I went out for the first week of the 2004 season with eight of my friends and had a wonderful time. The Williams family was great, and my guide Jeff was outstanding.Jeff and his brother Corey are both excepttional pepole and guides.Their skill for finding elk is amazing,I can not of asked for two better guys to be guided by.Jeff and Corey are very straghit forward about everything from the quality and quantiy of elk we would see, plus what is ok to do and what is not.The two of them are no bullshit guys. They provided good company on our days out there in search for elk and mule deer.Everything about my trip was great, the food, people, the packer, meat cutters and once again my guide and his brother Corey.I have talked with other outfitters at local sportsman shows and have yet to find one as honest as WW Outfitters, some other outfitters claim you do not have to pay for a hunt if you don t take anything home.Trick is if you do there is a trophy fee tacked on to it.Such is not the case with WW Outfitters. I am already planning another trip with them and my only request is that i have Jeff or Corey as my guide. There is no better outfitter as honest as WW Outfitters.

I had an excellent week. The accommodations wereexcellent.Outstanding showers and bunk house.I found the familly to be friendly, warm and helpfull. Our guide Jeff R.,was outstanding.Such a mature and professional individual. Jeff is a no bullshit guy. My advise is to listen and pay attention when he speaks. The packing out of the bull was superb. The butcher shop was excellent. This all happened so well because we listened to Jeff.

This was my first archery bull hunt. My father, brother and I were guided by Jeff and Corey. We were in to bulls every day. They put us in the where we needed to be. My brother and I both arrowed the same bull, the only one we killed, but we had 4 excellent chances to shoot at bulls. If I am able to get back to Montana on a bull hunt, these two guides and this Outfitter are who I will use. This was my first archery kill. Excellent time.

Outfitter Review: Musselshell Outfitters - Montana

Outfitter / Owner: Randy Higgins

Hunter: DeWayne Walling

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

They advertise 25"-28" Mule deer are average. Out of 6 hunters, one deer was 26". Mine was second at 23", everyone else was well below that. We all shot the biggest deer we saw. The so called experienced guides consisted of 2 months of pre-season walking around the property observing the game. Two of the three "guides" had never hunted Mule deer before. They were all from the midwest looking for an adventure in the west. We later found out the reason for the guides pressuring us to shoot the first 4 point we saw, they had a contest going between them to see who could tag out their hunter first. Randy advertised you could Turkey hunt after you tag out. When I ask to go turkey hunting, he said he didn't really have a place, but I could go walk around on some state land and see if I could find one. I did not see any Elk nor any Elk sign, so I ask the guides how was Elk Season. They laughed and said out of 32 hunters, one guy got a shot. Randy was late picking me up and the motel in Billings. When he did get there, we stopped at Walmart where he said if I want anything to drink beside water or cool-aid, I needed to buy it myself. Two of our hunters were there for Whitetail. They were furious upon arriving at camp to find out that Randy lost the lease on his Whitetail ranch way back in the summer. Thing is, he failed to call and tell them. If you are interested in shooting a mule deer and don't care if it's smaller than some of our South Texas Whitetail, then go ahead a book with them. But if you want one in the 25"-28" range, go elsewhere.

I do alot of hunting in my home state as well as some other surrounding states. I live in Missouri and have hunted since I was 12. I found my hunt with Musselshell Outfitters to be alot of fun, and I missed a truly big bull at about 35 yards. I sat on water holes alot and I saw alot of game. I heard elk bugling almost nonstop from 6 am to 10 am. I did not see any of the problems that some of the others speak of. If I go back to hunt this fall and don't get a shot, I will still be happy. I know how elk travel so just hope to get in front of one, and give it my best. One thing is for sure, you can't hunt this outfitters area and see no game. We almost hit deer or elk with the truck every morning on the way to the ranch. I also met a local in town while I was hunting with Musselshell. He was mad because he said "Higgens has all the good places leased up" I didn't say anything at that time, but now I think it is very ironic with some of the negative reports on here.

