Outfitter Review: High North Outfitting - Quebec

Outfitter / Owner: Kevin Mattice

Hunter: Harold Lee

Animals Hunted: Caribou

My partner and I were 4 days late getting into camp due to World Trade Center Terrorist Attack. However Kevin kept the camp staff there waiting for us even though we were the last two hunters of the season and it was touch and go for us to even get a flight out of Denver into Canada. I highly recommend this outfitter. He is very honest and accomodating as anybody can be. I have another friend who hunted with him a couple years ago and says the same thing. I too was very fortunate to have taken the largest bull of the past 2 years(56 inch inside spread). No outfitter will work harder for you than this crew !!

We went to a new camp just off of the Hudson Bay - Camp Makis. This is an Inuit lands owned camp - Peter Palmer is overall owner - but this camp is lower priced at $2595 7 day hunt than Palmers deluxe camps. However, we had wood cabin, hot/cold water with shower. stove/refrigerator. I can't say enough good things about this camp9 hunters all killed pope and young caribou and two went boone and crockett. I would be glad to answer any questions. The folks in camp the week before us all killed two bulls - two went boone and crockett also.

The hunt was excellent for our older hunters, considering there were not alot of animals. Hunting consisted of sitting on shore and waiting for the caribou to cross the lake. You then moved up or down the shoreline and shot them when they came out of the water. They took some fairly nice bulls, but the style of hunt wasn't to my liking. I was envisioning glassing and stalking in the higher elevations (which I did) or sitting on funnel areas, but not enough bou to make it worthwile.

This was my 5th hunt at this camp and it just does not get any better than this. The year i saw the migration was not as good as this. All the bulls were large and nice racks. Most were the Leaf River bulls which are bigger and have large white manes. All you have to do is pay attention to your guide and take that dream bull. The camp now has all cabins and have an oil stove. FOOD when you put on five pounds on a hunt you know the food is excellent. My wife and i very highly recomend hunting with High North Outfitting. For contactWayne & Dotty HibbardR.D. # 4 Box 106Montrose Pa. 18801Phone 570-934-2332

Three of us went up from 9/10 to 9/17. All three of us harvested Very good to Excellent bulls (2 each). We went to camp 26 where Sonny and Henry were the two most experienced guides (approx 15-20 years each). Sonny was also the camp manager. There was not a big migration through there at the time but the guides knew the area and the crossings very well and were able to put us on or near enough to game about every day. We were fortunate that we didn't have to move to another camp, but talked to others that were moved and they were very happy with their hunt also.We saw a lot more white manes than we thought that we would. Every one in our camp got 2 bulls each, and there were approx. 25% of those that had double shovels, double bez, double back points, and good tops. The guides were very realistic and helpful in preparing you for what to expect in regards to the number of animals moving through the area, how to dress for the day, and how other camps were doing. The meat, antlers, and capes were all very well attended to, and the camp was clean and well run. This is a class outfit, in my opinion and I would quickly recommend them to anyone who has realistic expectations out of a hunt. Make sure that you have spent plenty of range time with your rifle or bow, as the shots can be from 10 feet to 400 yds at standing, walking, or running caribou.

Anyone who is willing to put in the effort will find High North Outfitting more than willing to give that person a good quality hunt. The camp personnel and quides are very friendly and will do their best to see that "the hunter and guests" get an experience that will be remembered for many years to come.. the equipment and camp accomodations are top-rate without the "frills".

Our group of 8 had a very successful hunt. Everthing we were told about our hunt was very satisfactory. The booking agent Ken Gingrich from Pa. was really knowledgeable and helpful in setting up the hunt. I have also hunted the Scheffersville area seven times. The lst time there we had not seen any caribou. The other yearswe were delayed on our hunts because of bad weather. I would recommend the Kuujjuaq area highly over the Scheffersville region.

