Outfitter Review: B & B Outfitters - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Bucky/Leesa Bonner

Hunter: Rodney Pritt

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

They have a great web site & promise you the moon. My first impression of the "lodge" was that I have been kicked-out of better places. The Ranch Foreman, Bill & the only guide, Matt were hillarious. The best cheap entertainment you could find, but the hunting sucked. We hunted box blinds that had been over-hunted, hell, I could smell the scent of humans all over them. Lots of deer to look at, but the quality was poor. Small bucks and lots of them. They tell you the average size buck harvested will be 140, no way will it happen. I shot a 130" 8-point and it was the biggest buck taken or seen the week I was in camp and from the group that was in camp a week prior to our hunt.I kind of felt like my group was a burden to them, the only thing Bucky wanted to do was relax and drink beer. If you want a place to go party, this is your outfitter, but if you're a serious hunter, pass them by.

Outfitter Review: West Kerr Ranch - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Barbara Kana

Hunter: John Pitts

Animals Hunted: Whitetail, Axis, Sika, Turkey

I have been to the West Kerr Ranch on three separate occasions, once for exotics, and the other two for whitetails. The Kana family has been very accommodating and hospitable to me every time I have been there. My hunts have all been extremely enjoyable and successful. The blinds are comfortable, perfectly positioned in regards to wind direction, and well maintained. I have hunted all over North America, and have yet to see a better operation than this. The people are first-rate, the accommodations are rustic, but very comfortable. The food is great, and the game is abundant, and of extremely good quality. This ranch is NOT overbooked, overcrowded, or overhunted. I can not wait to return!

Hunter: Chad Ford

Animals Hunted: Deer, Turkey, Hog, Exotics, Predators

We arrowed 4 nice hogs between 3 guys in 2 days. We had quite a few other shot opportunities but that's why it's called huntin. The ranch was set up well for bowhunting as well as rifle. We bowhunted. Allen, the ranch owner and guide treated us very well and was an excellent host. It was nice to have a quality hunt offered for a fair price. We would definitely go back. The ranch's owner is Allen William's 325-665-9450, dosplumasranch.com.

Outfitter Review: West Kerr Ranch - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Ashley Kana

Hunter: Martin Charlton

Animals Hunted: Aoudad, Sika Deer

We were on the Stalk hunt, and it was certainly a challenge. The ranch is over 11,000 acres, which is the biggest I have ever hunted on, and there were whitetail everywhere!! We had a group of 4 hunters, and 3 of us got exactly what we were looking for. I shot a 25" Aoudad and a 18" Sika Deer, my friend shot an Axis buck and a 19.5" Sika buck, another in our party shot a 200lbs. hog and an Axis doe, and our last hunter did not get a shot. This is a tough hunt with lots of walking, but very rewarding when you get what you came there for!! Ashley, Kelcie and Dean are great guides and treat you well. Outfitter Review: West Kerr Ranch - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Barbara Kana,

Hunter: Eddie Bueno

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

I have hunted twice for management whitetail bucks on the West Kerr Ranch, both times were as good as it could get. While hunting we were able to see multiple bucks before I chose the buck I wanted to take. The Sika hunting was just as good, I would recommend this hunt to hunters who appreciate true Hill Country hunting. This ranch is one of the finest examples of a well managed property as I have ever seen. The owners are also the most accommodating and knowledgeable hunters I have ever been around. From caring for the game after it has been taken, to the camp set up, I would not hesitate to return for my next hunt.

Outfitter Review: Comanche Spring Ranch - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Terry Caffey

Hunter: Curtis Schramm

Animals Hunted: Rio Grande Turkey

I took my wife here in November 2003 for her first hunt ever. We had talked with Terry for some time about a turkey hunt and scheduled this hunt for her first turkey hunt or rather her first hunt ever. Terry didn't let us down and put in a spot where we saw so many turkeys it was unbelievable! My wife had a blast and took a really nice tom with a 9 7/8" beard and a 1 1/2" spurs. There was a lot of big gobblers seen as well as whitetails, blackbucks, axis, fallow, scimitar oryx, and red deer. The accomodations were great and very comfortable. We only stayed for a 2 days and we can not wait to return again next year.