Outfitter Review: Musselshell Outfitters - Montana

Outfitter / Owner: Randy Higgens

Hunter: Toby Dellamano

Animals Hunted: Elk

I hunted elk with Musselshell Outfitters the fall of September 04. I would like to start this report off first by telling you something about me. I am an avid bow hunter and have been very successful over the last 25 years. I have hunted and harvest animals all across the US, Canada, and Alaska. I have won several archery tournaments and bugling awards. Two years ago I became the youngest bow hunter to take the BIG 8 in Colorado. I take great pride in my sport, lifestyle, and fair chase! I don’t post this to brag or boast only to give myself credibility for what I am going to report.I have hunted and pursued elk all my life. However, the vast majority of the bulls we chase in Colorado are not that big. That is why I contacted Musselshell outfitters. Musselshell outfitters told me about 350 P&Y class bulls running around their land and being harvested every year with a 100% shooting opportunity. They even told me a 400+ class bull was shot just across the road. I told them I was an experienced archer and elk hunter and I was looking for a bull larger than 320 P&Y. They said their guides were experienced elk hunters, callers, and archers themselves. That was far from the truth. The guides calling ability was POOR at best, they were not archers and 2 of them didn’t even know the property boundaries very well or the lay of the land. At the beginning of the hunt, Musselshell started off with a group meeting stating that the best way to get an elk was to be patient and sit a water hole. Which I was totally willing to do to get a big bull. The first morning we started off trying to bugle a bull in, we following the heard about 1 mile as we walked along the fence just hoping we could get one to jump over. About 9am the guide took us over to the water hole and showed us the tree stand. We walked around the water hole and saw no track, I asked the guide, “did anybody sit this stand in the first group of archers?” He said, “Yea, pretty much everyday, but I think he only saw a doe and fawn.” We then went to look at other water holes, no track, no track, cattle tracks, lots of cattle at the tanks, lots of stock tanks on one property. When we asked the guide and Randy what made them think we should sit on one of the 6 stock tanks contained in less then 1 mile, they said “they got to drink somewhere!” Which is true, but they weren’t drinking on Musselshell’s property… the lack of tracks proves it! This was true on ALL of their properties; every stock tank we went to either had no tracks or 1 or 2 week old tracks. At which time I opted not to sit a water hole for endless hours. Four other archers in my camp sat water holes the entire time and every time they came back to camp they had their heads down, “no elk, no deer, just birds and lots of cattle.” “I’ve never been on a guide hunt with so little game around” While we were at the different water holes they showed the tree stands. They were not only in poor condition but dangerous! They used old dead branch for steps and access in and out of the stand was contorted and difficult. When I mentioned this to the other hunters in camp they would say “you should have seen mine, talk about dangerous!” They even had a Double Bull Bind, which was falling apart. The guide gave us the blind and said “this is the best one we’ve got” and 2 of the hubs were not working, the plastic nipples were broken off and we had to use our own rope to get it to work. Musselshell told us that they had aprox. 50,000 acres of leased property, what they didn’t tell us was less then half ever had an elk on it. A large majority of their property was burnt land with nothing growing on it, no trees, no grass, nothing. The rest of it was poorly grassed and over grazed by the cattle rancher. It seamed like every property they took us to we hunted the trees running right next to the fence. Another major problem is that other ranches in the area are planting elk feed and water tanks to keep the elk on their properties. We ran into a man from Texas in Roundup while we were eating lunch (lunch was at our cost, Musselshell provided ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo they never put in the frig) and he told us he was leasing up all the land he could (about 30K acres so far) and told us about all the great feed and water they had put on their land and they have elk all over. Musselshell’s guide showed us the Texan’s property and told us how it was getting to be a problem getting the elk to come off that property. The best pieces of property that Musselshell leased was PUBLIC, with other hunters on it! They said we didn’t have to hunt the public land, but when that’s the best of the worst what do you do?Yes we did see some big bulls, but they were across the fence on property we couldn't hunt. Musselshell even told us that if you shoot a bull and he goes across the fence we can’t get them…Don’t even try! We’ve lost bulls that way before, yet we hunted fences everyday just hoping a bull would cross. Nobody in my camp had a shot opportunity on any elk, bull or cow! Musselshell had another group of hunters the same week as us at a different location and they told us only 1 shot was taken, a young boy had hit a 5 point bull but they couldn’t find it. The week before us they shot one 5 point bull the last night. Musselshell’s web site still states: “Overall opportunity for bowhunters with us is about 95%. We very rarely have a bowhunter who does not have an opportunity. An opportunity is any time you are 40 yards or less from the desired game while in the field hunting… We use bugles and cow calls to bring them in close. We occasionally use stands and blinds. We also use natural wallows and food sources to our advantage. We are consistently producing 100% opportunity for our elk hunting guests. Many guests have had multiple shot opportunities at 300"+ bulls!” -- These claims are incorrect and yet he still promotes and publishes these as facts!I feel I was mislead and lied to by Musselshell Outfitters and I will gladly provide you names and numbers from the other 6 hunters in my camp that will fully substantiate my report. I know there are hunters from the group before us and the group after us, and some of those hunters were antelope hunters. (They sat antelope water holes for hours and days on end, yet never had antelope come in). There were hunters both antelope and elk hunters that did everything Musselshell asked them to do, they sat water holes for hours and days on end never seeing anything. The reason I am posting this is for my fellow archer. I have met some terrific people though bow hunting and some life long friends. I have purchased items from other Bowhunters off the Internet with the PROMISE of I’ll send you the check the same time you send me the item. If I only knew this information 1 year ago I could have made a wise choice. As I read through other past hunters reports on Musselshell Outfitters I have to ask myself, ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME OUTFITTER????? I’ll leave you with that thought, and a challenge, GIVE Musselshell your $4000+ dollars and he’ll prove to you that I am correct. Toby Dellamano

