“Who do you desire to be and what do you want to achieve out of your life?”
A job in the outfitting industry is one of the most exciting and self-satisfying careers today. Backcountry hunting and recreation is growing at an amazing rate, and so is the need for qualified guides. Our school offers only the best and most through training and job placement for big game guides and packers.
CONGRATULATIONS!. You have taken the first step into an exciting career in the outdoor world. Perhaps you have discovered within yourself a need for change; a need for something new, challenging and different.
If you have dreamed of waking up each day to follow your dream? It is through dreams that actions are born, leading to a new level of living. You can make it happen (you can “live big”) as a professional hunting or wilderness guide.
Professional guides share a special love for the outdoors and enjoy a career packed with unique rewards and challenges. They also share a common interest in helping clients achieve their dream, whether it is a horseback pack trip to a remote mountain stream for fly fishing or bow hunting expedition deep in the wilderness.
Perhaps this sounds good, but you are wondering if you have what it takes. Being a successful guide requires hard work; dedication; strong personal ethics; solid skills; common sense; physical stamina, motivation and pride. It’s not an easy life, and it is not for everyone. You’ll be working hard, often exposed to the elements, and you won’t become wealthy overnight. If you’re looking for a comfy 9-5 job, you’re barking up the wrong tree.
The Western Montana School for Guides provides in-depth, hands-on training in dozens of essential topics you need to know to start your career as a professional guide, or simply to be a better outdoorsman. For example, you’ll learn about horsemanship and trail riding; horseback pack trips; big game hunting; wilderness survival; use of maps and compasses; camp cooking techniques; outdoor photography, emergency first aid and much more. You also will learn first hand about the business of being a professional guide or outfitter.
The outdoor guide business in the United States is booming, especially in the Norwest, but so is the competition. There is always room at the top in this exciting and unique business, but you will need the best, most useful training you can get. That describes the strategic vision of WMSG – “providing students with the finest quality instruction and direction for becoming a successful part of the outdoor recreation industry.”
All classes take place in the backcountry. At the end of each day you will be able to practice what you have been learning. You are also free to go fishing in the famous Bitterroot River. Sundays are a day off to relax fish, call home, go to church, do laundry etc.
All of your home study materials are included in the cost of tuition and will be sent to you after we receive your reservation application and deposit. We do everything we can to place qualified graduates with good quality outfitters. I recommend reading the book called “So You Really Want to be a Guide” by Dan Cherry. It is very informative and realistic. It is available at Stoneydale Press at 406-777-2729.
Classes are small and fill up quickly. Please call us anytime to find out available dates. After reviewing this information, let us know if you have any questions. We will help you in any way we can.
