Outfitter Review: Peters Hunting Service - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Harley Peters

Hunter: John Holbein

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

Three of us went on a black powder Mule Deer hunt in Sept 2004. We all 3 got our bucks by the 5th day of a 6 day hunt and had turned down several smaller and medium sized bucks. Outfitter and guides were knowledgable and helpful. There are some big bucks in his area. We saw some of them and my friend got a 29 1/2" buck. Accomodations were nice, clean and comfortable. Overall a good hunt !

Outfitter Review: Sammy Frazier - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Sammy Frazier

Hunter: Bruce Breitzman

Animals Hunted: Elk

This was the most physically demanding hunt I have ever been on. The camp was within shouting distance of four other camps. The guide I had was very hard headed and very opinionated. Several times I requested he slow down the hunt to my physical abilities, but he continually wanted to push to his abilities. I passed on a bull opening morning due to size and shot presentation. Things went down hill from there. I did not fill my tag. If Sammy choses to guide you, I think you will have an excellent opportunity to have a suceesful and enjoyable hunt. Best to get this agreed to before hunting. It is beautiful country.

tents had holes in roof, no drinking water in camp, very very few animals sighted, lead guide was very arrogant and had no p.r. skills what so ever. went on a fully guided hunt and on the third day never saw my guide for 10 hrs. this is a very lousey run outfit & should not even call himself an outfitter.Only one of the guides had any knowledge of the country, but they did no preseason scouting and had no clue asa to where the game was. Also the guides expect a 500 + yard shot to be "within resonable range". Don't waste your money on this ( outfit )

Outfitter / Owner: Larry Bishop

Hunter: Michael Cullen

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer/Elk

Second year with Larry and excited about 2006. This is a self guided(do-it-yourself).Private Land. They show you property boundaries day before hunt, suggest good areas on property to hunt. Larry provides all info necessary on land, licenses, rules, regulations, processors, taxidermist. Larry is a personable guy that is always a cell phone call away. You call him he answers or calls you right back. Good Man. He doesn't promise B&C Bucks or Bulls. I don't know anyone who can. What you will see are really nice above average quality game. Beautiful country, abundance of mule deer and antelope. We hunted 3rd combo season and relied on weather for elk to move out of mountains. Weather warm dry and windy so needless to say we saw elk but not in range. My dad killed nice 25 1/2" 4x4 and I killed nice 5x4 23". No elk but theirs always next year. You have to go find and get your own game. If you do not know how to hunt, clean, and pack game out this might not be the hunt for you. Their is no guide, babysitter, cook, field dresser on duty. It's the ultimate DIY hunt.

Doyle and his guides are friendly, know there areas and love to hunt. We stayed in nice cabins and had excellent food. We were on the front end of the rut and everyday got better. Glassed, hiked and called every day. Avg bull saw was 250 to 300 but there was a 320+ couldn't get on. Just a well run operation and I booked for 4 other friends in 2007-archery. Feel free to call with any questions.

Outfitter / Owner: Aaron Neilson

Hunter: Chris Green

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer/Whitetail Deer

I'm a hard core traveling bowhunter and have always wanted a chance at a trophy class, hard-horned Mule Deer. Despite finding mixed reviews in my research on this site and others, I booked this hunt on the strength of the archery references the outfitter supplied. I experienced a tremendous opportunity to bowhunt open country trophy mule deer, with a chance to hunt big whitetails in the same area (The tag is good for one deer of either species). I killed a mid 180's buck on the first morning and spent the next 5 days tagging along with other hunters in camp and video taping some huge bucks. We killed 4 big bucks (3 mule deer, 1 Whitetail) and only had 1 hunter go home empty, and he missed a 20 yard shot at a 180" mule deer. email me if you would like more details at sea.green@verizon.net.

Outfitter Review: Golden Eagle Outfitters - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Donny Carr

Hunter: Kyle

Animals Hunted: Elk, Mule Deer, Antelope

This is a great and honest outfitter. People that have had any issue with this outfitter don't understand hunting fair chase and ought to stick to high fence hunting -- there ain't no guarantee. What there is, is opportunity. It is your responsibility to know how to shoot. The ranches GEO hunts are excellent and the 185" mule deer is not rare nor is a 320+" bull elk. In one weekend we saw over 12 bull elk and easily over half of them were 300 or better. There are B&C antelope too! The food is tremendous. You will NOT lose weight no matter how much you walk! The key is be prepared -- know how to shoot, be able to walk and you will have the hunt of your life! The guides, the game and the food are excellent. You will be back!