I've hunted with Mike eight times and can never wait to go back. Has his own ranch and a couple of leases. The Mule Deer hunting is fantastic. This year I killed a 29" 5x5. I've killed several 15" antelope and have always filled my tags. You will have to pass several quality bucks to shoot a real trophy.

This was my second hunt with Paul. The first was good and I wanted to bring friends back with me. Our impression: Paul is streched to thin and over comments. WHEN pressed he will work with you but you lose days of hunting doing it. I had other friends that were told they would have a ranch and no one else could\would hunt it. When they got there the guide told him a writer and his son had hunted it hard the week before. I would never suggest anyone hunt with Paul again.Fred Gill

I have been fortunate enough to be a guest on the 5E for the past 3 seasons.I have hunted hard the back country of Montana for 14 years and have never had the opportunity on bulls like I have hunting on the 5E. The bulls are very callable and Abe and Dave have become experts at calling them in. I had many shot opportunities and was able to harvest 2 smaller 6 points in these past years. The ranch holds some true trophies, 340 plus herd bulls have been common each year with a couple that I can only imagine what they might have scored. In the morning just before light you would step out on the deck to hear sometimes 8-10 different bulls bugling. I would recommend this hunt to anyone searching for either a first time bull or a chance at a true Montana trophy. I have hunted with Musselshell Outfitters several years. Great people, great operation. I have always seen good animals and had a great time. Bow hunting big elk is my passion, and that is why I hunt with Musselshell Outfitters. I dont hunt in canned hunt areas or fenced in African concessions. I also listen to my guide when I travel to hunt. Too many easterners are going west for the first time to hunt elk, then talking like they know more than the guide!!! You have to HUNT and enjoy being in the woods to be a true bowhunter. Its not for everyone.

