Outfitter Review: Wooden Rifle Outfitters - WY

Outfitter / Owner: Barry Strang

Hunter: Gerry McCoige

Animals Hunted: Antelope

I stayed in the tent camp. If your're looking for good accomodations book the town hunt or his upgraded accomodations hunt. The tent camp is remote however the food was great. I tagged out my first morning with a decent antelope & my guide was fresh out of guide school. He did a great job & i would hunt with him any where. I've been on several guided hunts & it was refreshing to see the excitement he brought to my hunt.

Outfitter Review: Antelope Outfitters - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Ward Anderson

Hunter: Terry Zimmerman

Animals Hunted: Antelope

Ward & Steve did an excellent job of guiding our group of four. As a matter of fact, all four of us filled our tags on the first day, and with all nice antelope!. My antelope was the biggest of the four and it scored (78. 0/8) B&C, that's a nice antelope for as dry as it's been the past 5 - 6 years out west. These guys do a good job of guiding and they are as down to earth, hard working type of guys you ever want to meet. I highly recommend Antelope Outfitters for great antelope hunting!

This was a backcountry hunt into the Thorofare area of Wyoming during the rut. Everything was perfect and Jesse was on top of every aspect of the hunt to ensure a great experience. The camp harvested 4 6x6 bulls before noon opening day including a 340" 7x8 and several 300" class bulls. Lots of horse riding involved.

Animals Hunted: Antelope

There were four of us on what we were told would be a trophy hunt. Our guide was a kid from Nebraska who drove us around in a junking old truck. We left the tent camp and drove for an hour and half to a small ranch to hunt. along with other hunters from other outfits. This was my second antelope hunt(not with this outfit)and I knew way more than my guide. We all killed antelopes, all under 14 inches.

Outfitter Review: Spearhead ranch - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Frank Moore

Hunter: Bill Kurtz

Animals Hunted: mulie-antelope

After playing cribbage at 4:30 am with Shirley the cook, you can expect to see lots of animals on this ranch. I was there with a gun and it was like everything I pictured it would be. Mulies in the morning, antelope in the afternoon then back to chasing mulies in the evening. Frank and Elaine run a first class operation. Me and two buddies filled 3 mule deer tags and 3 antelope tags in 1 1/2 days. We could have done it sooner but we wanted to stretch out the season! My antelope just missed being a booner because of a broken cutter. You'll scout most of the day with 4x4 trucks and might see half the ranch. Yeah, its that big! Once you see an animal, you try to put the sneak on it. Its harder than it sounds, but with guides who really know the country and the animals, the only reason you'll eat tag soup is if your gun jams all week. And for the management mulie/antelope combo hunt, you wont beat the price. I will be going back.

Outfitter / Owner: Doug Miller

Hunter: Alex Cameron

Animals Hunted: Antelope

I hunted with Doug in 2001 with my father and two other guys. All of us were done by 8:30am of the second day of a three day hunt! We had all killed great antelope bucks and all of us had a blast. Doug is a great guy and so are his guides. You can literally watch the antelope from the porch of the house. Wherever you look, they're there. Highly recommended if you want to kill a good pronghorn with your bow!

Hunter: Len Neeper

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer/Antelope

Ward and Steve are for real. They will work hard and do eveything they can to make your hunt a sucess. Steve put me on a nice 14" Antelope and Ward put me beautiful 5x4 Mule Deer. Harvested Both!! The Mule Deer hunt was great. Ward and I did a two hour stalk and got to within 90 yards of him. Great Stalk Ward!!Good Guys.Because we had hunted Mule Deer so hard, by the end of our hunt my hunting buddy had not shot an Antelope. So Ward took him out the next morning, not part of our allotted hunting time, and put my friend on a nice 12" Antelope. He also had taken a decent 4x4 the day before.I highly reccomend these guys. I know I will be returning.