Outfitter Review: Frazier Outfitting - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Sammy Frazier

Hunter: Jay B. Watkins

Animals Hunted: Elk

I hunted with Frazier Outfitting in 2004 (Landowner Voucher/Early Season) and 2005 (Draw/2nd Season) in Unit No. 76. Sammy and his guides are first rate. In 2004 there were elk everywhere. However in 2005 they were scarce as the weather was horrible (hot, dry and clear skies). I passed on a 5 x 5 on the first morning and several 4 x 4. We were in shooting range of elk every day but one. Sammy and his guides worked extremely hard to try and put us on to some big bulls, but they were just not moving. Most hunters in the Unit didn't even see an elk but Sammy knows the country well and always put us in a good position to see elk. If you are lucky enough to draw a tag in Unit No. 76 you can't go wrong with this Outfitter!

Outfitter / Owner: Doyle Worbington

Hunter: Wally Fayssoux

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer / Elk

Doyle has put together a fantastic hunting operation in some of the most gorgeous country I have ever seen. Our trip was a bowhunting combination for Mule Deer and Elk. We were into trophy Elk nearly ever day of the hunt. The Mule deer were huge and so plentiful I actually begin to expect to see them around every bend of the cabin road. We harvested a nice mule deer and had numerous opportunities at some unbelievable elk. I thoroughly enjoyed every member of the staff and would have had a great hunt even without the countless game encounters. Accommodations are perfect and the food is worth the trip. I will be returning to the Canyon Rim Ranch for many years to come and I would recommend to anyone that they book a hunt with Doyle. I would strongly suggest calling early as his camps are in high demand and for good reason.

Outfitter / Owner: Sammy Frazier

Hunter: Jeff Jones

Animals Hunted: elk

This was my second year to hunt with Sammy Frazier. The weather was very hot and the elk were deep in the timber. His guides work very hard to find you animals. Sammy found a isolated herd which had several 300 class bulls in it. We were on a rock hillside and the herd started coming down the mountain all around us. The wind was perfect and the some elk were within 10 yards. I killed a big 300 class bull! It was awesome. I owe it all to Sammy. It was one of my greatest hunting adventures and I will never forget it. Thanks Sammy!

Our group of six did a non-guided hunt on one of Rocky Mountain Ranches private properties. We got 4 bulls and 5 bucks. The weather was very warm and dry and we still got into game. Larry's attention to all details for planning our hunt from license applications to game processor was fantastic. The only thing that he could have done better would be to offer shooting lessons for a few of us.We will be going back.

Outfitter / Owner: Stan/Doylene Garvey

Hunter: Brian

Animals Hunted: Elk

My Dad finally got enough points to do a trophy elk hunt. He decided not to risk this 8 year investment and to hire a guide - a 1st for him. I came along to spot and film. Dad didn't research the Garveys much before choosing them, he just went off an acquaintances recommendation, I was skeptical. The Garveys proved better than my best hopes though - great guys, an extremely rich history of successful hunting and good camp accommodations in an area thick with trophy elk. Dad tagged a magnificent 6x6 opening morning thanks to some excellent spotting and guide work by Joe Garvey. It was awesome. I'd recommend the Garveys to anyone and am hoping to go back for my own elk, one of the huge muleys we saw, and a lion hunt. Stan's got a proven hound pack and guides many successful lion hunts.

Animals Hunted: Muzzleloader Elk

Hunted the 2005 Muzzleloader season with hunting buddy through Coffeepot Outfitters. Kelley and Monte Sandburg are very straight forward and honest about what to expect when booking through them. If you want a 400" bull, go with someone else. If you want a 300" bull and a great experience at a reasonable cost, book with them. We saw alot of animals and never saw another hunter. Shot my bull first morning of hunt and my buddy got his the next evening. Had opportunities at legal bulls each time we went out. High elevations can be expected. Our camp was at 11,450. You need to be in pretty good physical condition if you expect to get an animal. Both of our animals were harvested within a mile of our camp. Guide was exceptional. I learned more in a few days of hunting with him about calling and hunting elk than I have in 8 years of do-it-yourself hunts. Was worth the money just for the education!

