Outfitter Review: Efford's Hunting Adventure - Newfoundland

Outfitter / Owner: Bob Efford

Hunter: Bruce Lastra

Animals Hunted: Moose/Caribou

Probably the BEST outfitter in Newfoundland. He was honest and reliable. Owns his own float plane and will bend over backwards to accomadate the hunters. He provides local tranportation to and from the airport, will arrange for butchering and boxing/shipping of meat and trophy. Overall, a #1 class outfitter....be very wary of the others in Newfoundland though.

In 2003 I hunted moose with the bow and saw 58 moose for the trip. Of the 58 at least 18 were bulls including some long range sightings of real monsters and a close encounter with a 14 pointer called in to 30 yards that did not present a shot. I had four encounters with moose at 30-35 yards, but no shot opportunities due to angles not conducive to good clean kills. This was a great amount of action especially since the weather was horrendous for hunting due to high temperatures that set the rut back weeks. In the 3 trips that I have taken when there were guys in camp rifle hunting ( a total of 4 weeks) I believe that all but one tag possessed was filled with moose or caribou (the guy that did not fill passed many moose on the first 3 days and got weathered out at the end of the week). I have seen bear and been in camp with bear taken as well.I'll be back in 2005 for another dose of moose hunting with the bow with the fine family that operates MVO

MooseValley is a great outfitter. I've bowhunted with them twice and plan on going back again. I've had stalks on Pope and Young caribou on both hunts and several stalks on bull moose. The food was great and alot of it. Everyone at MooseValley goes out of their way to make your hunt the best it can be. They are warm, friendly and very professional. They leave little room for inprovements. I can't wait for my next trip up.

Our family group of 5 hunted moose with ray the last week his camp was open for the 2002 season(last week of October). Even at that late date the 5 of us saw 21 moose and bagged 4.Ray and his crew were very familiar with their hunting area and knew where to look for game. They put out whatever effort was needed to try to get game for everyone. They have a very good area for moose and worked hard, hunting right up to the very last minute before leaving camp if necessary to help everyone fill their tags.Ray and his crew are a super group, all friendly, experienced, and extremely helpful. The accommodations are great, the food is excellent(and plentiful), and the hunting great. Will I be back? YES. The next time I plan a moose hunt, that's where I will go.What else can I say, they get an "A" Rating. I had been to Ontario 3 times previous to this hunt and hadn't even seen a moose. This trip was successful and a real joy.

Good comfortable lodging. The food and atmosphere were wonderful. The cook prepared exceptional meals, and she is also extremely knowledgeable about hunting the area. Ray has a long term staff that really know the area and the habits of the game. They work hard for you. This felt like family from the start. I will go back to Newfoundland, and it will be with this outfitter. Feel free to contact me for reference.

My Dad and I had the hunt of a lifetime. We took a Moose and a Caribou. Had a shot at a big 40" wallhanger but missed. Guides are willing to hunt extremely hard. We walked 20 miles a day in newfie Bogs which is hunting hard!! The camp is awsome both in scenery and accomodations. You can hunt within a 60 mile radius from camp. They have a good ARGO to get your gamee out and freezer/cooler on site. We had our game butchered locally for $160/80 for the Moose/Caribou!!! We got lucky with the weather. Saw Bear, beaver, eagles, Lynx, fox, salmon, grouse and many more. Saw 10 Moose during trip. Dad saw 8 moose. We will be going back soon!!

Wilderness Outfitters is probably the best hunt for the money. There are no hidden costs, no out landish promises, and no lies. The guides work hard at putting the hunter on the species hunted. It is left up to the individual to shoot or not to shoot. Ray Saunders runs a very professional and hunter friendly operation. The food is outstanding, accomodations are excellent, and the hospitality is second to none. I would highly recommend this outfitter to anyone who wishes to enjoy a quality hunt and the company of good people.

We booked our hunt early and kept in touch with outfitter, we got exactly what we wanted. Asked for a remote camp and got what we expected. Two hunters for caribou took two smallish stags one moose hunter took first bull he saw, a big 12 pt.Guides and camp cook did a nice job. Outfitter delivered what we asked for. Any camp equiptment that failed was quickly repaired or replaced. All game was taken the first day and 1/2. Probably could have taken better caribou if we held out.I Would use this outfitter again.