This camp is in virgin country and when someone talks about Gods country I can't help but to think of this camp and the wildness of it.We had wolves howling in the evenings near camp, caribou around most of the time, along with other wildlife being sighted nearby. This is a very new camp and Peter and his staff are making improvments as they go along, but considering the remotness of this camp it is fantastic.Game was north of camp when we arrived and we were flown to it on the 1st day everyone took at least one bull and some took two bulls.I took my 1st ever on day one,it was a very good bull,I had numerous opportunities to shoot a 2nd bull on day one but decided to wait and maybe score on a better bull on day 2.I got my other bull on day 2 but it was not as big as the 1st,I misjudged it's size.Overall this camp is AWESOME.

My 1999 experience was very similar to Carey Brickell's. I was in a group of five that was rushed to camp so we could hunt the first afternoon, as we were supposed to. When we got to camp, all of the guides were guiding other hunters who were allowed to stay an extra day (which I didn't mind) or hunting for themselves (which I did mind). Our group got two caribou the next day and several more opportunities for the bowhunters. Then the caribou were gone. We hunted two more days with no opportunities. I feel we were lucky to be in a group, because we were able to pressure them to move us to a hot camp. Four of our group plus nine other hunters moved into the camp with 1.5 days left to hunt. All 13 tagged two good bulls each in less than 24 hours. The guides were very busy packing, which meant we were self-guided after the first couple of caribou. At no time did we have less than 5 hunters per guide, although we paid for 3 to 1. I didn't mind helping the guides pack and load the meat and horns. I DID mind when my horns and half of my meat did not get to the motel in Montreal. After much talk and letters, Safari Nordik sent me meat to replace what they lost. I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN MY HORNS, ONE OF WHICH WAS VERY GOOD, NOR ANY COMPENSATION FROM THEM FOR LOSING THEM!!! I BOOKED THE HUNT THROUGH BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING IN FLAGSTAFF, AZ, AND HAVE GOTTEN VERY LITTLE HELP FROM THEM RECOVERING MY ANTLERS! LET THE BUYER BEWARE! If anyone is considering legal action against these guys, I would like to hear from you.

I have read some derogatory articles on Safari Nordik in the past few years and I can understand that some years are not quite as good as other years but as a whole this is considered hunting not killing. I personally have hunted with Safari Nordik five times. And yes, there have been some lean years, where moving you to another camp was not an option because there were NO animals anywhere! Not even at the other camps. These outfitters do their best to accomodate everyone. As for the guides, Fabian, was our personal guide and he was as knowledgable as they come. His personality as well as the other guides that work for Safari Nordik was super. Our Chef, Jaques Sevigny made superb Meals. His job was to make sure we went home weighing more than we when we came to camp. Overall, our hunt was fantastic, taking a few large bulls, some small bulls and yes a couple of cows. As a bonus the fishing was fantastic, Lake Trout, Speckled Trout and a few Char. If you have any questions on this hunt or Safari Nordik you may contact me at 215-538-2816.

We were put into a camp different than the one we were saposto go to because there were no annimals in our camp. We were told that we would be there for a couple days and then moved back to our camp. The rest of the group 9 in a tent made for 6 filled their tages in the 2 1/2 days but the weather changed and we were not moved since we didn't have any caribou either. Our Camp Mgr was run ragged just keeping up with our 9 plus the 4 in the other group. I had the only tag left after three days. none of the bulls taken were very big. Staff/guides in first camp were very accomodating. Unfortunately, there were no 'bou within 70 miles of camp. We were moved to another camp on the afternoon of the 4th day of a five day hunt. Information on the actual timing of the move was very slow in coming - we actually wasted most of day 4 waiting for the plane to arrive. This was very frustrating. No animals were seen until the final day. My brother and I shot nice bulls with a rifle (we shared a single rifle) since our original intent was to bowhunt. I think our expectations of having our choice of bulls were met with the reality of having to take any bull on the last day was a disappointment. All staff and accomodations were solid. I've heard many worse horror stories on a "dream hunt" that took many years to save for....