Outfitter Review: Big Horn Mountain Outfitters - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Toby Johnson

Hunter: Peter Rickard

Animals Hunted: Elk Deer P/Horn B/Bear

We arrived from Australia on a 21 day hunt to find the Whitetail season didnt open until 3 days after we were due to fly out.I hunted with a mate, we both took Mule deer, & Pronghorn, I also took an Elk & Black bear. The outfitter had far too many hunters in camp all the time & not enough guides, he didnt have enough properties to hunt on.One of our guides "Stanley" just didnt have an idea about guiding at all, all he was interested in was drinking coffee.Stanley was our Elk guide, yet had never seen an Elk dressed, skinned & quartered, this guy was really an amatuer. The outfitter "Toby" was hands down one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, however, his organisation & attention to detail were non exisitant, sure he pushed himself & in his way tried hard, but he was never going to be able to make it happen properly, because he was way too far over booked. There's more to hunting than just pulling the trigger & taking an animal, its supposed to be about the thrill of the hunt & the experience, at least I think so.I was expecting more, sure I tagged out, but I wished I had of been able to hunt more, I sat around a fair bit waiting to go hunting, again too many hunters in camp, it was more of a ranch hunt than a hunting adventure.Toby's not one for detail or organisation, make sure you have a written agreement about the hunt inclusions & EXACTLY what its all going to cost.If you just want to kill critters & dont mind being dicked around, Toby just might be your man.

Animals Hunted: Deer, Antelope and Turkey

I have hunted with Thomas Ranch 3 times in the past several years. I have hunted turkey, deer and antelope. Each trip was a memorable experience and I tagged out on each trip. I hunted antelope and deer this fall. I shot an antelope just short of B&C in October and a beautiful 4X5 mule deer in November. Eric works hard to try to get his hunters a good animal and to make sure that they have a good time.

Outfitter Review: Seven J Outfitters - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Jeff/Deb Smith

Hunter: Jim Bernardin

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

Jeff and Deb Smith run a top notch operation. They have a beautiful new lodge that is set up with the hunter's comfort and convenience in mind. Details such as a rifle range with solid, covered bench, sand bags, targets (they even provide ear protectors) is something not found at many hunting operations.Jeff has excellent leases that are not over hunted and most of the guides have been with him for some time. My guide was a rancher who knew the property so well that he could practically tell you where and when a particular buck would show up! I took a beautiful 10 point and you do have a realistic chance for a 150 to 160 class buck, although they are not overly abundant. You absolutely will not go wrong with these folks.

I harvested an antelope a few tenths shy of P&Y and now have an excellent representation of the species. He was preparing for his elk hunts the same time we where in camp and I can say this would also be a great hunt based on the effort he was making to detail.

My father and I went on an Antelope / Mule Deer archery combo in 2004 with Bill. It was a great hunt. Bill is an outstanding guide who is not content until his hunter's get good quality animals. He does everything possible to accomplish this. He exclusively uses Double Bull blinds, which are probably one of the best out there. He is heavily involved with your hunt from getting you in the right location, tracking your animal and getting your taxidermy and meat processing taken care of. The quality and quantity of game is excellent. We saw many book antelope and many outstanding Mulies. I took a 79 1/2 antelope on the first day and on the 4th a non-typical 6X5 Mule deer through spot and stalk. It was a great hunt. My father also took a nice antelope and a nice 4X4 with the bow.Bill's family will make you feel right at home. Holly, Bill's wife, is an excellent cook and you will not leave hungary. George has a great western/horseback hunt, This was a bowhunt for elk and a rifle hunt for mule deer. The camp is a tent camp with all modern facilities/showers and electric/generator. Although I did not tag an animal on this trip I cannot blame anyone but myself. I had opportunities on elk with my bow and passed on mule deer with the rifle. This is a fantastic hunt for any hunter who wants to experience the Bridger Teton wilderness on horseback. I recommend this hunt highly.

