Outfitter Review: Stricker Outfitting Ltd. - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Charlie Stricker

Hunter: Rene W. Cadene

Animals Hunted: White tail-Mule deer

I made a good recommendation for Charlie since he asked me to help him promote his business before I even hunted with him. Me my dad and my wife ate 6 tags on a ten day hunt. Charlie was drunk most of the time and our camp and his knowledge of deer horrible. Do not hunt with this outfit. I was taken for a ride and feel bad about recomending him before even hunting there. The peace region is great deer country but this outfitter has no friends and most landowners, trappers and even the game warden dislike Charlie.

Went with my 71 year old father during a Nov.1st hunt, which was bitter cold. Home for the week was at the Lucasia Ranch . You could not ask for nicer people the made all of us very comfortable and really went out of their way. There was some confusion as my father and I thought we would be the only ones there, but we were joined by another. But everything worked out fine ! I harvested a 185+ buck and my father scored on a real nice wide 3x4. And that "other person " is name is Angel and if you look in the brochure he is pictured in there as well as I am !this was a 2003 hunt and was very good to me I saw my father get, most likely, his last buck but also made a friend in Angel. We just got off the phone and are trying to get our 2005 hunts togather

Bear, wolf and fishing are an added bonus on the hunt. This place will capture your heart with it's beautiful lakes, northern lights, and big moose.

Outfitter Review: Awsome Access Alberta - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Ken Baker

Hunter: Skip Brickell

Animals Hunted: Moose

Just returned from Sept 04 Moose hunt to Northern Alberta. Really great experience. Ken Baker runs a small personal operation that gets you out away from the locals and natives. This was a 2x1 hunt with only two hunters per camp. This was my first experience hunting moose and I can say that you Turkey hunters out there would love it. Very, very similar to the way you hunt Turkeys. Look for promising areas and then call. This is not the kind of hunt where you see lots of moose, but when you see one or get one to answer you're call, you usually nail him. Ken did a superb job calling my moose in while it was with a cow. This is pretty hard to do. This was a fly-in hunt on a lake 150 miles from Ft Mcmurray. No access other than float plane. We had 4 hunters and went 3 for 4 on 45 inch + bulls. My bull was around 47in and had great mass. All the bulls weighed over 1400 lbs. Ken really busts his butt to put you in front of a good bull and this is a real quality hunt. I can't over emphasize the importance of hunting where the locals and natives don't access. Also, be prepared for the volume of meat, 900 lbs of de-boned meat is quite a pile if you're used to deer or elk. This is not a big operation and you're not a number, I really, really enjoyed this trip. Please give me a call for any questions you might have.

Outfitter Review: Charlie Stricker - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Charlie Stricker

Hunter: Rene Cadene

Animals Hunted: whitetailed deer

This is a response to the report Martin Greeley posted here. Greenley was very good and did really put forth the effort and I felt bad that he didn't get his buck so I offered him a half price hunt for 2004 But I was dissapointed that he sent in a very distorted report. "Saw very few deer--I do know one day he did not see a deer out of his stand and that is bad but does happen to any deer hunter anywhere but I remember how bad I felt for him staying in that stand all day and not seeing nothing. The guides name is Cole Patmore 20 years old and as sharp as they come he saw a big track in the area where he had Martin on stand and that's why he left him there another day, when I found out Martin had seen nothing one day I moved him to a place where he saw 20 deer whitetails one morn he should have stayed there but how do you know I didn't know that he had seen 20 deer that morn if I had I would have left him there because it is a very good spot and there was a big buck there also we had seen it a few days previous.Found out guide lost his access he makes it sound like we didn't have places to hunt the truth is we have oodles of places probably have 40 stands set up to useand thousands of square miles of country I think Martin sat in 7 or 8 stands in the 10 days he hunted.what he refers to as a dumpy cold trailer is a well site or contractors type of trailer which was clean had a nice little wood stove that keeps the place toasty warm and a propane stove to cook on it has bunk beds in it so plenty of room for him and Cole it has plenty of cupboards and a sink and a table with bench seats like a restaurant. I thought its not a bad set up the reason I used it is put the hunters close to the area where they would hunt to save that long drive morning and nite the hunters that hunted there the previous hunt one took a 160 buck WT and the other guy wounded what he thought was a 160 buck and saw several other good sized bucks. He makes it sound like Cole was real incompetent the kid is a real good hunter and I get plenty of complements from other hunters on Cole's performanceI get hunters asking if they come back if they can have Cole for a guide He is a good hunter enthusiastic personable likeable good at caping can fix any thing that breaks down he may lack a little in cooking skills and we were steady taking precooked stuff over there that Georgina was cooking up like pies cakes cookies banana bread stew chili I know they had bacon and eggs and home made bread that Georgina had sent over. We are talking about and hours drivefrom the house to their camp. Then when martin was here at the house he commented on how good the groceries were and how good a cook Georgina wasthen he turns around and says the food was poor I hope he is referring to Cole's cooking and not Georgina's.At the Lodge here hunters have their own private room with bathroom and shower facilities a large sitting area with satellite TV and a VHS player and a fridgefor their beer there is a nice big wood stove with plenty of wood and electric heat to supplement .Experience of other personnel he says not sure I guess that s would include me as I was running the hunt and was on top of all aspects at all times I thought I did a pretty decent job I didn't put Martin on a big deer but every hunter has to realize that that happens sometimes and like I said to start with Martin was the only hunter all fall that didn't have a chance .some hunters are not good in the stands they are steady fidgeting and clearing their throat and you know that a big buck isn't going to show up on their doorstep. But I really thought that Martin was a pretty good sitterThe part about the truck showing up at his stand there is truth in that and it's another outfitter that did that on purpose one time to aggravate us now Martin made it sound like there were several instances like that but the truth is there was only one and I have to address that."Charlie StrickerMyself, I have talked to many hunters who did the same hunt and all were extremely pleased. Talking to biologists in Alberta they say this region has been seeing higher numbers of quality deer every year.