I have hunted this area with this outfitter many times, and I know the quality of game and of the operation. It has always been very consistent. I can not believe some of the whining and sniveling about this outfitter and area. If you didn't see any game in this outfitters areas, you are either blind, or you might as well give it up. It sounds like the whiners didn't kill an elk and got mad. Go to a pen and shoot your bull. Hunting wild elk with bow is only for true hunters. If you want to hunt big bulls with a bow Musselshell Outfitters would be very hard to beat. I know of several bulls over 400 inch class that have been taken in his area. You won't take one every time, you gotta be a true hunter in it for the long run and your opportunities will come if you actually hunt hard and work with your guide. I am from New York,(up state) and when I go to Montana I listen to my guide and do what he recommends. I see that many easterners go west and think they know more than their guide, after one day of hunting. They then whine after the hunt because everything was bad. I bet the anti-hunters love that too, because your playing right into what they say we are.

Outfitter / Owner: Russ/Karen Kipp

Hunter: Clark Linn

Animals Hunted: ELK - Bow

I hunted with Russ in 2004. I use a recurve so I needed to be close. 25 yds max. We got close to some nice bulls but just out of range. This is a lodge hunt and has all the comforts of a 5 star resort. The hunting is good. I saw bulls everyday. Russ has several ranches leased plus access to public land that allowed for lots of hunting area and no pressure from other hunters. I did not kill an elk on this trip but that really didn't matter. I had a great time. My wife went along and relaxed and toured the country while we hunted. If you are looking for a tough back country hunt then this is not it. If you want a good hunt with a good chance at a good bull and outstanding accomidations and food then give them a try.

I hunted with a group of 6 and none of us got a shot.3 never saw a bull. Was told that we would be hunting private property when in fact most of the time we hunted public land. 4 of us had hunters walk right by us. This hunt is NOT as advertised. Randy had 3 guides 2 of which were terrible. No experience as a bow guide. One of the guides was only in camp 3 weeks before we got there. Randy was supposed to be a guide and when we got in camp things changed. It was clear that the elk was not on the property that we could hunt.We would hear elk, but they were always on the other side of the fence. Everywhere we went there was a fence close by that we could not cross. 2 in our group saw some nice bulls but they were on the other side of the fence. They hunted 50 yards from the fence for the whole trip just hoping that one would cross. I don't believe Randy has all the property that he advertises, because it was obvious that all the elk were pushed off the property we had to hunt.We planned this hunt for 2 years and all I can say is that we feel robbed.I think Randy went 4 elk for 30 hunters in 2004.

Outfitter misrepresented his hunt. No archer in the first three seasons even saw one of the quality elk that he stated that "virtually everyone has shooting opportunities to take". This would be for 310+ animals. Only animal of this quality seen on their properties was when one hoped a fence AFTER shooting hours. Treestands were DANGEROUS. Used dead branches as steps. Some were inverted. Didn't even know where their safety belts were. Some of the double bull blinds had rods hanging out. Stay away from this outfitter. We have filed a complaint and several others have also. Now found out that he was already under probation for other violations.

The other hunters, most hunted there befor, were also very nice. This was truely a wonderful experience. But then came the hunt. The hunt turned out to be a selection process; which buck do I want. I passed up countless 'shooter' bucks and on the last day took a good Missouri Breaks Deer. http://www.kiblercharterfishing.com/huntingphotos/huntgallery80.html follow this link for picture. Also, my guide Clint; what an 'eagle eye'. This guy didn't miss anything that moved. If I would have had the fortune to draw an Elk tag for this area I would be in possession of a record book Elk. We saw several huge bulls. I think the one 6x7 we saw was the same size as our truck. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Well this is my third hunt with Musselshell and the first for my son. We not only seen nice mule deer, but good herds of elk, antelope 30 to 40 at a time and wild turkeys. The food was Excellant. My son got the first buck the first day. Our guide Randy did a great job of getting him a good shot, also his first buck, boy will it be hard to top. I also shot a good four point the last day of our hunt after passing on several. I have been here for the third time and can't imagine that you could hunt here and not see any animals. But after all some peaple may forget this is hunting and even though you have a guide he can only put you in a good area. Maybe this is the reason high fence operation are becoming so popular. But for those of you that would like a good hunt with good peaple I would highly recomend musselshell outfitters.Thank you, Randy and Jenifer for another great hunt.Darrell and Bryce Brown