Hunted the 2002 season for moose on section 39 in Northern Newfoundland. Was treated very good. Food was very good and alot of it. Kinda expected to see more animals, but I was the only one in camp that didn't see very many. Just my bad luck. Two nice bulls around 40" was taken out of 7 hunters. The owner Martin seemed only concerned that I had a good time. Newfoundland seemed to be more of a challege than I thought it would be. I suggest good physical shape to really enjoy the hunt.

This was one of the best hunts I've been on. Moose Valley is a first-rate, very professional operation. All of the camp personnel are personable and do their best to ensure a quality experience. The guides are absolutely the best. Dean himself goes the extra mile to make sure there are no hitches in the legistics of the hunt. He also accommodateds unexpected changes in the itinerary very well. You can't go wrong with this hunt. There were five hunters in camp this week, all five tagged out by Wednesday.

Outfitter Review: Moose Valley Outfitters - Newfoundland

Outfitter / Owner: Dean Macdonald

Hunter: Grant Benson

Animals Hunted: Moose and Caribou

I am providing this information as a reference on Moose Valley Outfitters, operated by Dean Macdonald and his family in Newfoundland.I’ll lead off by saying that though I go on numerous guided hunts each year MVO is the best operation I have ever hunted with in over 20 years of taking such trips. I bow hunted with them in 2001 and took both a caribou (bow) and a moose (with rifle). I also bowhunted in 2002 for caribou and moose and took a caribou and stalked some of the 30 moose I saw. I’m going back in 2003 yet again for bow moose. To show that my positive feedback is not solely a result of my having taken game with them you should know that I bow hunted successfully with another outfitter (Owls Nest Lodge) in Newfoundland in 1999 for moose and 2000 for caribou, but after trying Dean’s operation out I would never hunt anywhere else in Newfoundland. Here’s a few reasons why:1) The operation is totally family run from the pre-hunt communication to the guiding, the cooking, and the full operation of the camp. Dean and his family personally are involved in it all, trusting nobody else to the welfare and satisfaction of their hunters.2) The hunt is a first class wilderness experience in that it is fly into to a remote and isolated area that only MVO operates out of. You will never see any locals or other outfitters anywhere in the area. The camp is very nice and comfortable in some of the best country on the island.3) The camp is personal and small with only 3-5 hunters a week. The guide ratios are all 1 to 1 which is perfect and not all that common in Newfoundland, at least not without an extra charge. The guides probably average 25 years of hunting experience or more and know the area and game intimately. They take getting you game PERSONALLY !4) If you are interested in bowhunting this is nothing new to MVO and the guides all have experience successfully guiding bowhunters. They do this not only during the two bow only weeks at the start of the season, but also during other parts of the season as well.5) If cost is a consideration you’ll find that MVO is right on par cost-wise to even a bit less than other hunts in the area. You get what you pay for and a lot more with their camp.6) Dean is more than accommodating to special needs a hunter may have and has options to work with people with special needs or restrictions. They are very professional in how they cater to the hunters various needs and different experience levels.7) The use of boats will greatly add to the hunting experience and remote areas are accessed by boats to reduce hunting pressure in areas closest to camp. The fact that this method of transportation is used instead of the ATVs that other outfitters use greatly adds to the experience in the field and makes it a more enjoyable hunt for everyone since it is not all done on foot. 8) The food prepared and always available in camp is second to none. You won’t lose weight on this hunt even if you’re hunting hard 10-12 hours a day.9) The guides are very good at finding game and then, as importantly, figuring out the strategy to get a hunter into range, be it 20 yards for a bow or 200 for a rifle. They are true pros at figuring out the stalk routes, the wind, and the ways to make it all come together for you as the hunter.10) The guides do a great job of taking care of game in the field both from a meat perspective and caring for hides and racks so that when you are flown out everything will be ready for you to take home however you are traveling.11) One thing you do need to keep in mind that as this is a small operation with limited tags it does book full well in advance of most other operations on the island. The reputation and the capacity normally keep Dean booked at least a year ahead, especially for moose.I could go on and on, but the point is made above. This is a first class operation. If you need more references go to the Bowsite at www.bowsite.com and search under “Moose Valley” or “Newfoundland” in both the moose and caribou forums you’ll get a lot of feedback on MVO as well.

