Outfitter Review: Milk River Outfitters - Montana

Outfitter / Owner: Eric Albus

Hunter: Don R. Goffinet

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

We hunted der and antelope in the Missouri Breaks south of Havre, MT, for many years with a friend. After he died, we were very fortunate to find Milk River Outfitters. It is a first rate operation and the hunting is terrific for mule and white tail deer, antelope and game birds. Buffalo hunting is also available (I got one in 2006) and through a drawing, chances for elk in the Missouri Breaks and mountain sheep are also possible. We have hunted with MRO for 5 years and have had great hunting each year.

I have hunted with Milk River Outfitters the last three years and booked for another.Never having been on a hunt prior and with so many oufitters out there, that choosing one can be hard. I heard about Milk River Outfitters via hunting videos. After talking with Eric and several of the references, I booked a hunt.Upon my arrival, I was greeted like I have known his family for years. I arrived early and given the option to start early. Needless to say, my hunt was over in about an hour and I couldn't have been more excited. This past year, 2007, I hunted again with Eric and the guys. The first morning we were all over good deer, however we were looking for something special. After seeing lots of deer, I saw several that were real close to me taking but still wanted to wait. Later that afternoon we found what we were looking for and I took a GREAT 180inch 5x5 with about a 6 inch sticker. It was the deer of lifetime for me.Hunts are in no way cheap and picking a good outfitter can be scary. I can't say enough about Eric, Jared, Darren, Brian, Cody, Jimmy and the rest of the crew. Over the years it is no longer a business relationship but more like hunting with old friends. I keep in touch throughout the year with most of the guys and look forward each fall to going out, hunting and visting with my friends. Everything is 100% and they go out of the way to make sure your hunt is the best. If you book, I know you will have a GREAT time.If anyone should have any questions please feel free to email.

I've done 5 Elk hunts,2002-2006, in their tent camp. I've taken 3 bulls, (2) 5x4 (1) 5x5 and 1 miss on a 6 point. This is a great back country horse back hunt in an area with a very good elk population. The staff is professional and knowledgeable of the area. Take your hiking boots and go in good shape. I killed my first bull at 10,500 feet. You'll be hunting above the tree line, 7,500 feet and up. The scenery is rugged and breath taking.

My experience with UCO has been limited to unguided hunts. I have been very pleased with the help and their knowledge of the area and their recommendations on where to go to hunt. I was successful with getting a bull but passed on cows opportunities. I have been 3 years and hope to get there this archery season if successful in the draw.

Tough country, real hunting. You earn what you get. Hard working guides, 90% very experienced. Nice lodge and food. Great value, half the price of New Mexico. I hunted with this outfitter in Sept 07 for elk. The owners son was my guide, who worked extremely hard to get us on an elk. We were in elk every day, although they weren't cooperating with us till the end of the week. Almost connected on the last day, but just wasn't offered a shot by the bull, which was only 30 yrds away. The experience was fantatistic. These guys worked very hard and were very considerate. Highly recomend these guys.

Have hunted with Mike several times the past 25 years. Have killed a Bull Elk and Deer on every hunt. Killed Antelpoe every time I drew a tag. Largest Elk taken scored apx 340.Largest Whitetail 14 point score apx 145-150. Should have e reasonable oppurtunity at a Bull and a Whitetail or Mule Deer. Hunt how you are able, horseback, 4x4 or walking. I recommend to enjoy fully be able to walk. The mountains are reasonable. Also took a nice Cat with Mike.

Outfitter Review: Ford Creek Ranch - Montana

Outfitter / Owner: Liz/Travis Barker

Hunter: Tony Mouncer

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule deer

I did harvest a very respectable muley 30 7/8 wide. 4x5 and kickers on both side's with eyeguards. BC score 183 5/8". This deer was a 9 year quest that I have been on and should have been the high of my life. Not so!!! As far as Ford creek goes. Find a map. Find Ford creek. Apply. Get tag. Go!!! It is all public access right down to the ranch that sit's in a tiny land withholding through the state. Travis is a great salesman and if B.S. was a blizzard he would be the king of snow! Go sell cars Travis!! For my guide Larry Zinger Very very good. We had our out's but mangaged to get it together every time. Larry was very skilled with the wilderness, horses and did just fine. Just needed more time in the area. Lack of area knowledge hurt this hunt, but was not his fault. Travis once again say's who goes where. There is game in this area! You do have to work! It's the Rocky Mountains for Christ sake! Cold. Snowy. and did I say cold! You do not need outfitter if your willing to work and be prepare for extreme weather -12 several days. My Opinion!! This is a migration hunt only and tough country. Come prepared and Don't book with Ford creek unless it changes hand's. there is word that Barker's are selling out imagine that!

Hunted with Russ in 2007, had a wonderful hunt. We hunted from his lodge that simply is the finest you will find anywhere! He runs a year round outfitting business so it is not just a hunting lodge. The meals, accomodations, equipment and guides were exceptional. These guys really know the elk and the country. I passed on several smaller bull in an effort to take one of the bigger bulls we were seeing most every day. As is turned out I took a smaller 5 x 6 on the second to last day of the hunt. Great hunt, great people, every thing Russ had advertised. Hope to be back with him in 2009!

Outfitter / Owner: Tracy Weyer

Animals Hunted: Elk

All huntable elk that were seen were on a private ranch that could not be hunted. My guide tried very hard but was not familiar with the area prior to our hunt. This was supposed to be a hunt on ATV's and our guide had to use one of ours as he said there were none available to him. Food was in short supply(one box hamburger helper for four grown men)and we paid for gas for the ATV that the guide used. The location of our hunting camp was changed by cell phone when we were three hours away and we were the only two hunters and little planning was put into our hunt. The guide that we were supposed to have left shortly before we arrived for personal reasons and we were left with a very nice young man who tried. It was as if Tracy had to do something to take care of us in order to keep all the money we had given him. We learned that all that you read cannot be believed and if we hunt again, we will do much more aggressive research.