Animals Hunted: Moose

Eric was late in picking us in High Level, we had booked a fly in hunt but at the last minute Eric changed it to a 4x4 hunt. His guides as well as himselve have never hunted the area before. We had to set up the camp for him, he had no cook,, had no idea where to look for any Moose, we just drove and walked around for days without any sigh. The area he hunts has alot of resident indian pressure and I mean alot! There were several days were he left and went to town to get food and supplies leaaving us a guide short. He also left to pick up the next client and placed him in camp early thus giving up hunting time for us. I have complained and asked for a refund and complained to the APOS to no avail. This guy should not be an outfitter!!

Hunted over thanksgiving 2003 for 10 days. First five days saw very few deer. Last 5 days saw a few more deer but no shooters. Found out later that the guide lost access to hunting land before I arrived and quickly put me in an untested area in a dumply cold trailer with a kid guide who could not even make coffee.Last 5 days he moved me to main lodge (very nice) but put me in local areas that were over hunted. The locals hate him so they would drive trucks by my stand to scare deer away. This could be dangerous. $4000 dollars, 10 eleven hour days in very cold temps and a bunch of bull to show for it.

Animals Hunted: Bear

Dale Johnson did a great job of getting me my bears. Alberta has a two bear limit. On day one I passed a small bear and then harveted a very nice brown color phase. On day two I harested a beautiful cinnnamon bear that is borderline P&Y. Not bad for six hours of hunting!! Dale takes only 4 bear hunters per year, so he does everything he can to make sure you are on active baits. The camp is a tent camp, but is very comfortable with very good food. I would reccomend!

Outfitter Review: Legend Outfitting - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Mike White

Hunter: Vincent Vaughan

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

Mike White is everything you want in an outfitter/guide for black bear over bait. There's not an aspect of this hunt he doesn't have down. He only allows 6 hunters per YEAR for black bear and treats every single one as special clients. As far as bears, his quantity and quality is second to none. I personally saw 19 bear (one an 8 footer) in the 5 days I hunted (took second bear on 5th night and didn't go out 6th night). My hunting partner saw same amount. Between the 2 of us we harvested 3 bears. Both of my bears were cinnamon - one squaring 6'6" the other 6'10" and my partner shot a P&Y black that squared 7"1". Unfortunately, my partner put a good shot on his second bear (a blonde) but after tracking for many hours, bear was lost in a swamp. He's the best skinner I've ever seen and makes sure your bear hide(s) is well preserved for trip home. Accomodations are great - you stay in his home and feel every bit a guest every minute you are there. Food is great - like eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner at home every night without having to do the dishes! If you're looking for a top notch guide with personalized service unmatched, Mike White is your guide.

Outfitter Review: Alberta Trophy Hunts - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Stan Reiser

Hunter: Bruce

Animals Hunted: Deer, Moose

My idea of hunting is not setting in ditches on paved roads waving at the homeowner as she gets her mail in the morning. Chasing deer with your vechicle....NO Thanks. A week of hunting and no blind to set in? My warmth depended on how much snow I cleared from the ground before I set down. I complained to Stan that maybe he should have more control over his guides. Ask the hunters how the hunt is going. Stan's reply: His area is too big to keep track of his guides. Thanks Stan, I just spent over $4,000 so I could chase deer down and hunt on paved roads. And no blinds to set in? I thought it was illegal to hunt and shoot down roads? This camp is all about Money and a job next year for the guides. Save your money and book with someone else. Alberta Trophy hunts web page says it all. over 30 plus hunters a year and 3 deer on there web page. NOT HAPPY!