Outfitter Review: Newfoundland Guide Service - Newfoundland

Outfitter / Owner: Bill Bryden

Hunter: Hal Ledbetter

Animals Hunted: Caribou, Moose, Black Bear

I made arrangements for a tent camp wilderness hunt for myself and my brother. On arrival we were not met and Bill Bryden seemed surprised we were in NF. That night he began to get some things together to take us hunting, basically amounting to a quick run to the grocery. Bryden was late because he had made no arrangements for our flight to camp. I had to pay the added cost of a larger aircraft to transport the camp gear and guides on top of our "outfitting" costs (apparently all of which went to paying his debts to other hunters). Bryden told us we would now be hunting from a cabin on Saviour Lake. He neglected to mention that he did not have permission of the owner, who arrived on the first hunting day and wanted us out. The cabin was a shambles and filthy beyond description. We had no form of light, which meant we could not hunt from dark to dark. Some of the food was half-eaten fare from Bryden's own refrigerator. We never saw a legal caribou or moose. Bryden ranted all week about his debts to other hunters from failed ventures in the arctic and apparently some unresolved issues from the preceding season. He had no functional binoculars and wore a white T-shirt when hunting. He admitted to poaching bears for gall bladders. When we were going to be evicted he failed even to summon the motivation to get us resituated. He talks a good game, but don't be fooled. The only reason that I have not sued him is that I know he has no assets.

This hunt left a very bad taste in my mouth. Out of the 4 guides at camp, 2 had never been to the camp before. I had to show my guide to the one spot!! The guides and camp cook were all very nice people; however, there were no animals to be seen. I only saw two confirmed moose (cow and calf) another person in party saw no moose. I should say that 2 members in the party shot a moose. One five point and one with pans. The condition of the camp was very nice. And the accomodations were excellent. The outfitter did not provide enough life jackets for the boats. Furhtermore, the outfitter led me to believe this was a fly-in hunt - It was a drive -in. (When I asked if this was a fly-in, he said "I have flyin hunts" and then proceeded to tell me about flight schedules, etc.Bottom line, the guides and cook were nice, the food was excellent, there were very few animals, and I wouldn't trust the outfitter.

This the second year that I have hunted with Moose Valley. I was very impressed with this outfitter last year and my impressions have not been diminished this year. Dean Macdonald delivers exactly what he says he will deliver. And he has great guides to back him up. This is a family owned and operated sporting camp. It takes only a few hunters each year in comparison to the bigger camps. Here you are included in the family and everybody pulls together as a team so that you will be assured of a successful, friendly, and fun hunt. Again this year I filled my moose tag with a twelve point bull and my caribou tag with a very respectable stag. I have booked with Dean already for the 2002 and 2003 moose and caribou hunts. A note about the caribou that I bagged there in 2000: It registered officially in the Boone & Crockett Alltime Record Book with a final score of 304 and 1/8. I don't think I can make a better recommendation than that.

I hunted for caribou the opening week of the 2001 bow season and harvested a stag by 9am of opening morning. I had a second tag which I didn't fill as we were looking for a bigger animal. Warmer than normal temperatures slowed game movement somewhat, but I still saw numerous caribou and moose. Dean and his crew are extremely hard working and will get you in position for a shot. Be prepared for a physical hunt as we probably walked 7-8 miles a day, very little of which was on a level ground. The entire operation is well run, and Dean catered to our needs throughout the week. My partner and I enjoyed this hunt. We both took nice young bull moose and better than average caribou. Our only complaint was there are few bear in this area. Guides were excellent and worked hard for us. The food and cook were great. Be in as good condition as possible, this hunt is remote. You will be walking a lot in some rugged terrain to get your game. All game was retrieved via helicopter. There will be no logging road kills on this hunt. With the exception of not finding bear this hunt was all we expected. We would go again in a heartbeat.