Please see my prior 2006 review. This year was even more remarkable due to a viral infection that killed many of the antelope and deer. In spite of this, the hunt was a huge success for all involved and as usual, everyone in camp tagged out on both antelope and mule deer. I have hunted nearly every section of North America, this is the best hunt with the most outstanding outfitters and hunters you will ever meet. More importantly, I had personal issues that caused me to miss my first hunt dates, Dwane simply said "come when you can and we'll fit you in", that speaks volumes about the quality of the individuals you will meet here.

My son and I harvested a 30 7/8" buck & above average 4pt on 3rd day and saw many quality bucks every day. So why are we angry? I just wrote seven paragraphs to explain and erased them all, not halfway through explaining the deceit, arrogance, misrepresentation and total disrespect of this outfitter. Over the past 40 years I've had the pleasure of hunting many regions with numerous folks and entertained outfitter friends in my home. During that time I've been to 2 County Fairs, an oyster feed at the Grange Hall and a goat roping on The Reservation. But I've never before seen such gross negligence and lack of concern for paying customers. If you want your meat thrown in the dirt, packed unprotected on a mule's back and tossed on a horse barn floor with instructions that "there it is, do what you want with it" then Travis Barker might be right up your alley. If you don't mind being sent on a Moby Dick whale hunt into an elkless basin while your outfitter takes 2 of his guides (and no clients) to the migration route, kills a bull then hides it behind his cabin then I'm sure you'll get along fine with this egomanic Banty Rooster. As for my son and I, we left two days early absolutely heartsick. Tell me how many folks you know who harvest a 30 inch buck leave camp with such low emotions. Thanks Travis for spoiling a lifelong dream. Now for the good news. Rumor has it that the Barkers may be selling out. Watch for that to occur before giving up on Ford Creek. It is indeed an awesome place with excellent stock and tack, inspirational vistas and a willing support staff. A new owner/outfitter is about all it realy needs. Contrary to prior postings - There are plenty of bucks and bulls and I have the photos to prove it.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail / Mule Deer

My dad hunted for Mule Deer and I hunted for Whitetail from 11/13 - 17 2007. We saw so many mule deer we couldn't even count them. On one day we saw close to 100 BUCKS including 4x4's, 5x5's, and a 6x7. My dad shot a nice 4x4 on the evening of the second day after passing on dozens of other bucks (some that were better!). We split our time between Whitetail and Mule deer hunting. I ended up hunting 2 evenings and 2 mornings before taking a nice 10 pt that scored over 131". He was unique in the fact that he only had a 10 1/4" inside spread but was very heavy with palmated beams. I saw about 22 whitetail bucks before taking him despite the lousy weather (warm and very windy). About half were decent 8 pts or better and two were likely bigger than what I shot but didn't offer an opportunity. This outfitter has access to a lot of prime land and we hunted a different area each day. Great hunt and I plan to go back.

The guides would take us out in the morning and walk us til we just about drop in the morning then we would go in for lunch then do it again for the afternoon hunt. The first 3 days we didn't see an animal. The guide would brag of all the elk he guided hunters in on and got but couldn't find one for us????? I thouhgt after guiding 4 weeks of bow hunting and 3 weeks of rifle hunting they would have some ideal where the elk, muley, and whitetals were even in the peak of the deer rut they couldn't find any. They also told some of the other hunters there were no problems with wolves and no forest fires where we would be hunting LIES. Every place we went we found wolf tracks and about 55,000 acres burnt! Out of 6 hunters I was the only one leaving with an animal.

I hunted in mid November 2007 with HVO for the SIXTH time in 9 years. Of the 15 guys in camp, 15 tagged out with nice muleys. We saw over 100 deer on a couple of days, and at least 2 or 3 shooters each day. Both my partner and I tagged out with nice bucks, and the food, as always, was unbelievable. We hunted with a new guide named Troy, and he made up for his limited experience on the two ranches we hunted with his enthusiasm and desire to go the extra mile to spot big bucks. We hunted hard, from first light to last light, which is just the way we like it. We even hit a monster 8 point whitetail our first morning while driving 60 MPH to our hunting area. Talk about excitement!!

On the second day, we enjoyed some fantastic prairie dog shooting. We will definitely be hunting with Bearpaw again.

This was the worst, most overrated hunting trip, I have ever been on in my life. We were promised 10 to 15 shot opportunities a day inside of 200 yards at mule deer in the 24" to 30" range. As it was a so called trophy exclusive hunt, what a joke. We seen one deer after dark the guide wanted to shoot and another at the end of the week at almost 500 yards away. A great way to flush $5,000 down the toilet, I would be more than happy to give all the details to anyone who wants them on my email address it will certainly save you a ton of money.

I just returned from hunting elk on the 5E ranch(elk creek family outfitters) in north central Montana. A hunt of a lifetime seems appropiate to say without hesitation. This area is remote enough to hold a large herd of elk and it does. It is also surrounded by miles of private property.I shot my bull a 6x7 on the first day with a bow and my friend connected on day four with a 7x7 after having about 8-10 close encounters with some real slammers. It is difficult to put into words the great time we had with good, friendly, knoledgable people who love to hunt as much as i do.We hunted deep coulees mountain meadows and irrigation ponds.Dave and Abe father and son were our hosts, both are bow hunters who call, rattle and know how to get em comin(sometimes on the run). I have been hunting whitetails my whole life and when I started hunting out west (Wyoming/Montana)I became infatuated with mule deer and have been constantly searching for opportunities to chase the deer of my dreams.Last fall(2007) over Thanksgiving Mark Lees and myself both killed the biggest deer we had ever killed in our lives.Mark had never shot any whitetail bigger than a basket rack and I had killed 2 mule deer around the 25 inch range in previous trips out west so I wanted to try for a bigger deer and Jamie put us both on the deer we had dreamed of shooting.Mark shot a beautful 24 inch mule deer on the 3rd day of the hunt and I shot a huge bodied 26 inch mule deer.I went turkey hunting afterward and shot one within 15 minutes after stepping out of the truck. We also had some fun prairie dog hunting. This was definitely one of my best hunts ever.Jamie also showed pictures of previous hunts and a bow hunter shot a huge bull elk and a nice mule deer on his hunt.As I looked threw the pictures I couldn't believe the quality of the animals and Mark's and my deer would now be included in these pictures on his website.

