Outfitter Review: Little General Hunting Lodge - Clearfield County PA

Outfitter / Owner:

Hunter: Sal Farrauto

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

We’ve traveled to many Outfitters across the country; Little General is definitely on top of the list. The hospitality that Rich and Janice give is spectacular. The whole time we were there it felt like we were hunting with family. The atmosphere was very friendly and they really wanted you to enjoy your hunt. Jan cooked delicious breakfast, lunch and dinners. The baking was fabulous. The experience was great. We hunted over food plots, hardwoods, fields and pipelines. A lot of action. After dinner we relaxed talking about hunting either inside or outside by the fire pit. I got a magnificent 8 pointer with the cross bow, that I could not be happier with! During our stay, we booked a trip for the following year. Truly a great time with great people.

Animals Hunted: Wild Boar

I booked a trophy hog hunt for $750. My only gripe was they didn't tell me that a trophy boar would be $1,500.. trophy sow is $750. I was under the impression I was coming in and shooting either. That being said, we arrived at the ranch and their VERY nice lodge.. no power. However, I must say, it was not their fault.. there was a major storm the night before and it apparently knocked out power for many folks in the area. The outfitter and his guides/help all apologized over and over and they brought in generators to give us some lights to work with. The next day we set out for my trophy and the guide (can't remember his name.. younger guy w/ blonde hair) was very knowledgable, friendly and personable. We glassed about 50 hogs before I finally picked out 2-3 that were what I was looking for. The guide did everything he could to help me get set up for a clean shot, but the hogs kept staying bunched together and wouldn't split up for me to get a clean shot. After "shadowing" the pack of hogs for 2-3 hours the boss boar had enough and bluff charged us and grinded his teeth at us. Our guy was calm and in control and did what he could to keep the hog from charging us. After that fun and exciting incident I got a clean shot on my hog at about 75 yards. The guided estimated the hog at about 400 pounds and she now looks amazing on the wall.. everything you would expect a wild boar to look like. Being the teeth in mounts are fake, I put in large "cutters" and no one would know it was a sow and not a boar I shot. All in all, this lodge was great and I had a blast.

Outfitter Review: Double Boar Ranch - Pennsylvania

Outfitter / Owner: Andy Krantz

Hunter: Kenn Don

Animals Hunted: Wild Boar

The hunt was great. The number of animals made for an exciting yet challenging hunt. 4 of us all took animals. 2 with a bow, 1 muzzleloader, and 1 rifle. The accomodations were superior with each bedroom having their own bathroom. Andy and Linda make the stay extra enjoyable with their great hospitality and cooking. I would definetely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great hunt for boar.

Hunter: mike K

Animals Hunted: Fallow

Very impressed with The Wilderness PA. Really allowed you to spot and decide on game you were after. Very challenging for several of the species as the hunting area is huge. The fallow were nice looking and pretty decent size...although certainly there are bigger to be had. Elk on property quite nice. Various rams and goats and plenty of gnarly looking European boars.

Outfitter Review: Tioga Hunting Preserve - PA

Outfitter / Owner: Gee Brothers

Hunter: Chuck and Patti Coolidge

Animals Hunted: Boar/Pigs

My wife and I took our two sons on a hunt they had saved for all summer. We wanted to video tape the hunt and spend the time in the field, however, we were instructed to go to lodge. The reason they stated, "too many people in the woods" We have always taught our kids it was about the experience not the end result. That doesn't seem to apply at the Tioga Ranch. The guides with the exception of two were put out that we decided to hunt on Sunday and it cut into the Sunday NFL game time. No help with pictures of our memories (bad). Skinning was done, thrown into the back of the truck, hair left on the pigs. No hosing them off. Also charged for 6 bags of ice but didn't get one. Real professional. The next time I read an article about the problems of teens/kids not getting into hunting or the anti-hunters, picking up steam in their fight to ban hunting, I won't question Why? I'll just thank the GEE brothers. DO NOT BOOK A HUNT WITH THIS GROUP.

Animals Hunted: waterfowl

This was my first ever canada goose hunt on 11/15/08. My guide was Phil and 2 of his friends for a total of 4 hunters. Day started out foggy and light rain so the geese where late coming to the fields. Around 8am a single goose came in and Dennis said let Chris shoot it. Wow. They all knew it was my first hunt but Phil friends didn't have to let me do that. I didn't shot it because I knew more geese would be came in. Not 10 mins. after the single came in about 10 geese came in and we got 5 of them. My first goose. WOW, Then at 8:45 the sky opened up and we had geese coming from every direction, it looked like 150-200 of them coming in. After we let 5 or so land, the rest came in and took 7 more. The limit for geese is 3 per person. I guess that was the only bad thing about the hunt, it was over by 9am. So after alot of pictures, Phil and his friends asked if i would like to go to lunch with them. I'm telling you James Creek Outfitters is the only waterfowl outfitter I'll ever use in Pa. Please contact me with any questions.