Outfitter Review: Bowhunters Paradise - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Jim Titchenell

Hunter: Cliff Van Hoese

Animals Hunted: Exotics and hogs

This was my second trip to Bowhunters Paradise and it just keeps getting better. Jim takes care of all aspects of the hunt from the beginning to the end. You never feel second best and always like his #1 client. When you arrive you get to see what a full service operation has to offer for a price that is more than reasonable. I have been to quiet a few ranches in Texas and have not seen one or hunted one that offered a better experience. A lot of ranches give you a dog and pony show to make it look like they want you to be successful but Jim truly does everything he can to include scent control and checking the wind before he recommends a stand. The terrain is perfect for the hunts and the tree stands he has set up are the way I would do it myself. Jim has put a lot of thought into everything he has done at the ranch not to mention a lot of hard work. On each trip I have seen good quality animals and good numbers of animals. The good thing is that the animals are wild and you have to hunt them. I would not have it any other way. I have not hesitated to recommend this ranch and outfitter to my closest friends and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone that wants a truly great hunting experience for a reasonable price. I will return and Bowhunters Paradise is truly a Paradise for a avid bowhunter like me.

Outfitter Review: Stanfield Outfitters - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Jeff/Tony Stanfield

Hunter: Luther Trower

Animals Hunted: Wild Hogs

Word to the wise, do not book a hog hunt with a waterfowl outfitter. Hog hunts are supose to be their second best hunt. Well, they did not do or have what they said they would. I planned this hunt for my two young boys and we never even saw a single hog, two days. We were out $750, no refund or appologies. The hogs there are totally nocturnal and way overhunted, day and night. Take your hard earned money somewhere else. This place can not last much longer. Maybe the goose hunts are better, but I would check out the references. I saw another posting saying they had a great hunt and everything was perfect. That was three years ago. I don't think they have done anything to keep the place up since then.

Outfitter Review: West Kerr Ranch - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Barbara Kanna/Ashley Kanna

Hunter: Mike

Animals Hunted: Axis/Sika does

It was a large group that took this axis/sika doe package with a few in the group that were wanting to take a trophy animal if they saw one they liked. A price was negotiated for one of the hunters to take an Aoudad.1st evening I saw tons of whitetail, but it was not whitetail season so all I could do was drool. Also 1st evening I saw a trophy aoudad but was not hunting aoudad. I ended up shooting a pig the 1st evening. I told the guide about the aoudad and also the guy in the group who wanted to take an aoudad, who told the guide he wanted to hunt the blind I was in for an opprtunity to take that animal. Insted they refused to put him in that stand and put another hunter from another group in that stand, who was paying full price for his trophy and he took that animal. In our group of 7 there were only 2 axis does seen, no sika does seen, although the guides managed to harvest 2 sika and 2 axis does themselves, and the group that was spending nearly 20 grand on their hunt managed to harvest sika and axis does. Out of the entire group of us we took 5 pigs. That was ok, but we were there for axis and sika does. Again none were seen to even shoot on my end. All of the blinds that I was placed in were about ready to fall apart, very uncomfotable. We were not offered lodging so we were forced to drive 35 miles one way to the nearest town to get a hotel room. The set up for cleaning animals were nice. No food was provided. Even after telling the guides that no animals were seen nothing was done to help. All that was said is "that moon may have something to do with it". Overall it was the 1st pay hunt I had ever been on, and definately the last with West Kerr. If you are spending $20,000 they will go out of their way to accomodate, but not at $19,999. If you are looking for a good whitetail operation this may be the place for you. Lots of good mature bucks seen every day. But you have to have trust in the owner/operator, and we did not have that. I almost forgot at the end of the hunt we were told that they had 2 sika and 2 axis does that the guides harvested that we could buy. If I wanted to just but meat I would have went to the market, I was buying the experience.

Rob and Jeff (guide) word hard to help me get the best deer. My mgt buck was a pretty 8pt with a 19 inch spread. My trophy was a main frame 11pt that scored 154. I also got a big hog and a coyote and saw javalina and a bobcat. Too many critters to get them all in 4 days... I plan on hunting with Rob again.