This hunt took place in Sept of 99. They did exactly what they promised. There was no game near the camp, so they flew us to another camp for 3 days and we all took nice bulls. Any one who thinks that it was not a fair hunt given the fluctuation of the migration from year to year should have gone with the outfitters that leave you to see nothing for the duration. All the boats were new and the guides knew their jobs and did them well. I am going back this year with my son and I expect the same fine quality hunt.

We saw no caribou, even after a phone call a week before our hunt the outfitter said they were taking lots of animals. When we arrived at our camp ,our guide told us there were no caribou in that area for at least 2 weeks. We requested to be moved, but were told there were no caribou anywhere. After the hunt we asked for a half/priced hunt for the next year,we were flat refused, the owner said well thats hunting.Since we have heard of other outfitters that gave there hunters half/price or even free hunts to hunters that saw no game. I sure don,t reccomend this hunt!

NUNAMI HAS A UNIQUE OPERATION THAT LETS YOU FLY OUT TO THE CARIBOU. YOU PAY A BASE PRICE FOR THE HUNT AND YOU PAY A FLY OUT FEE BASED ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON THE FLIGHT TO THE MIGRATION. I WENT OUT FOUR DAYS FOR A COST OF 575.00 US. MOST OF OUR GROUP WHERE BOW HUNTERS THE GUIDES DID TRY TO GANG US UP TOGETHER AND HAD NO CONSIDERATION IN REGUARDS TO WIND DIRECTION. IT WAS A PROBLEM WE WORKED OUT WITH THEM AND ALL WAS FINE. YOU WILL PAY A LITTLE MORE FOR THIS HUNT BUT YOU WILL SEE THE ANIMALS.

Our group of thirteen took 26 nice bulls, but there were some serious problems with the management of this operation. This is difinitely a hurry up and shoot operation. We were told to shoot the first bulls we encountered and given a timeline of two days to do it and were threatened to be moved if we didn't shoot. The outfitter lost three hunters bags going into the camp and couldn't find them for three days. He had only two camps that were active with caribou and was pushing people through at a cyclic rate. At one time there were 24 hunters in a camp set up for 12. There was no increase in guides or staff to accomodate the extra hunters. This turned into a pretty much self-guided situation once all those hunters started getting caribou. The guides were very unhappy and vocal on their displeasure with the management. We were charged $130 for processing two caribou and upon arrival in Montreal the meat and antlers were not there. The majority of our group is at this time trying to get the outfitter to ship our meat and horns to us. All this being said, we lucked out and got into an active camp and saw and took some really nice animals but it was a fight the entire trip. If your just a shooter and not a hunter then you probably could weather this outfitter, hunters you'll be really disappointed.

I had hunted with Club Chambeux the year before and after getting screwed royally by them I vowed never to go to Quebec again. But after talking to a fellow on the internet I gave Nunami Outfitters a call. The thing that got me to book with them is that if there are no caribou in the camp they will fly you to the migration and that is exactly what they did. I had my 16 year old daughter along and needed her to see some game, so when we flew out they put us in the middle of the migration. We saw thousands of caribou and we the 3 of us shot 6 bulls in 4hrs. Three Pope and Young Bulls and my daughter (who hunted with a rifle) shot a royal bull!!! The one thing to remember with this hunt is it does cost extra (about $300.00 per person) to fly out to the caribou. So it ends up being a one day hunt if the caribou are not around camp. But it was still cheaper than club chambeaux. They had a french chef that cooked the meals that were truly incredible and they even have a pool table at the main camp along with sattelite tv. I would highly reccomend this outfitter to anyone and please feel free to contact me.

I have hunted extensively but this is my favoritebecause it is a lot of fun! There are those who are disappointed by Anticosti Island but I think it is because they expect B&C class bucks. This is not the place for huge bucks. But if a guy wants to have a great north woods hunting experience, with excellent, experienced guides, this is the place. You'll have a good chance of watching bucks make scrapes and rubs, respond to rattling and calling. The average good buck will be an 8 pointer, often with nice heavy beams, and will dress an honest 140-160lbs.The only downside is that there is a waiting list for the best hunts (Nov 12-26)at the Bell River Lodge.