Outfitter / Owner: Ralph Johnson

Hunter: Richard Talley

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule Deer

I Went with a group of 7 from Arkansas. They drove I flew. Ralph Johnson said he had someone that could pick me up at the airport. I had to have someone else pick me up at the airport because Ralph Johnson would not return my call after he recieved our money. When we got to Lodge I fould out we were (all 7) staying in a cabin which should have been for 3. There were only 3 cots, no beds, which we had been promised. We had to ask for 2 hours for 4 more cots. Army cots, no pads. Three of us sleeped in the kitchen. Seven men in a 400 SQ. FT. cabin. an one small bath, and were 1 mile from the lodge. If I had a way to the airport and a flight, I would have left that first night. Five out of the seven wanted to leave also, but we thought the hunting would be worth the terrible accomidations. Well we were wrong. The next morning 4:45 at the lodge no Ralph or guides, cold cereal and make your own toast. There were 28-30 hunters with six guides plus Ralph. Most of us had 4:1 guide ratio. All we did the first morning was take a horse ride, never got off the main trail, saw no elk or deer, and we were back in the camp at 10:00 am. We were told we would have a lunch packed and hunt all day. We were also told this was a 1:1 or 2:1 guide ratio. It did get better the rest of the time it was 3:1 ratio. The cook left the second day so we had a 20 year old kid from town that cooked. Food was Fair at best, not what was expected. In the afternoons we road around in the guides truck. This was a joke. I did kill a 4x4 muley, spotted by one of the my guys in the truck. It was 800 yards away. The guide said it to far away. We made him stop the truck and I spent 30 minutes to be able to get a shot, he did not want mess with it because it was 30 min. until shooting time was over.I kill him and we got him out ok. We took him to camp an hung him from the tack room porch. They did not have a skinning pole.GO FIGURE. I was dropped off the 3rd and 4th afternoon to hunt, and fould out later that you must be with a guide all of the time. Third day one guide quits, now down to 5. Several hunters came in and left the 1 day. We should have. It never got any better. A couple of our guys did kill elk,one on his own. Back to the beginning. We were told we would be the on 7 people in camp that week. There was an average of 20+ hunters. We were on public land with all of the locals and other outfitters. There was nothing to see 50-60 hunters a day. This was my first guided hunt to Montana and maybe my last. I would hope these guys are the worst of the worst. As I close FRAUD comes to mind. Animals Hunted: Deer and Elk

I was promised a 1x1 hunt with an experienced guide. What I got (when I actually got a guide) was a group of 4-10 hunters with 2 or 3 18 year old guides who didn't know the difference between a trophy and a dink or the definition of legal/ethical hunting behavior. Oftentimes we were not supplied with a guide or horses and were expected to "road hunt" along with 50,000 resident hunters. Never got closer than 600 yards to a game animal thanks to the guides, but without a guide my partner and I were able to get decent deer (as well as helping another hunter get one) and got within 150 yards of 700 elk coming across single file, but no legal bulls in the herd! I was cussed at by the guides and challenged to a physical altercation. We had 12+ guys sharing a tiny 6'x6' bathroom that was never cleaned. No hot breakfasts were served, just cold cereal and toast. No guides provided after the first 2 hours of daylight. At least half of the hunters left early, including us who hunted 2 days and left when we were abandoned on the third morning 2 miles from the road on an icy wind-exposed ridge in sub-freezing conditions. Very unsafe people to hunt with. Guides were also herding the wintering cow elk and running them back and forth, for no reason other than to do it. I would not go on this hunt again if it was free and that God's honest truth!

Have hunted twice with Crossheart Outfitters and both experiences were excellent.I scored on a very nice 6x6 bull in archery season and my partner took a great 6x5-lots of action, great guys and allot of fun-they knew what they were doing and hunted hard but at my pace when it got tough. There had been fires earlier in the summer and we hunted a different area than planned. They kept us up to speed about the fires and said they would refund our deposit if we didn't want to come, but we opted to go for it and glad we did. I later went to Mexico and took a super Desert Sheep with Bruce the following year. Excellent guide and very experienced.Have booked for 2007.

If you have read the others comments, that just about sums up my frustration. I have filed a complaint with the state and am considering legal action if that tells you anything. Hunting should be enjoyable -- this was not. And I shot a beautiful 6x6 elk on Veteran's Day. Larry Riley is the only guide in camp with any sense but even as good as he was, it doesnt make up for how big of a piece of s$#% Ralph Johnson is. I am one of those who left early -- three days because of the unsafe conditions, lousy food and accomodations and general bad attitudes of the guides and owners. After I demanded Larry and 1x1 service, I was given it. Immediately after my elk was down, I was reassigned to a party of three hunters to one guide -- not what I paid for. I only hope more people see this site, run this guy out of business and he lives on his mountain and starves.

Animals Hunted: mule deer, elk , pronghorn

Duane is the first outfitter who lies about how big the game animals are. Most of them are bigger than he tells you on the phone. Vitually all of the mulies I saw were at least Pope and Young. I Hit a big one that I didn't find. Arrowed a nice goat and passed a 20 yard broadside on a cow elk because of the 6 by 6 behind her. A muskrat in the wallow spooked an elk calf and the bull followed the calf. I rebooked this year before I left last year. My buddy had 3 big bull elk inside 40 yards and didn't shoot. He blew shots on goats. Got the jitters I guess. With a little bit of luck I could have gone 3 for 3 on a five day hunt. I don't know how it could have been better even with the horrible weather we had.