Outfitter Review: Magnum Guide Service - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Jim Roche

Hunter: Rucker Brown

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

I saw more deer and more rack bucks in 4 days than I have seen in 25 years of hunting. I could have harvested at least a trophy 4 1/2 year old 8pt on each hunt. Bring your video camera. The food, quarters, and staff were top notch. I did not meet Jim. He was guiding at another ranch. The only negative comments I have are; I paid the extra several hundred dollars for a 1/2 guide which means I have a guide with me every other hunt. I never had a guide. The guide would have been very beneficial in helping you size up and age deer early in the hunt. The package I purchased allows for a second or cull buck to be taken at no extra cost. The only catch is you have to have a guide with you to determine a cull. Otherwise I was more than pleased.

Outfitter Review: All American Outfitter - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Ken Mayer

Hunter: Angelo Baio

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

The owner is experienced and his wife and her helper "cookie" are wonderful people. Unfortunately the hunt didn't rate that well. The holdings / Land Leases can not support a resident deer herd and therefore the hunter is reliant on transient bucks. Our group seen about one or two does to each blind location but not consistently. In my opinion the outfitter can't handle more clients than the four he had and at that the stands won't produce well in this early phase of the season. The deer were hot on green fields and the outfitter only had about ten acres in the processes that had not been cleared and fully grown in before he started hunting it. One stand location had promise as who ever was lucky enough to hunt it seen and mule deer and whitetails but that land was off limits. The only single deer taken our week and the previous week were deer using the corridor to "that" green field. The outfitter claims the deer are hot for corn during the cold weather but our week seen temps in the 80's. Obviously he can't control the weather but even so it's still mostly transient bucks he's seeing not his resident core herd. If you know your land then you should make preparations for improvements if you are to be an outfitter, that's what someone pays you for. During the rut may be a better time to book but fat chance getting the slot. In in our camp four hunters on a four day hunt seen two "legal" bucks (western 4 count). One was harvested and the other is the "one that got away" story. It was great fun to hunt that single buck on that one day but when you pay good money and get one or two good mornings out of it, it is a great dissapointment. The sleeping quarters were infested with wasps and the smoke bomb smell choked you for four days. We dodged wasps while sitting in the living room each night. The guide/assistant is a great kid", 20 year old going to college, but never scouted the property except giving track counts while filling feeders. On his own account he never seen a buck at any of the the stand sites and claimed he only seen deer on ocassion at most sites. Looking back,,I requested as close to the rut as possible and booked in February the previous year but it couldn't be accomodated (I'm only one hunter). When I arrive I find that the following week would have been much more close to the rut and they only had a single client coming that week. I had requested a move on two previous occasions before the hunt to a different time slot but they never seemed to have the space.(not to mention for some reason I payed about $250 more than an another single hunter who booked after me) The web site is great but when doing your homework and calculating % of success (that's why you pay to go hunting instead of staying home) from previous years you find the web is showing last years kill but in fact is a highlight of good bucks from as far back as 1999. The lodge mounts weren't taken there so when you go in don't get so excited. The quail and turkey are outstanding there, try that instead. The math equals= out of rut hunt / poor chance at success. Hype to perspective clients instead of success focused effort gets reviews like this.

I booked a wild hog/ exotic hunt for Sept 05. The rooms and hospitality were great. Larry and Tina went above and beyond my expectations to make sure everyone in camp had a great time. Outfitter Review: Wildlife Systems - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Greg Simons

Hunter: Bob Fiss

Animals Hunted: Nilgai

I have been fortunate enough to hunt with Greg several times for many species and he always has come up on top. This hunt for free range Nilgai was way above my expectations. My personal guide was the head ranch guide who has been guiding over 25 years and knows nilgai like the back of his hand. He kept warning me of the importance of shot placement and use of large caliber rifle. He proved to be right when my 300 grain bullet through the front shoulders still left the nilgai to run 150 yards through brush. Several African safaris later and experience with big game animals I have never seen an animal take this type of abuse and still go. I plan to squeeze another nilgai hunt in for my son next winter.