My uncles and I took an man who was partially blind due to diabetes on a hunt. It was his last hurrah so to speak so we contacted Andy Foor and he said he could accomodate. They set everything up from rigging a lazor sight on the rifle to the hunting day and made the hunt enjoyable. It took a long time, but he was able to bag a nice buck in the afternoon after the guide drove some to him and the owner was able to get his lazor on a vital and told him to pull the trigger. The guy can't stop talking about it and wants to go back! The food was good and the room was clean. Nice lodge with all of the taxadermy. Thanks for the memory, the old fellow thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hunter: Chris Weakland

Animals Hunted: Deer

Booked a 3 day non-guide bow hunt with Perry. Perry web site says 80 tree stands but only seen 5 and all treestands 50 yards from road. Also the treestands are metal ladder 10-12 ft or wooded ladder 8-10 ft, treestands not made for the bow hunter in mind. Web site said 1000 acres of private land but Perry lease it out so no hunting on that land. Every location hunted had other hunters, land owners on atv driving the feilds or gas line workers. I belive Perry scouts by driving his truck around looking for deer trails acrossing the road and he sets up treestands near by. I have to give him credit on one thing. Turkeys, turkeys turkeys are every where,If your looking for a turkey hunt got to Smethport, Pa in McKean county and find some land onwers or book with Perry. www.padeerhunting.net

Outfitter Review: Mohr's Island Hunts - PA

Outfitter / Owner: Steven Mohr

Hunter: JOE D.

Animals Hunted: hog ram and goat

the rams were very nice size ecspeciaslly for 350 and the couple 450 rams were just plain dam huge. They were pretty skittish and a bow hunt for them would be a great hunt The pigs were feral hogs ang he only puts as many on the island as is going to be hunted that day because they will swim off. They were hard to find but once you found them it was an easy kill, but fun with the bow I shot one that was 310 pounds and the meat was amazing tasting definitly worth every penny just for the great taste and the really cool experience of going across the river in the boat and having a great time with a bunch of your buddies. We are going again on good friday of 2008 there is 11 of us and most are shooting rams but a couple tasty pigs it will be a great day. PRICE IS GREAT AT 350

Outfitter / Owner: Mr. Mohr

Hunter: Andy Sweger

Animals Hunted: Hog

The island was a mess, but this is expected for an island sitting in the middle of the Susquehanna river. The island itself was a little dense in areas. If we would have found the hogs on that part of the island, I would never have been able to get a shot off. Other then that, the hogs were really large (300+ lbs). The owner advised me ahead of time that they were farm raises ferel hogs... NOT RAZORBACKS or anything like that. I knew what to expect. I also got to watch and help push a VERY, VERY large Rocky Mt. ram to another hunter. There were several other rams running around the island that were a nice size.

Outfitter Review: Wilderness Exotic Hunting Lodge - PA

Outfitter / Owner: Andy Foore

Hunter: JOE D.

Animals Hunted: ram and boar

I booked the hunt for a black hawiann ram for my girlfriend and a merino for me. My buddy went for a pig. We booked the hunt in December for april and when we did I told the guy my girl had wanted to shoot a normal sized black hawiann which costed $450. He said no problem and that they would have lots to choose from. The week before the hunt I called and the guy said he had a couple to choose from and there was no problem. Then the night before the hunt I called to ask what time they would like us to arrive and he said the only two black hawianns they had were going to cost $750 and 900 dollers. So I lied to my girlfriend and said that they were going to give us a deal on a bigger ram so she would go on the hunt because if she knew the hunt was going to cost me 400 more dollers then she would have hunted something different and I knew she had really wanted to harvest this particular species with her bow. The boars were dumber then farm pigs. These were supposed to be razorbacks and the cost of the hunt was 500 dollers. The boars were about 150 pounds soak and wet and had maybe half inch tusks. The stood near a feeder for about 3 hours until one got shot then they ran about 50 yards and ran back to the feeder. Then the guy tried charging my buddy 600 dollers for this "razorback". The elk were the worst part, they had 3 guys coming to shoot 3 cows during the week and 1 guy coming the day we were there they had sperated the cows from there young and the hunting area was right next to the holding area were the calfs were located. All the cows did was stand next to the fence and the young ones were standing on the otherside. A guy showed up around 12:30 to hunt one of the cows and walked up to the hunting area and shot it in 5 minutes AND WHEN I SAY 5 MINUTES I AM NOT KIDDING. A ram hunt here would be great due to they did have alot to choose from just not the one species we were after. but every thing else was horrible.

