This was my first ever big game hunt in Canada. I have hunted whitetail in the midwest for several years. Although this was my first guided hunt for a bear, it was not my first guided hunt. For nearly 10 years I have hired guides throughout the US for duck and goose hunting. Even though it is not big game, the emphasis is placed highly on the guide service. Mother nature plays an important factor in a successful hunt and a good guide service is there to balance the playing field. I interviewed 4 different guide services before selecting Chad and Savage Encounters. I had taken up archery in December of 2002 and decided that in late May '03 I would try and take a black bear. The guides, knowing this was my first archery hunt, gave me great advice, but did not treat me like a novice hunter. The camp layout and facilities were first class, especially our cook Rebecca. Every day I had bears enter my area which made for great entertainment. When I took my bear on the second evening of the hunt I could hardly contain my excitement and the guides of Savage Encounters were just as excited for me. The guides worked extremely hard to make sure that everyone in camp was able to take at least one bear. Two of the gentlemen I met in camp had hunted with another outfitter the previous year and could not get over the difference in professionalism and accomodations compared to the year earlier. I would recommend this operation to anyone who wants to enjoy a well run bear camp with terrific personnel and a great chance a taking a trophy black bear.
