Live Hunts - Wyoming Archery Mule Deer Hunt - September 25 - Day 2

September 25 - Day 2
Wyoming Archery Mule Deer Hunt

Tuesday A.M.
I started out this morning in the same spot that I saw the nice buck yesterday morning. My plan was to get a few hundred yards away in the dark and glass them to try and set up another stalk. Well, this morning the deer were a little more spread out, and I bumped into a few, who then in turn spooked the whole group and most of them ran into the woods. I couldn't tell if the buck was with the group, but I followed the biggest part of the group into the woods. Well, actually, I made a big circle to try and get in front of them, hoping they would calm down once in the woods and start feeding again. They did just that.

More deer

I spotted deer bodies moving through some young pine trees, and slowly moved closer to ascertain what deer there were. There were several does and fawns, and 3 of the young bucks with the group yesterday, but I didn't see the big buck, so I pulled out and headed back to my truck. I went to check out some other areas, and saw deer, but only does and 1 small forkie. This afternoon I'm going to check out an area I have driven past that looks good. I'm going to give this spot a rest.

Tuesday P.M.

The meadow in which I spotted the big buck this evening

I got to the new area at about 5:00 p.m., set up against a tree about 400 yards from where I hoped to see deer, and waited. After a little while I started glassing. Didn't see anything until about 6:15. As deer sometimes seem to do, it just appeared in an area I had just looked at and seen nothing. Now there was a white butt there. At first glance, with the deer's head down feeding, it appeared to be a doe. When it lifted it's head up and I got a good glance, though, I saw that it was definitely not a doe. It was a pretty nice buck. I couldn't tell how nice, but I was going to find out. Unfortunately, I had chosen a bad glassing location from which to execute a stalk. I backtracked quite a ways to get out of the deer's range of vision and to another patch of cover, but it was pretty difficult, and I think the buck probably saw me at a distance. I was able to get behind some cover to make an approach to get closer, and I was hoping that by the time I got closer the buck would have forgotten he saw something and gone to feeding again. Whether or not he forgot I can't say, but he had me pegged when next I saw him. The brush was tall, but there was a bit of open understory, and he probably saw my feet slowly moving, I'm guessing. He wasn't too concerned, but just watched in my direction for a few minutes. He continued to feed, but started going in a direction that, with the slowly failing light, made the chances of a successful stalk this evening doubtful. So, I backed off and hope to try him again tomorrow evening. I might set up my Double Bull ICE Blind where he was feeding and see if I can ambush him. Upon closer inspection (from 150 yards with my binoculars) I saw that he was not only a decent buck, he was a very good buck. He had only about a 17 inch spread, but he was a real tall 4x4, had good mass, and probably 2-inch brow-tines. I'm guessing he would gross score in the low to mid 150's. Definitely a buck I would be happy to take home with me. Check back tomorrow!

Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in Region C of Wyoming, in and around the eastern side of the Bighorn Mountains. I may also do some hunting on the plains, depending on what I find in the foothills and the mountains. I'll be hunting on a mixture of National Forest and BLM land. I did some research and found this to be an area with good numbers of mule deer with some pretty nice bucks too. I'll be real pleased to take any decent 4x4. This is new country in a part of Wyoming that I've not hunted before, and that's always fun. This is primarily going to be a spot and stalk hunt, with the slight possibility of using my ICE ground blind if I find a really good trail.

Equipment
I'm shooting a Martin Jaguar bow, set at 72 lbs. Arrows are 29-inch Easton 3-60 ACC's, with Wasp 125 gr. 3-blade SST Hammer broadheads. Depending on the terrain, I'm wearing almost exclusively Predator camoflauge. I have Fall Gray, Spring Green, Fall Brown, and Evolution with me on the trip, and will probably use all of them. Predator is awesome, and particularly in the Rocky Mountain West. I've also got a new Master Guide backpack made by Crooked Horn Outfitters that I'm eager to try out.