Where do I begin. What a crook, cheat, and liar. There were 8 of us and we paid for 1:1 and some of us 2:1 hunter to guide ratio. What we had was mostly 4:1 ratio and it would have been worse but some hunters in camp hunted on their own and many got mad and left. Some hunters came saw the conditions and left. The guys that got their hunt through RMEF did get a refund. Over 30 hunters there the first morning with only 6 guides plus the owner for a total of 7 people. One guide quit while we were there. Our guide that we were assigned the second day didn't show the first day because he said he was just too tired. All we did was horseback ride the first day on the main trail. We never got off the beaten path. I asked our guide about staying out all day and he laughed. I was originally told we could hunt daylight to dark but found out different. Our guide was late every morning and we usually left camp near shooting time. The evening was even worse since he wouldn't pick us up until about 2PM or even 2:30PM. I was full of hate at this point. My cousin did kill a mule deer about 15" wide and we were happy for a bit. Our guide had a $8 Winchester knife that was dull as heck. I loaned him my knife and he did quarter it for us but my gosh it took an eternity and he even went and got a helper. On a positive note he spotted the deer and this was the highlight of the trip for all 8 of us. Now, more bad stuff. When we got there there were no bunks for us like we were told but they finally did get some army style cots. The small cabin which was only a tiny one bedroom that the 8 of stayed in was maybe, shoot it was tiny to say the least. Actually it worked out to be fun since we were jammed in there like sardines. Painters tape and paint trays still in the room from it being built. There was no broom or trash can or trash can liners or even the smallest thing like even a single match to start the fire. Now for the real problems. There were too many people at our outfitters and at his brothers who also was an outfitter down the road. They been fighting so they were herding the elk cows away from each other out on Decker Flats near Jardine. Back to that $8 dull knife. Now my cousin who we will just call "CUS" gets pissed off and says he'll go off on his own and picks his own spot and whacks a big 5x6 elk which happens to be the biggest killed at this outfitters so far this year and this is the week before Thanksgiving. Cus goes back and gets help and me and our guide and our crew go back to survey the elk. Guide says we can handle it. Again, he has a $8 dull knife. I gut the elk myself with my second knife of the trip and start quartering it. The guide did help some at this point. We were all pissed because he didn't have a sharp knife or would go get a pack mule or any other assistance. It was steep. Finally we insist that we get some help and Ralph comes and packs the head/antlers out with 2 guides. They were pretty tough for sure but they were pissed we asked for help. I thought that was why you paid for an outfitter so that you can use his expertise and equipment to get out an animal. My guide slept while we were hunting on 2 hunts but on one of them he slept too much. Guide has not only killed an elk but says he wants to shoot one on this hunt if we don't care and we get one first. He did go a great job of glassing. We found some elk on the Yellowstone boundary and he wanted to try and circle them instead of shooting the bull at 275yrds. They ran back in the park. Then next day we saw 4 bull elk on the boundary and my friend killed a great 6x7 but again we was by himself without a guide. Our guide came to the rescue with that same dull $8 knife. I'm frantic an this point when he says "you seem to like to gut elk so go ahead and gut this one too". I refuse but agree to help cause I want to watch a pro. He did a good job but had to borrow my third knife. Fraud, Fraud, Fraud. We were told we were the only ones in camp that week and there were tons of hunters. We were on public land so there were tons of others. I thought that the food was good or above average but most mornings were just cereal and many hunters complained about the food. We did ride horses in what I would call unsafe and icy conditions and since we were always late he wanted to run the horses on ice. I can't descrive how bad this place was so please don't waste your money. Most guides were 18-19 and tough but just started guiding this year or last year. I'm sure I'm leaving out a bunch.

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

We hunted with Tom on a fall Black Bear hunt in the Bitterroot Wilderness Area on a pack in 5 day hunt. In Montana it's all spot and stalk and it's tough hunting. We hunted hard for five days and did not see a bear but we saw Elk and Moose everyday. Tom keeps two hunters and one guide per camp so it's not a large camp. The meals were good and the guide worked hard day in and day out. Looking back I would hunt the area a little diferent and I think that I could find a bear.

We rifle hunted in 2004 for elk - the second week in November. There were a total of six hunters in camp. To be fair the weather was too nice for elk hunting, and Bob knows a lot about hunting. Unfortunately, Bob doesn't guide. Our guide had been hired just that year, was very young, and had never killed an elk before. We knew more about elk hunting then he did. The process was that the guide would drive us to the hunting area, drop us off with directions on where we should go, then pick us up later. Most of the time our guides directions were wrong - it was obvious that he had never even been to some of the places he wanted us to hunt. Once when we got back to his truck early because the hunt was a lot shorter then he told us, we found him asleep in the cab. The area we hunted was all public land, so there were always other hunters around - one time when Bob did go out with us, he had a shouting match just before first light with some other hunters who came in on horseback behind us. I compared notes with the others in our camp and everyone had similar experiences of being dropped off and picked up later. With the guides doing other personal stuff while the hunters were in the field. Bob's a nice guy, but this trip was definiately not worth the money or time.

