Live Hunts - South Texas Turkey Hunt - April 2 - Day 3

Monday - April 2, Day 3
South Texas Turkey Hunt

A.M. Hunt
This morning I went out with Justin (my guide from yesterday) and another hunter who was trying to get his second bird. It was a very tough morning. We went to some of the same places where yesterday the birds were really talking and responding well, and today they weren't at all. We'd hear a gobble every now and then, but when Justin called they wouldn't talk any more. We probably got on and tried to work at least half a dozen different birds this morning, and got close one time.

That one time a bird gobbled a few times and Justin called back and the bird gobbled twice from the same spot, so we decided to move in on him, thinking he had decided to stay put. Well, we rounded a corner and saw him on a run right towards us. Of course he slammed on the brakes when he saw us and the hunter couldn't get a shot quick enough. Another time we saw one tom strutting in the road and Justin and the hunter bailed out and tried to call him in. They had him responding to their calls with gobbles regularly, but while I sat in the car I saw why he wasn't going towards them. There were actually 2 other toms and 4 hens also as part of the group. I knew then they weren't going to break him away from the real thing.

This is the tom that was strutting in the road

P.M. Hunt
This afternoon I hunted a waterhole to try and shoot a pig with my bow. About 2 hours before dark a big sow with about 8 small to 75 lb. type shoats came in, but they were packed so tightly that I was concerned about shooting through and hitting a 2nd one on the back side, so I held off. It wasn't long before the wind swirled and those pigs took off. About 45 minutes later a lone big boar came in by himself and after a few minutes I was able to get a decent shot angle. He was quartering slightly towards me at a little under 20 yards. I shot and saw the arrow impact low in the chest about where I was aiming and go through. I had the boar in my sight as he ran almost 150 yards and then he was out of my sight. I got out of my blind and went to where he was standing when I shot, and I saw one little glob of blood, but nothing else. I went ahead next and just walked straight to where I saw him disappear, and after criss-crossing a bit found a good spot of blood, and then from there for 75 yards farther, it was a very good, constant blood trail, and the boar lay at the end. He was a real nice one, I'm real happy with him. I'll get a bunch of meat too.

A nice-size porker!

Well, this is the end of this Live Hunt. I hope you enjoyed it, and please join us for our next Live Hunt, starting on Wednesday, April 4, a bowhunt for Rio Grande Turkey and Wild Hogs near Uvalde, Texas.

Trip Notes
Our hunt takes place with Wildlife Systems, Inc. on the McLean Bowman Ranch in Dimmit County, Texas. The ranch is loaded with Hogs, Javelina, Whitetail Deer, Predators, and Turkey. This trip we're concentrating on Turkey.

The Bowman Ranch has a nice, comfortable ranch house. Very clean, comfortable accommodations. This hunt includes lodging and excellent food cooked by the ranch managers wife. They have a great walk-in cooler to take your animals to cool off. It's a great ranch, just watch out for rattlesnakes! If you'd be interested in setting up a hunt on the Bowman Ranch, contact Wildlife Systems, Inc., you can visit their web site at:

Equipment
I shoot a Martin Jaguar bow set at 70 lbs, Easton 3-60 ACC arrows, and Wasp 125 gr. SST Hammer broadheads. On this hunt I was wearing Predator Spring Green camo, as it blends in very well with the foliage in south Texas.

My shotgun is a Remington 870 Express 3-inch, and I'm shooting Remington 3-inch shells with 2 oz. of #6 shot. Worked very well for me last year on several birds, so I'm using it again.

I also used my Double Bull ICE Blind which I purchased from Michael Middleton at www.texasbowhunter.com and although I've only hunted from it a few times, I'm inclined to like it very much. I plan to be using it a lot in this year's hunting seasons.