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

I took a 133 buck with a forked brow tine. Quite honestly, I probably could have done better and it was my fault because the buck I took just plain fooled me; I thought he was 150 or better.Nevertheless, he is a handsome animal and I'm happy with him.You hunt on stands over cut lines and have from 3 to 5 seconds to size up an animal and make your decision, but that's hunting and in no way am I being critical of the outfitter. One of the guys in our group took a "slammer" that scored 163 and interestingly, he had no idea how big the deer really was when the shot was taken! As far as the experience of the guides, it's hard to say because they merely drop you off and tell you to give them a call if you get too cold, or take an animal. But you are given a satellite phone and a "body bag" in the event that it is really cold (in the morning it was around -5F and would go to 10 or 15F during the day). But having said all this, someone does some good scouting because the stands are well positioned and everyone saw game.Accomodations and food were fine and more than satisfactory. All in all, a good hunting trip and well worth the money.

Outfitter Review: Savage Encounters Inc. - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Chad Lenz

Hunter: John and Tanya Vanden Dungen

Animals Hunted: Whitetail/Mule deer

We had booked this hunt a year previous, intending to bring our young sons as they had advertised contained wild boar and sheep hunts in addition to the deer hunts. In addition , the advertisement was that we would see enough animals to have a selective opportunity at a decent buck. As circumstances do change sometimes, we did not end up taking the boys along. We were REALLY looking forward to our adult only vacation. From the start this hunt was a disaster. The day we arrived we were greeted with "What are you doing here, you're not supposed to be here till next week." It was not until we produced documentation proving we were in the right that they accepted our existance in camp. Even then we were treated as though it was our fault we were even there. The guide we were given had even been told that we had shown up early. We had chosen Alberta because we wished to spot and stalk, and/or still hunt rather than sit on stand over bait in another province. We had brought our own pop-up blinds to give us flexibility, and thank goodness we did because that is all we used. We were put on stands overlooking cut lines in small timber blocks in a far from remote area. We were assured that "a big deer had been seen in the area." I was put on a cut line near the local dump. It stunk. When my husband questioned the locality I was moved to a line looking down upon an intersection on a main highway a mere 600 yards away. Safe. Not. In all I spent 9 sessions on stand never seeing a deer. My husband saw all of 4 deer in his sets, two of which were very small bucks. After my husband complained to Chad that we had actually paid for a combination MULE DEER/whitetail hunt we were taken glassing an area that looked to be good muley habitat. This was only after our guide got permission from the outfitter, Chad to go there after he and his client had left. You can guess the results. In the week we were there 8 hunters took a grand sum of 3 deer. One average mule deer which was shot while standing on a road, and a reasonable whitetail (135) by road hunting. The only deer shot from one of their prepared stands was a small 8 point. The owner, Chad managed to get away to the property adjoining camp and shoot a better buck than any of the clients took that week. It was squirreled away in the shed quietly. All in all it was a waste of our time and secondarily our money. It appeared to us that most of our stand sights were not pre-scouted. Others got the impression that their stands had been well used in previous weeks. What was advertised was no where near what we or any of the hunters there experienced. We were told over and over "Oh, the deer just aren't moving." This was in the week of 3 different weather patterns, including -20 for 2 days in the middle of the rut. The deer taken had swollen necks and a couple of hunters had actually seen a buck chasing does. We got the impression that the area is not heavily populated with deer and as witnessed by all in camp there was a lot of local hunting pressure. We saw more bucks in the first hour driving home south of the hunting area than we saw in a whole weeks hunting.A great website, don't get fooled by it. Please feel free to contact us for more details is you so desire.Tanya and John Vanden Dungen

I got to hunt 1 afternoon for whitetail and saw 3 bucks 1 of them in the 150 range, but couldn't get a shot.Out of 4 of us 3 mule deer were taken with bow a 174 1/2, 178 1/2 and a 200 3/8. Chad has a good camp. He and his guides have hunted this country for many years and know the patterns and habits of the game species they hunt. Unfortunately, the weather was unseasonably warm the week of my hunt. It was also full moon. In spite of these handicaps I saw quite a bit of game including 4 nice mature bull elk which could have been harvested if I had a tag. Thanks to the perseverance of my guide Stacy I harvested a nice mature mule deer on the last morning of my hunt. I was very pleased with the hunt and plan to hunt again with Chad and Stacy.

Animals Hunted: Bear

This was my first ever big game hunt in Canada. I have hunted whitetail in the midwest for several years. Although this was my first guided hunt for a bear, it was not my first guided hunt. For nearly 10 years I have hired guides throughout the US for duck and goose hunting. Even though it is not big game, the emphasis is placed highly on the guide service. Mother nature plays an important factor in a successful hunt and a good guide service is there to balance the playing field. I interviewed 4 different guide services before selecting Chad and Savage Encounters. I had taken up archery in December of 2002 and decided that in late May '03 I would try and take a black bear. The guides, knowing this was my first archery hunt, gave me great advice, but did not treat me like a novice hunter. The camp layout and facilities were first class, especially our cook Rebecca. Every day I had bears enter my area which made for great entertainment. When I took my bear on the second evening of the hunt I could hardly contain my excitement and the guides of Savage Encounters were just as excited for me. The guides worked extremely hard to make sure that everyone in camp was able to take at least one bear. Two of the gentlemen I met in camp had hunted with another outfitter the previous year and could not get over the difference in professionalism and accomodations compared to the year earlier. I would recommend this operation to anyone who wants to enjoy a well run bear camp with terrific personnel and a great chance a taking a trophy black bear.