Another great hunt! I took my wife with me this year for her 1st mule deer hunt. She wanted a non-typical, something different. (Ya Right) Anyway the weather was warm, 60's on Thanksgiving week, who would expect. We were seeing deer but not the big ones. On the second day in the morning we spotted my wife's deer, unfortunately the deer had different thoughts. He was gone. We hunted for him high and low the rest of the morning hoping not to chase him. So that afternoon went to another area. The next morning my wife woke up and said, let's go look for the deer. Terry and I looked at each other and grinned. I will tell you though my wife was born with a horseshoe implanted where the sun does not shine. So we go back to the area, and we are not 200 yards from where we saw the deer the morning before and there he stands, broadside, in a patch of pines. 1-shot, 225yds Thompson Center 25-06. Deer down. We get up to this deer, and he is defianetly non-typical. a 30in tall, still in velvet mule deer stag. The neatest deer, I have ever seen. Not bad for her 1st deer. Mine was not as easy, 3 hours left in the hunt, and I would go home empty, instead of shooting a last day so-so deer. Our luck with the weather changed the last morning of the hunt though. Started seeing alot of deer movement w/ cold front moving in. We did alot of driving, walking, climbing, looking for big daddy. As we turned a corner, going up the side of a mountain, my wife yells, that deer is huge. There he was a heavy, heavy 27 1/2in 5x4, chasing a doe. He never saw us, we stalked him over 3 valleys and got within 50 yards, didn't need to be that close, but when we crested the last hill, there he stood w/ 4 does. Another great deer and great time with Terry. This man knows his land, and owns and leases alot of it. He can see deer a mile away, and I am not exaggerating. If you want a big mulie, and have patience, they are there. You have to have patience, to shoot the big mulies. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. He also has a ton of antelope, and if your lucky enough to draw a tag, some great elk. Thanks again Terry

I hunted with otter creek outfitters during the peak of the rut. Saw a ton of deer most 5x5's. Not the biggest deer I've ever seen but nice quality deer. It was one of the worse years for rainfall you can imagine. .4inches of rain during peak growing months. Jim and cindy are great folks really make you feel at home. Jim was my guide and put me on a nice mulie on the second day. He answered all my questions and reaaly gave me the choice to shot or wait for a differnt deer. No pressure to end the hunt. My partners guide misjudged a deer and he ended up taking a small deer only bad part of the trip. I guess it happens. Would love to try again when the drought is over and they really grow big.

Please do your research before spending this type of money on a hunt. Check references and talk to as many people as you can. This Outfitter boasts, and does not deliver on what is told to clients. Does not treat hunters in camp as a customer. You will be extremely lucky to spot anything besides other outfitters and their hunters excessively blowing bugle calls to try to impress. Tim Reishus would set me on a ridge and leave telling me that he needed to glass an area. After being left alone for hours went to look for him and found him sleeping on two occasions! There is so much more. Very few good points about the hunt with this outfitter. This is all about money to this outfitter, and not about delivering a quality hunt to his client.

Before the hunt even started my son and I was supposed to go together for his graduation present from me to him. Opening day on a Montana back country Elk hunt. Great gift I thought. I sent a deposit for the both of us but then my son broke his leg and could not attend so the main guide moved up someone from the previous week to take his spot. My hunt started by the main guide was two hours late in picking us up to go to camp. We ride horses for four hours only to show up to camp and the camp is completely in shambles. We had to help in re-doing camp in a snow storm. Did not even get any dinner that night because of the condition of camp. That night it dropped to about 0 degrees F and none of the wood in camp would light. I thought I had frost bite. I placed all my big clothes on and started running in camp to warm up. My toes were actually stuck together. After two days of only seeing a squirrel alive then main guide should have known that the Elk had moved out, even our guide thought we should not be there. On the 4th day we got up to a snow storm and got on our horses to travel for about two hours, the main guide then made a fire to warm up and dry off and also to wait for the storm to slow down. When we decided to finally hunt the decision was made to drive Elk. I opted to take the high road, one to sit, one to take the middle and the last to take middle. Anyway I walked in knee deep snow for about 4 hours and no one saw anything. I physically could not walk much more and I am in shape. I mean at home I run three days a week, play sports three days a week, lift weights two days a week, etc. We got on our horses to go back to camp and when I arrived back at camp, I got off my horse and all of a sudden I completely cramped up from my waist down. I had to do so serious stretching to be able to walk. When I did I got into my tent and when I went to hang up something I got so dizzy that I fell down, I could not even close my eyes because everything was still spinning. I started to vomit and also had tunnel vision. My tent mate kept the fire going all night and then kept checking on me. The main guide did check on me a couple of times. I vomited only once more. No one knew what it was. I mean this has never happened to me and I was actually going to go to the emergency room when I got down if it kept happening. During this time, the main guide used his cell phone to call a ranch that he was leasing to make arrangements to take the next week’s hunters to this ranch because there were no animals up here. When he got off the phone my tent mate and I asked about this ranch and the guide stated that he leases this ranch so the hunt is a little more money but just about guaranteed to get at least a cow. We asked how much it would cost us to go to this ranch and get a cow. The guide stated $100 extra so we both stated that if I could go then we would pay it. We stated that we would leave a day early and go to this ranch that is if I could make it there. I still felt a little weird because he did not charge the next group of hunters any more money then what we paid for a camp hunt. I got up the next day and felt good enough to get down and by that time everyone in camp was ready to leave a day early. My tent mate decided that he did not want to go to the ranch but I really wanted to. We got down to the trucks and before I left I asked the guide what should I do to go to the ranch, he stated to give him a little bit of time and then to call him. I told him that I did have a ranch to go to but that I would rent a truck and get a hotel instead of going to the ranch this way I can get to the ranch quicker. The rental was expensive and the hotel was not cheap either. Anyway I gave him an extra hour and then started to call. I left him three messages on his cell and two messages at his home. The last one would have been at 9:30 pm. I never heard from him at all until about two days later, when I was at the next ranch hunting Mule Deer and Antelope, and then when I did talk to him he was going to charge me another full priced hunt instead of the $100 that he agreed to. UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!So not only did I not see any Elk, I also got frost bite, had to set up my own camp, rented a truck and a hotel for nothing, got lied to about being able to shoot a cow on a private ranch for a $100 dollars but instead going to be charged a full hunt, and the worst thing is that I had must of had altitude sickness, based on my research when I got home, which I guess I could of died form. The next symptom for altitude sickness after the tunnel vision and vomiting is brain swelling and death. Someone should definitely know how to diagnose this and be ready for treatment ASAP. Everyone knows that you can not expect top see an Elk let alone shoot one but having a guide set up arrangements for the next group of hunters at a private ranch just sucked. Why did he not take us there after the second day?? Why lie to me about the hundred dollars?? I hope that my son's broken leg had nothing to do with it, like maybe a revenge thing. I am actually a fishing guide back home and I would not stay in an area if the fish were not biting let alone call and make plans for the next group at another really good stocked spot for the next day. Give me a break. Looking back now I am glad my son could not attend because if he had he would probably never go again.

