Washington Whitetail Deer &
Black Bear Bowhunt

  • Day 1
  • Day 2
  • Day 3
  • Day 4
  • Day 5

  • Wednesday A.M.

This morning I hunted the same spot I hunted on Day 2 in the evening, where I saw the good 8-point buck but couldn't get a shot. From daylight until about 7:30 a.m. I saw 21 Whitetail does and fawns and 5 Whitetail bucks. There was one good buck in the bunch, but they were all about 200 yards away. The spot I'm in is apparently a major funnel leading down the mountain to some Alfalfa fields. The constant deer activity has been enjoyable.

Lance hunted about 400 yards from me in the next draw over and saw quite a few deer as well. He had a 3x3 Mulie buck at about 50 yards but wasn't able to close the distance any closer for a shot. He also saw a few decent whitetails but they saw him too.

We're coming back to this spot this afternoon to see if we can't get a shot at a good buck.

    Wednesday P.M.
This evening we had lots of deer activity again. I saw 16 deer, including a small 6-point and a spike buck. The 6-point was slick but the spike was still in velvet. Still no sign of the big buck I saw in this spot a few days ago. He may be coming out after dark. Several deer that came by me came right under my tree and sniffed my foot trail.

Lance saw a lot of deer again, including some of the same ones I saw, but he saw them before they got to me.

We're both having a lot of fun seeing lots of deer. Now we only need some good bucks to walk within range!

Check back for more action tomorrow!

    Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in northeast Washington state Selkirk Mountains range. We are hunting with BearPaw Outfitters, owner Dale Denney. This is an archery hunt for Whitetail Deer and Black Bear. We will be hunting Bear most likely in the mornings and during the day, using a variety of techniques. The Bear should be eating berries and other soft and hard mast at this time of year, so we'll be trying to spot and stalk in on them. We may also hunt some waterholes for bear. This area has a pretty high occurence of color phase black bears.

For Whitetail we will be hunting the evenings and our primary method of hunting will be hunting from treestands overlooking trails heading to some of the many Alfalfa fields in this area. This area has some good bucks, probably a few of which will still be in velvet right now. One of the neat things about hunting this time period is that the bucks are still in their summer routines and somewhat predictable. We'll just how predictable they are!
