This was my second hunt with Blaine and his crew. The first was in Dec 2014 for deer and hogs. We killed one buck and a 300 boar during the hunt. Saw other game, just didn't harvest more. Went back for a second trip in March of 2016. This time we harvested 300 and 400 pound boars. Saw other hogs, just not the size we wanted to shoot. The second hunt was strictly hunting at night. Plenty of activity for me. I will go back again. This is a free range hunt and not a guarantee. You can't be playing on your phone or talking while on the stand, the boars are like ninjas. Worth the price of admission for me. Met some nice people at camp. I like cooking for myself because you eat what you want. I didn't mind travelling to town for a restaurant. I was on vacation. This is affordable and worth the money. Have driven from Maine twice to do this and will do it again.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

The deer I saw was small and mainly doe's, we were expected to take deer with a 16" spread and the only deer we saw with that spread was at the camp house mounted. The guides were mainly taxi cab drivers and they didn't have much imput in the stands we were put in each day. One man called the shots and he wasn't our guide. However it did seem that if you had been at Tatum Creek before you recieved special attention. Those folks hunted land that I never saw. As far as the camp house it was excellent and the food provided was excellent and that was about it. It was a waist of money to me because my expectations were not met. The web site will lead you to believe that there was larger deer to be taken and that was misleading on there part. To wrap it up stay at home and don't waste your money.

The Laid-back atmosphere, comfortable surroundings(including the bed), the overall feeling of safety and the knowledgeable staff were enough to make us want to return; however it was the extra attention that Pia, Jake, John-Jacob, Gaddy, Ken, Red, and Johnny gave us that insured that we will return every year. This place is family friendly and like family, everyone looks out for one another and encourages one another. The return guests from previous years(some for 12 years in a row) proved to us that it wasn't just a show. We truly enjoyed our time at Water Valley Lodge and cannot wait to return. Remember, it is HUNTING not shooting and these guys made it fun and rewarding.

I hunted with (2) friends at Great southern Outdoors on 1-3 thru 1-6 2013. The food was great. I got thrown into a room with my friend and his wife and we all felt cramped. There was a total of (18) hunters there at the same time. We saw absolutely no deer. One guy killed a small 8 point. We saw no does, and no hogs. Some of the hunters saw some spike bucks. I was really disappointed. I saved my money and after working all year I was ready to hunt. I could not believe that we did not even see a deer. I guess the biggest kicker was that no one told us thank you for coming or they were sorry we did not get to even see anything. They seem like nice people but they took my $1800.00 and all I got was some good food and a place to sleep. Simply disgusted, I got screwed.

A great time was had again. This is our 5th trip to Pa-Ko and the hospitality is tremendous. Jay and Rita take good care of the hunters making sure that your stay is comfortable. We were on stand early and the stand selections were always right for the wind. Jay is meticulous in ensuring that all hunters are placed in favorable locations regarding the wind direction. There were three people in our group and we all brought home deer this year, 8pt, 9pt, and 10pt bucks.

This is our fourth year at Pa-Ko during the pre-rut. The weather was a bit warm, so the deer were not moving as much as we would have liked, but that is the nature of hunting eh? Jay and Rita take very good care of you. The food is excellent and the guides know where you need to go. Jay makes certain that you are hunting in stands that are right for the wind. I saw deer on every sit and had the opportunity for a shot on the first night(unfortunately I am a bit slow) at a nice buck. One of the other members of our party got a shot at a very large buck on the second night we were hunting but did not hit the animal well. We had a great time, the food was excellent and the hospitality even better. Great hunt!

I spent $550.00, plus 2 days out of the office at $225.00/hr in billable hours, plus $62.00 for my share of fuel, plus approximately $100.00 for my food to boar hunt. There were 6 of us and only one person killed a boar. None of us saw a wild boar during daylight hours, and two of us (of which I was one) neither saw nor heard a wild boar. We were reduced to hunting in the dark with flashlights and spotlights. I had to go to Walmart to buy a flashlight to tape on my gun.My friend, John booked the hunt at least 5 months in advance. When we got there, we surmised that the feeders had just been recently filled and the hogs had not yet started coming to many of the feeders. The outfitter and guides were friendly and they did let me use a gun when I discovered my rifle scope was damaged. However, that is as far as my compliments go. It was definitely a total waste of time. The only game I saw that I hunt, were turkeys, and I have more than enough of them at home. On a scale of 1 to 10, it gets a 1.

