Doug Gardner was previously part owner of Powder River Outfitters but now operates independently. Upon separation from Powder, the two outfitters basically split the leases 50/50 between them. They both operate out of Broadus, Montana on opposite sides of the Powder River. I rifle hunted with Powder River in 2007 and had a great hunt. I rifle hunted with Gardner Ranch in 2009 and also had a great hunt. Me and my buddy focused on whitetails and saw hundreds of deer. You see numerous bucks in the 110" to 120" range but you have to look a bit harder for deer over 130". We ended up tagging a 127" 8 point and 132" 10 point by the second day of the hunt. With some patience, you have a good chance at a 130" - 150" buck and a deer pushing B&C minimums is a possibility, but not common. The whitetails don't stand around like muleys so you need to learn to judge rack size quickly or you'll end up shooting one that's smaller than you'd like. Mule deer are also all over the place and are the focus of the majority of the hunters in camp. Accomodations are rustic, but adequate and the food and guides are excellent. You're paying for the tremendous amount of quality land that these guys have exclusive access to. I'll be going back.