Camp equipment was extremely poor. The remote camp required hunting via boat. Only one boat was operating for a 5 day hunt for four hunters and it only had a 2.5 HP motor! Hunters had to take turns attempting to go out in the boat. The weather turned bad and the motor was unable to navigate the rough water on the river. Hunting from camp was near impossible - very thick terrain with many bogs - dangerous to hunt on foot. Numerous complaints were filed, via writing and telephone, with the Outfitter and they have yet to respond and the hunt was in October of 2000. No moose was taken by any hunter at that camp and only one 1/2 rack was sighted during the entire week. We were told to buy bear tags and there was no chance of taking a bear at this location. The literature mailed contains a brochure picturing many animals. All persons pictured are relatives of the outfitter. (I wish I would have known that before.) I read about this outfitter in Peterson's Hunting, obviously they provided the writer with a great hunt to lure in other suckers. Would not go back or recommend this outfitter to anyone! All they want is your money!I still want to take a moose. Anyone having any suggestions on a reputable place to go, please let me know.

This was my second trip to Newfoundand to hunt moose. The first trip was with Owl's Nest and was a total wash out in every respect. Wilderness Outfitters was highly recommended by other hunters and I found it to be everything that it was supposed to be. My son and I both killed out moose, and saw other moose. There were five hunters in camp that week hunting moose and everyone filled his tag. The owner (Ray Saunders) was in camp most of the time overseeing things, but when he had to be gone things were still run in a very professional manner. The guides do everything that they can to make your hunt a successful and enjoyable hunt. If anyone is interested in hunting in Newfoundland I would highly reccommend that they contact Ray at 709-489-7829 or e-mail at rsaunders@nf.sympatico.ca.I not only recomend this outfit, but I'm booked to return this fall and hunt moose again.

I have been on about 12 guided hunts throughout N.Amer. This outfitter is up at the top of the list. I hunted with my son the last week of Sept, 2000. This is now one of our more memorable hunts. The guides go out of their way to be helpful and work as a team to help the hunters succeed. Be prepared to hunt a full day if the caribou are on the move. The guides will have you in the field before dawn and after dark yet can cater to you if a less physical hunt is needed. We had one hunter in camp who could barely walk a 100 yards yet was able to fill both his licenses. The equipment was tiptop and never let you down. The cook and food were also excellent.

Unseasonably warm weather kept the game movement to a minimum for our stay. Under miserable conditions the guides were hard working, courteous and optimistic.Their knowledge of the game animals and terrain prevailed in the end and I took a bull moose.Although I was only hunting moose, I could have easily taken a caribou and a bear.It is some of the most ruggedly beautiful country I've ever hunted. The whole outfit is a family run operation and the evenings around the table after dinner took me back in time to a place before the video games and televisions and computers. A place where you just enjoyed sharing good company and a good nights sleep. Yes sir let me tell you, for six days despite the bad weather, I was as close to heaven as I've ever been. Dean and his crew operate a very high class, 1st rate operation. Lots of animals in his area, Guides know the area well and are great jugdes of animals. You will not find a better operation anywhere nor a better person than Dean McDonald. See you in 2002 Dean. Thanks, Al Rochefort

Outfitter / Owner: Ron Parsons

Hunter: Larry Leusing

Animals Hunted: Moose, Caribou, Bear

Guides were mixed in experience and willingness to hunt but the guides were better than the outfitter. Equipment was extremely poor condition. Outfitter's ad said 90% success rate on moose. Of 5 hunters we took 2 moose (40%) success rate but we took every moose that was within range. In 6 days of hunting 5 hunters saw a total of 7 moose, most at over a mile distance and not accessible or the guides weren't willing to hunt them. Caribou hunting was very good and all tags were filled. Bear hunting was not good, no bears or bear sign seen. You can easily get a better hunt.

This was my first big game hunting experience with an outfitter, and I think it would be next to impossible to beat. I will remember that trip the rest of my life, and only can hope to have the opportunity to go back again some time soon.

On the first morning of my hunt I took a nice bull moose and on the second day I took a possible B & C caribou, yet to be scored. The next four days I just relaxed and glassed the plentiful game.

Very small hunting area - 5 square miles. This outfitter offers five weeks of hunting, and five hunters per week which equates to 25 moose in five weeks all within five square miles !I was promised a one-one-one guide, but there were five hunters and only four guides.I was deceived and lied to - I would not go back for free.

