With the ridiculous prices for steel shot, we need a break, and the Kent shells pattern the same in my Rem. 870 as the topline shells from Federal and Winchester, but at a saving of a couple bucks per box.On ducks they perform as well as the other more expensive shells. As with any steel shot loads, make sure you do some pattern testing or you could be in for some surprises. For example my original Mod. barrel did not pattern steel shot well, throwing a pattern at 30 yards that had a blank the size of a basketball hoop in the middle containing no shot! When I switched to a 26 in. LC barrel with remchokes, the steelshot loads patterned tight full in the I.C. tube and the best so far is a skeet tube in the LC barrel that actually patterns modified with steel shot.My son's Rem 870 express does not pattern the same as my 870 with the LC barrel, so it shows that you need to spend time with a pattern board to get decent results with steel shot. Also, don't consider any steelshot load containing less than 1 1/4 oz.of #2 shot- this only equates to 1 1/8 oz. of #4 lead shot, and obviously the 3 1/2 inch magnums are better. See Remington's website for pellet counts and retained energy values.