Outfitter Review: Non-Typical Outfitters - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Robb Wiley

Hunter: Lance Bethke

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

I have hunted with Non-Typical Outfitters twice for Mule deer. I hunted in late Sept 2002 and early October 2003. Each time, I saw mature bucks every day. I was fortunate to harvest a buck each year. The first year, I harvested a 26" 3x3 and the second year a 27" 4x4 that scores in the mid-180's. The quality and quantity of mule deer is very good especially since this is 100% public land and general season. Their is very little pressure from other hunters as it is mid-season and you hunt very far from the roads. You stay in individual cabins in the valley and there is a husband and wife team that cooks. Private baths/showers. Cooked breakfast/dinner with sack lunch. Meals are in a large wall tent. Nothing fancy with the food but it is excellent and there is more than you can eat. You will leave the cabins very early (4 am) and trailer the horses to the trailhead you will hunt that day. You spend anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours on horse getting back into the country and away from other hunting pressure. You generally return to camp well after dark, eat and hit the rack at 10 or 10:30. Your pretty tired after a few days of this. This is a very physical hunt in rugged public land but if you are willing to do "your part", be in decent shape and shoot straight out to 350-400 yards you have a great chance at a high quality trophy. The hunt takes place at very high elevations (9000'+) so it is tough if your not used to the thinner air.Robb scouts extensively and usually posts pictures of individual bucks on his website prior to season. Robb is a hard core hunter who is in camp every day and is usually guiding someone himself. Not one of these outfitters who takes your money and you never see again. This is not a "canned" or "gimme" hunt but is a very satisfactory hunting experience.

I hunted here Oct 1 2003. That's all it took for me to take a 24 inch Mule deer and a 15 1/4 inch antelope. I could not believe how many animals there were. I filled out the first day, as did the other three hunters that were there when I was. I was Completely satisfied with everything they id. The country is beautiful and Ward honestly wants to provide you with a good hunt. He is not an absentee rich owner. He is a working class man, that cares about his clients, and loves to hunt. I am not connected with these folks, I just want people to know who is good and who is not. Call me if you consider booking. I will tell you the truth. I went on a disaster of a hunt. It sucked. Trophy hunts are conducted in excellent areas with lots of game. Put me on the biggest deer rack I've ever seen 150 yards away and I missed...my fault not theirs. Bagged two fine buck deer and two nice pronghorn bucks between the two of us two years in a row. We are increasing our group from two to six this year and going back for our third year of fun. Outfitter / Owner: Ray Dennis

Hunter: Rick LaVoie

Animals Hunted: Pronghorn / Mule Deer

Ray is a knowlegable guy but promised a lot of things that weren't true. I told him that I wanted a camp hunt which he said "not a problem." After I drew my tags, he informed me it would be a motel hunt. i was a little disappointed. He also claimed to do year round scouting for game. After hunting with him, I could tell that was not true. He claimed to have hunting leases but the mule deer portion of the hunt was on marginal public land. My guide Dan, did work very hard and I did take a muley and a pronghorn. My hunt took place in 1998 so it's possible things have improved, or not.

I'm from New Jersey and have been on many hunts away from home. This is by far the best I've been on. From the amount of game you will see to the dinners you will be served. I've been to triple three outfitters twice and with a little luck in 2004 I'll draw an elk tag and be back. This is a great place and these are great people. I would recommend triple three outfitters to anybody who wants to see plenty of game and then go back to a nice clean cabin and enjoy a good meal. If I could answer any questions or be of any help you can contact me. My e-mail pucc24@aol.com

Booked a 3 day hunt for 2003. Saw many, many antelope, bucks and does. We hunted private land. A very large ranch (of several 10,000 acres). Opening morning nine hunters went out and all tagged out by the late afternoon. Bucks taken ranged from 10"-15". Paitence is the key to getting the 15"+ buck. Maryilyn takes care of getting your licnese. After the hunt they arrange meat processing and taxidermy for an extra fee. This hunt is 50% 4x4 and 50% walking. Bring good binoculars.

Not as many big deer as we expected. (Hardly ever is.) But lots of animals. This was not a sit on the edge of the field and watch the parade type hunt. A spot and stalk hunt on smart deer would be a better description. Our hunt was unguided for 4 of 5 days. (6 hunters all tagged 4X4's or better) Property had many many deer, but few mule deer. (ok by us) Very nice racks on the elk by the way, but a tough draw for a license.Food was excellent. Accomodations were warm, clean, and bright. These people are very hospitable and accomodating. They are very interested in your satisfaction from a personal standpoint not just business or financial. The recommendation from the 6 of us? A-

Outfitter Review: Flying B Outfitters - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Bill Gauger