Guides were unprepared for the hunt, some were new to area, cook short on supplies, generator too small to run meat cooler, doubled up guides and hunters even though hunters had different licenses and had paid for one-on-one guides, constant use of foul language...

A true fly-in camp where there are no roads - just a few boats, your feet, and plenty of game. Very amiable and experienced staff who work hard to make your hunt successful. A great "homey" feel with showers and flush toilets, a good meat house, and isolation that guarantees a quality experience. Would look at this operation very seriosuly for moose as well.

I HAVE HUNTED HERE TWICE. GOT A MOOSE BOTH TIMES. I THOUGHT ENOUGH OF THE PLACE AND THE PEOPLE, THAT I BROUGHT MY WIFE UP FOR A SUMMER VACATION. YOU WILL NEVER FIND A PLACE THAT TREATS YOU BETTER, AND HAS BETTER ACCOMODATIONS. COMPLETE TO SAUNA AND HOT TUB. I CANNOT RECCOMEND THIS PLACE HIGHLY ENOUGH. YOU ARE TRULY TREATED LIKE A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY

Animals Hunted: WOODLAND CARIBOU

THE EQUIPMENT WAS BROKEN DOWN AND VERY OLD. THE GUIDE I HAD WAS A VERY YOUNG KID WITH LITTLE HUNTING EXPERIENCE. HE DIDN'T WANT TO HUNT IN THE AFTERNOON, ALTHOUGH I UNDERSTOOD BECAUSE THERE WAS NO GAME TO HUNT. THE BLACK BEAR BAITED BEAR HUNTING WAS A JOKE!! THE BEAR HUNTERS THAT HUNTED IN THE EVENING WERE RIGHT BESIDE THE GRAVEL ROADS AND HADN'T BEEN BAITED UNTIL THEY GOT THERE. I WILL SAY THAT RON PARSONS TOLD ME AND ONE OTHER HUNTER THAT WE COULD COME BACK IN OCTOBER AND WE ENDED UP KILLING A CARIBOU. THERE WERE STILL VERY FEW ANIMALS. THIS IS AN OUTFIT THAT RUNS AS MANY HUNTERS AS THEY CAN THROUGH THE PROCESS. THIS BUSINESS IS ABOUT MAKING MONEY AND MAKE SOME THEY DO. THEY DEFINITELY DON'T SPEND IT ON EQUIPMENT.

Hunted with Owls Nest in Sept of 99 for bou and black bear, after a 15 mile walk through the bogs the first day we head back to the lodge only to discover that all of the boats are gone so we cant get back to the lodge, I decide to go to my bear stand which he baits at this time. Three of us went paying for 1 on 1 guides which meant that 4 of us rode around in one truck. We never saw a bull bou, the equipment was constantly broke. The head guide got the first pick of areas so if he wasnt your guide to bad. I did kill a bear over 21 inches but it was luck.

Although I contracted for a 2X1 hunt, for the caribou, it was 5 hunters with two guides most of the time. Once I got my caribou, it was difficult to get the guide to stay out in the field even though I was the only hunter going for moose. Excuses included, it's too windy, the truck needs to be looked at, etc. It seemed he wanted to socialize with the other guides who were finished for the week. Repeated letters to Ron Parsons have gone unanswered, I've gotten no response except to acknowledge receipt of my original letter of complaint. Yet Peterson's Hunting continues to rave about this outfitter, one of their larger advertisers.

Outfitter Review: Pine Ridge Lodge - Newfoundland

Outfitter / Owner: Wayne Holloway

Hunter: Joe Lesko

Animals Hunted: Moose. Black Bear

The facilities, equipment, the guides and the camp staff are superior. Even though I was not hunting caribou, everyone else in camp was and they all tagged out. I saw caribou everyday. I took a moose on the opening day of the hunt and saw a total of 6 moose during the hunt. I hunted black bear the remainder of the week and saw no bear. October is getting a little late for quality bear huning in Newfoundland, but the moose and caribout hunting at this time is very good. Wayne Holloway and Pine Ridge Lodge do an excellent job of taking care of their clients and getting you in a position to take your trophy.