The lodge was a little rustic and there prices were a little high but it is definitly worth it. The quality of game is great with nice sized boar and by boar I mean RAZORBACKS the did have a few feral pigs but the majority was razorbacks and they were all the same price. The rams and goats were huge. The hunt was the best hunt you could have on a preserve. YOU ACTUALLY HAD TO HUNT FOR A TROPHY. We saw plenty of trophysand it was way better then other exotic hunts I have been on. The guides were great and every one was really friendly. And the best part is the boar can get very mean. What agreat place defintly recomended.

I was very please with the guide, but not so happy with communication. I would like to hunt there again and have called and e-mailed several time.. no answer. I am now looking to hunt else where. The hogs avalible were few, but I was told this before I booked. They did knock off $150 from my hunt because of the lack of choice. Overall, they are a good outfitter, just have very poor communication.

Outfitter Review: Hill's Twin Spruce Lodge - PA

Outfitter / Owner: Adam Hill

Hunter: Anthony Ruchak

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

I placed a deposit down for this hunt in February 05 the hunt was to take place in November 05. I booked at this time due to the fact that Mr. Hill advised me that he(hill) was only taking 11 hunters and the spots were filling up fast. The low number of hunters appealed to me, so I put down a deposit. I was not hunting, I wanted to take two guys who took me hunting when I was a teenager. I figured a nice guided hunt on private property would be welcome considering these guys have hunted mainly on public land in PA during gun season. I then scheduled a meeting with Mr. Hill in Sept. to show my buddies the lodge and property. Mr. Hill was very hospitable during this meeting. Mr. Hill also stated that only 11 hunters would be in camp. I also told Mr. Hill that I was on a previous guided hunt where the guide killed the biggest deer by far. Mr. Hill reassured me that the guides do not hunt. The time to hunt came. It was the day before the opening day of rifle season in Pa. My friends were very excited about the hunt.(The hunt is all they spoke about since Feb) I was not hunting since I hunt in Maryland and I felt I was making this hunt all about my friends, it was their hunt and they deserved it. Upon our arrival at the lodge the day before the hunt Mr. Hill was nowhere to be found. We were greeted by other paying hunters. Also, I asked where was the tv so I could catch some football.(It was Sunday in November) I was advised by the other hunters that it was broken. I then noticed that the satellite dish (pictured on the website for the lodge) was gone. Oh well, I thought as long as the hunting is good, everything would take care of itself. Mr. Hill showed a few hours later. It appeared he made a grocery run for the camp(nothing like waiting to the last moment). I paid Mr. Hill the remainder of my balance. He seemed irritated that I gave him a check, but I called two weeks prior to the hunt to ask if he wanted cash or check. When he did reply that he wanted cash I was already back in PA in vacation and did not receive the message until returning home from the hunt. So the evening before the hunt all the hunters just sat around and shot the breeze. The morning of the hunt Mr. Hill woke everyone up and served up breakfast. Mr. Hill then assigned everyone to a group. Each group had a guide take them (hunters) to their stands. I woke up with the hunters had breakfast and went back to bed after my eager friends left with a guide. At around 8:30 am a gunshot woke me up. I then saw Mr. Hill a few moments later. He advised me that he (hill) missed a bear at very short range.(That's funny he reassured me that the guides did not hunt) Later that day when it got dark and the hunting was over my friends returned back from hunting. They told me that they did not see a deer and that it was too foggy to see past 20 yards. In fact only one hunter saw a buck that was borderline legal and he(the hunter) shot it. During supper everyone else in camp did not see a buck.(keep this fact in mind for later reference) Nobody blamed Mr. Hill for a hard day hunting. Thats why it is called "hunting" and not "killing". While eating supper I noticed a different group of guys in the dining area there was seven of them. They seemed to know each other well and advised that they have been hunting here for years. After supper some of the 11 hunters that were staying in the lodge part of Hill's facility were asking each other about the extra hunters that were at summer. I told these guys that my friend who refered me to Mr. Hill said that Hill ran unguided hunts as well and that these extra hunters were probably hunting different property. Also my friends advised that one of Mr. Hill's highly profesional guides got lost and did not get my friends on stand till 7:00 am they left the cabin at 5:20 am. They(my friends) also stated that their highly profesional(check the website this term describes the service) guide also was toting a gun.(I guess professional guides in Africa tote guns, Hill's guides are "highly" profesional so they must carry guns as well. You never know when a wounded whitetail might charge a hunter in a tree stand) Anyhow alarms started going off in my head. I also found out that Hill's girlfriend was also hunting I saw her come back to the lodge wearing orange and carrying a gun so I assume that she was hunting. The next morning followed the same routine. Except at around 11:00 am Mr. Hill returned to the lodge. I asked him if I can ride with him. He said I could. He told me that he was putting on some drives. I asked if he needed some help. He provided my with some orange clothing and off we went. He than handed me off to a guide named Joe. Joe and I then proceeded to put on a drive. Joe also was carrying a rifle. I felt safer knowing that if a deer were to attack I had back up.(sarcasism) After the drive Mr. Hill called for some of the hunters to come out of the woods. I noticed it was the extra 7 hunters that were at supper the night before. These guys seemed nice enough, but there were supposed to be 11 hunters not 7 extra plus 3 guides and 1 girlfriend hunting. Now I was getting steamed. As these hunters came out and started talking I learned some of their names. After the pow wow we staged a drive for the extra 7. During the drive a smallish 11 inch spread 8 pointer was killed by a guy named Keith from NJ. For a PA deer it was a decent deer grossing a whopping75 to 80 B&C inches.(like most deer on the lodge's website) Keith was telling everyone that he was happy and that this was the first buck he has seen during the season.(the 2005 season) After the dressing of the the deer the extra seven headed back to the lodge. Mr. Hill asked me before heading back where was on of my friends ? I told him that my friend was still in the woods at another location.(that is very proffessional to not know where all your hunters are) My other friends was moved to a new location after he saw a bunch of doe and a spike.(why move when he was seeing deer all day) Day 2 was better than day 1 deer sighting wise, but I found out that everything promised was not delivered. Also during the morning of day 2 all of the hunters in the lodge complained that the water had run out that the toilets could not be flushed and showers could not be taken.(so much for scent control or hygeine) They extra 7 hunters were staying in the bed and breakfast part of the lodge and they did not complain about any lack of water. I feel the extra 7 hunters were great friends of Mr. Hill and that he took good care of them. That being said Mr. Hill should not have booked more hunters than he could handle. Hill's guides are not competent woodsman and they hunt while guiding. This is not a high level of profesionalism. The lodge is a basic hunting lodge except it does not have adequate water or t.v.(the website boasts digital tv). The odds are that a wallhanger buck is a spindly 8 pointer.(check out the website for pictures of the "Trophy potential") I felt that I was lied to. This gift to my good friends turned out to be a nightmare. Unless you are a VIP with Mr. Hill then you are out of luck. Mr. Hill got some of my money, but he won't get anymore.