THIS OUTFITTER APPREARS TO ONLY BE IN THE BUSINESS TO COLLECT YOUR MONEY. HE CERTAINLY DOESN'T HAVE ANY CUSTOMER FOCUS. HE OFFERS TWO PLANS, ONE WITH MEALS AT HIS LODGE AND THE OTHER NO MEALS AT A SEPRATE CAMP. WE WERE UNDER THE NO MEALS PLAN, OFFSITE. FROM THE TIME WE PULLED IN WE WERE TREATED LIKE "LEPERS". MAYBE BECAUSE WE OPTED FOR THE CHEAPER "OFFSITE/NO MEALS" PLAN. WE ONLY SAW HIM A FEW TIMES DURING THE ENTIRE WEEK AND ONE OF THOSE WAS WHEN WE WENT DIRECTLY TO HIM TO VOICE OUR CONCERN. THE HUNTING SITE WAS OVER AN HOUR DRIVE AWAY AND THE STANDS WERE OLD AND NOT VERY STURDY AND VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AT BEST. MOST OF OUR GROUP EITHER HAD TO FIX THE STAND OR HUNT FROM THEIR OWN PORTABLE STAND. ONE PERSON HAD REQUESTED TO BE SETUP FOR ARCHERY HUNTING BUT NEVER WAS ABLE TO DO SO. HE WAS TOLD TO JUST TAKE HIS PORTABLE STAND IN AND FIND A SPOT......NO ASSISTANCE OFFERED AT ALL!!!! ALSO DON'T BE MISLEAD BY THE WEBSITE, THEY SHOW "VERY NICE" LODGING, HOWEVER WE WERE IN VERY OLD RUSTIC CABINS WHICH APPEARED TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN THE 30's. THIS WASN'T TERRIBLE BUT WE WERE TOLD THAT OUR LODGING WOULD BE SIMILAR TO WHAT APPEARED ON THE WEBSITE. WHAT WE HAD AND WHAT WE WERE TOLD WE WOULD HAVE WERE TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TYPES OF CABIN. CLASSIC CASE OF "BAIT AND SWITCH". WE HAD 3 HUNTERS IN OUR GROUP WHO WERE ON BAITS THAT WERE NEVER TOUCHED THE ENTIRE WEEK. THEY ADVERTISE THAT THEY'LL SHOW YOU PICTURES OF BEAR VISTING YOUR BAIT SITE BEFORE YOU START YOUR HUNT.......THIS NEVER HAPPENED. WE HAD TO ASK FOR THE PICTURES AND WHEN THEY WERE PRESENTED ALL OF THEM WERE AT LEAST TWO YEARS OLD!!! THIS OUTFIT APPEARED TO CARE LESS ABOUT OUR CONCERNS AND WE WERE TOLD BY THEM "THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY" AND "THAT EVERYONE ELSE THERE HAD NO ISSUES". WE KNOW THIS WASN'T THE CASE! TWO OTHER GROUPS IN THE SAME CAMP EXPRESSED THE SAME LEVEL OF CONCERN WHEN WE TALKED WITH THEM AND THEY MENTIONED EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS THAT CONCERNED US!!!!

My son and I bowhunted elk in Colorado with a quide arranged by Matt Burrows of String and String Outfitters in 2003. I have bowhunted elk in Colorado more than a dozen times and this hunt was one of the very best --- good guide, no bad surprises, excellent elk numbers and quality. Matt checked out the quality of the hunt before recommending it, and it turned out great. Matt is true bowhunter and that is reflected in his hunts, i.e. he understands bowhunting and knows what to look for and what to recommend to his clients. I would recommend him to anyone interested in bowhunting elk.

If you are frustrated about killing a trophy elk, this is the place to go. IT IS 10,000 acres under high fence and while the hunting to kill a trophy bull is not as challenging as on public land, you earn your bull. For those of us who are not as young as we once were and are tired of hunting on overcrowded public land, this is the place to go.They will hunt as you wish and this is a boon for those of us who are not as fit as we once were. My wife won a management hunt at the Houston safari Club Convention and we were treated like royalty. The hunt was for a management bull(mature 5 pointer and a cow). The bull we shot was an old 5 pointer on his way down hill and then we shot a mature cow. The guides were top notch, polite, friendly and professional. I am used to doing all the grunt work myself and the guides would'nt let me lift a finger. All the services would what you would expect from a 5 star operation. If you are tired of hunting public land for years and getting nothing, call Cotton Mesa and you WILL get a good elk. If you have any questions please contact me.