They have a great web site on Realtree.com, but it is truly misleading. They stated average whitetail would be 120-140 B&C. I harvested a 126 B&C and it was the biggest buck anyone in camp had seen, including mulies. The accommodations were dismal. Thin mattresses on plywood beds, the house we stayed in was in shambles. I hate to be critical, but save your money.

Animals Hunted: Hogs

We spent 3 days looking for HOGS and NEVER saw one from our stands.. To say the least the hunt was a MESS... There was a group of hunters of MI hunting exotics and sheep and they were walking all around the hunting areas during the day taking running shots at animals and just getting all the animals stirred up.. the guide(Rusty V.) should have told them to stop pushing all the animals but he didn't... It was a messed..All of the animals were pushed really hard... I understand that hunting is hunting but the pressure did nothing to increase our chances...I have no problem with spot and stalk hunting but the ranch was just too small for this type of hunting.. There was also a bunch of ethical and legal issue that the guide did not care about.. The guys from MI had been to the ranch several times and they mentioned that the ranch had been going downhill.. This was my first and last time to this ranch..

I have been to several ranches in Texas, and none compare to NTO. This was my second trip, and they have the best quality of animals, the best guide, and by far the best food of any ranch I have ever been on. This time I shot a 23.5" Blackbuck, last time a 32 inch Axis deer. My two hunting buddies shot 8 animals out of the "Outback" including a couple of whopper hogs. Give this place a try, you won't be dissappointed.

The hogs are pretty well hunted so its tougher to get a 300lb hog but if you just want adventure and a great hunt this is the place. Our Guide (Chris) did a great job too!

Creed never showed up on time. He was at a minimal two hours late. He brought us to the area we where to hunt and then left. His night hunting equipment consisted of a cheap flashlight and duck tape. This made night hunting near impossible. We where served one meal a day at about 11:30 at night. While hunting we seen one hog. Unfortantly for us it did't stand in front of the light he had duck taped into a fixed positon.

There were four in our party, two with bows and two with riffles. In two days, every member of our party had an opportunity see and hunt the target game, pigs. In the process we had the added bonus of observing deer, turkey, and other wildlife during our stay. J-Pat and his staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and generous; thus, the experience is one of excitement during the hunt and relaxation during the off-time back on the Ranch. J-Pat ensures all of the large and small details are coved; from safety to comfort, so we were free to enjoy the ranch. We left the ranch with positive stories and fond memories from our time on the ETom Ranch. Moreover, I look forward to next year’s hunt on the ranch and I would recommend this hunting operation to any ethical bow or firearm hunters.

All members of our hunting party (5) had legitimate opportunities to harvest game, as well as watch the plentiful deer, turkey and other wildlife during the hunt. For a bunch of northern Michigan hunters, we couldn't have picked a better venue for a "between-season" hunt. I've hunted long enough to know that the taking of game is only a part of the experience. The Tom Ranch provided an exceptional hunting opportunity along with tremendous hospitality, meals and lodging. The campfire discussions and quality of the deer we saw will be long remembered and talked about around our own hunting camp. I highly recommend the Tom Ranch.

Six of us went on a 3.5 day semi-guided hog hunt with texas wild. We killed 9 hogs and 5 javelina( with many more near misses or close calls). 6 of the hogs went from 180lb-300+lb. David really went out of his way to make our hunt a success. We saw tons of game every day out. It was not uncommon to see 15 gobblers or 30 deer in a very short time on stand, let alone the 40 hogs that crossed a ranch road in front of David when he came to check on us one afternoon. All of us are planning on returning in the near future for hogs, or a hog/turkey hunt. This is a great outfitter that runs all types of quality hunts and charges about half of what you would expect. If I had not shot my blackbuck already I would have taken a really nice 140"+ whitetail. Terry is an exceptional guide and knows how to put you on the game. My father and I saw lots of game and the ranch is very large and has some beautiful scenery. My father took two meat axis yearling bucks on his hunt and we both left very pleased. Outfitter Review: Wild Hog Hunt - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Paul Candelaria

