Live Hunts - 2004 Kansas Live Turkey Hunt

Kansas Live Turkey Hunt
Day 2 - May 12, 2004

Wednesday A.M.

This morning I woke up to howling winds, driving rain and non-stop thunder and lightning - a real perfect morning for turkey hunting, no doubt. Still, I decided to drive to my hunting area and hope that by the time I needed to get out there and set up that the storm would have passed. Unfortunately, I had no such luck. So, I reclined the seat in my car and snoozed off and on until it finally quit raining at about 8:30 a.m.

I went out at that time but with the wind still going pretty good it was tough trying to locate any birds. Then after a little while it started raining again, so I retired into a deep creek bottom and tried to find some shelter beneath a big cedar tree in the shadow of a cut bank. I still got soaked, but it took a little longer. To make a long story short, I heard one or two gobbles at a distance, couldn't get any birds to work, and eventually got pretty darn cold being soaking wet and in 20-30 mph winds, so I turned in.

I went back later this evening to see if I could roost that tom again. Sure enough, right before dark here he came and flew up into the same tree. Tomorrow morning I'll be waiting for him down near the wheat field instead of up on the ridge.

Check back for tomorrow's hunt!

Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in northcentral Kansas, on private land that is part of the Mid-America Hunting Association, of which I am a member. The MAHA has over 230,000 acres of quality private land in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa leased for hunting by it's members.

Equipment
I'm shooting a Remington 870 Express Magnum with Remington 3-inch, 2 oz. #6 shotshells, which pattern very well in my gun. I'm using an H.S. Undertaker choke. I'm wearing Predator Spring Green camo on this hunt, as it really blends in with the Spring colors.