I have been on 2 hunts with SEI and had a great time on both. Our first year, my husband hunted elk/mule deer and I hunted mule deer only. We had a great time HUNTING. We experienced terrific terrain, wonderful company and great "hard" hunting. I was unsuccessful that year but my husband harvested a nice Elk on our last day. Our guides, including Chad gave 110% the entire time. Our second hunt was awesome! I shot a really nice moose and mule deer, while my husband was unsuccessful(due mostly to weather)..that is why they call it hunting. It's not shooting. The joy and excitement of the hunt is not knowing and working hard to find your trophy. If it were all guaranteed, we would all have the cover of Trophy Hunter magazine. SEI does a GREAT JOB! We have great memories to relive and new friends like Chad and our guide Shawn to relive them with.

I have hunted with Savage Encounters twice in the last year, and I am planning on more hunts in the future. I can't find anything negative to say about their operation so I will discuss the good things. My good friend, Travis Peterson, and I went Black Bear hunting with Savage in May of 2002. Even though we had terrible weather, both of us took nice sized bear. It was a great hunt and the accommodations were great. They really make you feel at home with a very nice hunting lodge, good food and great company. In January 2003 I went on a wolf hunt at Savage Encounters. Savage had done a lot of hard work setting bait piles and hunting shacks up. I saw 14 coyotes and 1 wolf by the 4th day of the hunt. I shot a black colored wolf on the 4th day that weighed approximately 140 lbs. This wolf ended up scoring as the # 15 wolf skull in the world (SCI scoring system). This was the most exciting thing that I have ever done hunting. It was unbelievable!!! I have been in many newspapers and magazines with this wolf, and even wrote a story about it for a magazine. I have always wanted to be in magazines, etc. and Savage Encounters helped me get there. The best thing that Savage Encounters did was on the day after I shot my wolf. We took almost a full day to get to a scenic location with the mountains in the background so I could have some great pictures. The pictures are awesome, and make me think of that day whenever I look at them. A couple of my friends went on a Black Bear hunt in May of 2003 and came home with 2 bear, and one was over 400 pounds. They were very thrilled with the hunt, and plan on a return trip to hunt with Savage again. Savage Encounters is a great operation all the way around. If you are a serious hunter and want to find a serious guide you should check Savage Encounters out.

Chad Lenz is a very serious hunter and runs a great camp! His area has lots of deer, and he has permission to hunt quite a bit of private ground exclusively. Although I did not kill a deer on this hunt I saw several very nice bucks and had I gotten a break or two would have had a chance to arrow a dandy whitetail buck. I'll be back!

I had a great week. It was an unforgettable hunt of a lifetime. I was able to harvest an almost perfectly symmetrical eight point whitetail. I made some great friends. In fact, I'm going back again this year with one of them. I saw game every day, including: whitetail, mule deer, elk, and moose. I have the pictures posted in my office and reccommend Chad and Savage Encounters to everyone. Guides, camp staff, accomodations were all top notch. Can't wait to go back.

Outfitter / Owner: Chad Lenz

Hunter: Mr. Stacy D. Green

Animals Hunted: Wild Boar, Bear, Wolf

WOW! What a great way to take a vacation! Both myself and my best friend have hunted with Savage, and let me tell you... Things could not have been better for both of us. Adam (my best friend) hunted with Chad (Savage) Lenz in May of 2003 for black bear. With more than 40 sightings over 2 weeks, and as many as 15 bear spotted in one day Adam was able to take his first big game species at his liesure. He was able to really enjoy his hunt as a true vacation and adventure. As for myself, I chose to hunt wild boar. Taking a 220lb San Diego "Razor Back" after 6 hours of stalking. Chad (our guide) was incredible, he led us through some very difficult forest and swampy areas, but delivered. As president of "Big Game Canada" (www.biggame.ca) I can assure you that Chad and his company "Savage Encounters" are outfitters with integrity. I've visited his outfit on many occasions to gather film footage for some of our projects. I've seen many hunters go home with bragging rights as well as empty handed, but none could honestly go home feeling short changed. Chad makes no false pomises, and delivers exactly what he claims. "A quality hunt, with quality guides and quality accomodations"Just a side note... Recent reviews on this website were submitted which suggest that Savage Encounters is less that the best choice for an outfitter. Interestingly enough, I happened to have been present during those gentlemen's hunts (we were filming hunts for a video project) and I find it interesting that both of the hunters who submitted the reviews failed completely to mention the incredibly poor weather during their hunts, but are quick to mention "hunting pressure" and "Private Ranches". In fairness, there ARE NO PRIVATE HUNTING RANCHES in Alberta which offer native big game. In Alberta it is illegal to hunt captive big game which are native to the province. As well, it is illegal (in Alberta) to extend "exclusive access" to individual hunters or outfitters on private land. I KNOW for a fact, that Chad Lenz has NEVER claimed exclusive access to "Private Ranches". And like any reputable Outfitter, Savage Encounters does NOT guaranty hunts. No one can. I find it truely amazing that someone can claim so many negative things without being fair. Truth be known, both of those hunters got more than they were promised, and far less BS than they claimed. I know, because I was there with my video camera.

