Researched this outfitter for a year. Research included refrences, talking to the outfitter numerous times, Association membership, I even researched local newspapers trying to find some bad information on this guy. People really need to research Outfitters, not just there hand picked refrences, I put this guy through the ringer. I had never been on a guided hunt before, I intended not to be taken advantage of. Had my buddy call him numerous times, and we cross referenced all the answers, didnt miss a beat.. So I booked him. From the minute we arrived, It was top notch treatment, this guy busts his back to make things great for his clients. He cares, and understands bow hunting, does not offer gun hunts, this is a big plus in my book. He is a bowhunter!Food was first class, other folks in camp were great, he is a big guy, but a respectable and funny guy, he will tell stories that will keep you entertained for hours. Better be prepared to hunt hard, eat hard, and laugh hard.Stands were in great location with lots of "fresh" sign, wind directions were taken into consideration, canopy was good, shooting lanes good, and stands were solid and in good condition.I harvested on second day, but I had to get the assistance of the outfitter. I had a marginal hit, little far back. the outfitter helped me track the buck through some nasty bush, and the whole time he's telling me we will find him, we will find him. He really saved my hunt, that alone makes me want to return some day. The lodge is amazing, clean, full of history, he is a great host, doesnt get drunk, excellent cook, and just a good guy.Any americans thinking of going on a Canadian archery hunt, with the possibility to kill from 125" to 190"s' It was a dream hunt. This guy really appreciates archers who come prepared, he has a beutiful range to fling a few arrows at. He does not take many hunters, so if you are serious about your bow hunting, he is too.

EVEN THOUGH I GOT A 140 CLASS BUCK, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS OUTFITTER. EVERYTHING ELSE COMES FIRST, THE CLIENTS COME LAST. HAVE BEEN WITH NUMEROUS OUTFITTERS, NEVER A PROBLEM. DON'T GO HERE. NOT BECAUSE OF THE HUNTING, ITS EVERYTHING ELSE.

Outfitter Review: Big Grass - Manitoba

Outfitter / Owner: Tom and Judy

Hunter: Skip Yaeger

Animals Hunted: whitetail deer

Went black powder hunting. Fall 2009. Only 2 hunters in camp. Put in same blinds over open fields 4 days in a row. Could see the other hunter. Saw 2 fawns and 2 does. They wouldn't let us out of the stands to walk. They wouldn't change us to different stands. Very unfriendly people to be around. Not much food and poor quality. Left early because we were so disgusted. Don't waste your money on this hunt.

Outfitter Review: Big Grass Outfitter - Manitoba

Outfitter / Owner: Tom & Judy

Hunter: john k from pa

Animals Hunted: Black bear

Spring bear hunt in second week of may 09 in manitoba canada. Weather played a factor in the number of sightings but that is all. I dont know where to being but first we ask what time of vehicle to bring and she said any type is fine the roads are in good condition so we rented a car the trip was fine until we turned off the main road and to the muddy sandy gravel road. The road had big ruts in it and bottomed the car out many times and we had to drive on this road for like 3 miles so once we were on this gravel road we were looking for the sign for the outter camp which i will come back to talk about and couldnt see a sign so we tried calling but had no phone service so we stopped at a farm to use a phone but the farmer knew where we were headed so gave us the direction and we made it to the outter camp.So we meet the owners they show us where we are going to stay for the week and no wonder why they dont show this on ther brochure or web site it is not very nice. They said this is only used for spring bear hunts. So we go into the place we were staying and the first thing that hits you when you walk though the door is a funky smell which was the water that was well water and smelled like sulfur and they were to cheap to put a water filter on. So we put our gear away and asked how many people were here because there was alot of stuff in the rooms and the lady said there is 11 people hunting and when we booked this hunt she said there is 8 hunters only so we asked why so many people and she never gave us an answer. We later talk to the other guys there and there was one group of guys who booked and came together and there was 7 of them so she new a year in ahalf that there were more then 8 guys in camp.So we go to eat dinner and they tell us that they fired the cook so the owner had to cook and be a guide.Breakfast was ok but the rest was terrible they need to hire a cook. So we go out on the hunt first thing i notice they abuse there equipment they have to go fast as they can or not at all. Some people didnt get picked back up from there stands till after 11 and later if people got bears. They gave you two way radios to call them if you got a bear but they dont work to well if there is no reception. Then later on we learned that all of the guys were close to each other the could hear a quad picking up another hunt and other hunters could hear you shoot. So at the end of the week 7 out of the 11 guys took bear i think two guys passed because of size and only one guy took a nice size bear over 450lbs. The only good thing i could say is they do have alot of colorphase bears there. They say it is a trophy hunt and take big bear but it is far from a trophy hunt and definitely not worth what there charge and the price is going up next year. So i would not recommend them to anyone.