This is a classic example of unsupervised guides ruining a fairly good outitters reputation. If you stay in camp with Dick and Cathy then you have a pretty good chance of getting your moneys worth. If you hunt out of the Lost Gulch camp with Brownie and Dennis your wasting your time. They are more interested in doing their hunting than they are helping you find elk and they have no ethics. Obbie & Gary came with good references, but before our bowhunt in Unit 76 after waiting 7 years to draw, they did not do their homework. We did a drop camp with them after being told they would be scouting the area weekly while checking cattle. When we arrived, they had been in the area once before season, to set up our camp. Saw lots of old sign and very few animals. They had never had a camp where they placed ours. Our tent was placed on a 45 degree slope which made getting comfortable rest impossible after a full days hunt. My parner & I have hunted elk for over a combined 40 years.

I have been on two hunts with this outfitter. Third trip is coming up. All the hunts have been unguided. Accomodations are great, the country is beautiful, and Al and his people are an honest hard working bunch. The chance of killing a P&Y bull isn't great, but the chance of getting a shot at a legal bull is (if you do your part, ie be in great shape, have some calling prowess, be willing to work). In short, Circle K ranch will hold up their end of the deal. If you hold up your end, you will have a great hunt.

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

Our guide drove a sloppy messy truck that smelled. Additionally, the guide didn't have information about meat processing or taxidermy. Fortunately, we found a rancher who provided important information. Additionally, the area we covered was like a race track. Guides driving the same territory on top of each other. We ran into other hunters frequently. Twice we drove upon other hunters in our group who were ready to shoot. The guides didn't seem to communicate about where the other was going. Lastly, don't go on this hunt if you really expect to even see 170 & 180 class Muley's. The web-site over-sold the opportunity. We shot the largest buck we saw in 5 days which scored 163. A fair expectation is that your guide has scouted the area before you get there. In our case, we sometimes drove land where they had acquired permission to hunt while we were there. The deer we shot was stuffed into the back of a Tahoe and left there overnight - then we hunted the next day with the deer in the truck. Unorganized, and unprofessional.

We saw a lot of 2x2 and 3x3 bucks, but the oldest deer we saw were about 2 1/2. Out of 12 hunters on the property, our small bucks were in the top 3 for size. I would recomend this hunt to anyone who just wants to see a lot of small deer.

There was plenty of good food/water and good sleeping quarters. It was a very relaxing and a good hunt for me.

White River Resort (Budge's) had rented horses. The owner did not know the quality of the horses (pack and/or riding). There were too few horses for the number of hunters in the main lodge and drop camps. We hunted the 2nd season and the horses were already worn out at the start of the season. Given the condition of the horses, we averaged only 1 hunt per day. One hunter got to hunt only 5 hours in 3 1/2 days. EXTREMELY poor outfitter. Out of 8 (paying) hunters, only 3 killed (cow elk, young bull and young mule deer buck). WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!

BEWARE, BEWARE. This has to be one of the worst run operations in the country. Misrpresentation after misprepesentation was made by Rick Sears, the "Booking Agent" who is the husband of Sunny Sears, who holds the license to operate. Rick Sears' license was revoked and he should not be allowed to act as an agent in any State in the country. On a five day Elk and Mule Deer hunt, the only game that I saw were some does. No Elk or Mule Deer Bucks. Don't believe Rick's pitch on this operation. STAY AWAY.

