Live Hunts - Arizona Archery Elk Hunt - September 27 - Day 6

Tuesday - September 27 - Day 6
Arizona Archery Elk Hunt

Tuesday P.M. Hunt
This evening we hunted we still-hunted through a bedding area near where we heard a few bugles last evening right before dark. Remember the bull from yesterday who had f on one side and nothing on the other? Well, we saw him again and got a better look at him. He has 6 on one side and a big drop main beam right beside his face on the other side. He must have been seriously injured while in velvet, I'm guessing. He had about 8 cows and calves with him, and they were slowly feeding towards their nighttime eating grounds. At this point we passed on the idea of trying a stalk on this bull. The end of the hunt is in sight, but with the close call we had with the nice 6 point yesterday, we weren't ready to end it with this bull. We walked parrallel to the group for awhile, hoping they might join up with some more elk, but they never did, and we never found any more that evening. Tomorrow morning we're going to hunt our 2nd ground blind again, the one we hunted yesterday morning.

Bruce checks out a very large rub. The tree was
worn pretty well in from all the rubbing.

Bruce looks at another rub. The end of his walking stick
points out limbs that were broken while the bull
rubbed this tree. Big bull.

Wednesday A.M. Hunt
It was nice and cool this morning, as we got to our ground blind at about f:00 a.m., like yesterday. We heard a few bugles, but didn't see any elk from the blind, where we saw over 20 yesterday, so it's obvious the hunter who came walking by yesterday morning boogered up the elk patterns, at least for a few days. We left the blind after about 2 q1/2 hours, and started towards their bedding areas to do some still-hunting. Right off the bat we saw 3 cows walking down a fence, and about the same time we heard what sounded very much like a hunter's bugle, so possibly the hunter from yesterday was hunting the area again, working with the wind at his back, spooking everything.

After that we walked through the area where we had heard the big bull bugling the morning before, and we saw a group of about a dozen cows/calves and 3 spike bulls, but they were on the move to their bedding areas, and weren't stopping. We still-hunted in a big circle back to the truck, but didn't see anything else this morning. We're planning to try a totally different area this evening.

This rub was very fresh - there were shavings all over at the base.

Check todays P.M. hunt out tomorrow on Day 7 of this Live Hunt. I apologize for the one day delay in making this update. We were considering moving to a different part of this unit and I did not have time to make the update that day. As it turned out we didn't move.