I just returned from alabama on my very first paid hunting trip I have been burned now I have to wonder if all outfitters are crooks? We took 9 people to alabama which profitted this outfitter about 15000.00 dollars it took us to saturday to figure out all we were doing was playing musical chairs with tree stands they even put a guy in a stand were a guy shoot a doe the day before and still had blood on the ground. In my experience i seen about 30 deer total only 1 was even questionable being a shooter seen plently of deer with messed up horns. Stands was placed out in the open with no cover, so deer seen you before you saw them. Ladder stands were old and small. Everytime we asked if they had stands no one had hunted yet, we were told the winds not right. The only stand that seen the most deer, the owner matt hunted the next day after 3 people ask to hunt that stand, isn't this odd. If you take the same pickup truck down the same road 4 times a day for 3 days every week the deer have you figured out. So in closing we feel like our money was wasted in Alabama.

If you could dream up and design the perfect place to hunt whitetail, Pa-Ko would exceed any imagination or expectation! Being a veteran gun/bow hunter of 22 years I have been to many places but this one tops the list! J. Paul Taylor and his wife Rita are extremely personable and I was met immediately after entering the plantation by them. Locations to hunt are plentiful and is geared for any type of hunter, novice to experienced and even accomodate the handicapped. Stands and shooting houses are extremely comfortable. J. Paul really wants his hunters to succeed and his knowledge of deer hunting is second to none. He can talk shop with the best of them or educate the novice. He will put you on the deer! Each location I sat was better than the last with deer being seen every time out. The accomodations and food far surpassed my expectations! I came in there just wanting to be in a location where there was an opportunity to harvest a big buck, and I would have slept in a tent to hunt this land! The cabins and food were excellent and I was never hungry. I sat in the stand for 11 hours one day (my choice) and they packed my lunch and took great care of me. Pa-Ko is a can't miss location and I'm not sure how anyone would be disappointed after their stay.

I would first and foremost like to thank Mr. J. Paul, owner of PA-KO Plantation, for putting me on a buck of a lifetime. The 12 point with 4 drop tines that I shot on December 28th, 2010 is my biggest buck to date. I can't say enough about the amenities, food, staff, and hospitality of the owners of PA-KO Plantation. And, oh yeah the hunting isn’t bad either. Mr. Paul has been managing his plantation for many years, to grow big mature whitetails and I would say that all of his hard work is paying off. I shot a huge 12 point that has 4 drop tines and from the looks of Mr. Paul’s trail cam photo’s he wasn’t the only huge buck on the plantation. I would recommend to anyone that is looking for a first class operation to hunt mature whitetails, long bearded turkeys, or fast flying quail to check out PA-KO Plantation. www.pa-ko.com Sincerely,Clayton Chapman

I saw large deer on this hunt but they either stayed out of bow range or I lost light before I had the opportunity to take a shot. Such is bow hunting. They have numerous ladder stands scattered throughout the property so there is easy access to prime hunting locations. The accommodations and food are exceptional. If you are looking for an exceptional place to hunt in the Southeast US, Pa-Ko would be a good place to start.

One of the first outfitters in the state of Alabama to offer ram hunts. Terry has a great place that is challenging for bowhunters and gun hunters alike! This particular bow hunt was challenging for me and the reward was excellent. Expect record book rams and great prices. Mouflon hunts are competitively priced and are a bargain for hunters that have to travel to Texas to kill one!! I recommend this outfitter to the fullest...