Outfitter Review: Cupped Wings - Manitoba

Outfitter / Owner: Craig Henry

Hunter: Michael

Animals Hunted: Spring Snow Geese

I hunted with Craig in his west camp for snow geese in April 2009. We shot limits on 2 of our 3 days out (20 birds per man in Manitoba and one morning we had 60 before 8 am!) and the numbers of birds were mind boggling, they have some fantastic leases tied up right on the main migration flights and every day we saw over 10,000 birds up close, one day we must have had over 100,000 migrate right over us over a 4 hour period with non-stop action. I can't wait for next spring! Email me with any questions and I would be glad to answer them!

Outfitter Review: Davis Point - MB

Outfitter / Owner: Peter Kalden

Hunter: Pete Graziosi

Animals Hunted: whitetail deer

This outfitter had been illegally baiting deer for the past several years and was caught by manitoba DNR during the first week of ML season 2007. I believe that because he stopped baiting it was hit or miss if you were going to see any "shooter bucks". This outfitter is with cabelas under 'manitoba Monarchs' and i pity anyone who has booked with them. Sure the accomdations/food were good but I came up to hunt not eat/sleep. I shot a 9 pointer that scored 107 5/8 that week two other hunters shot 8 pointers that were the same size. This outfitter has many repeat clients as his success rate was high when the illegal baiting was taking place on his lands. There were 8 hunters in camp that week and probably 4 of us saw shooter bucks 130ish and over. One was wounded and never recovered,(350 yards) another one was passed as the hunter was looking for 140-145 or better, another hunter shot at one which turned out to be a 480 yard shot and missed another one that was 200 yards. I myself saw one at around 400 yards. In other words only 2-3 130-140 class deer were seen that were under 300 yards between 8 hunters. This outfitter success will suffer as he will no longer be baiting as it appears to me that the manitoba DNR will be watching him for this illegal activity.

Outfitter Review: Canadian Sub Arctic Hunting - Manitoba

Outfitter / Owner: Ken Gangler

Hunter: Lonnie Scott

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

I first learned of Ken Ganglers Bear Hunts from the successful hunts he provided for The Archers Choice TV show,I then met him at the St. Louis All Canada Show,Where I was shopping for a hunt for myself and two sons, Ken told me that the success on his bear hunts had been lower in 2006 due to an early ice out, and early green-up, but that Pryor to 06 he had been 100%, and we could expect a high success hunt.I discussed the fact that while I had hunted Canada several times, this was not only a Christmas Present, it was also going to be the first big game hunt other than our local Whitetails for my sons, and while his hunt was advertised as a fly-in trophy Black Bear hunt, my first concern was a hunt where I could be sure the boys would have the excitement of seeing a few bears, he assured me we would have active baits, and at one point he told me "You worry too much."When we arrived in camp we were shown a Huge dead-decomposing bear laying 40 yards from our tent that had came into camp the day before we arrived and had been shot by our guide.when I ask if any baits had been hit, I was told "NO" that the baits had only been put out two days before we arrived. There were a total of five baits on our lake, two of which we were told were being saved for the two guys coming in next week. Bottom line - no baits were touched all week. One 125 lb bear was seen by three hunters all week. When I returned to the main lodge we talked to two hunters from another camp who had seen one bear all week too. When Ken Gangler ask us what we thought was wrong, I tried to talk about the fact that the Ice had been off the lake for over two weeks and that by owning two of his own planes, he should have made it a priority to get the bait out sooner, he became very defensive and left me with the impression that he really did'nt care that I had spent 10 thousand dollars for the three of us a camping trip. My opinion, he is a very arogant man who has some good media coverage, but does not provide what he promises.

