This is an unguided hunt for Merriam's Turkey in Union County, New Mexico on private land with A&M Adventures. Where we'll be hunting has only been turkey hunted very little, so I'm hopeful that we'll get some good action. Being towards the end of the season I'm hoping the toms will be lonely and eager to come to the calls.
Scouting Today (Saturday) we just drove around scouting, looking for turkeys with binoculars at a distance. We did well on that account. We counted probably about 40 turkeys in the area I'll be hunting tomorrow. They were right where they are "supposed" to be, roosting in a big cottonwood about 100 yards from a big alfalfa field where they like to spend the day. We saw a lot more than turkeys today as well. We saw about 35 elk, and probably close to 50 mule deer. In fact, in the field where we saw some of the turkeys we also saw mule deer and elk later in the evening. They come from the surrounding hills to munch on one of their favorite foods (much to the chagrin of farmers everywhere), alfalfa. The country here is mostly low elevation mountains, with lots of cedar, pinon pine, and oak brush. There are turkeys up in the hills and canyons, but the first day or two at least we'll be concentrating on the birds down in the valley. The pictures here are just a few of the ones we took today while scouting. The hunt starts tomorrow!