Hunter: Robert Bridges

Animals Hunted: Hogs / Exotics

Fairly long post, but wanted to give as much detail as possible in case you are considering this ranch. This is a small ranch located just East of San Antonio off I-10. We purchased a hunt (blackbuck, ram and hog) off Ebay and it was very explicit as to what was included. However, upon our arrival, we found that “ebay hunts” would be treated with much less respect. I use quotes because that is what we were called all weekend long. We were treated as more of a burden than guests, not to mention paying guests.I am including a list of highlights of the reasons I CANNOT recommend this ranch/operation: (Darin was my hunting partner, Dean was the hog hunter in camp)- Eat in cold, dark, aloneo Friday night the guide nor the owner sat down to eat with us and/or carry on a conversation as we sat on the porch, with no light in the coldo Saturday night we simply requested the meal be at our trailer so we wouldn’t have to sit outside again, and again we at alone- Darin wasn’t picked up Saturday morning until after 11:00 am for his hunt, then just dropped off by himself on place he’d never been for his “100% guided ram hunt”, then told if he shot one too large he’d have to pay another $700o On a paid hunt Darin sat in camp for half a day waiting to be taken to the other propertyo NEVER was there a mention of a limit on the size of ram that could be harvested, until Darin was being dropped off for his ram hunto On a 100% guided ram hunt, shouldn’t a guide be present?- asked to leave stando even though we had harvested our hogs, I didn’t think it appropriate to be asked to leave a stand in the area the black bucks had been seen - feeders not workingo None of the feeders Darin checked on the other ranch were operational- no rams seeno We would expect to at least see a ram, maybe not harvest, but see one- only 5 BB on place that we could tello only 5 blackbucks were ever confirmed seen by any of the hunters, including the “guide”- treated as an inconvenienceo The hospitality witnessed by us and the other hunter in camp was completely lacking. That’s why Dean (the hog hunter) left Saturday night before supper and not even go on his Sunday morning hunt?o Several comments and actions over the weekend gave the impression we were in the way, rather than paying guests.- “ebay hunt”o On several occasions the mention of “on our ebay hunts…”o NEVER in any correspondence, or advertisement in the ebay adds or on the web site was there a mention that a hunt purchased on ebay would be of less value than a normally purchased huntso We purchase items on ebay to get bargains, not to get less value. I’m sure this is the same reason anyone purchases items on ebay- Not guided as advertisedo While we were provided a guide, he was spread between 3 different hunting parties leaving him only a small amount of time to dedicate to eacho A guide was non-existent on the ram hunt, which was supposed to be 100% guided- No soft drinks as promisedo The only drink provided was water and orange juice until later Saturday afternoon and milk was deliveredo There weren’t any snacks as promised until Saturday afternoon as well- No access to 4 wheelers as advertisedo In the very last email correspondence the owner mentioned that 4 wheelers would not be provided, up to that point, for the previous 10 or so correspondences over 5 months it was advertised that they would be availableo This is a small issue, but just another misrepresentation - 4 wheelers from hog hunters had terrorized the placeo While walking/still hunting one couldn’t help but notice the atv tracks covering the entire ranch. These were very fresh from the previous hunting partyo That is the right as the land owner to allow this, but the rules state this is not to be allowed and we had expectations that the game would not be terrorized by atv’s.o It wasn’t until late Saturday that some of the animals started emerging from the thickets - No corno Again, only in the owner’s final correspondence did it mention we would have to provide our own corno Again, not a big issue, but in a previous conversation we were given the impression corn would be provided to bait the animals.- Friday noon to Sunday noon????o To me that mean hunt from Friday noon to Sunday noon, not Sunday 9:00am, and certainly not “you will have to be out of camp by 11:00am- Positive:o One nice axis seeno One nice sika seeno One nice fallow seeno One nice red stag seeno LOTS of buffalo (more like cattle though if someone likes that kind of “hunt”)o Could have killed more hogs, saw several (not what I’d call a lot though)o Accommodations were acceptable, but there was a nicer trailer available we weren’t allowed to stay in (not sure if that was for guests though)o They are finishing a new building that will be nice for dining, showers, a few sleeping areas, etc.o Two tower blinds on high fence pasture are very niceIf you like I can go into more detail on any point you wish.I sent this list to Paul Candelaria twice giving him the opportunity to respond, but to date have heard nothing from him. My assumption is that I’m old news now and wouldn’t be a source for future income for him.My hunting partner (Darin) had already purchased another hunt on ebay from wildhoghunt before our arrival. After our hunt, he has tried on several occasions to explain our disappointment and ask that corrections be made or refund for his future hunt. Darin was finally able to speak with Paul and he “guaranteed” his satisfaction on the next hunt. Darin followed up he conversation with and email to confirm as he wanted something in writing. Paul’s response was, “I checked with your guide from your last hunt, and he confirmed no guide fee and a poor tip. To guarantee your success on your next hunt, you will need to plan on a upfront guide fee of $75 upon arrival. The guides don't like working for free and not getting tipped, as you can imagine. You will also need to plan on $100 for meals and lodging, as per the terms of your auction.”So far this is the only explanation we have gotten from him as to our crappie service. Now let me address his response. 1st – guide fee was included in the auction price IN WRITING! 2nd – guide’s tip was to be based on service and success IN WRITING! - there was no guiding taking place- success was marginal- we tipped the “guide” $140 anyway because we found out Paul doesn’t pay him anything3rd – Meals and lodging were included in our package IN WRITING!In conclusion, I will stop short of calling this operation fraudulent, but suffice it to say don’t expect what you are promised, even if in writing. For example, some of his advertisements boast “expect to see as many as 100 hogs.” We saw maybe 20, tops. You will see the number of hogs Paul hauls in on a cattle trailer and releases the day of your hunt. They are interested in how many hunters they can herd through, take the money and get ready for the next herd.