FIRST CLASS is the only way I can describe it. The camp is nice, the guides great hunters, and the cook is in a class of her own. Mr. Higgins is an honest, upfront, hard working outfitter. The material and information provided was accurate, concise, and easily understood. The only surprise was that the camp, people, and hunting area's were even nicer/better than expected! The bottom line is that I had a terrific hunt. Seeing new animals, walking new terrain, meeting new folks with a common interest was absolutely wonderful. I got a taste of Montana hunting, and I like what I saw/experienced. In fact, I'm already making plans to go back. I have hunted all over Alaska as well as other states and countries. I can tell you from first hand experience that Musselshell Outfitters is a quality operation, despite what a few negative posters would like you to believe. I have never had a guide or outfitter work as hard as Mr. Higgins and his crew to ensure my happiness and satisfaction. I will be going back.

I have had the opportunity to hunt in all three of Klazy3's camps and would highly recommend hunting in any of them. I will look forward to returning to hunt with Klazy3 again in the future.

The Hunt I booked was supposed to be on the Powder River Ranch. The Outfitter lost the lease and did not inform me of this until I arrived at camp. In fact as of 11-11-04 It still shows this ranch available for hunting. The Mule deer I say were in the 22-26 inch class and not really the quality of Mule Deer that I was told to expect.

I have hunted all over the US and Canada. Floyd and Marilyn are the best. They have a ranch in Roundup, Montana that is groomed year round to hold and keep whitetail and mule deer. You will never see more deer, including large bucks, than you will see here. There antelope hunting is done on another ranch, there were 3 of us, we got there at 9am and were done by noon time. This outfitter is 100%, the best. They do not advertise and only take a few hunters per week, if interested contact me and I will give you there phone number.

Has of this report his Lic is in active Probation. Don't think of hunting with this guy. One of the violations was he did not pay his guides. Another was he hired guides that were not Lic. The other was a citation from the MT fish and wildlife for guiding /hunting on land he did not have permission. If you don't believe me call the MT Outfitters Association 406-841-2373.

Can't say much more than what is indicated above. These are good people with thousands of acres to hunt, friendly, experienced guides, very nice accomodations, great cooks, lots of game, lots to do after you "tag out" on your antelope, muley, or elk. Plenty of upland birds and waterfowl opportunities. No negative "surprises", all things were acurately represented. No guide pressure to tag out instead of waiting on trophy yet they generally experience 100% success on the targeted species. Bottom line, after two Alaska hunts, three canadian hunts, multiple TX waterfowl hunts etc, this was the best run outfitter/guide service we have experienced.

Donny is a great guy with a great place to hunt. The hunt takes place in the Milk River where they shoot the Realtree videos. I killed a 130" 8 point on the 3rd morning of the hunt. Should have killed a 150" buck the first day. Saw 19 bucks the first day. You hunt irrigated alfalfa fields along the river. The river is the only bedding for miles. The mosquitos are world class. For a pope and young buck, I can't believe that there is any place better. If you are looking for that once in a lifetime 180" buck, this is not the place but you will see 130" bucks everyday.

I went to Elk Creek for a Combo Elk/Deer hunt. The lodge at Elk Creek is beautiful and the accommodations are excellent. My hunt was a 2 on 1 hunt. I was paired with a hunter who was on his 4th trip to Elk Creek. On the first day , the first 15 minutes of the hunt I shot a nice 4x4 mulie that the other hunter and guide had overlooked.(spot and stalk)The country in Montana is gorgeous but you had better be in great shape for this hunt or you wont enjoy it as much. I had a really good time...however I was disappointed with the effort that was put forth by my guide to put me close to an elk the remainder of the week. Especially the last evening , when he put me in a stand behind Brents house for Elk and there was another hunter right behind me blasting at a spike deer.I just felt like he took the easy way out. He could have brought me where we had at least seen Elk earlier that week. But that's the problem when you book a 2x1 hunt. I spent the majority of the week hunting alone while the guide was trying to get the other hunter a deer. I would love to return to Elk Creek and try again. This time I would book a 1x1 hunt and hope for a more experienced guide.

