This morning I hunted the same spot as last evening. Right at first light a small 4-point walked past. About an hour later a doe came running past, mouth open. About three seconds afterwards, the 6-point I saw last night came running right behind her. I watched him chase her all over out in a big field and into the woods across the way. They must have been tired.

That was all the deer that I saw this morning. I did also see a flock of about 25 Rio Grande Turkeys, mostly hens, jakes and poults. The moon has been extremely bright and the nights clear, and I'm guessing that the good bucks must be doing their chasing at night. With the amount of big rubs that I've seen, I know there are some big bucks around, they're just hiding out.

My evening spot - a water hole

After last evening and this morning, I noticed that most of the deer I saw seemed to be going to and coming from a certain part of the creekbottom. After this morning's hunt I went to see what I could find, and what I found was that a small part of the creek was actually holding water. In western Kansas water can be a real precious commodity, and the number of deer tracks around the water hole indicated it to be true in this case. Amazingly, there was a relatively straight tree within 20 yards of the water hole that I could use my climber with, so I got it set up.

Just as last evening, I didn't see anything until about 30 minutes before dark, and then deer started appearing, and they all headed my way with one thing in mind - water. In all, I saw nine deer this evening - seven does, one buck fawn, and one small 6-point. They all came to water, but only half in light good enough for photos. This spot really has a lot of activity, so I'm going to hunt here again tomorrow. With all of these does around, it's only a matter of time I believe, until a good buck comes in following one of them.

Check back tomorrow for more action!