The hunt with High North and Kevin Mattice was a great experience. The guides worked hard and were quite knowledgable. The camp was very clean, well organized and stocked with all the supplies/equipment required for a successful hunt.High North a smaller operation than others with which I am familiar in Northern Quebec thus enabling them to treat hunters as people and not numbers. Eight hunters in a camp set up to accommodate eight hunters. No false promises of "relocating" in the event of no game. It's logistically impossible to make this promise in the Nunavik. There simply are not enough licensed bush pilots/planse to potentially move several hundred hunters a week. Remember, you're hunting migrating animals that may be 3 or 300 miles away! Although advertised success rates may run high, it's still caribou hunting, not caribou shooting! All eight hunters "tagged out" with one exception. He chose not to take a second bull. Two Safari Club records book animals taken in our camp! Saw lots of other game as well, shot Willow Ptarmigan, caught Lake Trout, Brook Trout and Char. I've also been there and seen nothing in a weeks time. That's hunting! If you want a quality experience and as good a chance to see/take a nice caribou as anyone else can offer, call High North. Most importantly, everything was 100% AS ADVERTISED!!!

3 of us went on a guided hunt to the Ballantyne Lake area where the caribou were supposedly there year round due to the forage - not! We saw 6 caribou in 6 days, with only one mediocre bull. The food was horrible with hard boiled eggs and spiced meat every day for breakfast. Lunch was a sandwich made out of the same spiced meat. Supper consisted of char on 4 of 6 nights and stew the other 2 nights - ridiculous! We never left camp prior to 9 AM and were back each day by 5:30 - even though it was light from 4 AM till 10PM! Some of us were disgusted and tried on our own before the guides woke or after dinner. My guide "broke his glasses" prior to the hunt and therefore didn't have any. He also "forgot" his binoculars - a difficult situation when you are supposedly glassing 5 miles for animals. We were never moved to another camp even though it was promised before the hunt. In a camp of 10 hunters with 20 caribou tags, 11 animals were taken with most of them cows -(just to take some meat home). As for meat care, the guide hacked the 2 hind quarters off of the animal and took the backstrap, leaving the rest of the meat. The guide's back was hurting, so I ended up packing out my animal! After the complaining from everyone, we were offered a return hunt next year for 1/2 price - no way would I go through that again! I would positively not recommend this outfitter to anyone.

Outfitter / Owner: Henri Poupart

Outfitter offered a written guarantee to relocate us to another camp, if there were no caribou at our camp. Despite multiple requests to the camp manager, this guarantee was not honored. I sought out Henri Poupart at the Montreal airport, and advised that the guarantee was not respected. Henri said that he "would take care of us". My subsequent pleading via mail resulted in an offer, two months later, of 1/3 discount from regular price of next hunt. However, the "regular price" was raised by $400.00.I feel that I was "warehoused", along with 22 other hunters, for 6 fruitless, gameless days. Of 46 licenses in camp, only 2 were filled, on runts (the only 2 caribou sighted in 138 man days of hunting).I understand that we "missed" the migration, but the relocation guarantee was intended to negate this possibility. Lack of effort was not an issue: we hunted 10 hours per day, every day, for 5 days, ranging as far as 20 miles from camp.I saw 1 arctic fox and 1 flock of ptarmigan. Tried fishing once - more fun and productive than trudging the tundra. With 23 hunters in a camp intended for 12, camp facilities were grossly over-capacity. In sympathy for the over-worked camp cook, I washed dishes two nights, and swept the floor twice. Mood of the camp was dark and brooding. Five hunters from PA were on their 2nd gameless hunt with Safari Nordik, and their extreme dissatisfaction was apparent. We were never greeted, let alone welcomed, to Montreal, Kuujjuaq, or Camp. At camp, it was a big effort to find a bunk, then to try to find a place to stow your gear. I finally used the (empty) butcher shed for my rifle and spares. At least I was in the plywood cabin - 11 other hunters were in a plastic tent. I needed to wear my boots in camp - there was more dirt inside than outside. Imagine the line-up for the only shower and toilet in camp.
