Live Hunts - northern Missouri Turkey hunt - May 1 - Day 1

Monday - May 1, Day 1 - northern Missouri Turkey hunt

The bulk of this hunt was to take place on private ground in Linn County, and on the land of a fellow I know in the Macon area. Scouting did not reveal anything very exciting on the property in Linn County, so we are hunting private ground in the Macon area.

The first morning looked to be promising. Weather conditions were very overcast, but that apparently didn't stop the birds from being very vocal on the roost. From one spot, the area in which we initially set up, we heard probably 6 different Toms sounding off on the roost, regularly. They stayed on roost later than usual, I guess because of the overcast weather. They were answering our calling pretty regular. We were set up looking at a small field on top of a ridge, an area where the turkeys on this property regularly spend a lot of time, dusting, feeding and such. Once these birds came off the roost, though, they were in no mood to talk. We did see a lone hen come into the field to feed, but she was all. After they were quiet for awhile, we decided to get up and try to locate some of the Toms that had been so vocal on roost. Over the next 3 hours we walked probably a couple miles, and saw a few more hens, and a few Toms several hundred yards distant, but they had something on their mind and didn't pay our calling any heed. We heard one more gobble the rest of the morning, but it was extremely distant, too distant to chase. It rained off and on throughout the morning, so I called it quits for the day, excited about tomorrow because of a forecast for bright sunshine.
