| Hunt Introduction This hunt takes place in northwest Missouri, on private land that is part of the Mid-America Hunting Association, of which I am a member. The MAHA has over 230,000 acres of quality private land in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa leased for hunting by it's members. I've been a member these last 4 years and enjoy being in the association a great deal. I've had successful turkey hunts on MAHA properties in Missouri and Kansas the last 2 years, and I'm hoping to make it 3. Tuesday A.M. This morning I went to a property that I bowhunted for deer last fall and thought it looked like good turkey country. It's gently rolling and is a mixture of wooded creekbottoms and croplands, like much of the area up here. It was a nice morning and I was hoping to hear a few gobbles at least. I climbed up on a ridge to listen and didn't hear any gobbles about "the time", so I started hiking around to different spots to try and shock a tom into gobbling with my owl hoot and crow call. About 6:30 a.m. I heard a faint gobble, back in the direction I had started out the morning. I got back over there as soon as possible and heard him gobble a few times more. He was bedded in a creekbottom, and I was torn about how close to get. My first instinct was to stop where I was, about 150 yards away. I should have listened to my gut instinct. Instead, I got about 50 yards closer and found that I was slightly mistaken about his actual location. A few minutes later he flew down about 100 yards away and I realized that he probably had been able to see me moving closer. A few hens flew down with him and of course they went in the opposite direction. I didn't hear one more gobble all morning, and I covered a lot of country calling. This was not an encouraging sign for the rest of my hunt. I hoped very much that tomorrow would be different. turkeys are definitely in the area I snapped this picture of the sunset as I was driving around the countryside this evening