I will be honest, Mr. Bishop had more than ample ranches to hunt and a great relationship with the local Processor and taxidermist who took care of all of the post care once I delievred my animal from the field. Outfitter and his hunt manager gave me wrong directions to hunt point of contact. Contract listed different units to hunt than his company put me in for to hunt! Guide was nothing more than a local boy who works on a gas drilling rig and who hunts locally. He admitted he had not scouted area more than 2 days prior to our arrival. Was promised by Aaron Nielson that 400,000 acres were available to hunt on. Guide refused to take us to anything other than about 5,000 acres within 10 - 20 min of his house. Guide could not tell the difference between wild hog prints in the sand versus deer prints. Meals were supposed to be provided and some were not. Guide had no idea of effective range of a muzzleloader or if they woud shoot in rainy conditions. Stay far away from Aaron Nielson and Adventures Wild - they are liars and thieves!! The equipment was not in very good condition and we had a hard time communicating with Gary. His guides were not too swift as we did better than his guided customers! I will be very candid, and admit up front that I worked as both a guide and soil conservation advisor for Doyle during the intial three years of his operation. I have known Doyle for the past six years, and we have been planning a hunt for my son as soon as he became of legal age. My son finally drew Mule deer buck and Cow elk. I am a Active Duty First Sergeant in the United States Army and was deployed to Iraq in the Spring of 2003. Doyle went out of his way to ensure that my son Zachary was able to still go on his hunt. The year that I was gone was a very difficult time for Zach, and this hunt gave him some much needed peace of mind. Doyle went out of his way to photograph Zachs hunt and sent them to me in Iraq. This is not only a quality operation, it is ran by top notch, family oriented people. Zach was quickly made to feel like one of the guys as evidenced by the huge smile on his face with his buck Mule deer and Cow elk. I will forever be in Doyles debt for taking the time to make this hunt a lasting lifetime memory for my son. Thanks Doyle

Sammy runs a very excellent operation. I was impressed with his professionalism as well as his knowledge of the game in the area we hunted. Sammy manages to be entertaining while still being serious about the quality of YOUR hunt. My guide, Patrick, was outstanding as well. I was paired with another hunter who won the coin toss for first shot. He took a 5x5 at opening light on the first day. I got my 5x6 mid morning the 2nd day. We glassed the herd for approximately an hour and then had to reposition to get the shot. In both cases there was no pressure from our guide to take the shots we took. The hunt is at high altitude and is very physically demanding. I took my bull at 13,000+ elevation. The hunt was everything I had hoped for. Mountains are spectacular. I plan to return with my daughter to hunt with Sammy and Patrick again.

Animals Hunted: ELK

S and K outfitting is a first class outfitting business. There was six guys in camp, everyone shot and we killed 4 bulls and 1 cow. This hunt is not going to produce bulls much over 290 Boone and Crockett but it is a great hunt where you will see tons of animals! Kyle and Skeeter are great guys and Bill, Vic, Ron, and the greatest cook in the world only add to their great atmosphere. Hunt with these guys for five days and you will feel like you have known them forever. They are the most down to earth hard working guys you will find out west. If you dont kill a bull on this hunt you either missed or passed some up. I saw far less elk than anyone else in camp and Kyle actually saw a bull bed down so he drove him out to us and I killed him at about 100 yards. You have to put in the time to take a good bull onthis hunt but conditions elevation wise are as easy as it gets. If you don't want to walk you dont have to either. I will not be hunting with them next year but you can bet I will be back in 2005.

4 of us in same party took 2 nice elk and 4 mulies, 3 really good ones. Other 2 missed shots at good elk, a 5x5 and 6x6. In 5 days that's pretty amazing. The elk were still high on last hunt so it was harder to get to them, and we weren't in the best shape. The deer here are Outstanding! I got a deer we nicknamed "Penny Pond Buck" after seeing him 4 days. Great Experience. Guides Eric Pickering and Royce Wayne made it so.

Outfitter Review: Lobo Outfitters - Colorado

Outfitter / Owner: Dick/Mike Ray

Hunter: Jack Smith

Animals Hunted: Elk, Deer, Lion, Bear, Bighorn

I have hunted for several years with Mike and Dick Ray and I can honestly say that they run one of the best outfits that I have ever used. I have hunted Texas, California, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and Africa and they rank among the best I have experienced. I have been hunting for over 30 years and I have taken friends and family along on hunts with Mike and Dick and they have had similar experiences as I have. In fact, among myself and those whom I have taken to hunt with Lobo Outfitters, we are 7 for 7 on bull elk! This includes archery and rifle hunts in Colorado and New Mexico. If anyone would like to know more about their services, just give them a call and they will be happy to provide you with numerous references...it is the only way to objectively guage an outfit. I doubt seriously that you will be unhappy if you book with them.Jack Smith