When I arrived, there was no room in camp so I was forced to stay in a hotel, at my expense, for the first night. After that, I was able to stay on a cot in the office (not the bunkhouse). There were too many hunters in camp. Overall the guides were inexperienced and unorganized, but the guide I had was very good. There must have been 15-25 hunters in camp at any one time. The area we were hunting did not support that many hunters, let alone the number of hunters from the other outfitter service hunting the same land. Too many hunters, lack of organization, preferential treatment to certain hunters.... the list goes on and on. I would NEVER hunt with this outfitter again.

If you are thinking about going to Hidden Valley for a Combo Hunt my husband and I wouldn't recommend it. Tracey promised us a lot on the phone and once we showed up it was a completely different story. Also our guide informed us that we were being taken where the deer weren't the best because we didn't offer more money for the bigger bucks. My husband and I were under the impression that Tracey gave us that we were going to be hunting nice bucks. Also when Tracey showed up at the camp he didn't really talk to the hunters that were there unless you got a deer and he wanted a picture of them for his collection, his brother does all of the work for him. Please feel free to contact before you would book a hunt with them, we hate to see you loss a lot of money and not be happy with the outfitter we had to learn the hard way. Now, we are going to go on another hunt but we are asking the outfitter all of the questions and make sure that we have them in writing so this doesn't happen to us again and hopefully it won't.

I was able to draw a limited mule deer tag (only 50 given in the zone) in the area of Upper Canyon Outfitter's camp. After filling my elk tag, Donna helped me utilize my mule deer tag based upon her knowledge of the area. We started the morning by staking out an area were we had seen a thophy buck the night before. Just as she said, the buck showed up between 7 and 8 am and I ended up missing a 125 yard shot. After a trip to the shooting range, I discovered my scope had been bumped and we had to resighted the gun in. Then after an early lunch, we drove to and area and she spotted a large buck about a mile up the gulch. After a two to three hour stalk up to the top of the gulch, I missed an even bigger buck at 350 yards. After all this we ended the day by glassing a valley and just before dark, I filled my tag with a 185+ point mule deer buck at 175 yards. I would not have be able to complete this great day without the help of Donna McDonald and Upper Canyon Outfitters

This was a celebration hunt for my son and myself as we both had just beaten cancer. We met Travis at Iowa Deer Classic. He seemed ok, now I see he is SLICK.Travis promised us liscenced experienced guides . Our guide was also from Iowa and had only hunted Elk one week before he guided us and he was a guide that week even though he had never Elk hunted himself and never killed an Elk. He had never been there before and didn't know where we were most of time. On fifth day I ask the "guide" to take us back to camp and he blew up and left us on a mountain top 5 miles from camp. We got lost and I became dehydrated. Back at camp the "guide" harrased us as soon as we found our way back. He was drunk and had a 44 mag on his shoulder holster. WE had it out verbally. I had to stay in my tent and could not even go to cook tent! 2 more days no guide! Lots of drinking, lots of drunks daily. Travis had an aqaintence fill in for one guide and he took his hunters by horseback away and they both killed elk, he was the only experienced guide in camp and he wasn't really a guide, but nice guy. other "guides" were young. E-mail me and I'll tell you even more bad things, lots of them. Saw NO game, ten people in camp, all but two saw no game. Travis ripped me off, and he is a liar plain and simple. Also charged us $300 to pick us up at motel and return us, trip back we had to drive their old truck ourselves and leave for the sucker. I'm going to write Orvis as they are "approved" by Orvis. Maybe Orvis sucks too!

My hunt took place during the rut 2005. I have hunted out west since 1987. I am always looking for the best place. Well I have finally found it. I was treated like one of the family. I saw 5-10 quality bucks a day. I ended up taking a 28in inside spread 4x5. I saw a lot of super bucks the 5 days I was there. My guide was the owner Terry, and by far the best guide I have ever seen. This guy could see deer at a 1/2 mile and that is no exaggeration. Everything about this operation is A+++++. If you could be lucky enough to draw a elk tag for rifle, I saw some nice elk. Also, the bird hunting, turkey, pheasant, and grouse is outstanding. Oh, I am already booked for next year. Do not hesitate to contact me.

This is a true wilderness pack-in hunt. The country is very rugged (Scapegoat Wilderness). You really should be in good physical shape for this hunt. I was there for the first week of the second rifle season. The weather was unseasonably warm and I believe effected game movement but we still seen some deer & elk most days, including a trophy mule deer and a few nice bulls. I was fortunate enough to take a beautiful 6x6 bull elk.