Chad runs a good outfit, with good guides. To me the biggest problem was not having enough private land to hunt. Myself and a friend had to deal with local hunters on numerous occasions, riding ATV's by, walking by, conducting drives in the bush that we were hunting, etc... Chad advertises 100% shot opportunity at a 140 class deer. This was not true while I was hunting with him. In the 9 days that I was there, 2 whitetail bucks were killed, both about 130 BC. This was out of ten hunters. I have no doubt that there are big deer in some of his area's. For the amount of money it cost, I expected more and better quality of deer.

I hunted spring bear with Dean in 2001. There were 6 hunters in our camp. Four of us tagged out with two over 6'bears each and one guy shot one 7 footer and passed up another like him. Only one bow hunter did not take any bears and in my oppinion it was probably his fault. The food on that trip was unbealivably good. In Sept. I went back for moose and nailed a nice 50" bull. There were 6 hunters in camp and we all saw moose. Three, including mine were killed. Everyone saw at least one moose. Even though that camp was way, way in there, the food was still good.

This was my second time hunting with Jack. He runs a frist class operation and has it all. section on section of private land access to book class muledeer/antelope and whitetail. He has great guides that can spot deer with unbelievable canny. Muledeer hunting is done in the open plains by spot and stalk. It is the greatest way on earth to hunt muleys. Be ready for a long belly crawl and shots out to 60 yards. your heart will race when he decoys an antelope and he comes running to you. I missed my antelope this year but did take a 5x4 muley that will went 163 in velvet. I took a 5x4 that went 178 the last time. these are great bowhunts. The rifle hunters have a 3 to 4 year waiting list it is that good. He does not even have a website but can be found in the alberta guides book.

Hunted some with this guide previous year on moose hunt. He tries to overcome poor scouting & prep work before the hunt by walking a lot looking for animals. He knows the area in general, but was busy building a house and didn't get ready to hunt this past year. Didn't have any trespass permissions with land owners prior to hunt. He was calling landowners or stopping by their houses throughout the hunt to ask permission. All the animals seen were 2000 yds +. Never had a single opportunity for any legal animal much less the trophy quality I was hunting for.Accomodations were the only high point of hunt staying in a bed & breakfast owned by outfitter's parents. Nice people and his mother is excellent cook. Would make a great trip for sightseeing or snowmobiling, but wouldn't go on another hunt with this guide.

Was outfitter first year in business, though he had been a guide for a number of years previously. The hunt was late in October and almost missed rut. I shot a small moose on guide's call on first day. Very disappointing 26" spread, not at all trophy quality. Outfitter did try to make it right by offering free hunt if I wanted to return the next year. It was my first moose hunt and I was looking for a nice bull at least 35 to 40" which outfitter assured me were plentiful in area. Two other hunters in camp, one shot moose on first day about 35". Other hunter never saw anything. We later figured out rut ended on first day or so of hunt and bulls never came in to calls later. I took a small mulie buck about 21" - 4x4 late in hunt. Never saw anything larger. Hunted hard for whitetails but never saw anything.Accomodations were adequate, but would have not been if weather had not been fair. I stayed in wall tent but other hunters stayed in camp trailers. Outfitter did cooking. It was okay and filling, but nothing to brag about.Overall, hunting was poor, area was spectacular scenery abutting Banff National Park, guides and outfitter were good hunting and camp companions making for a good hunting experience, but not a hunt for a trophy quality animal.

Outfitter / Owner: Ken Steinhauer

Hunted with him in fall 2000. Takes too many people for the 10 day hunts and only has a few decent places. NO central camp where everyone can see what the others kill. Spreads everyone out all over Alberta to whereever he draws tags and puts them in local houses. He has about 6 favorite return hunters that get to hunt the good ground and sends the new guys to crown land north of Edmonton in Moose country. My brother and I saw 10 moose and 7 deer between us on a 10 day hunt. Another group of guys from New Jersey got stuck in horrible accomodations in an old house and didn't see anything either. 0ne buck walked out on day 7 of the hunt and I shot him. He scored 140. He was the only damn buck I saw in 10 days of hunting. I saw 3 deer and my brother saw 4 TOTAL! We were covered with locals walking thru the woods and driving up to the deer stands with trucks and 4 wheelers during the hunt. To make matters worse Ken never called or came around after he took our money the first day at the airport. He sent my brother and I to a house up north and another two guys with a guide up north that had bad luck. His six favorite return hunters all killed deer, but the 4 extras got screwed! He is by far the WORST Outfitter I have hunted with in the past 8 years! The second 10 day hunt had too many hunters and ended up sending two guys with another outfitter up in Loc Labish that saw a lot better deer and they shot 165-172 BC deer. So if you want to go to Alberta you should check around cause all of his references are the ones who get to go to the good places not the ones who get the shaft..... In 2000 I know of 6 other guys that went there other than my brother and I and they got the shaft too.