Animals Hunted: boar

The owner promised us several accomodations on the trip that never came true. We booked the trip through him for a group to boar hunt and an Auodad hunt for two of us. He told us we would go to another ranch for the Auodad hunt and would be back in a half a day or one day max. We never made it to his ranch at all for the boar hunt. At his ranch was four other of our friends that were waiting for us, like we planned when we booked the trip. The owner charged a friend and I $750.00 apiece for the hunt at his land and $1750.00 apiece for the Auodad hunt on the other ranch. We never made to his ranch at all, and he refused to give a refund for the hunt on his land. I feel he cheated my friend and I out of $750.00 due to the fact we never stepped foot on his ranch to hunt boar like he promised. He is a terrible outfitter that makes all in the business look bad. On top of denying a refund, he refused to talk about the issue and hung up the phone. He will not call me back and sent e-mails that degraded us and called us names. He also made threats through these e-mails. A real man would have at least offered a free hunt on his ranch, but not him. He took our money and wanted nothing to do with us after we traveled about 1500 miles. It was a totally bad experience that cost a lot of money and made stress on what was suppose to be a vacation. If any one wishes to find out more about the incident please feel free to call.

We showed up the evening before our hunt started. L.B. told us by phone we could stay at the ranch if we wanted, but he wouldn't be there until the next day. We entered the bunkhouse to mouse crap from wall to wall, spider webs hung form the ceiling down to the top bunk beds. We soon found out that the AC did not work and there was no hot water. Between the eight of us we managed to get them both working. The next morning we discovered about half of the feeders were emty or not working. No one showed up until the next day. When I talked to him on phone about our experience he called me names. Over all we were lied to about everything and were very unhappy.

Hunter: Skip Kazmarek

Animals Hunted: Whiletail

With two sons in the military, one who just recently returned from Iraq and the other learning to fly helicopters, the odds of all three of us having an available week to go hunting together seemed too remote even to consider. So, when against all odds it happened, it was essential that we find a place where everything came together: great hunting, great lodging, and friendly people who went out of their way to make for an enjoyable hunt. After a thorough review of online ratings of lodges and guide services, we settled on Magnum Guide Service and did their 4-day hunt in Eldorado, Texas. All three of us agree that Magnum exceeded our expectations in every way. Jim and Melony Roche were the most gracious hosts I have ever encountered. The lodge at Eldorado was wonderful (as was Melony's cooking). The guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. But the best aspect was the hunting. We saw easily 20 to 30 deer per day, with many, many trophy-quality animals, along with countless turkey and even a few javelina. We come from an area of the country where just seeing a deer makes for a good day, seeing a buck makes for a terrific day, and seeing a quality trophy buck is a treat for an entire season. Imagine how to reacted to seeing dozens of trophy bucks over a 4-day hunt. This is the first unqualified endorsement I have ever made: you can book a Texas hunt with Magnum Guide Service and you will not be disappointed in any way!