Hunter: Jason Wright

Animals Hunted: Antelope

Our group of archery hunters spent some time researching quality antelope guided hunts and Flying B Outfitters kept coming up in conversations. We contacted Bill Gauger, owner and operator of Flying B Outfitters and we knew after talking with him on the phone that he was the type of guide/outdoorsman that we wanted to guide our group of four experienced archery hunters on our first archery antelope hunt. Bill also stayed in contact with us from the time that we booked our hunt until we arrived in Casper, Wyoming, for what would end up to be a great adventure, not to mention that we were all able to fill our tags with respectable animals and had numerous opportunities that we chose to pass on just because we didn't want it to end. I personally had the opportunity to video lots of antelope that were easily in range but chose to pass because I was enjoying myself so much...All I can say is that I had an excellent time with Flying B Outfitters and that I cannot wait to travel west again. The staff at Flying B Outfitters is willing to work very hard to provide you with the best opportunity to harvest a trophy animal and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure that everyone has a great time whether you are a single hunter looking for a hunt of a lifetime or a large group traveling together; they will meet your every expectation.Bill and Holly have also kept in contact with my group since we have returned to North Dakota, which has meant a lot to us. If you want to book a great hunt and enjoy the company of a great group of people who will personalize your experience then I would highly recommend Flying B Outfitters.

Animals Hunted: Pronghorn antelope

This is a follow up to my review from about a month ago because the effort that Bill went to on my behalf is very noteworthy. The meat prosessor improperly cut my cape off at the chin and therefore I couldn't get the trophy with a shoulder mount. When I called Bill he got inmmediately involved and in a matter of a week or so 2 replacement capes showed up at my door. Unfortunately the processor had shipped them unfrozen, unsalted and without any ice so they were spoiled and unusable by my taxidermist. Another call to Bill. I don't know what he said to the processor, but within days 2 more perfect capes arrived by overnight air. I got to pick the better for my mount! Bill had volunteered to contact his local taxidermist to get me a cape if the processor didn't come through for me.Many outfitters would have left the hunter on his own to resolve the problem from 2000 miles away. The effort put forth by Bill gives a real indication of the integrity that he operates under. I'm sure that he would have continued the search if the processor didn't deliver. I believe it shows that Bill utilizes a reputable processor too because he stood behind his error and got the capes to me at no cost to me.A world class outfitter from start to finish!

Bill runs a first class outfit. He is not only the outfitter but also guides hunters as well and personally guided my hunt. This is not the place to go for a 30" Muley or to see 16" antelope everywhere and Bill will be the first to tell you that. He also does not have a fancy ranchhouse or anything like that but what he does have is a very sensible/comfortable setup that at the same time allows him to keep his hunts very affordable. His ranches do have very good animals especially considering the past several years of drought conditions. Bill also manages his ranches to insure that there is a good number of animals for the following year even if there is a hard winter. You can book with Flying B and not have to worry about the ranches getting shot out during the previous seasons. I would recommend Flying B to anyone looking to book a hunt in Wyoming. I will definately be going back to hunt with Bill.

Just returned from hunting with Flying B Outfitters and it was great. Saw lots of deer, most of them above average. I saw to many antelope to count but I did not have a tag. The Hunting staff worked harder to get me a deer then any place I have ever hunted. Accomidations were clean but not fancy and the food was the great.Bill runs a small outfitting business with little overhead so he can keep his hunts reasonable for guys like me who cannot afford a 5 star lodge and a waiter. This hunt was the best I had ever been on and the Family and Staff at Flying B go out of there way to help you with anything you need or want. Outfitter / Owner: Ron Lineberger

Animals Hunted: Elk / Mule deer

I researched elk outfitters for 5 months and checked into over 100 outfitters. Butte Creek came out on top. I certainly wasn't disapointed. The food was outstanding and there was 3rd and 4th helpings if you wanted to eat that much. The guides were all very experienced with most having several years of experience guiding in the area. The camp is very well run. All employees do their share of work and everyone was always happy and in a good mood. This made camp life enjoyable. I only saw one elk but it just happened to be a very nice 6x6 so I shot him on the 2nd morning. Didnt see any elk after that since I wasnt hunting. Out of 5 hunters three 6x6s and one very large 5x5 were killed. The 5th hunter turned down a 5x5 and missed another large 6x6. Several very large 6x6s were seen during my week but none were taken. Most everyday the hunters were either into elk or hearing bugles. My brother stopped counting how many elk he saw after the second day because it was becoming a pain to keep track of all of them. This was a wilderness pack in hunt so if you cant handle a 24 mile horse ride to get to camp, go some where else. If you think you can handle it, stop looking and call Butte Creek.

