Outfitter Response: No doubt about it, these guys had a tough hunt. For reasons known only to the moose, the moose disappeared during what is normally the peak of the rut. As the moose were not where they are usually found, we went looking for them – pushing through / cutting out old trails, to get into areas that hadn’t been hunted for many years, and then moving to an altogether new area. There was some very difficult terrain, hard riding, and not many moose seen until the last couple days. Note, however, that the next group of 3 hunters came in and killed 3 bulls in 4 days. That was unexpected, as, in previous years, we have always had to work much harder for our moose on the later hunt.Most of our camps are accessible only by air, and several are hunted for just 10 days, every 2 or 3 years. This means that our guides are not always familiar with the areas they are hunting - nobody is familiar with those areas. These are wilderness adventures – and the facilities are rustic, at best. However, these are the camps where we often get our best moose. These are not hunts for somebody who just wants to shoot a moose – they are hunts for people who want a remote wilderness hunt in an area where there could truly exceptional moose. We try to make all this clear to all of our clients before they book.
