British Columbia Black Bear Live Bowhunt

Thursday A.M.
This morning we took a break after the last two long days. The evenings have been better anyway.

Thursday P.M.

This afternoon we hunted near the railroad again, since that's where we've been seeing most of the bears. We saw 9 total before dark, about half of which were shooters. The other hunter with us had 2 stalks but something went wrong each time and he wasn't able to get a shot. The other 3 hunters in camp have had multiple stalking opportunities almost every day of the hunt, but something always seems to go wrong and they don't get a shot.

I think it is an unwritten rule in this camp that no one gets a chance at a 2nd bear until the other hunters in camp have killed their 1st bear. That's been disappointing for me, as I've basically just been watching things since Monday, and I really would like to have redeemed myself from the ordeal earlier in the week with my 1st bear. I'd also have been more selective on what I shot with my 1st tag. With 3 hunters in camp who haven't killed a bear yet, though, it's not looking real likely that I'm going to be able to get back in the game. Anyone know any recipes for 2nd tag soup?

This may be the last day of my hunt, but check back tomorrow just in case I do go out one last time....

Trip Notes
This black bear bowhunt takes place in central British Columbia, in the Prince George area. I'll be hunting with Jeff Lander, owner of Primitive Outfitting. I've bowhunted with Jeff several times previously for mule deer in Alberta. He just aquired a new, 900 sq. mile outfitting area in British Columbia for black and grizzly bear and moose. This hunt will be 100% spot and stalk, which is the kind of method I really get excited about. The bears will have been out of hibernation for a few weeks by now and are very visible out eating new, green grass along old logging roads, railroad right of ways, and other areas open to sunlight. This time also should be during their rut. The scouting reports from Jeff have been very encouraging. They are seeing multiple bears just about every day and there has been no shortage of close encounters. I have 2 bear tags, and I hope to use them both!

Equipment
I'm shooting a Diamond Machete one cam bow set at 67 lbs., GoldTip XT Hunter 55/75 arrows, and Wasp SST Hammer 100 3-blade broadheads. I'm wearing a variety of camo on this hunt, but it is mostly Predator.
