Live Hunts - 2004 Missouri Live Turkey Hunt

Missouri Live Turkey Hunt
Day 2 - May 5, 2004

Wednesday A.M.

This morning I went to another property, a place where I killed a nice tom last spring. At gobble time I heard one tom gobbling a few hundred yards away in a piece of woods. I set up on the opposite edge of the field I thought was nearest to the tom. As it got light, though, I realized he was roosted closer to another field edge. I contemplated the situation, and decided to sneak over to the other edge of the field I was on to try and get closer to the tom. I was afraid it would be in vain, though, as he would probably fly down into the other field. I called off and on, and he would gobble occasionally, but not really answering me. To make a long story short, he DID fly down to the field I was on (I watched him flap, flop and bang his way through the woods to get there from his roost tree). He strutted a bit out of range but never would come close enough for a shot. He passed by me at about 50 yards and ended up walking 25 yards from the tree where I had first been set up! I should have stayed put, I guess.

I didn't hear any more gobbles this morning. I'm hopeful that a weather change tomorrow may bring a change in the behavior of these toms and make them a little more talkative and "in the mood".

Check back tomorrow for Day 3!

Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in northwest Missouri, on private land that is part of the Mid-America Hunting Association, of which I am a member. The MAHA has over 230,000 acres of quality private land in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa leased for hunting by it's members.

Equipment
I'm shooting a Remington 870 Express Magnum with Remington 3-inch, 2 oz. #6 shotshells, which pattern very well in my gun. I'm using an H.S. Undertaker choke. I'm wearing Predator Spring Green camo on this hunt, as it really blends in with the Spring colors.