Outfitter / Owner: Leonard Howells

Hunter: Steve Boswell

Animals Hunted: Elk, Deer

I booked a ten day archery hunt, one on one. My guide was the owner and we had agreed to a pack in on horses, high country hunt for deer and elk. We never used horses. We never packed in and we never hit the high country. The weather cooperated, but the outfitter always had plenty of excuses. I saw one cow elk in ten days and the only deer seen were a few doe and yearlings that hung around camp. The oufitter lives year round in the area I hunted. It soon became obvious the outfitter did not scout beforehand. The oufitter was busy trying to put the motor back into his truck during the middle of the day when he had told me this is when we would be fishing while in the high country. His wife guided me on a couple occasions while he worked on his truck. I found out later she was not licensed during the time she guided me. Between the outfitter and his wife arguing and pack rats climbing around the cabin, it was an interesting time to say the least. The outfitter has about eight to ten horses/mules with new saddles and gear but didn't have equipment to transport them. I contacted Montana Guide and Outfitter Association to file a complaint, with little to no satisfaction. The Board members are guides and outfitters themselves. This outfitter has had several complaints filed against him in the past but none have been sustained; therefore, he is in good standing with the Board.

Animals Hunted: Elk and Mule Deer

I hunted with Upper Canyon Outfitters several years ago (1999), but I just found this site and I think that it's such a great tool for someone planning a hunt that I wanted to add my review.I have been on two rifle elk hunts out West in the past few years. During both hunts, the weather was unseasonably warm. I learned that hunting elk in hot weather (when they are not in rut) is extremely difficult. There were four in my party. My uncle saw three elk at 7:00 the first day, but those were the last any of us would see. The guides worked hard for us (particularly Donna's brother Joe), although I think that a few of the other guides may have been a little unfamiliar with the territory. We covered a lot of ground in five days, but we just couldn't get on any elk. If you go with UCO, try to get Joe as a guide and you won't be disappointed. That is a big compliment, considering I didn't see any elk. The lodge is really nice and comfortable and the rest of the staff is great. Also, the horses were amazing. I'm not a big horse guy, but they were really easy to ride, even on some pretty rough terrain.I listed this hunt as just "good" because we didn't see any elk. I'm pretty sure that was because of the weather. Considering all of the other aspects of the hunt, if we had seen some elk, it would have been an "excellent" hunt.Feel free to contact me with questions.

I have just come back from a late season (rifle) elk hunt. My outfitter, Jeryl Williams was honest with me about the quantity, quality of game and shooting opportunities. If a man is honest then he is probably also a hard worker and takes pride in doing a good job. He probably hires guides who exhibit these qualities also. Jeryl Williams lives by these principles. My guide, Jeff, also exhibited these traits. He knew where the elk were and got me there each and every outing. His decision making and skill at stalking to get me close enough was superlative. I got a small bull (my first) on the second morning and my biggest white tail ever (20 inches inside)that same afternoon while Jeff was getting my elk off the mountain. I saw several muy grande mule deer but the season had just ended and my tag was only good for a whitetail. The Big Horn sheep that I saw every day are plentiful and within easy access if one is lucky enough for the tag.

Despite ideal cold weather hunting conditions, the rut being under way, a trully excellent guide that knew the land in detail and worked his butt off from the crack of dawn to the dark of dusk, I was disappointed with both the quality and quantity of mule deer that we came across. I had one opportunity at a really nice buck. It came on the 3rd day. He was spooked out of a draw and the only shot I had was as he was moving out at 275 +/- yards. I missed. I saw maybe 10-12 bucks total. Only 4 were decent. On day 4, I opted to take a 22" wide, tall, deep forked 4x4 with kickers at the bases that brought it to a 6x8. I was satisfied. If I return to HVO I will pay the extra $$$ and book a hunt in one of their "restricted" access areas. The bucks taken from these during the week were all excellent. HVO runs a straight up, 100% fair chase, by the book hunting operation. The camp food is "ma-ma" made. Great table fare and more than the camp could possibly eat. Camp house is Spartan but more than adequate.