Just got around to adding this while stewing about my missing wolf. Hunted in May of 2004 for black bear. Out of 4 guys in camp, one guy saw one bear. Hunted five days and finally saw a wolf. Killed the wolf and left it in the possession of the guide and outfitter. Promised to clean skull and tan/mount hide on felt. Never got the wolf, every excuse in the world was given. They stole my once in lifetime trophy. Do not recommend at all.

Walter is having trouble selling all of his tags. I do not know why? I visited Manitoba again this year, 2006. What an adventure, 1 on 1 hunting/guiding/adventure. Tagged out on a 140 class chocolate antlered 300 lb. Montag Whitetail. The only whitetail out of his camp this year. He had a lot of cancellations. This camp is unhunted. We scouted miles of unhunted poplar bush, I am excited about my return in '08. Bush camp accomodations, wood stove heat, soft matress w/clean bedding, out of doors facilities, ham & eggs in the AM, pack a lunch for on stand, hot dinner in the evening, shower every other day. On stand early 1/2 hour before daylight sit until dark. Deer stands along heavy trails intersecting active scrape sign. Be patient, there are great deer here.

Hunter: Chris Fjermestad

Animals Hunted: Waterfowl

I am a waterfowl lover and hunter. I live in Minnesota and have hunted the big lakes for the last 20 years of my life like a religon, chasing that one or two days in Minnesota we get when "the migration is on". At Riverside it is on EVERY day. The quality of the lodge, personel, and hunting is the best I have ever seen. It is truly your dream day of bagging the kings of the big water Cans, Redheads, Greater bluebills, Goldeneyes etc. The landscape will also put you in the middle of every Redlin painting you have ever stared at, lost in a duck hunters day dream. I would recomend this hunt to anyone who loves waterfowling, it is truly first class!

Outfitter Review: Stony Ridge Outfitters - Manitoba

Outfitter / Owner: Norm Bruce

Hunter: Thomas West

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

Hello Fellow Hunters: I have just returned from a five and a half day hunt with Stony Ridge Outfitters in the Swan River area of Manitoba. The hunt costs 2000 bucks and license, lunches, motel room, are supplied. The hunt is fully guided with quads being used to take you to your stand out in the bush. The land is public ground with almost no hunting pressure on it. Three of us went with one hundred percent shot opportunity. My friend took a very nice eight pointer after missing a much bigger deer. I tagged out first day with a 10 pointer that scored 142. I saw a bigger buck, but could not get a shot at it. I saw three bucks before I shot mine. The deer came to rattling and grunt calls, as did the eight pointer my buddy shot. My other hunting companion had hunted here before and had taken a super nice buck so he held out to the last minute and missed a shot at what he said was a shooter. So two of us brought home trophies. We all saw some very big deer. I also missed a chance at a huge wolf. The hotel room is included in the package price and was clean, neat, and had maid service everyday. Lunches provided by the outfitter were very good. Breakfast and dinner are on your own. There are good places to eat in the town of Swan River at reasonable prices. The only fault I could find with the place is that the stands were crude and could be better and the outfitter has promised to work on that for future hunts. Norm Bruce only takes 4 hunters per week so you experience personal service on a level most outfitters do not provide. Contact Norm and he will do his utmost to put you on one of those Canadian Giants!

