really enjoy hunting with Paul, Craig and Don. Outfitter / Owner: Dusty Davis

Hunter: Joe Hill

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

Well, sitting around the dining room table in early November 1996 talking to my wife Connie about my most recent hunting trip to Texas. Connie could tell that even though I did get a 8 point buck (scoring about 120 B&C)and have done so for the last three yrs, that I was not really pleased in what I got. Connie asked the question isn’t there some place in Texas that you could get a large deer? Her next suggestion was since you do Benchmarking for your company (The process that enables you to find the Best Practice), why don’t you Benchmark where to get a bigger deer?Well, putting my Benchmarking skills to work I began the process of Benchmarking Whitetail Deer Outfitters. The criteria being an Outfitter that could get me a chance of getting a Whitetail Deer that would break the 150 B&C mark. That lead me to creating a data base that when completed for this hunt had 60 outfitters(currently has 95 Outfitters). Of the 60 Outfitters, 51 were in Texas, the balance being in Canada, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Not wanting to freeze on this hunt, Texas was chosen and the phone calls began. The Benchmarking process did not let me down. I found many Outfitters that fit that criteria, but when it was all over I picked El Indio Outfitters ran by Dusty Davis.I pick Dusty for some of the following reasons: He not only answers all my questions, but suggested other questions to ask, which I would have never though of.He returned All my phone calls, which I consider to be very important many outfitters never returned any of my 2nd calls. When it got down to the top six outfitters Not one had a bad word about Dusty. It turned out that 11 knew Dusty and again not one had a bad word about him.The process was complete and it was time to go hunting.Hunting in Texas, before I thought I knew what to expect, but was I mistaken. The hunt started December 26, 1997, which was over 13 months after my wife gave me the idea and all of my research was over. It took some time as you can see , but as you are also going to see it did pay off . The planning that goes into a trip like does make a difference. I was assigned a excellent guide by the name of Dennis BairdThat was something that never happens on other Texas hunts, and Dennis did indeed make a difference. Being a person who sits behind a desk most of the year and not having the years of knowledge that Dennis has, made a difference in that there were many times that I thought the deer in front of me was a shooter and would have shot it if by myself (since they where Much bigger that any deer I saw in other Texas Hunts) and Dennis would only shake his head or say no. I was able to learn more from Dennis, in those three days about judging deer that I did in all the reading I had done prior to making this hunt. Well, this went on for 2 days and believe me I saw more Big deer in these 1st two days than I saw in the past three years of hunting in other parts of Texas. I was seeing appx. 4-6 10 pointers a day, that were in the 130 B&C Category. I can remember seeing a beautiful 10 Pointer that, where I had been hunting would have been shot with no hesitation, but the words out of Denny mouth was it is to young, “Let it grow up”. I was also seeing some very nice 8 pointers that in a few years will be some excellent trophys also. I was seeing 1st hand why South Texas is known for it excellent Whitetail Deer Hunts. This was very hard for a person ,like myself , who when hunting in other parts of Texas , you shoot theses type of deer, because that is all you see. I was seeing first hand the concept of Deer Management. The afternoon of the 3 th day, my guide left me in the blind to get us some lunch and about 1 :00 p.m. I saw what I thought was a shooter it was Appx. 1,000 yards down a sandero, it was eating corn and coming my way all so slowly. I watch the deer till Denny came back and he put his spotting scope on the deer. I felt great when he turned to me and said it was a shooter. Had the pupil really learned from the teacher. We decided that if it came to certain point in the sandero , I would shoot. Well just before it got to that point it went into the brush. I was heart broken but after all this is hunting.Well about 6:00 p.m. Denny nudged me and said “Big Boy is Back”, look very slowly to your left. The “Big Boy” as we had named it had come back. This time it was Appx. 150 yards from our blind. Well with one shoot from my 30-06, my Ist South Texas Whitetail Deer hunt(the 1st of many) was over. It was extremely rewarding. A Beautiful 10 point that came in at 149 & 6/8 B&C points, weighting 177 Lbs. Well it didn’t break the 150 B&C mark( but I am not upset), I did get my largest deer to date. I have been hunting Whitetail deer for 10+ years and all it took was me coming to South Texas.I would like to thank all the staff at El Indio Outfitters. They were all excellent in everything they did, which that to remember can make or break a hunt. Their phone # is 210-260-5228. Tell Dusty, Joe said to call.I would also say to those hunters who have hunted in other parts of Texas, that if you are ever get the chance to hunt South Texas, “TRY IT YOU WILL LIKE IT”, and want to go again. I am.

Outfitter Review: West Kerr Ranch - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Barbara Kana

Hunter: Wade Derby

Animals Hunted: Axis Deer,Sika Deer

This is an 11,000 acre ranch which is extremely well managed. We harvested four Axis bucks with her in April 99 and four Sika bucks in November 98. Two of the bucks scored Gold in the Records of Exotics. The funny thing is, this is a Whitetail operation, Exotics are secondary. She has excellent quality bucks for the Hill Country. I'd recommend this hunt to anyone. Her prices are reasonable too.

Five of us went and we cam home with six animals. He has an abundance of rams as well as hogs, and most of the hunts are done with bow. The owner and guide is young, but he definitely knows his stuff. I strongly recommend this place to anyone that wants a quality hunt.

Outfitter Review: Fair Chase Hunting Service - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Ron Dunkin

Hunter: Lou Spaccio

Animals Hunted: Whitetail; Axis Deer; Aoudad Sheep

Myself & A friend hunted with Ron mid November of this year 1997, and we found Ron not only to be very professional and experienced, but honest in the recommending of waiting for the right animal, even though it meant more work for him. Having hunted all my life in some of the best whitetail deer country in the US, in the 3 day hunt with Ron I had seen more shootable bucks in that short time than I have seen collectively over the years. Our experience was a great one and I would highly recommend him to anyone. We will be hunting with him again. Our hunt was 100% success on all counts.

Outfitter Review: Diamondback Safaris - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Jeff Zion

Hunter: J. Sabo

Animals Hunted: Blackbuck Antelope, Scimitar Horned Oryx

I have hunted with Jeff on six different occasions and have taken friends to him on two other occasions. Our hunts have always been excellent and 100% productive. On most occasions we have taken game larger then anticipated but never smaller. In addition, Jeff provides superb taxidermy work on all animals taken. I highly recommend him for anyone interested in hunting exotics or just looking for a taxidermist.