You are always apprehensive when putting a hunt together for a group of friends. These guys made me look like a genius with the overall quality of their operation and attention to detail. Our group of 8 limited on both deer and antelope by the end of the second day. We hope to return next year.

We saw more game in one day than we ever imagined. All four in our group shot our deer the first day, three of us the first morning. Saw lost of mule deer and whitetail. Also plenty of antelope, but did not have a tag and elk too. After we tagged out we hunted pheasant and coyotes too. Never a dull moment. The food was home cooking from scratch, more than you could eat. I can not say enough about the outfitter and guides. All know their stuff and are willing to work as hard as you are to get your trophy.

This trip was more than I expected. The people knew their function and were extremely accomodating to whatever your hunting needs and desires were (as long as it was legal). The food was so good I gained ten pounds while walking several miles a day. You will not regret getting to know these people and having the hunting experience of a lifetime. Thanks....jb

I hunted with Dwane in 2001 and took a nice P&Y antelope buck with my bow. I hunted with him again in September of 2003 and didn't score. The weather was really tough while I was there. They had rain, high winds, and cold. The bucks weren't coming to water well, and they weren't decoying well yet. I missed one buck, I think the 40 mph crosswind might have had a little to do with it. There were several other good bucks that we got close to, but they weren't quite within my limited range of 35 yards and less. The food was great, lodging was a very clean and comfortable lodge, and the people are really nice. You can't go wrong hunting with Flatwillow Creek Outfitters, I hope to be hunting with them again in the next few years.

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule Deer

I booked my first elk hunt with Mark and Deanna in Sept. 2002. Tagged my first elk, a 6X6 the first afternoon. Mark knows the area extremely well and got this rookie elk hunter a 25 yard shot with a bow. Spent the rest of the week chasing several nice muleys around the ranch. Was a great hunt with only two hunters in camp and we stayed in an nice older ranch house that was located close to some coulees with several mule deer. For the antelope hunters there are tons of them around. Deanna cooked lots of good food and I had a great time. I would definitely recommend Mark and Deanna as outfitters that work hard to make sure you have a great hunt both in the field and in camp.

Animals Hunted: black bear

Two of us hunted with Wayne in May '03 for spring black bear. He guided me. We saw one small blond bear the first evening, then I took a large, jet black bear the second morning. I couldn't be happier with my hunt. Wayne's a native and knows the area well...mind you, he's "rough" around the edges, but committed to getting you on game.My buddy hunted the week (with me tagging along) with another guide and saw a couple of bears, mostly small, mostly far off, with no shot opportunity.I'm no expert by any stretch, yet even though the NW corner of Montana is supposed to be the best area for bears in the state, my sense is actual bear density is fairly low.

Outfitter / Owner: Al/Sally/Joe Haas

Hunter: Daniel F. Courtier

Animals Hunted: Elk/Mule Deer

I hunted with A Lazy H in the fall of 2000. The hunt was advertised as an early season rifle bugle elk hunt. Hunted for a whole week and never saw an elk, never heard a bugle. The hunting day consisted of riding out of camp in the morning, sitting on top of a ridge for the whole day then riding back to camp. Two hunters out of the six that were in camp with me killed mule deer. One 24" 4 x4 the other a 2 x 3. I did enjoy the pack in experience and would consider taking my wife back for a wilderness trail ride in the summer. I would not hunt with A Lazy H Again.

