A few Whitetail does feed past

This morning I hunted my ground blind again. About 7:30 a few Mule Deer does walked past, then nothing for the next half hour. At about 8:00 a.m. two Whitetail does and fawns came walking down the same trail as yesterday - probably the same deer. They looked at my blind yesterday and didn't like it much. I guess I was a little overzealous in trimming my shooting lanes and trimmed too much. Today they looked at the blind but it didn't bother them and they kept on walking. They were still in sight when I heard a grunt from the direction they had come. I knew what that meant. I picked up my bow, nocked an arrow, and then looked out the window to see a very nice 10-point buck with LONG brow tines (7-8 inches) coming down the trail after the does. He stepped behind a cedar bush beside the trail and when his head appeared on the other side he looked right at my blind and stopped, alarmed. I didn't have a clear shot to his vitals, even though the buck was only 20 yards. He didn't wait to see what the blind was, he made a few jumps, snorted once and then was out of sight, taking along with him a small 8-point that I hadn't seen.

    A few Mule Deer does

There is no other suitable place for my ground blind to watch those trails and still be well concealed, so after much head scratching and looking around I figured out a way to make a treestand work in one of the trees overlooking the convergence of trails. I took the ground blind down and set up the chain-on portable stand instead. It's about 23 feet up, and I like the set-up. I'm going to let that area rest this evening and tomorrow morning, and will hunt it starting tomorrow evening.

    My evening spot

About 300 yards from where I've been hunting, I found a good trail with a tree that would accept my Summit climbing stand, so I hunted there this evening. The trail is a very heavy one, and there are also four big ground scrapes in the general area as well. At 4:30 a 5-point buck came walking down the trail. It would have been an 8-point, but on one side all it had was a small spike, the other side had 4 normal points. It was a young buck, so I just watched him. A little while later a doe came down the trail too. That was all I saw this evening. I'm going to hunt this spot again in the morning. I'm encouraged by the deer activity that I'm seeing. Between my one day of scouting and 2 days of hunting, I've seen 9 different bucks, including 3-4 shooter bucks. It was a blue sky, sunny day today too, that was nice. Looking forward to tomorrow.
