Live Hunts - northern Virginia Turkey hunt - April 25 - Day 2

Tuesday - April 25, Day 2 - northern Virginia Turkey hunt

This morning we woke to wet ground, meaning it rained last night. We drove to the area WMA in southern Fauquier County, 60 miles away, getting there in plenty of time. Since it was extremely overcast and dreary, we just sat in the car for a bit, thinking that the birds would probably stay on roost longer this morning. It was drizzling just a slight mist at this time.

For the next hour and a half we walked, sat, called, and did it all over again. We sat for a while in a setup on the edge of a slight ridge blind calling, but heard nor saw response of any kind. My hunting partners this morning were David Ethell, my wife's brother, and Matthew Chancey, my wife's sisters husband, both first-time turkey hunters. David was to be the first shooter this morning in the event that we located a bird. However, we did not locate a bird or hear a gobble of any kind. After being in the woods for about an hour and a half, it started to rain pretty good. We went to a local convenience store and got a bite to eat, then went to a part of the WMA which had a gas pipeline running through it. I was hoping that with the rain the turkeys would be out in the open. I was able to see for over a mile with my binoculars and no turkeys in sight. We also did not see any turkeys from the road feeding in fields in the area. By this time it was starting to rain much harder, and since you can hunt but to noon in VA for turkeys, we decided to call it a morning and come back tomorrow in hopes of it not raining. By now we are fairly discouraged, and we have one more day. We have talked to several other hunters, and also the closest check station, and they have all said the turkeys are acting very weird this year, not gobbling much, which is something obviously that we are experiencing. We'll try again tomorrow. Tune in tomorrow night for an update.
