Live Hunts - Alberta Mule Deer Archery Hunt - October 17 - Day 2

Tuesday - October 17 - Day 2
Alberta Mule Deer Archery Hunt

Tuesday A.M.
This morning I was supposed to sit at the head of a draw leading into a deep series of canyons about 2 miles from the alfalfa field we hunted yesterday. We hunted here this morning because Jeff saw a ton of deer coming up out of these canyons late yesterday evening heading to the alfalfa. Jeff told me where to go this morning but I got turned around in the dark, so I ended up someplace else. I still ended up seeing deer all morning. Started seeing them just a few minutes after shooting light and was still seeing them when I left at 9:30. I saw probably half a dozen different groups of deer throughout the morning, including 2 groups with good bucks. One had a great buck and a bunch of does. The other was a group of 5 bucks, one of which was a stud. They never came closer than about 200 yards, though. They spent 2 hours fighting each other, rubbing trees, and munching on grass. Eventually I lost sight of them, guessing they had gone to bed. I had does and fawns from 10 - 100 yards from me a good part of the morning, just milling around, feeding, and eventually bedding down. This evening I'm going to try and get at the head of the draw where I was supposed to be this morning, and cut them off as they're coming to the alfalfa.

Tuesday P.M. Hunt
Jeff dropped us off early today so that we would have plenty of time to find a spot with at least a little cover and get set for the evening run. I spent about an hour trying to find a good spot that would give me some cover and with the wind right as well. It was tough, barren as it is out here. I finally found a spot that would allow me to draw my bow for the most part unseen.

About 4:30 I saw one lone buck that looked pretty nice. He was on the other side of the canyon though, and I didn't see him again after I lost sight of him. A few minutes later from the same area I saw 2 bucks, one of which was a stud. Deep forks, heavy mass, tall rack. Unfortunately, he also was across the canyon probably 1/2 mile away, and since I was set up in a good spot where Jeff had seen lots of deer coming and going I stayed put. I didn't see him again. Over the next little while I saw a few does and fawns, and a lone whitetail doe, but no bucks, and nothing real close. As it got dark I walked up to a little vantage and in short order saw about 40 deer in the distance. They had gone well behind me, on another trail, closer to one of the other hunters, but not close enough for a shot. We're going to hunt over there in the morning, me out of a Double Bull Ice Blind and the other hunter out of a pit blind.

Check back tomorrow!