Rafter W Ranches is the best guided hunt I have ever been on. When they say you are going to see 30 or more 8-point bucks during your four day hunt, they are not kidding. I saw more deer in two days then I saw in 10 years of hunting in Michigan. The accomodations are great, clean & private. The food is out of this world, don't think you are going to be feed hotdogs & beans, you will have some of the best cooked meals you have ever had in your life. It is if they have a four star chef on staff. Don't be mis-led, even with the great amenities you will still be guided by a very knowledgeable staff. They all harvested bucks inbetween 127 and 135 and they all saw bigger, but i dont think any over 150 but it is still a great hunt. they also got to pay for a management hunt i think ($300) and they killed one and hit another but didn't find it. the other i guess was content because he didn't even hunt one. The food is so good that im not even gonna describe it because it wouldn't even get close to doing it justice. If you ever book a hunt in texas and you wont it at an affordable price this is without a doubt the BEST PLACE YOU COULD POSSIBLE HUNT FOR YOU MONEY. i think the owner is jim and melodny. Check them out on www.magnum guide service.com Kevin Hinson from tennessee is one of the boys that went turkey and deer hunting he has a test. on there. thanks for your time

Outfitter Review: North Texas Outfitters - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Paul Cantrell

Hunter: Rodney Schultz

Animals Hunted: Buffalo

A great overall experance! Six of us went ranging in age from 5 to 63. We were all given special treatment and made to feel like one big family. The guides, Don Wade and Brian, were exceptional. The meals---3 a day with access to what ever we wanted---were great. NTO offers two types of hunts, an econy hunt and a hunt for truly trophy animals in two different areas of the ranch---we started on the econy hunt and at no time were we ever pressured or even felt pressured to upgrade our hunt (this ment a lot to me and my friends, NTO was there to help us have a good experance and they did). Two members of our party upgraded their hunts and we took a nice red stag with a rifle and a trophy buffalo(bision) with a crossbow.Guide Don Wade is a hunters hunter, a grand-paw(even though he doesn't look it) and a people person, between him, Brian and Paul we never wanted for anything. A truly enjoyable experance. Just let them know what you want and I belive they would do anything to try and make it happen, if you don't know just show up and they will help you figure it out.

Outfitter Review: Helm Ranch - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Ray Helm

Hunter: Ronda Jordan

Animals Hunted: Exotics, deer, hogs

We were in a large group that had originally booked with JJ Reynolds to go to the Helm in December. However, as JJ is ill, we were told that the landowner and a substitute were "taking care" of the hunting side. All year we have been leary of the arrangements and should have trusted our gut instinct. One of our hunters made other arrangements and went down early for extra hunting. When he arrived he found the truck tires flat, the truck out of gas, the feeders empty along with no work being done to maintain the deer travel. Working to remedy that, he finally was able to hunt one afternoon and spot a good deer only to have someone drive down the sendero and spook the deer off. Understandably upset, he went to the landowner's home to find him. I don't know what was said there, don't really care.. that was between him and the owner. In addition to those problems, we had been told the half the ranch was now "offlimits" because the owner's family was coming in to rifle hunt after we had already contracted to hunt on the ranch. When we arrived on the ranch (after leaving our children, jobs, and driving over 20 hours straight to get there), Mr. Helm told the substitute guide to "handle this for me" handing him checks for our deposits and hunts back and leaving us without a place to hunt due to his "conflict" with the other hunter. I honestly feel that had the original guide (JJ Reynolds) been around, this would have been a non-issue as things would have been as he had personally represented to us. Be very wary... if someone can not look you in the eye or speak to you, they are not someone you want to do business with! With that, the 'substitute' added he had been told to shut down the ranch's website and it would be closed to hunters.... If you had contracted already, don't fret, I don't think you missed anything!