Animals Hunted: Elk, Mule Deer, White tail, Bear, Moose, wolf

I wish I could be the first to post a good review on SEI but, sorry to say, I cannot. My primary goal and desire for the hunt was to score on a nice bull elk. Chad Lenz, owner of Savage Encounters, Inc. (SEI) offered a good deal for my desired elk hunt and gave me every indication that he could provide the hunt I was looking for. He said I could expect to see elk daily and have a couple of opportunities to take a 5 or 6-point bull elk of good size (advertised 100% success expectation). He stated that I’d be hunting on private ranches for most of my hunt. Almost nothing could have been further from the truth. What I experienced was a very poor hunt with very few cow/calf elk sightings on only the first 2 days of an 8-day hunt. I never saw a legal bull. And, I encountered many other local hunters applying very heavy hunting pressure on all public and so called private hunting grounds. The hunting terrain was very mundane with section roads and flat lands covering most the zone I was hunting (nothing remote). This elk hunt was a total disappointment and I feel I was strongly deceived by SEI, and cheated. On one lucky day of the hunt I did score on a nice trophy mule deer. My guide, Stacy Powell was great and worked hard but couldn’t produce an elk that wasn’t accessible. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. Don’t be mislead by SEI. A guided hunt on heavily hunted public grounds is what I sadly experienced. Check out the full story at SavageEncounters.FreeServers.com

Greg Kristoff and his family just purchased this outfit in 2001.They were still in the process of taking complete control of the operations when I hunted with them last fall. The area they hunt is off-limits to motorized vehicles[no ATVs]. A comforable tent camp is located 12 miles by horse back from the trail head in a beautiful wilderness area. Each morning we rode our horses from camp one to two hours before daylight into prime moose areas and either glassed or called for moose.I was bow hunting and holding out for a large bull. I saw 13 bulls and 17 cows during my hunt.Although I missed the only shot I took with my bow, 12 of the bulls I saw were in easy rifle range. The two rifle hunters they had last season took large bulls within the third day of their hunt. Gregs two sons Corey and Ryan were our guides and his wife Dianna was our excellent cook. They all went out of their way to make sure we had a enjoyable experience. Now that they have complete control of the outfit things will only be better with the new equipment and improvements they have planned. I would highly recommend them for a true wilderness adventure and hunting trip.

You should be able to take a coyote (with a gun) on the hunt if you want. You hunt 10s of thousands of acres of local cattle ranches. The area is praire with medium size coolies. Lots of deer that don't know they are being hunted. Great buck to do ratio, close to 50/50. Some real good bucks about 1/3 are shooters (140 or above)Lunch is in town (Elkwater) and dinner is good home cooking. You sleep in the bunk house, setup for up to 4 hunters. We were told by louis that the area we would be hunting had been scouted and active natural licks were located and that stands were in place were moose, deer, and bears were plentiful and would be seen all day long. we were also incourged to come at the begining of the month (sept) becasue of the moose coming to these licks, instead of waiting later in the month when it would have been easier locating moose through calls during the rut. when we arrived we met louis and his guides. louis then left to return to his home 5 hours away. He said to host other hunters. i believe he might have left becasue of the lies and terrible hunting situation that he left us and his guides in. The guides that were sent had never hunted the area and arrived that day before we did, so there was not scouting done in the area. so our trip turned into a 7 day scouting trip. The guides that were with us did a great job and i recommend them for working as hard as they did with us in trying to find moose. if we had come later during the rut the trip might have been different but we were given this time slot under the premise that everything would be fine. another problem we had was the native indians were coming out of the woods as we were going in by 3 and 4 truck loads. They would be hunting all night long and taking any animal they wanted. This is something a outfitter should know about his area and louis did not. This outfiiter is in it for the money and that is it. i have called him and emailed him since our trip and have not gotten any response. please please do not use alberta wilderness adventures or northen lights adventures out of worsley alberta.

