Live Hunts - 2004 North Texas Live Turkey Hunt

April 18, 2004 - Day 2
North Texas Live Turkey Hunt

Sunday A.M.

Today was a very tough day for turkey hunting. The wind was gusting at up to 30 mph and while I did hear a few gobbles on roost, it was pretty tough getting them to work to the calls. I was hunting a new area and wasn't real sure about where to set up when I heard them gobbling on roost. So, I set up where I thought was the best spot, hoping they'd fly down in that direction. I was wrong. I'm not sure which direction they flew down, but it wasn't in my direction. Just like yesterday morning, they didn't gobble one time after flydown. I hunted for a few hours and then called it a day. The wind was awful and the birds weren't gobbling. I took a few "scenery" photos on the way back to the car, seen below.

Trip Notes
This Live Hunt takes place on the ranch that a close friend of mine has near Albany, Texas, in Shackelford County, in the Rolling Plains region of Texas. It's not too far from historic Texas ranches like the Nail Ranch and the Stasney Cook Ranch. It's hilly country, and most of it doesn't look at first glance much like turkey country, with lots of low brush and mesquite trees.