Animals Hunted: Elk, Whitetail deer

This was my first Elk hunt, but I lucked out when I got Jeff as my guide. Quiet, but serious, and openly honest about our chances. I told him I was not interested in a cow or rag horn, but wanted at least a respectable 5 point or better. Our fist morning he took me on a pace that was challenging, but considerate of my flat lander lungs. Good thing too, because we got to where he wanted to glass from, and spotted a herd of Elk in about 5 minutes. They were on the move, heading over the next ridge, but we formulated a plan, and with some effort caught up to them, as they began to bed down. We worked out a plan that got me into a comfortable range,(under 300 yds), and I killed the biggest bull in the herd of @ 50 animals. Less then two hours of hunting. The packer did a great job of handling the meat, after Jeff's expert caping and quartering. And I'm fussy about my meat. Jeff directed me to a meat cutter that processed my meat exactly as I ordered, for a very reasonable price. That night over dinner, Jeff and his brother Corey discussed where I should look for a whitetail. Corey had already killed a respectable 9 point in his spare time, and had a spot in mind that I should go to. The next afternoon, Jeff took me to that area, and explained the lay of the land, and described the deer movement. I elected to hunt by myself, but with the knowledge shared by Corey and Jeff, within an hour I passed up an 8 point buck, and then killed a decent 10 pointer. Filled both my tags in about 3 hours of hunting, with what turned out to be the best animals of the week. Others in camp had opportunities for better animals, but couldn't make the shot. I chose not to have either animal mounted, but Jeff is an accomplished Taxidermist, and boiled and cleaned the skulls for me, so that I took them home all processed, ready for display. Again, for what I considered cheap money compared to my local Taxidermists. Jeff made me not just a part of the decision making process, but at times left it totally up to me. I felt like I hunted, and not like someone held my hand. But I got the animals I wanted, some excellent meat, well cared for trophies, and oh yes, some great photos. A hunt I'll never forget. Thanks Jeff, Corey, and Jeryl!

My wife and I went for a combo hunt. The problem was we got antelope tags but we didn't hunt them. The outfitter informed us when we arrived that we need to pay him more money if we wanted to hunt antelope. Tracey also made sure that where we hunted there was no antelope for us to see and try to get. Tracey made a lot of promises over the phone but didn't hold up to any of them. We even said something to our guide about it and he said that the outfitter sells what you want to hear. The mule deer that we got on our last day they are not the biggest in the world. We were also informed by the guide that if you pay him a extra money he puts you in better places. We will never go back to hunt with Hidden Valley. There was other problems that happened and too many to mention here. Please feel free to contact us, we don't want this to happen to anyone else when you put a lot of time, money and effort into booking one of these hunts.

This was my first hunt with WW and had a great time. Looking forward to going back again. WW is a professionally run operation by a great bunch of people. I hunted with Jeff Rennaker and had great time. His knowledge of the area and game is outstanding. He cooperates very well with his brother Cory, who is also a guide to find and keep you on game. We saw elk and deer every day. I took a nice 6x6 elk on the last mourning of the hunt (the biggest for the year in the western camp) and passed on several nice whitetails. My hunting partner Joe missed a huge whitetail and then took a respectable 4x4 the same afternoon. We shared alot of laughs with Jeff while in the field and made a great friend. Looking forward to going back and doing a archery elk hunt with Jeff and WW Outfitters.

My son took a real nice mulie. I shot a nice 5x5 elk on the last day of the hunt. The elk ranged from 6x7 to a 3x3. None monsters but nice animals. Several great mulies and whitetail. Went the week before Thanksgiving and the deer were in rut. Outfitter recommends coming during archery or first 2 weeks of rifle to get a chance at the really big boys. However the deer are harder to get that early. Very hard country to hunt. Very steep terrain. Mostly glassin clearcuts. Very good outfit. Everyone very nice and knowledgeable. We hope to get back with them.

In november 2005 we hunted with powder river outfitters for our 5th time and it was as good as it always is. Nine of us went and we all killed by our 3rd day of the hunt. We killed two mule deer, 155 and 163,and seven whitetails,127,130,134,125,148,152,138.During our 5 years there we have seen 180 to 200 class mule deer and whitetails to 175. Of course they are not everywhere but you will see unbelievable numbers of nice deer. You are hunting out of trailers in bunk beds with all necessary conviences. We go on one to three hunts per year and this always ends up being our favorite.

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule Deer/Whitetail

I hunted with WW in November 2005 in their western camp. There were 10 hunters in camp, there were 3 elk and 3 deer taken. 1 Mule Deer and 2 Whitetails. I have no real complaints about the hunt, the accomadations and food were good, the guides knew where the animals were and worked hard to get you an animal. The terrain is pretty rugged, being in shape is important, I was pretty winded some days. Everyone one in camp seen a number of animals both deer and elk but for the most part the quality of animals in this area isn't that great. There are some big ones but they're few and far between. Elk need a brow tine to be legal, I believe there were less than 10 legal elk seen all week by all hunters, the guides suggest shooting the first legal bull you see. If you're lucky enough to draw in the limited Mule Deer area, you'll shoot the buck of a lifetime, I seen great bucks every day and even some B&C's while hunting for elk. However, the odds of drawing are slim, in the other mule deer area, licenses guaranteed, there's alot of hunting pressure and very few nice bucks. We did get one nice buck in camp from there but again the guides suggest shooting any mule deer buck you see. The area really isn't known for its whitetail, there are alot of numbers, but again not much quality. Again, talking to the guides, they say that when some of the higher mountains get alot of snow, some bigger elk will migrate into the area, but it's just luck when that happens. There were some Elk migrating in while we were there but not in any big numbers, but knowone can control the weather. Overall, if you're looking for a good hunt for a pretty decent price and you're not to picky, I would recommend this outfitter. However, if you looking for trophy animals it's probably not the best place. They said in their eastern area, where it's mostly bowhunting, there are really large elk, but the price is quite a bit more.

Let me start by saying, I have been going out west since 1987. I love hunting Mule Deer. After all these years I have found the place to hunt and the guy to go with. I debated whether to put this on here because I didn't know if I wanted to share this with anyone. But after reading and having been on crappy hunts, I decided to go ahead and put this on. Terry owns and leases so much prime property in the 5 days you are there you could never touch it all. If you can control yourself and be patient, you can have the chance of shooting a big mulie. The quality of deer in this area is unbelievable. Around every mountain, you do not no what to expect. I took a 28in wide 4x5 with brow tines (11 pointer). I took my deer the second day of a five day hunt. The thing that impressed me besides the property and quality Deer, was after I shot my deer, Terry was there to Turkey, pheasant, and coyote hunt. We hunted until the time I left. This is a class operation with a real chance at taking a real trophy Mule Deer. If you are tired of wasting your money call me and I will get you in contact with Terry. The only thing is, he only takes so many hunters a year and most clients are repeats. This my first year, but there will be many more. And yes I took, a turkey, coyote and pheasant. GREAT HUNT all around.