We went to Cody, WY in the Fall of 2001. The only negative was the weather. This is a horseback/pack trip back 40 miles from the nearest dead end road over the continental divide. The weather was extremely and unseasonably warm/hot for the elk to be moving through the area. The camp had a double occupancy because it was the week after 9/11 but the staff handily took care of all of the hunters. I was one of the 8 out of 10 hunters to get an elk (6 X 6). This was truly the hunt of my life. I wanted to shoot a trophy antelope and Craig and Phil found one for me. I didn't want a drive up and shoot trip, I wanted the stalk/crawl/hunt away from civilization and they came through. 260 yards near dark on the third day of the hunt I got my trophy. Earlier on the same day Phil spotted 3 deer crossing a ridge far away the morning silhouette was awesome. I asked Phil if he was a shooter and if he could get me in range. 2 hours later I shot the 5 x 4. This happened after passing a much larger 3 x 3 because it was within sight of a dirt road. We also saw several mule deer at Wheatland; unfortunately our tags were for Elk Mountain! There were also plenty of pronghorn to choose from. This, however, was a first for my two brother-in-laws and me. It was our first time to hunt Pronghorn and our first time on a guided hunt with firearms. I was the the "handicapped" one since I decided to hunt with a muzzleloader. Bill Gauger did exactly what he said he would work hard to to. We each took nice Pronghorn bucks with my shot coming at just over 87 yards. I'm still pulling the cactus out of my pants, but, believe me, it was well worth the effort. Outfitter Review: Antelope Outfitters - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Ward Anderson

Hunter: Robert Boles

Animals Hunted: Antelope

Ward and I spent a lot of time on the phone prior to this hunt working out details. It was to be a 3 day hunt with other hunting at extra charge. He was sure we would get our Antelope on the first day. Then we did not draw the tags for the area. So, he set us up on a second draw in a lesser area, as for horn size. He would not charge us for the prairie dog shooting since the area had changed, or we could cancel the hunt, and redraw next year. There were three in the group that went from Kansas. The other options were pheasant hunting and Mule deer hunting. All of these we could do in Kansas for large quality then the area in wyoming was posting and for much less. So, we banked on the dog shooting.Arrival in the hotel we meet Ward and one of the quides. Ward inquried about the caliber of our weapons, then appeared to place us in best areas but the size of gun we were going to carry. 7mm, 308, 270. We as a group found it funny that this was one of those magnum crazed freeks, and only long range kills come from magnums. We had a lot of jokes between us since we weren't carring MAGNUMS. He then told us that the state had posioned the dogs. There was an area about 45 minutes away on public land that there might be some dogs. We got up and went to beakfast and meet our 2nd quide, who told us he had not been out this property this year. So, much for the paying for scouting. Sure by lunch we all had our antelopes. By the way, the Magnum missed his 1st shot but killed it as dead as our non magnums on the second shoot. Back at the hotel, the guides did not know of a place to take dog shooting, so we went around town to guns stores. The weather was going to change to snow and with the guides not knowing a place to take us, we spoke with Steve, and reported our concerns that things were not developing as planned. And we wanted to speak with Ward. He went back talked amoungs ourselfs and decided to head back to Kansas and shoot dogs. We thought it reasonable to reburse 2 nights hotel and meals for two days. At 10pm not hearing from Ward, we called him and went to his room to talk with him. We did not hold Ward at fault for the weather or the posining of the dogs. From that point the experince went sore. He had no concern in regards to the mix up in hunting for dogs. And that he had a place but was not sure there was any dogs there. He at first wanted to charge us for shooting dogs then changed is stance and said that is something he might say. His response was he had given an excellent antelope hunt. Yes, but it was Antelope and parire dogs. He told us that he was going to talk with us regarding the concerns from our guide in the morining (0450). And that he was making plans that night to take us shooting. I thought it was rude not to talk to us that night or at least notify us we were to meet him in the am to talk about this concern. It was a 20-30 minute meeting and his general treatment of us, I thought was poor. He told us we make all the mistakes and there was noting that was his mistake or lead to our concerns. We left the next morning for Kansas and had two days of great dog hunting. Will not go back or recommend Ward or Antelope outfitters to others.

