Thursday A.M.
This morning I hunted the bedding area where I jumped the Whitetail does yesterday. I went in well before daylight, set up my climbing stand, climbed up and waited for shooting light. As the sun came up I noticed a deer trotting across an opening in my general direction, and it had a big rack. As it got closer though, I realized that it was a big Mule Deer buck, not a Whitetail. It was going to pass me at about 50 yards, but I wanted it to come closer so I could get some pictures. Just hoping to get lucky, I used my Primos "Can" call twice, and the buck stopped dead in his tracks, looked my direction and then came to my tree on a string, enabling me to get some nice photos. He was a nice buck, one I'd be happy to take if I had a Mule Deer tag. A little bit later I saw the same small 8-point Whitetail I've seen twice already this week. He was just cruising through the woods, but too far for a good photo. I saw a group of deer about half a mile away but I couldn't tell what they were. At 8:00 a.m. two Whitetail does walked right under me, headed to bed, but unfortunately there was no big buck trailing them. Thursday P.M. This afternoon I did some scouting on a different property about 20 miles away that another MAHA member told me had some good Whitetail habitat. He was right. In fact, I can't remember where I've ever seen so many rubs and scrapes in such a small area. In a 50 yard radius there were probably close to 20 rubs on pretty good-sized trees, and around a dozen ground scrapes. It's a creekbottom that borders a standing milo field and there are some pretty awesome trails. I found a tree that I could use my climber with and got set up.
I didn't see anything until almost dark, and then heard some footsteps running through the creekbottom. Two does ran up the bank being chased by an 8-point. It was bigger than most of the smaller bucks I've been seeing, but not quite what I was looking for still. It was running around in a thicket and I never could get a good picture. A few minutes later a nubbin buck walked under my stand, and then right at dark a 4-point walked under my stand. No big bucks this evening, but I'm hoping for some action there in the morning. Check in tomorrow for more action!