This was the worst hunt of my life, the owner who was also our guide was only worried about how to advertise and how his web-site was. He started drinking alcohol at 4:15am. He put no time in scouting and the stands where horrible. They where very low, facing the sun, so you could see but the deer could see you. There was 11 guys hunting and we got two does and not one of us saw a shooter buck. I went down with my father and his friend. we were there three days and the last day Rex decides to put my father in a different group of guys. I saw two deer the whole time, my father saw four deer and Doug saw three or four. I will never go back, I will tell as many people as I can how bad it was and how he is only about getting the money and not taking care of the hunter.

My father, fiance and I were all in camp from December 26 - 29 to hunt whitetails. My father and I were hunting with rifles while my fiance was hunting with a bow. We all saw shooter bucks and plenty of does. My finance could not get a good shot at a shooter buck. My father missed a shooter buck along with a couple of coyotes on the second morning, but he did manage to redeem himself by getting a doe with his fourth shot that morning. As for myself, I missed a doe that same second morning. On the final morning of our hunt, I managed to get a nice 8 point. Two does came by my blind at about 8am with a buck chasing them. It took a while to get him to stop long enough to get a shot off and it was a lousy shot at that. I managed to shoot him through the brisket and out the left shoulder. The deer ran and I only managed to find one drop of blood and a couple splinters of bone. J. Paul, guides Will and Lester, and Rebel (the ultimate tracking dog) came out to look for my buck. Rebel was off as soon as he hit the scent trail. J. Paul, Will and I spent the better part of the next two hours trailing after Rebel who never let off the deer. We finally caught up to Rebel, who had cornered the exhausted buck, after a couple miles. We still aren't sure how that deer managed to run that far with its shoulder as busted up as it was. After a long exhausting morning, I finally had my buck thanks to Rebel, J. Paul and Will. Without Rebel's amazing tracking abilities, I'm pretty sure we would never have found that buck as that one drop of blood at the spot I shot was all we saw. As you can tell, I have an amazing story to go with an amazing trip. We all loved our experience at Pa-Ko and cannot wait to go back again!

I arrived just before noon on Sunday November 16, 2008 and by 3:00 J. Paul had me settled into my climber. It was an excellent location but I didn't see anything but turkeys that first afternoon. The weather turned terrible overnight. A cold front had moved through and it was windy everyday until my last day there. The wind died down and the deer started coming out of the woodwork. It was fun watching them but none came within bow range. I am already making arrangements to schedule another hunt. In my opinion the facilities and staff are superb.

Doug and Lyle run a great hunting outfit. They do all the work themselves other than cooking diner. The way they draw stands is 100% fair. It doesn't matter if it is you first trip or you have been coming for years. You don't have any input to what stand you will hunt. In the morning you hunt ridges over clear-cuts and food plots in the evening. All stand are chosen by Doug and Lyle depending on which way the wind is blowing. There will only be 4 hunters in camp. I hunted near the end of the season 1-13-09 to 1-18-09 and saw numerous does and 13 buck of which 5 were shooters and which I took 2 nice eight pointers. They require you to take mature 3-5 year old bucks. Any question email me at buckman*@hotmail.com.

This is a large hunting operation with great accomodations, logistics, and coordination. Good place for a group to relax and enjoy a rifle hunt. The Utleys are fantastic hosts and do a good job putting hunters in a place to see deer. This is not a one on one type hunt where they aim to get you in front of the biggest buck, its more of a vacation and chance to see some deer and enjoy southern hospitality. Chances are good at a few does for the freezer and smaller buck. If lucky you may get a crack at a real bruiser, one shot during week we attended.

Their guides also are very organized and put you on stand and let you know what to expect they make you feel very comfortable. You will see deer and will have a oportunity to take deer. I take my customers there every year for the past 6 years and each time they ask me if they can come back next year. I arrived on a Friday afternoon. After eating a quick lunch and saying hello to everyone I took to the field about 2:30. After sitting in a well built box blind looking over a green field for about thirty minutes I shot a nice eight point and the does wouldn't stop coming out. So I did the only thing I could think of shot a doe to. You are allowed to shoot one mature buck and two does and I could have ended this hunt in the first thirty minutes of the hunt!!! I didn't shoot my third doe so I could hunt some. I had also took my bow for some challenge and I'm an avid bow hunter. Long story short. It rained the whole weekend never the less I still spotted deer. I seen six deer total, all were does except the buck I shot. There were two other hunters that seen other bucks and does and one shot a nice eight and a doe also. Accomodations were first class and the best food I've ate in a long time. Everyone was very friendly and the owner knows the land, and the guides will take you to and from the stand and debone your meat for you. I can't say enough about this place. The same day I got home from my trip I called and I'm trying to get back down there in the next couple weeks. Any questions just e-mail me.

