Despite ideal cold weather hunting conditions, the rut being under way, a trully excellent guide that knew the land in detail and worked his butt off from the crack of dawn to the dark of dusk, I was disappointed with both the quality and quantity of mule deer that we came across. I had one opportunity at a really nice buck. It came on the 3rd day. He was spooked out of a draw and the only shot I had was as he was moving out at 275 +/- yards. I missed. I saw maybe 10-12 bucks total. Only 4 were decent. On day 4, I opted to take a 22" wide, tall, deep forked 4x4 with kickers at the bases that brought it to a 6x8. I was satisfied. If I return to HVO I will pay the extra $$$ and book a hunt in one of their "restricted" access areas. The bucks taken from these during the week were all excellent. HVO runs a straight up, 100% fair chase, by the book hunting operation. The camp food is "ma-ma" made. Great table fare and more than the camp could possibly eat. Camp house is Spartan but more than adequate.
