Last year we were really into the elk and had about 70% shooting opportunity overall on our bull elk hunts and 100% on the cow-only elk hunts. In Idaho we have licenses available for bull or cow elk with my outfitters quota (no draw necessary). The herd makeup is 20 bulls per 100 cows, with about half being mature bulls. What this means is that one out of every five elk is a bull, and one out of every two bulls is a mature bull (not just a spike). You have a real chance of seeing something besides cows and spikes like in many other elk areas. In Idaho we have several elk hunting options to choose from, rifle, archery, or black powder. Utah also has some outstanding elk hunting for mature bulls during the rut. Because the hunting is so good, we recommend that every one put in for this draw in January. We can put you on our mailing list so that you don't forget to apply. This hunt gives you the best chance at a quality bull for the best price I've seen anywhere. Remember, you can't draw if you don't apply. Each year you'll receive a preference point which increases your odds of drawing the next year. Just do it. If you don't draw and you still want to hunt, you can switch to one of our other quality elk hunts in Idaho or to a Utah CWMU Ranch hunt.
We run 100% success on the cow elk hunts in Utah. It's a draw hunt, but the state has two draws to sell all the permits, and we usually have ranch permits available in case you don't draw. Be in the first draw (in June) and you should get a permit. Leftover tags are drawn after that. Normally we see from 10 to 100 head of elk per day. We have actually seen over 1,000 head in one day while hunting. These hunts are very affordable, you see a lot of animals, and you should take meat home. Hunts are available from September through January. You can also hunt cougar at the same time during Dec. and Jan. for an additional fee. |