Outfitter / Owner: Craig Henry / Kevin Hay

Hunter: Jonathan Everest

Animals Hunted: Ducks/Geese

We hunted with Craig and Kevin up in the Interlake region of Manitoba. These guys are some of Canada's finest (full time firefighters). Lots of birds, about ten thousand private leased acres, lots of fun and they definitely know their stuff. Cathy and Ken hosted us back at the camp and ken will keep you laughing til your belly hurts. Cathy keeps the food coming until you are ready to burst and keeps the boys in line. The Goose hunting is phenomenal and the ducks were flying great too (we didn't limit every day on the ducks but shot enough shells to). Apparently these fellas have a couple of boat blinds and snow goose hunting now too but we didn't get a chance to do those on our trip. Equipment was good, comfortable blinds (fell asleep in the blind). The only thing I can see them improving on is parking arrangements back at camp and maybe a kennel, but it was a wet year. Highly recommended

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

Hunted with Art, Craig and Ellen in Gillam and they put on a great week. Killed my bear on Thursday night after seeing other bears early in the week. Not a record book bear but I saw one that would rank up there. Accomodations were in a comfortable B and B owned by Ace and everyone had their own room. Try the train ride to Churchill and polar bear tours if you tag out early! All hunters tagged out, meals were good. Only concern would be that the stands seemed low, but they have been doing this for 15 years they(it shows) and say they have yet to lose a hunter.

Outfitter / Owner: Ron Cheskosky

Hunter: Dan Swanson

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

Ron and his guides do everything they can to provide their hunters with the best possible experience. Hunts are not easy and certainly not guaranteed, but if you want a chance at a big buck Ron and his guys will try their hardest to accomidate you.I have never seen someone work as hard and be as dedicated to his job. I don't know how he makes it through the season. Every day Ron was up before the hunters and never went to bed until well after the hunters. He dedicated time each night to checking on each hunting party and recommending changes in tactics as he felt necessary. The hunters are the number one concern. Although it was an average year in Manitoba, my experience was well above average.

This is a well run bear camp. Good accommodations and lots of great food. Big bears in this area, which is next to a national park. The baits sites were well maintained and everything was well run.Took an excellent bear on the second night with a muzzleloader. Well over 450 pounds (this is a spring bear - in fall he would have weighed a hell of a lot more) and a skull that makes 4 record books. All hunters tagged out.Good trophy care and would highly recommend this outfitter for black bear.

Fisher Branch,MB this area is one outfitter beside another. Not one being better than the other for whitetail deer except the $$$$. You cannot find a better one man operation than this one. Walter does it all. If your stand is inactive he moves you, he is continually looking for the fresh sign. His stands are over deer trails and scrapes (huge scrapes). The deer are in this area, the hunting is hard, this is an adventure not a resort. Remember the weather has much to do with success. Walter gives you 110% and expects dialog, feedback. Hunter: Pete Graziosi

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

I hunted the week of 11/22-11/27 I saw 12 bucks with 5 of them being 8 pointers. None of these bucks scored over 90-100. My friend shot a 9 pointer that scored about 105-(last day). The owner and the guide were happy and said it was a nice deer. The other hunter in camp shot a 10 pointer that would had scored around 120 if the a G-2 tine had not been broken off(Guide said it was on the high side of what had been shot in that camp) . When booking the hunt I was lead to believe that the success rate was around 75% and the average deer was around 135-140. ( Maybe the outfitter meant weight not points). The guide did his best but it was the owner/outfitter who was the shrewd talker(liar). I should have known as we found out later that the owner Doug Grantham is an attorney. This hunt was a total rip-off.

I hunted the third week of november for 5.5 days and saw a total of 9 deer. 4 bucks and 5 does I shot a 9 point buck that scored around 100. it was the second biggest buck taken that week the other buck was around 120. The guide was happy for me and said that the deer I took was fine. The outfitter lied to myself and my friend. He stated 75% success ratio with 140-150 class deer making up app. 40- 50% of the deer taken with rest being in the 120-130 range. This outfitter was a crook only positive thing about the hunt was that the guide and the 3 hunters in camp got along well. The weather was warm the first day and very windy the second day but after that the conditions seemed fine for this late season hunt. DO NOT USE THIS OUTFITTER!!!!!!!!!!

Erik did everything he promised. The only problem was a once in 25 yr. snow storm the second day of the hunt. With 8" of snow the bears shut down. Even with that our group of 4 still managed to take 2 bears. I guess weather is still one thing an outfitter can't control. The accomodations and the rest of the experience was as I was told and I'm very confident that had it not been for the freak snow, that all four of us would have taken bears. We saw some very large tracks so I know that the big boys are there. We'll get them the next time. I would highly recommend Birch Point-just do your fair weather dance before you leave-lol. Good luck.