This outfitters main camp is located approximately 20 miles east of High Level, Alerta. He also runs a spike camp on the Chinauga River about 2 hours distance. Hunters are placed in canvas wall tents with wood floors and a wood stove. These were well used but kept us warm and dry. Cots were provided which were in very good shape and suprisingly comfortable. Elly, the camp cook, provided home cooked meals which were very good and one could eat as much as you wished. She also had the tent lights on and the wood stoves burning when the hunters arrived back at camp from the evening hunt. The guides were all very experienced, personable and know their bears very well. The hunt would begin at approximately 4:00 in the afternoon when hunters would be transported to their stands, normally by use of ATV's, which could be a very adventerous ride. We were normally in our stands by 5:30. The stands, which are commercially built and provide a 28" x 26" platform and padded seats, were placed 12 to 15 feet in the tree and 12-15 yards from the bait. We would hunt until approximately 11:30 when the guide would come and pick you up and we would be back in camp around 1am.Overall, I hunted 6 days and saw 7 bears and one wolf. I harvested two bears and the wolf with the first bear being a 6'6" sow on the second night and a 150 pound boar on the sixth night. The guides were all impressed with the size of the wolf which they said was a female which weighed aproximately 80 pounds. I saw bears three of the six nights I hunted including two very large boars which were obviouosly looking for sows but were extremely hesitant to come into the baits. Neither presented me with a shot. Of the five hunters in camp ten bears and the wolf were harvested including two hunters tagging out in two days. One hunter saw bears at his bait every day and reported 30+ sightings for the week. Most of the bears were of average size with one cinnamon colored bear being killed. The spike camp reported one hunter shooting a 400 lb bear with a 20" skull. Silver Fox is a very professional outfit and will definitely put you on the bears. Everyone was hardworking and sincerely interested in your success. I will not hesitate to return.

I did not harvest a whitetail, but I was in their home turf. The outfitter had done his homework and had very detailed maps to get in and out of an area in the dark. The deer sited where all good quailty deer. I saw a 170 inch deer at 70 yards, but that was as close as he came. A+ Guide and Facilities!!!!

Outfitter Review: Eric Grinnell - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Eric Grinnell

Hunter: jim bucher

Animals Hunted: black bear

Eric is a knowledgeable person, put is poorly organized and sometimes cuts corners. He has inexperienced people establish bait site locationsMost bait stations were not active during the first part of the hunt, because of poor locations and the baiting process was not started soon enough. Rented some of the ATVs, which did not work properly. Offered to have unsuccessful hunter back free the following year, which was nice. We took some nice bears with Eric, but it could have been much better.

Outfitter Review: Alberta Wilderness Adventures - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Louis Ishilka

Hunter: Bryan Eisenberger

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

They have a very large area which seems to have a lot of bears by the sign we saw. The weather was rain and snow all but one day so made conditions tough. 4 hunters in camp shot 5 bears,2 blacks,1 blond, 1 cinnamon, 1 brown. This is not a five star resort but the cabins are comfortable and the food tasty. If you are looking for an inexpensive spring bear hunt with average size bears and plenty of color give them a try.

Outfitter Review: Buck Mountain Outfitters - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Merv Purschke

Hunter: Steve's Outdoor Adventures

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

We had four hunters booked into Merv's spring bear camps in Alberta. The first two hunters experienced poor weather but harvested four bear, two each. They had good color phase as well. The next two hunters had less success. They each shot one bear but lost one of them in the heavy cover after three trips by the guides to find it. The one hunter who did not take a bear was invited back for a fall hunt for free. Merv ran a tip top camp with high success. Our four hunters shot six bear and we will book the 2001 spring hunt full very soon. Our 1999 waterfowl hunters also had a great hunt. Call our office for details.

Outfitter Review: Silver Fox Outfitters - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Eric Rauhanen

Hunter: Art Davis

Animals Hunted: Black Bear

My guide (Sheldon Fiske) was very good, provided his own ATV's and Tree Stands. They were of good quality and well maintained. Other guides seemed very knowledgable but used camp equipment. Camp supplied Tree Stands were reported very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous (Homebuilts). Camp supplied ATV's were in marginal condition, brakes and lights inop etc. Five hunters took nine bears (three archery hunters / five bears plus one wounded and two rifle hunters / four bears.)I would hunt with Sheldon again and with the other guides if equipment was improved. These guys know their bears but need to work on equipment selection and maintanence.

Outfitter Review: Chinchaga River Hunts - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Bob/Tricia Freeland

Hunter: KEN MANGLE

Animals Hunted: MOOSE, WOLF

THIS WAS A FALL 99 HUNT. ARRIVED IN ALBERTA TWO DAYS EARLY AND TOOK IN SOME OF THE COUNTRY AROUND PEACE RIVER. HOOKED UP WITH THE OWNER,BOB AND HIS WIFE, TRICIA, AT OUR SCHEDULED TIME. HAD BREAKFAST AND HEADED OUT. THE FIRST IMPRESSION ALWAYS SEEMS TO RIGHT ONE. THESE WERE REALLY GREAT PEOPLE. THE TRIP IN TO CAMP WAS JUST A DESCRIBED. NOT FUN. THE BUSH CAN BE UNFORGIVING. UPON REACHING CAMP FOUND THE STAFF TO BE A REFLECTION OF THE OWNER. AND THE FACILITIES WERE SUPER COMFORTABLE. THE FIRST TWO DAYS BOB WAS OUR GUIDE. THE SCHEDULED GUIDE HAD BEEN IN CAMP FOR A WHILE AND NEEDED A BREAK. NOT ONLY WERE WE HUNTING BUT LEARNING AT THE SAME TIME. NOT A LOT OF ACTION BUT SOLID 10 HOURS A DAY IN EFFORT. WHEN OUR SCHEDULED GUIDE, ROGER, RETURNED TO CAMP, WITH HIS WIFE AND TRICIA, WE GOT THE SAME 10 HOUR DAY EFFORT OUT OF ROGER. AND THE HUNT ITSELF? A SHOT AT A WOLF, BY THE OTHER HUNTER AND I MIGHT ADD A MISSED SHOT. A REALLY GREAT STORY BY NOT ENOUGH SPACE OR TIME. AND THE MOOSE. WE SAW ANIMALS, ONE NICE ONE, BUT DID NOT HARVEST ONE.YES, MY FRIEND AND I SPENT A GOOD DOLLAR TO COME HOME EMPTY. IN GAME. BUT HUNTING IS MORE THAN THE KILL AND WE, HUNTERS AND GUIDES, HAD A GREAT VACATION. FOUND SOME NEW FAR AWAY FRIENDS THAT WE KEEP IN TOUCH WITH.WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS HUNT AND OUTFITTER. WELL,I'M SAVING MY PENNIES TO RETURN FOR THE 2001.SEASON.I HAVE TO ADD. THERE WERE SOME NICE BULLS HARVESTED. CHECK THEIR WEB PAGE WWW.CHINCHAGA.AB.CA/

