A small 8-point buck that came right under my stand

Well, after hunting this spot for several days, I've come to believe that it is the mother of all deer funnels I've ever hunted. This morning I saw 25 whitetail deer, and 19 of those came within 10 yards of my stand. My stand sits at the head of a draw leading down to Alfalfa fields. There are also two wild apple trees about 40 yards away and the deer seem to be cleaning up the apples pretty well. Both trees are overloaded with apples right now, and they're ripe.

One trail that runs under my tree stand

Of the 25 deer I saw, 4 were bucks. There was a small 8-point, two different 6-point bucks, and a spike. All the bucks were slick except the spike, who was still in velvet. I had deer in view or underneath my stand for almost two solid hours this morning, but unfortunately no good buck.

Lance again saw some of the same deer I did, including the 8-point. Lance isn't so picky as I am about taking a good buck, and was going to try and take the 8-point but the spike saw him and they busted out of there. This evening Lance is going to hunt the stand I did, and I'm going to hunt a new spot where they've been seeing a few good bucks feeding in an Alfalfa field.

    Thursday P.M.
This evening I hunted an Alfalfa field where a few nice bucks have been seen feeding this week. I set-up my ground blind on the edge of a low swamp next to some very lush Alfalfa. I had very high hopes, but for some reason the deer didn't come out until after dark. I know that because I spooked some while walking out.

Lance saw 7 deer this evening, but no bucks came into range. I'm betting he will get a shot at a buck tomorrow morning, as that stand seems to be better in the morning.

This was the last day of my hunt. I had a great time even though I never drew my bow. There are lots of deer in the hunting areas and I saw a few nice bucks as well. I would highly recommend the hunt and hope to come and do it again in the future.

I hope you enjoyed this Live Hunt, and starting on Saturday, September 7 we have another Live Hunt coming to you. We're bowhunting deer in southeastern Montana - you don't want to miss this, it promises to have LOTS of action.

    Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in northeast Washington state Selkirk Mountains range. We are hunting with BearPaw Outfitters, owner Dale Denney. This is an archery hunt for Whitetail Deer and Black Bear. We will be hunting Bear most likely in the mornings and during the day, using a variety of techniques. The Bear should be eating berries and other soft and hard mast at this time of year, so we'll be trying to spot and stalk in on them. We may also hunt some waterholes for bear. This area has a pretty high occurence of color phase black bears.

For Whitetail we will be hunting the evenings and our primary method of hunting will be hunting from treestands overlooking trails heading to some of the many Alfalfa fields in this area. This area has some good bucks, probably a few of which will still be in velvet right now. One of the neat things about hunting this time period is that the bucks are still in their summer routines and somewhat predictable. We'll just how predictable they are!