I have hunted with the Rickards Family for the past four years. They treat you kin and make sure you have an enjoyable experience. I've shot a colored bear every year. One a platnum blond that weight(not guessed) at 453 lbs. Colored bears seem to outnumber the black ones. I had 17 different bears hitting my bait one night ! It is normal to have many sightings at each bait station every niight. They do all the things a good guide service should do and accomodate every hunters needs and physical abilities. Rhey have not sent a hunter home without a bear since 1987 unless it was the hunters choice not to shoot.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

I would like to thank Randy and Jeannie for a fantastic hunt. I have hunted Canada for 15 years and this hunt was one of the best. I was told that if I could hold off on shooting a small deer there was a good chance of seeing a buck 160 or above. I did see bucks from 120 to 180. I did not shoot a deer. This was due to no fault of the outfitter, but my luck was not with me. I have shot numerous large deer and did not need to shoot a deer to have a good time.Although I had chances at 140's I did not choose to shoot at them. I have already booked for 2004 season and hopefully many seasons to come. As all good hunter's know, some clients in camp cannot be pleased no matter what.

Went the second week of rifle season. Full moon, action was slow but steady. Nice bucks were taken. I shot my buck on Saturday afternoon. It was 23" inside and 25" outside. Great for an 8pt. We came up with 145" gross score. I was happy as one could be. I will be going back next year with my freinds. Hopefully I can get a 150-160 class. This is going to be the 3rd year and I cant see myself going elsewhere for deer or bear. Any questions feel free to contact me. Happy hunting.

I hunted two day's in the fall and saw bear each night. Weather can play a big part in how your hunt plays out as I was rained out two nights. Over all Jerry did a very good job on placeing me on active baits. On my second night of hunting I kileed a nice bear weighing over 300 pounds.

Outfitter / Owner: Bert Kozakowski

Animals Hunted: BLACK BEAR

I took my son on a bear hunt for his 12th birthday. I would have liked to shoot a bear but could only afford 1 hunt. I figured that I would enjoy watching him take his first bear as much as taking one myself. I was right! It was awesome to watch Matthew get pumped up when the bears came in. I was afraid he would choke up at the shot but he kept his cool and took his first bear with one clean shot. I am one proud dad. The shots at most bait sites are close enough for a bow. A few of my freinds took their bear with a bow. One of my buddies saw 15 bear in one evening. There are lots of bears. Bert had 100% success this year. I know its true because all the tags were filled by people that I knew. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Happy hunting and a big thank you Bert!

This is a first class outfitter. The owner really takes of you and makes you believe that you are his number one priority for the week. When there was only one person in camp that needed a bear, the guides worked as a team to help him.I look forward to hunting with Peter in the near future.

I went to Manitoba the first week of Nov. 2001. Hunting conditions were poor due to extremely warm weather and a full moon. The buck sign was the best I have ever seen. Big trees were torn up and there were plenty of scrapes. The deer shut down because of the heat. Bert has some big deer but I went at the wrong time. I will be going back this spring for a bear hunt and this fall for deer. I believe there are some Quality animals to be taken. His hunters have taken them in the past and hopefully I will take some this year. Feel free to call me with questions.

The Outfitter package we went on put us on a remote lake. There were 3 bowhunters and 1 guide/camp hand. THe baits were out, we set up stands on active baits and replenished them as needed. We each took bear, 2 were P+Y, we ate well, especially thanks to the camps OUTSTANDING pike fishing, mostly on Flyrods! THere are places you will see more bears and bigger bears, with cushier surroundings (we stayed in heated wooden cabins) but for and outstanding overall adventure, this is great.

only 2 deer taken of 6 hunters , one was a 8 point with about a 15 inch or so spread the other6 or 7 point with maybe 8-10 inch spread both were poor examples of manitobas deer. we were promised 4 weel drive transportation to stands. neither was provided-no stands or 4 wheel drive tran. outfitter told me on the phone it would be a 6 day hunt we only got 5. i asked about sucess rate on deer around 130 he said that he could guarantee a 130 class animal and 150 or better ran about 65 percent. i could go on and on. just stay away from this one

