Live Hunts - Alberta Mule Deer Archery Hunt - September 9 - Day 2

Tuesday - September 9 - Day 2
Alberta Mule Deer Bowhunt

Tuesday A.M.

The story of today's hunt was mostly lots of wind and spitting rain, and reduced deer activity. This morning I hunted some real different country from yesterday. I hunted some sandhills country. It was small rolling hills and draws, with a mixture of grasses and what they call "buckbrush". I glassed my way through a big section of sandhills in the first two hours of light, and all I saw was one forkhorn right at dawn. The wind was fairly howling all morning so I guess most of the deer were really laying up.

Some fresh tracks since the rain last night

After a few hours I came to an area where the habitat changed a bit. It was more flat, and there was a lot more buckbrush, which goes up to a few feet high. I tried doing some spotting in that area and it was pretty tough, as that brush was tall enough to completely conceal a bedded deer. It wasn't like the deep draws I hunted yesterday where the deer bedded more in the open. I ended up busting several bucks and does up out of the brush as I was walking along. There was a small forkhorn, a small 3x4 and a decent 4x4. The smaller bucks were in velvet and the 4x4 was already slick. There was a lot more deer sign in this area than the hills I was in to start out the morning. It was tough stalking and tough spotting though. The howling wind and spitting rain didn't help things out much.

Tuesday P.M.

This evening the wind was even worse, so we decided to stick close to camp and check out a few coulees near an alfalfa field and a wheat field, and right above the river.

where we saw the nice 3x3 this evening

Throughout the afternoon we saw about 10 deer in the distance, mostly does, fawns and small bucks. They were all down in the river bottom. We did see one nice buck. He was only a 3x3, but he had really good height and good mass. If he hadn't been on the other side of the river, one of us might have gone after him. We didn't see any deer activity at all up in the coulees this evening, all the deer were down in the bottoms. About an hour before dark it started raining pretty good so we came back early.

these trails were covered with deer tracks

Tomorrow morning we're going to hunt again where we hunted Monday morning.

Check back for tomorrow's update!

Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in southern Alberta, Canada. We are hunting in Unit 148, about 60 miles north of Medicine Hat. Primitive Outfitting owns a house in the little town of Empress, Alberta, which is our base of operations. Primitive has access to numerous acres and different properties in not only Unit 148, but also a few others right here in this area. Outfitter Jeff Lander holds the only non-resident bow tags for these few units, so if you want to hunt here, Jeff Lander is your man.

I hunted with Jeff in the Fall of 2000 and was fortunate to take a nice Mulie buck with my bow. If you're interested in reading that Live Hunt, Click Here

The country here really varies. There are high desert plains, deep coulees, draws and serious canyons, and even some sandhills. My hunt will encompass various types of terrain in this area.
