North Dakota Whitetail Deer Live Bowhunt

Thursday A.M.

Well, apparently the stand I sat last evening isn't much of a morning spot. I guess the deer leave the sunflower field before daylight to go back to their beds, because I only saw 1 deer, and it was at a distance. About mid morning I got down to go scout for a new stand location where I had seen all the bucks come out yesterday evening.

Hard left view from my stand this morning

Putting a stand on the field edge was out of the question, because there was no tree taller than about 10 feet there, and those were really just big bushes. There were about 5 different heavy trails within a 60-70 yard stretch, so I just followed them into the brush. The further I went, the closer they came to each other until finally, about 150 yards off the field, I came to a row of trees, one of which was just big enough (about 6" in diameter) for me to put a stand up in. It was on the east side of all but one of the trails, and was within 30 yards of all but one of the trails. This was a good spot, because the predominant wind direction up here is from the west, as it had been the first day we got here and the first day of the hunt. I pulled down the stand I hunted in this morning and installed it in this spot. Just out of curiosity, I continued following the trails, because I was skeptical that the deer were bedding in this area of brush, I felt like they were probably bedding further away somewhere. My suspicion was confirmed when the brush ended and there was a big hillside with very tall grass. The trails leading into that grassy hillside were unreal - tracks of all sizes, and there was nothing else up there for them, but to bed. I decided to rest this stand spot tonight and hunt it fresh tomorrow evening.

The wind was blowing just a little bit this evening. Note the heavy deer trail at bottom right in the photo

During the day today I set up a stand on another corner of the sunflower field I hunted yesterday. There were some very heavy trails coming into the sunflowers out of a big field with head-high grass. One of the trails happened to be situated by a grove of about 5 big trees, one of which was quite suitable for a stand. This afternoon when I got to my stand, unfortunately the wind was really howling - not great hunting conditions. It was steady at 20+ mph, with gusts of much more than that. I hunted for an hour and since the wind hadn't abated at all, I threw in the towel for the evening. Even if I had seen a shooter buck in range, I'm not entirely confident I would have been able to hold my aim steady in all that wind. I'm going to hunt this spot again tomorrow morning, when hopefully the wind will have died down.

Trip Notes
This whitetail deer bowhunt takes place on a large acreage of public land in central North Dakota. A friend of mine had hunted here 2 years ago and had a good hunt, and invited me to go with him on a hunt there this year, so I couldn't turn it down. The area we'll be hunting is very open country, with very few trees big enough for a tree stand. There's a river bottom that runs through the area, but even that doesn't have many trees along it. There are a number of planted fields of corn and sunflowers, and there are a number of alfalfa fields as well. According to my friend, the deer will likely be really concentrating to feed in the planted sunflower fields, even more than the corn or alfalfa. We decided to come this early in the season because the bucks should still be in bachelor groups and in their late summer feeding patterns, hopefully making them a little more predictable.

Equipment
I'm shooting a Diamond Machete one cam bow set at 67 lbs., GoldTip XT Hunter 55/75 arrows, and Wasp SST Hammer 100 3-blade broadheads. I'm wearing Predator Spring Green camo on this hunt.