Outfitter Review: Hidden Creek Outfitters - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Bill Perry

Hunter: Mike Malone

Animals Hunted: Elk

I was very impressed with the way everything was handled when I arrived at Bill's office everything was planned out and we were told what to do with our gear to be packed in and when to arrive the next morning for the pack trip in. The ride in was breath taking the mountains animals we saw. When we arrived at camp Bill told us which tent we were staying in & took us around & shown us were the Cook & Dining tent was the Shower tent the Bathroom tent,it was an awsume setup and think to be back in the wilderness 30 miles and have these accomindations. The food was wonderful it was like eating in a high priced resturant. The areas we hunted were beautiful with lots of different game we saw elk-moose-Big horn sheep- mule deer & grizzly bear. The weather didn't coroperate it was hot for elk hunting, even with the weather hot we saw 30-40 head of elk everyday and the sign was everywhere.Bill said if it were 20 deg. cooler we would see 60- 100 elk a day,the sign was there, the elk sayed bedded up during the day. The guides were very experienced & new the lay of the areas. The personal in camp was the best I've ever seen, polite - considerate & very helpful in what ever your needs. Bill runs a 1st class operation , from the personel to the horses & mules to ride & pack were excellent. If you are truely looking for a top notch outfitter & person, and an area that holds trophy elk then give Bill Perry with Hidden Creek Outfitters a call. I'am going on a trophy Mule Deer hunt with Bill in October thats how impressed & confident I'am with Bill Perry & Hidden Creek Outfitters.

Outfitter Review: Flying B outfitters - WY

Outfitter / Owner: Bill Gauger

Hunter: Jack Zydonik

Animals Hunted: Antelope

Do not even attempt to book a hunt with this outfit. I booked a hunt with him in December 2001. Things were going well till March of 2002 and he quit responding to my emails, calls and letters. I called the WY Outfitters Board this morning (6/5/02) and was told he had lost his license to guide. They are sending me the forms to start the process of getting my monies back. But the most they can do is take away his license (which he has already lost). Therefore I have just kissed over a thousand dollars goodbye.

Outfitter Review: Heart Six Ranch - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Steve/Joyce Blinkenberg

Hunter: Guy Fitzgerald

Animals Hunted: Elk

I had a great hunt with the Heart Six Ranch last year. I was able to harvest a nice 6 by 6 bull elk that scored around 350. The shot was at about 20 feet, with my rifle. I have taken six or seven bull elk at a further range than 20 feet with my bow. I had a great time. The guides were all new to the Heart Six Ranch, however; they were not new to elk hunting. I had shots at bulls every day that we hunted. The guides made the hunt very enjoyable. My guide was able to call my elk to within the 20 feet of where I harvested him. We just watched the bull approach us for the last 300 feet. I was able to draw a tag again this year and plan on going back again. If I had to make a complaint it would be that on the last few days of the hunt we had to eat peanut butter and jam sandwiches. The reason for this that a bear was able to break into the food box and eat our meat. This was a first class hunt with first class service. Guy

Outfitter Review: Triple Creek Hunts - Wyoming

Outfitter / Owner: Jim Freeburn

Hunter: nick cates

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

Hunted in NW Nebraska on private ranch lands that had good numbers of deer, some of which were exceptional for a reasonable price. The guides were friendly and experienced, and didn't push to shoot and go home. Even when I shot and missed, more than once I'm ashamed to say, the guide was graceful about it. The owner, Jim Freeburn , is very accommodating and tries hard to satisfy your hunting preferences. He also has hunts for mulies, antelope and elk in Wyoming, but even there I believe his specialty is whitetail.