The hunt was everything advertised....rare in my experience for a guided elk hunt. You can't beat the accomidations, food, guides, and the hard work they went through. I got a 5x5 the last day...all 6 hunters in the camp had an opportunity of a 5x5 or better during the week...a few nice 6x6's were taken. Russ is a full time local guy that knows his herd and how to hunt it. In my opinion, if you doin't get a chance at a decent bull, it will be due to the weather or the hunter being out of shape....things out of MHCT control.

Private Ranch hunts during the rut. The guide and I saw 6 to 8 bucks everyday that were 23-25inch, most were very nice bucks. I was holding out for 26 or better and we saw three in that range in 4 days. I missed the shot I had, my fault not the guides. The outfitter offers Rut hunts so seeing the animals most of the day was common. Fun hunt and I am going back to give it another shot.

I shot an average 4x4 Mulie (which I spotted, dressed & dragged myself)but they have NOT killed an Elk since 1997. The TWO big bulls (in the brocure)were killed by a father & son that happened to head them off in a vehicle as they crossed the road. Terribly misrepresented and a waste of money. They had only ONE experienced guide in 2000 and he was let go along with the entire staff in 2001. Do NOT book here !!!!!!!!!

Outfitter Review: Weare's Outfitting - Montana

Outfitter / Owner: Eric Weare

Hunter: Sean F. Salvarezza

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer/Elk

I have hunted with Eric twice, 1999, 2001 and I am planning on going back 2003.Both trips I killed very nice mule deer and had opportunities at trophy elk. A good friend of mine killed a beautiful non-typical mule deer in 1999 and another friend killed a very good 4x4 Mule deer that year to go along with mine. My father killed a 6x6 elk in 2001, to go along with my second 4x4 mule deer. The 2001 trip was marred with very poor weather conditions, or else we probably would have seen more game. The one clear day we had I killed a Mule deer and saw several other deer and Elk. If not for hunter error (mine) I would have harvested a beautiful elk after tracking it through the snow for the better part of a day.Eric runs a tight ship and his guides are extremely hard working and do everything in their power to put you on game.Keep in mind this is a public land hunt in very difficult terrain. You need to be in good physical condition. The shots can be long range so you also need to be prepared for that. There are no guarantees for a trophy, but in my opinion you can count on this outfitter giving you maximum effort, and they will hunt as long and as hard as you are able. It is also my experience that the guides have an intimate knowledge of land they hunt, and spend the off season scouting and preparing. You also hunt in some of the most beautiful country in the world. For my money, this outfitter is tough to beat.Oh yeah - the food and camp are great too.

Outfitter / Owner: Floyd Mitchell

Animals Hunted: Mule Deer

This was my first mule deer hunt. Booked the hunt through Cabelas. It was not the type of hunt I expected. The country is wide open and they hunt from vehicles. You are stuck in a Chevy suburban from sun up to sun down. Got to glass and stalk up on a nice buck in the Mountain area of the property. No luck on my shot. Took a nice average 4x4 the third day. I believe I could have taken a much better buck had I had more time, However my youngest daughter went in to the hospital back home on the second day of my hunt and I had to rush home. The thing that impressed me the most was the good nature of the owner and guides. They were all local guys who had grown up together in Broadus. They were as friendly as could be and worked hard to get you an animal. I would go back in a heart beat.

Animals Hunted: Mule & Whitetail Deer

2002 marks the 8th year in a row I have hunted with Flatwillow Creek Outfitters. This year our party of four took a 19" 5X5 whitetail, 23" tall, heavy 5X5 mulie, 25" tall, heavy 5X6 mulie, and a 27" non-typical 4X5 mulie. This outfitter just keeps getting better and better. The hunt is fantastic but the quality of the people out shines everything. This hunt is the highlight of my year and I can not imagine a year without a trip to Flatwillow Creek Outfitters. Our party of 7 has already booked for 2003.

My partner along with the other 5 hunters in camp hunted whiteails. All hunters sighted nice mature bucks every day. My partner shot a 120+ class buck. Alot of deer in the river bottoms. Guides work very hard.Highly recommend hunt . I will be returing next year.