Animals Hunted: Moose, Caribou

The country was beautiful, the guides worked very hard to get us our game. On the third day of my hunt I shot my seven point Moose and on the forth day of my hunt I got my record Woodland Caribou. He had 27 points, double shovels and a 43 inch spread. My hunting partner Mike scored on his first day with a 10 point bull moose. There was 100% kill on Bull Moose in camp for that week. We have already booked another hunt for 2001. Adrian and Carol did everything in their power to make this a hunt of a lifetime.

Kevin Decker runs an excellent operation. My plane was 3 hours late and he was still waiting at the airport with a smile and a handshake.everything that he promised to do he did and then some. The hunt was an excellent experience with agood population of animals trophy quality was excellent.I hunted the early bow season and even though I was the only hunter that week He opened up one of his camps. The guide was excellent and the camp very comfortable. Thecare of the meat was great and 18 hours after it was dropped off it was waiting at the airport vacumed packed and frozen. Great meat prosesser. Very smoothly run operation. Can't wait to go back. All this on a 1/2price donated hunt!

Outfitter / Owner: Ray Broughton

Animals Hunted: Caribou/Moose

Ray and his staff work hard from start to finish. Lodge and food, etc. all very good. The guides and cooks are great. They know where the game is and will do what it takes for their hunters to succeed. They have an in house taxidermist who will take care of your trophies. I would recommmend this hunt especially for those looking for a woodland caribou.

Outfitter Review: Owl's Nest Lodge - Newfoundland

Outfitter / Owner: Ron Parsons

Hunter: Bob Colby

Animals Hunted: Caribou & Bear

We were booked for the Bow-only hunt. We were told we would see hundreds of Caribou. We hunted hard all day every day for a week. We saw very few animals and mostly Does and yearlings, only six stags. We never saw anything that would resemble a trophy. Four Caribou were taken in camp, all very young Stags, and the hunters were glad to get those as game was so scarce. Our guides were great and worked exceptionally hard. They are the only thing that kept the hunt from being a disaster. My overall impression of this outfit is its a hunter mill. Run as many hunters through as possible with no regard for the quality of the experience. The equipment of the outfitter was in extremely poor condition, especially the vehicles used to transport hunters.

Outfitter Review: Brophy & Sons Outfitter - Newfoundland

Outfitter / Owner: Stedman Brophy

Hunter: Mark Krom

Animals Hunted: Canadian Moose; Black Bear

Before we were greeted with a hello we were asked if we had our money. The camps didn't have any radio communication that worked. Bad for safety. We were surprised with a 9 mile cross-tundra hike to get to the hunting area. Lived in a makeshift lean-to with peanut butter and Vienna sausage as our meals. After I shot a bear Brophy said he didn't have a CITES permit to get it across the international border. It took 4 months and $250 extra to get the bear from U.S. Fish & Wildlife impound. Although we all got Moose and I got a bear it was a very poor experience. Brophy talks out of both sides of his mouth and wouldn't give a definite answer. This review comes 11 months after my experience.

When the outfitter was informed of our LOUSY hunt,he tried to blame the booking agent for making promises and getting our hopes up too high. When in fact, we talked to Mr. Parsons personally on several occasions by phone and NOT to our booking agent. Then he blames the weather we had,in his second breath. If you see his ads in the different magazines,he boasts of 95%-100% success on moose AND caribou---PLEASE! Five of us hunted as a group. After 5 full days of hunting WE saw exactly 2 moose. Both were calves and one of those was lying down dying from another hunter's bad shot and was put out of its misery. The guides we had were great. These guys worked hard for us. I have talked to 3 other men who hunted with Owl's Nest with the same results. Mr. Parsons runs several lodges.Of these 8 hunters(myself being 1 of the 8) hunted 3 different lodges and 3 different dates with the same miserable results. That speaks for itself if you digest the numbers. Newfoundland is supposed to be noted for its moose and bear. Of the 4 moose and 3 bear licenses, only one moose lic. was used and that was for the aforementioned dying moose calf. NO bear spoor was seen by anyone in our group. 'Nuff said. If you go to Owl's Nest be sure to take plenty of Vaseline or K Y Jelly. You never know when you may need it with the weather being what it is and all.