Outfitter / Owner: Frank Fackovec

Hunter: Noah C. McKinnon III

Animals Hunted: White Tail Deer, Turkey

My brother and I saw more deer in four days of hunting with Texas Outfitters than we had seen in the previous thirty years of hard core bow hunting by ourselves. Ending the trip with a trophy eight and twelve point of our dreams seamed almost surreal. We are definitely going back for some spring turkey hunting.

Outfitter Review: Moore Ranch - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Colby Moore

Hunter: Karl Wallace

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

This is a very nice family owned ranch one hour west of Fort Worth. I booked the management hunt and was very pleased. A lot of deer were seen that met the management criteria.......not just one or two. I took both a nice buck and a doe. Colby Moore was hard working as my guide and enjoyed what he was doing. When you compare value, you will see that this a lot of hunt for the money. I highly recommend it.

Outfitter Review: M & M Hunts - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Randy Miers

Hunter: Karl Wallace

Animals Hunted: Whitetail / Axis

Randy is based out of Concan, Texas. He offers a good economy hunt for free ranging whitetails, axis, and other exotics. WHAT I LIKED: He allows you a very liberal limit of game in your package price. You are allowed to take what you want, as long as it's legal for that county. You're allowed to trophy hunt and/or meat hunt....you will see game. Both my friend and I took nice whitetail bucks. WHAT I DISLIKED: Some of his stand locations are very close to property lines, where wounded game could cross and make recovery a potential problem with the landowners. Randy likes to drink alot of beer , which restricts his travel. So, in the evening time he is dependent upon one of his staff to take care of his hunters transportation. We had different people each day, providing the transportation. If you can live with the beer drinking and some of the stand locations, this could be a good deal for you.

Outfitter Review: Boaz Ranch - TX

Outfitter / Owner: Ralph Boaz

Hunter: Phil Collins

Animals Hunted: Whitetail, black buck, axis, turkey

I have used Ralph Boaz for over 10 years for both family and business hunts. Ralph has his own ranch and access to others in the area. Everything is open range hunting and we have killed whitetail, axis, black buck antelope, turkey, and audad ( sp? ) sheep. We have always seen activity and have never been skunked. Ralph is an excellent host and goes out of his way to make sure that all of his guests have a great time. You cannot go wrong hunting with Ralph - Give him a call.

Outfitter Review: Stasneys Cook Ranch - Texas

Outfitter / Owner: Debbie/Johnnie Hudman

Hunter: David Kempinsky

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

Avoid this outfitter and ranch. In spite of all of the high reccomendations, largely from writers who likely get free hunts the ranch is poorly managed and falls well short of any reasonable expectations. Trophy bucks are promised and hunts are $4,000. If you don't mind spending that for a cull buck on a ranch where the staff will not return phone calls or barely even speak to you once they have your deposit then this may be the place for you ! After several years of hunting Texas this is the only ranch I have ever left feeling like I'd been taken by a first class scam.

The lodging and facilties are clean and modern. Everything appears well kept. The staff strives to make your hunt successful. This was my fifth trip to the Double C and I am planning another as soon as time allows. While I have not always harvested an animal, it has been my decision, the opportunity was there. I highly recommend Jeff Myers and his operation. My wife likes to come along just to relax at the Double C while I hunt.

Outfitter / Owner: Jeff Myers

Hunter: Francis

Animals Hunted: Axis, Elk, Fallow Deer and Black Buck

We (husband and wife) have hunted twice here. We have taken several species of game and always with wonderful results. The guides still get as excited as the hunter and are very interested in producing a good experience for the hunter. The accommodations include pool, open bar, hot tub, skeet and fishing, besides the hunt. To top it off, the owners and their family make you feel at home. We feel we have extended our friends to include them. We look forward to another trip and have already signed up our grandson for hunting camp as soon as he is old enough. Highly recommended to all!

Animals Hunted: Aoudad, Hogs, Texas Dall

Hunted with Jeff in January, 2004. There were 4 of us in the group. We took 7 hogs (and probably could have gotten more) and 3 Texas Dall Sheep. Didn't see any Aoudads in the field, but 1 was taken by another group. 2 of us were able to spot and stalk the Texas Dalls. The food and accomodations at the ranch are excellent. All of Jeff's guides and staff are great and made the hunt a lot of fun. We have already booked another hunt for January, 2005. Great job Jeff!
