Tuesday A.M. This morning we went to the same ridge where I killed my tom on Monday. The weather was only slightly better, with the wind only gusting to 25 mph instead of 40 mph. We hiked the whole ridge out to the end and then worked our way back, sitting and calling every so often in good looking spots, but to no avail. Steve thinks he heard one gobble far away on the roost. I didn't hear any gobbles the whole morning. It was overcast and windy all morning. We looked at a bunch of fields that Steve said usually have turkeys out strutting in them, and we didn't see anything. We've about decided that this weather just really has the birds screwed up. We probably walked close to 5 miles this morning between 6 a.m. and 12 noon, and didn't hear any gobbles in response to our calls, although we saw lots of turkey sign (scratching, etc.) This afternoon the weather cleared up and it's supposed to be cool and clear in the morning, and the wind is supposed to be slight. We have great hopes that the birds will really gobble well in the morning. We're going to hunt a private piece of land that produces well every year and it hasn't been hunted at all yet this season. The only really good thing that happened this morning was that we saw a whole lot of beautiful country, which made the long hike worth the trouble. That's the Cheat River in the background Check back for more action tomorrow, the last day of my hunt!
