Idaho & Utah Mule Deer Hunting

Trophy Mule Deer are one of the most sought after species in North America. Bearpaw Outfitters specializes in Mule Deer hunting. By hunting the best areas of Idaho and Utah we are able to offer some outstanding Mule Deer hunts with fully guided or unguided trips available. Best of all we have licenses available for most of the hunts.

1. Southeast Idaho Trophy Mule Deer
Our Southeast Idaho hunting area consistently produces some very large heads, and every year we see our biggest bucks on these Idaho hunts. Average young bucks run 16"-24", with older bucks running 25"-30", and even a few monster 30"-40" racks are taken in our region nearly every year. A quick look at the record books will confirm the quality of the horn growth in this area. The Mule Deer here have extremely good genetics and the soil is rich with minerals that promote horn growth. Horns grow heavy and high, and there is an unusually high ratio of non-typical heads. Obviously, we can't guarantee you'll see one of the really large bucks, but as you know, in order to kill big bucks you have to hunt where big bucks grow. We have our camps located to hunt the best areas in the high mountains and on some of the best private ranches available in the Southeast Idaho area, and we'll do our best to get you that shot at one of the big bucks of this region. The country is beautiful and fun to hunt. Elevation in most of the hunt areas runs from 5000 to 8000 feet. There are hunting areas that have easier rolling terrain that's easy to get around in, and there are areas with steep rugged rocky terrain for the hunters that want to hunt the tougher areas. Density of the cover varies but it is not nearly as thick as more northern areas, and it is not wide open either like the plains or high desert, the mix of evergreen trees, aspen trees, maple, juniper, and sage, is actually just about right to provide plenty of cover for the animals, yet open enough to do a lot of glassing and spotting for game.

The last few years the deer numbers have been increasing and so have our success rates. Mule deer shooting opportunity ran about 70% for rifle and about 50% for archery here last fall, but will most likely be even higher this fall. Due to the increase in our deer populations, this year Fish & Game has expanded the Southeast Idaho mule deer season. Archery deer and elk season runs August 30 to Sept 30, Rifle deer runs October 5-31, and the Muzzleloader deer hunt runs Oct 10-24, with two new areas open during the mule deer rut in November . Best of all, Bearpaw Outfitters has an outfitters quota for licenses in this area, you don't have to draw for your licenses. Most other big buck areas are draw areas in other states. If you aren't lucky enough to draw, you don't get to hunt. But, in Idaho you are guaranteed a license with our outfitters quota, and you can plan on going hunting if you book your hunt with Bearpaw Outfitters. Now is the time to hunt mule deer in Southeast Idaho.

During the Mule Deer hunt you can also hunt elk, moose, or cougar for free, Bearpaw Outfitters will give you the extra opportunity. Just purchase the elk tag and you can hunt cow elk for free during your mule deer hunt from Oct 15-24, or you can hunt bull elk from Oct 26-31 during your deer hunt. If you apply and draw a moose tag, you can also hunt moose for free during you deer hunt from Aug 30 to Nov 23. The odds of drawing an Idaho Shiras Moose tag are better than in any other state, so be sure and apply for the moose, this is an extraordinary opportunity. Plus, if you see a cougar and still have a deer tag, you can shoot it and put your deer tag on it.

Idaho now has a program whereby all leftover non-resident deer and elk tags go on sale as second tags beginning Sept 1st, until sold out. You could purchase an additional deer or elk tag and hunt two deer or two elk on your trip, we will not charge you any extra for that either. Or, you could put your second deer tag on a cougar if you see one, and still have one deer tag left to hunt deer with. No other state offers the same great opportunities that Idaho does, and at Bearpaw Outfitters you can take advantage of all these opportunities at no additional charge by us, all you do is purchase the necessary licenses. We do not charge you any extra to hunt the additional animals and our hunting fees are very reasonably priced. Where else can you hunt trophy mule deer, bull elk, cougar, and moose for such a reasonable price?

2. Utah CWMU Ranch Mule Deer
We offer hunts on Northern Utah private ranches that have high populations of Mule Deer and shooting opportunity runs close to 100% on average size deer every year. This is a fun hunt with real high success, everyone has a good time on this hunt and sees lots of game. Last year shooting opportunity ran 97% overall, on a mixed bag of bucks up to 24". Most hunters get opportunities at 3x3 or 4x4 bucks with 15"-24" spreads. Because the deer population is so high here, this is our best hunt for the hunter who wants the best chance to bag a buck. On the guided hunts we usually see 10 to 100 deer daily, with 1-10 bucks sighted most days. Bagging a buck is mainly dependent on your shooting ability. Most shooting will be from 50 to 300 yards. Because these ranches are so much fun to hunt, re-bookings are higher than ever so give us a call early to reserve one of these hunts. We have a limited number of landowner tags available, you do not need to draw a tag. Best of all it is during September while the weather is real comfortable.

3. Utah Limited-Draw Mule Deer
Bearpaw Outfitters also hunts a limited draw area in Utah that has a growing deer population with excellent shooting opportunity on better than average mule deer bucks. This area was closed for three seasons to let the deer recover, now there is limited hunting by drawing only. This area now has the highest success rate in Utah and the best buck to doe ratios in the state. Hunting for mature bucks is excellent, with a good chance to see bucks in the 22" to 30"+ class. There were about a half dozen bucks in the 30"+ size taken in this area last year. You should ask to be on our mailing list to put in for this hunt. Then, if you are not drawn, and still want to hunt, we can take you on one of our other mule deer hunts. We urge you to apply for these permits, remember, you can't draw if you don't apply. Each year you'll receive a preference point which increases your odds of drawing the next year. Just do it. If you don't draw, and still want to hunt, I'll switch you to a Utah CWMU Ranch Hunt or an Idaho Mule Deer Hunt. Let us know now, that you want on our list of applicants to apply for this hunt next year, applications must be in by January for this hunt.
