Live Hunts - Alberta Mule Deer Archery Hunt - September 10 - Day 3

Wednesday - September 10 - Day 3
Alberta Mule Deer Bowhunt

Wednesday A.M.

This morning I hiked in to where I hunted on Wednesday morning and saw the nice buck in his bed. I got there in the dark and set-up overlooking where I saw him bedded on Monday. He never showed, nor did any other deer in that coulee. I sat there till 8:00 a.m. and then started hiking and spotting. I saw one doe and fawn, and then didn't see any other deer until about 10:15. I saw lots of sign and lots of places there should have been deer, but weren't. At 10:15 I saw a small 4x4 and a big 3x2 bedded in the shade of a hill. I sat down and started getting my spotting scope out to get a photo, but they wouldn't oblige me, they took off over the hill. Shortly before noon I met back at the truck with Murray, one of the guides, and Jim, another hunter. They had seen a large number of good bucks across the river and watched where some of them bedded down. We had a quick snack and drove to that side of the river. Continued below.....

Wednesday afternoon

We made it to the other side of the river and hiked in to where the first bucks were. It would take much too long to re-tell all the events of the afternoon, but I'll sum up. Murray and Jim had spotted 12 different bucks on the side of the river we were now on. Murray thought all but one would probably be P&Y+. 8 of them were in a bachelor group. Despite our best efforts, we never were able to put a stalk on, for various reasons. It had been over 2 hours since they had spotted the bucks and we got to their general area. Some of the bucks had just moved by that time, probably because of the sun, possibly because there was a goofball bowhunter walking around down there in blue jeans and a short-sleeved t-shirt. No camo at all, walking around like he was on a Sunday stroll. We did see a number of bucks when we got there, probably some of the same ones, but they weren't where they were "supposed" to be and when we saw them they were almost all running. There, that's about as short as I can sum up the afternoon. We'll probably be coming back here on Friday morning, after we give things a bit of time to "cool off".

Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in southern Alberta, Canada. We are hunting in Unit 148, about 60 miles north of Medicine Hat. Primitive Outfitting owns a house in the little town of Empress, Alberta, which is our base of operations. Primitive has access to numerous acres and different properties in not only Unit 148, but also a few others right here in this area. Outfitter Jeff Lander holds the only non-resident bow tags for these few units, so if you want to hunt here, Jeff Lander is your man.

I hunted with Jeff in the Fall of 2000 and was fortunate to take a nice Mulie buck with my bow. If you're interested in reading that Live Hunt, Click Here

The country here really varies. There are high desert plains, deep coulees, draws and serious canyons, and even some sandhills. My hunt will encompass various types of terrain in this area.