His guides were very professional and had adequate knowledge of his 3800 acres. I passed on many smaller, legal bucks and on my second day of the hunt I scored a magnificant 8 point wall hanger. I booked this wild boar hunt for a present for my father. It was only a few hour drive so we did not spend the night at the lodge. I knew it wasn't going to be a real "hunt" when our "guide" had on jeans, a t-shirt, an orange vest and still smelled like he was working on the farm. As we were out in the woods he stumbled over rocks not seeming to care how much noise he made. We did shoot two decent boars. With a handgun this would have been more challenging, with a rifle it was too easy. The preserve is 1500 acres, it's just divided into sections, and the section we were hunting in was less than 100 acres. I'm glad we were'nt hunting elk there. The elk were almost tame and I walked to within 100 feet of one to take some picures, at least the boar ran around. Maybe I should've asked more questions. I paid to have them butcher our boars. Little did i know they butcher the boar, and throw all of the cuts into a huge plastic bag, mixing the two boars up, and leaving us to wrap and label all of the meat. That is what peeved me the most. They seem like nice enough people and the country side is quite beautiful. If they made a better effort this could be a great place. The "guide" told me they push through over 1100 hunters per year. 1100!!

I harvested a 14 point double split brow tine 162 class monster! What a great hunt. The lodge was very nice and quite comfortable after a long days hunt. The food was second to none. THERE WERE ONLY ABOUT EIGHT SHEEP, FOUR OF WHICH WERE CORSICAN AND ONE FALLOW AND A BUFFALO.THERE WAS A LOT OF HOGS RUNNING AROUND.WE WERE TOLD IT WAS 200 ACRES, IT WAS MORE LIKE 50 ACRES.I PAID FOR GOLD CLASS CORSICAN, WHICH THE GUIDE SCORED WHEN I WAS NOT AROUND, WHEN I GOT HOME I SCORED THE RAM MID BRONZE.ALSO THE GUIDE PUSHED THE RAMS AND CALLED THEM OVER SO I COULD SHOT THEM LIKE RAMS IN A BARREL.NOT AT ALL WHAT I EXPECTED