These guys do thier homework. All thier business is repeat clients. They don't need me to write anything about them. You will probably need 2 years Advance booking. I know friends who have waited just to get a spot and will never look for another outfitter in Canada. They average about 3 to 5 Boonies a year.I truely believe their area may hold a world record.

Outfitter Review: Alberta Trophy Whitetails - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Glen Dul

Hunter: Craig Lambeth

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

The 1.5 million acres Glen Dul has assigned to him is of course public land. Of our 8 hunters in the 1st week of November 1999 pre rut time, 1 deer in the 125'' class was killed. We had 3 & 4 wheelers, argos and pickup trucks come within 2 feet of our 8 foot tower stands. One hunter had local hunters shooting at prarie chickens within 75 yards of his stand while another had a local hunter walk up on him & sit down on a bucket within 50 yards & start hunting. If you like to hunt this way then this hunt is for you.

Outfitter Review: Alberta Trophy Whitetails - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Glen Dul

Hunter: Brantley Kemp

Animals Hunted: Whitetail, moose and bear

Glen Dul knows big bucks and how to hunt them! Located in Wandering River, Alberta, his area covers 1.5 million acres of "big bush" with agriculture on the fringe. 15 foot tower blinds are placed at strategic locations - Glen and his staff really do their homework. I have been fortunate to hunt Alberta and Saskatchewan for the past eight years with some really good outfitters. Glen's camp, staff and area is the best I have seen yet. I killed a heavy mid 160's B&C 5x5 on Nov. 9, 1999 and I'm booked for 2000. Feel free to call me at (615) 371 - 1919 or email me at kemp@marchgroup.com.

Outfitter Review: Alberta Trophy Hunters - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Richard Page

Hunter: Joe Lesko

Animals Hunted: black bear, wolf

Every hunter in camp took at least one bear. I took two bears over 6 feet squared. Plenty of wolves near our hunting area, but no shot. Our outfitter has an area of approximately 80 miles by 80 miles with no other hunters or outfitters present. This is typical of how hunting is in Alberta. The good outfitters get huge areas to hunt with no competition from other outfitters or hunters. I saw a total of 9 bears during 5 hunting days. If you really like to hunt black bears you have to get to Alberta at least once, especially if you've wasted your time on one or more Ontario bear hunts. I will be going back soon.

Outfitter Review: Primitive Outfitting - Alberta

Outfitter / Owner: Jeff Lander

Hunter: Sonny Schierl

Animals Hunted: Trophy Whitetail

I have gone hunting with Jeff the last two years, taking a trophy in 98' on Halloween, and returning there for the second week in November this fall. The third morning of my hunt I rattled in a huge buck that held up for fifteen minutes just out of bow range. He then skirted my stand just out of range into a thick swamp, What a buck! Time then passed again for about fifteen minutes to see him sneaking out of the swamp in a different location, one that allowed him a better position to determine the source of the "fighting bucks." He gradually worked within the 25 yard mark and I was at full draw awaiting his next step. I had decided I was going to take the slightly quartering-to shot and realeased my arrow to see him reel around to the swamp he came from. I radioed my outfitter after about forty-five minutes to tell him I had taken a shot and could see the pass-through arrow sticking into the base of a tree that had behind the deer. After getting on his trail we had fabulous lung-blood for about 100 yards. Then the deer which was starting to circle started to lose us. We continued on the trail following the blood we would find on twigs the deer would happen to brush against. To the top of a hill that overlooked a very dense and dark spruce swamp. That was the last blood we found for the next two days. I was unsuccessful in finding that magnificent animal this fall, but I hope to find him this spring when I am going up to shed-hunt with Jeff. I may have not got that animal, but my outfitter did very well on putting me in the right spot. That was the first time a hunter had ever been in that stand site.He is also one of the friendliest and outgoing people I have ever hunted with and we continue to keep in touch.