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

This was my first black bear hunt. I went the last week of May (2000). The hospitality at Davis Point was first rate. It is a family run operation with home cooked meals. They have two fully furnished guest houses and a gorgeous main lodge. They also took care of you the moment you got off the airplane (transportation to and from the airport was included).I saw lots of bears and sat at different baits. Lots to look at! I saw bears every day. I took a very nice boar on my fourth day. All hunters in camp my week got a bear. They took care of skinning and butchering my meat and they cleaned the skull for us too. The outfitter also provided transportation of my hide to the taxidermist in Winnipeg. The taxidermist did an outstanding job too. They also offer fall bear hunting as well as whitetail and moose. I'd definately go hunt here again.I had no trouble with customs on either side of the border.

MYSELF AND MY HUNTING PARTNER HUNTED FOR BLACK BEAR WITH DON IN MAY OF 2000 AND WE FLEW INTO HIS SNAKE LAKE CAMP. WE FOUND HIM TO BE VERY PROFESSIONAL, EXPERIENCED AND HONEST. THE CAMP EQUIPMENT PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY AND NO ONE LEFT THE COOK TENT HUNGRY. THERE ARE ONLY 4 HUNTERS IN CAMP ON ANY HUNT AND WE WERE HOUSED IN A HARD WALLED TENT THAT WAS DESIGNED FOR 6, SO WE HAD PLENTY OF ROOM. THE LOCAL INDIAN GUIDES, AL & HAROLD, WERE SUPERB AND WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WENT RIGHT. DON HAS EXCLUSIVE HUNTING RIGHTS TO A VAST AREA. THERE WERE 2 OTHER HUNTERS IN CAMP AND BETWEEN THE 4 OF US WE SAW A TOTAL OF 13 BEAR AND WE ALL TOOK BEAR RANGING BETWEEN 5'9" AND 7'8"

My spring '99 bear hunt was without a doubt one of the best hunting trips I've ever been on. The only downside to the whole trip was the weather(very, very wet). The camp however was warm, and dry. The meals were excellent and plentiful. The guides and personnel were friendly, knowledgeable, and EXTREMELY eager to do anything possible to make the trip enjoyable. Although the weather kept the bear activity low, the one good day we had brought a buzz of activity. Baits were well situated and active. I've already booked again for spring '00, and can hardly wait to make the trip again. A fantastic hunt with a great bunch of guys.

Last year, we had booked a Caribou hunt with Ted Jowett, that was to leave on Sept 19/99. Ted cancelled the caribou hunt on us because the plane that flies the hunters into camp had crashed. We asked Ted to refund our money, which he said he would. To date have not received our money, and we are in the process of suing Ted Jowett for our money. I don't recommend anybodybooking a hunt with this outfitter!

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

If you really want to get back into the deep woods, away from other hunters and civilization, this is the hunt. It is more than a hunt, it is a wilderness adventure to the greatest. You really feel like you are a mountain man. The hunt gives you the feeling that you are a mountain man while Whitetail Outfitters adds their touch of first class service. This is for real hunters, and I stress hunting. This is not placing a farm raised trophy buck in a fenced pen, driving you up in a limo and shooting it. You are in the Canadian wilderness hunting! There are no fences. You really hunt. There is no hunting pressures from other hunters which is great. The deer are not nocturnal so you see some nice big bucks. If you are looking only to kill something then go to TX for a pen raised deer hunt. If you are looking for the full outdoor experience, then this is it baby!

Ted worked his butt off to see that we had a good time. We were the first tow hunters in camp for the year. He let us ride along every day to check and rebait stands. All stands were hit every night. Many big bears around we learned a lot. We both shot average size bears on the second to the last night. Both of us are very happy with them. All stands but one are geared for bowhunters with most shots at less then 20yds. I shot mine at 15 with a muzzleloader. Next time I will take my bow.