Had high expectations of seeing quality game and lot's of it. Tagged a decent muley buck but did not see an elk, which is why we were there predominantly. Great cook and camp manager. Outfitter had a guide quit at last minute and my buddy and I were stuck with the 'new guy'. We hunted the wilderness camp and this was only his second week. Had quality stock [horses/mules]. Guide did not live up to promises in brochure by properly taking care of our tagged deer. Guide complained about packing it back to camp then demanded our help to skin/clean. This was by far the dirtiest animal I have tagged by the time all was said and done. Overall not the experience we were after as a result.

He was the largest of SEVEN bucks chasing a hot doe. All of the hunters in camp tagged out with nice muleys, with the exception of one fellow who wounded a big one the evening I left camp. He was going to return with his guide the next day to try to retrieve it. The guides (Donnie and Bubba)are very knowledgeable and the ranches that Tracy leases are the best in that part of Montana. Seven of us hunted with 7-V ranch for a mule deer hunt in November 2003. We saw large numbers of deer and elk every day and we all got a nice mule deer on the trip The racks ranged from 22" - 26". Food was great with a hot breakfast and supper each day. The cooks packed us adequate and filling lunches every day. They used new pickups to transport us from the lodge to our hunting areas each time. We hunted hard all day, every day until we all had our buck by the third day of our four day hunt. The guides were great - they knew the ranch like the backs of their hands. They worked hard to get us all a good deer, but they did not pressure us to take an animal that we didn't want. They offer hunts for deer and antelope (combo hunts when the seasons overlap), elk (rifle permits are almost impossible in this zone but bow permits are over the counter), upland birds and turkey as well as prairie dogs. They also have a small lake for rainbow trout fishing. There are no additional fees for extra animals taken on combo hunts.

We hunted opening week of Elk in the Beautiful Bob Marshall Wilderness. We horsebacked deep into the Bob Marshall, a 7 hour horseback ride, and stayed in a tent camp.(Hunt date, Sept.15,2005 to 9/21/2005). Ten hunters, 5 guides, hunted daylight until dusk for 6 days. The guides bugeled and cow called throughout the day.We walked/hunted 7 to 15 miles per day.The country was rugged & mountianous. Some hunters stayed in on some days becaus of numerous blisters on their feet. And aching ankles, although all were in great shape and none were smokers. A total of 5 cows were sighted and 1 small Bull 120 yrds with no shot possible. When the hunt was over we attempted to discuss our dissapointment with outfitter Travis Barker, He basically said," too bad,it's fair chase, and walked away. All hunters were in disbelief at his response. I would reccomend this outfitter to nobody. He shouldn't even be in the business! Jeff Starkey 6449 Mccandlish Grand Blanc, MI 48439

Had big bull and deer action just about everyday. And the last half of the week was 95+out. Almost had a shot on two three fifty class bulls. Don't believe a word of the negative review's. This guy has a first class operation with plenty of animals. I hunted and shot Elk in unit 12 Colorado for years and never seen anything like at Randy's place. (Know wonder Chuck Adams took the last two world record's out of the same area!). The guy has sniper like tree stand set up's and invisable ground blind's. I had plenty of action but went there for one reason. To shoot a giant, and almost did. One guy in camp shot a solid 340 and another fellow choked on a five by. One of the other guy's knicked a absolute brute. If your after four hundred class bulls at a reasonable price forget NM/AZ the Bull Mountains of Montana has them. That's why I'm going back! I almost arrowed one. Randy's has a ton of property and don't let those guy's fool you on his public ground's either that's awesome property to. Limited access make's it public/private. If you spoke with these guy's that did not like Musselshell. You'll find that they compare it to penned hunt's sorry boy's that's not hunting. If your looking for the best kept big bull honey whole there is, Randy, sitting in the middle of it. Make know mistake about it these are wild animal's you have to hunt for them. IT IS NOT AN EASY HUNT WETHER YOU GO GUIDED OR UNGUIDED. YOU WILL DO ALOT OF WALKING TO GET TO THOSE ELK ONCE YOU FIND THEM.YOUR GUIDES WILL DO THE BEST THEY CAN ,YOU CAN COUNT ON THAT.YOU WON'T FIND A NICER BUNCH OF PEOPLE WETHER IT IS IN CAMP IN THE MOUNTAINS OR THE KITCHEN. I WILL BE GOING BACK THIS FALL 2005 AGAIN.I HOPE I GET A NICE ELK OR MULEY BUT THE ONE THING I DO KNOW IS THAT I WILL HAVE A GOOD TIME EVEN IF ITS SITTING IN THE DINING ROOM TALKING WITH OLD FRIENDS.I RECCOMEND THIS CAMP HIGHLY IF YOU LIKE YOU CAN CALL ME AT 203-7432591 ASK FOR TONY

Randy either paid his references to lie about his operation or he had lost his good leases after they hunted with him. This was supposed to be a 90% shot success on trophy bulls for the past five years. Of the six hunters in camp only four cow elk were seen on his leases. The hunters were driven up to a tree stand(at a water tank) at 5:00 each morning and left until noon when the guide drove back up to the stand and took you to camp. These stands were for the most part located in wide open fields. We were taken back to a stand about 4:00 and left until after dark. The end results were: NO ELK WERE SHOT, NO ELK WERE SHOT AT, ALL SIX HUNTERS(FOUR OF US HAD ARCHERY HUNTED FOR ELK FOR SEVERAL YEARS) VOWED TO NEVER HUNT WITH HIM AGAIN. The group who came in next had an even worse expericnce than we did, they went to the trouble of contacting us to tell us about their experience.
