Live Hunts - Wyoming Archery Mule Deer Hunt - September 29 - Day 6

September 29 - Day 6
Wyoming Archery Mule Deer Hunt

Saturday A.M.

This morning I went back to the area that I saw the 25-inch buck the other morning and muffed the stalk on. I spent the first hour or so of daylight glassing the meadow where I saw the buck and his group, but didn't see any deer. I did see a buck through my binoculars, briefly, as he went over a small ridge high above the meadow. Not sure if it was him, but it was definitely a nice buck. That was all the action I got at that spot. It was still early, so I hit another area I'd been seeing some deer at. I didn't get to stalk a buck, but I did have some curious does spot me and come in for a closer look.

A few curious does come to check me out

A view from across the field

This evening I put up my ground blind where I stalked the 3x3 last evening, hoping he'll come back out two evenings in a row. Well, guess what? At about 5:30 I saw him come to the edge of the meadow, about 150 yards away. He seemed to ponder something for about a minute, and then inexplicably crossed the gravel road to the meadow on the other side! Oh, to read a deer's mind, to see WHY he did that instead of come by within range of my blind. I let him get out of sight and then got out of my blind and gave chase. It was a futile chase. The buck was on the move, feeding as he went. For every one slow step I took inside the woods, he took 5. It was a losing battle. Still, I continued to follow, and after a while he met up with a group of bachelor bucks that I hadn't yet seen this week, because they were in a different area that I hadn't been to. There was another nice 3x3 in that group, and a pretty decent 4x4. However, as before, I was not able to keep up with them and still be quiet, so I gave it up. I decided to immediately move my blind to this location and hunt it all day tomorrow. It's the last hurrah.

Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in Region C of Wyoming, in and around the eastern side of the Bighorn Mountains. I may also do some hunting on the plains, depending on what I find in the foothills and the mountains. I'll be hunting on a mixture of National Forest and BLM land. I did some research and found this to be an area with good numbers of mule deer with some pretty nice bucks too. I'll be real pleased to take any decent 4x4. This is new country in a part of Wyoming that I've not hunted before, and that's always fun. This is primarily going to be a spot and stalk hunt, with the slight possibility of using my ICE ground blind if I find a really good trail.

Equipment
I'm shooting a Martin Jaguar bow, set at 72 lbs. Arrows are 29-inch Easton 3-60 ACC's, with Wasp 125 gr. 3-blade SST Hammer broadheads. Depending on the terrain, I'm wearing almost exclusively Predator camoflauge. I have Fall Gray, Spring Green, Fall Brown, and Evolution with me on the trip, and will probably use all of them. Predator is awesome, and particularly in the Rocky Mountain West. I've also got a new Master Guide backpack made by Crooked Horn Outfitters that I'm eager to try out.