The acommadations were excellent with one drawback in that the cabins, lodge, and dining hall were too spread out.I harvested a nice 8 point buck about 3 1/2 years old and weighed about 180 lbs. The overall experience was very good although they forgot to take me and one other person out one morning, but that was quickly taken care of with a phone call. There not really set up for bowhunters so you really need to take a climbing stand.

I arrived on Thursday (23 Oct 08) around 2 p.m. and left Sunday @ noon. The reason that this trip was so cheap is because it was booked through a local archery shop. The cost was $400.00 a hunter, 20 hunters use 2 consecutive weeks, 12 hunters the first week, 8 hunters the second; the owner told me that he gave us a "discounted price to try to get more bow hunters to come to the PA-KO plantation". On the Friday morning after it quit raining, we were taken out and told to scout and find a suitable tree to put our climbers on. The next day, Saturday, they forgot to arrange for someone to take us out. We had to call the Manager, who called the owner. He and his son took 2 of us to our stands. I arrived at my climber @ 6:10 a.m. After talking to some of the other hunters, on Sunday I talked to the owner of the PA_KO Plantation (J.Paul Taylor), which was the day I left, to discuss some issues that arose during my stay. He told me that he was not really set up to handle bow hunters. The statement on his website about the "1000" acres set aside for "BOWHUNTERS ONLY" was and 8-9 years old statement and he needs to delete that off of the website. He rotates locations for bow hunters around the 5000 acres that is part of the plantation, so the bow hunter area this year might be a gun hunter area next year. He also stated that "gun hunters are how he makes his money". Every stand/location that I was put in/on had a shooting house less than 100 yards from it and someone had sat there the week before. Our guides, were NOT GUIDES, but people that work for him on the plantation, they are NOT BOW HUNTERS and the owner stated this fact to me. One member of the hunting party was taken out by the plantation manager, but when asked about wind direction and hunting/stand placement the manager stated "I don't know anything about that what do you guys think". When asked about the ladder stands the owner (J.Paul Taylor) stated that the stands are geared more towards the gun hunter. I asked him about a lock on climber that I sat in that had grown into the tree, J.Paul told me that the stands pays off year after year and as long itÂ’s a live tree there was no reason to move it or do maintenance on the stand, 2 out of the 8 hunters were successful in taking an 8 & 9 point (one doe was never found). The food, room & lodge were OUTSTANDING. I would NOT recommend this outfitter to a bow hunter. I would recommend it to a gun hunter.

Just returned from another late January hunt at Redoak, and once again had a tremendous time. This was my tenth year hunting there along with my three friends. This year we ended up harvesting eight bucks between us (all of which were shooters) and a few does.Others in camp also took some very nice bucks.i cannot say enough about Mathew Pittman's knowledge of his land or the tremendous hospitality Matt and his family give us every year. If one is looking for a genuinly great hunt in a warm family environment along with the potential to take some very nice bucks then this is the place.

This is a wonderful place and I'll be back. It's a relaxing vacation and if you get a deer then its a bonus. The attention to detail and the work these people do to make their guests feel welcome is second to none. Everyone should have the opportunity to visit PAKO!!

I hunted there between Christmas and New Years 2007. The weather was really bad with rain the entire trip. The rut does not start until mid January in that area so I was there a little early. I only saw three deer the entire trip and one of the was real far away and I was only able to see it for two seconds. The other two were jumped as I was walking to a stand and I only got a glimpse of their tail. There were about ten hunters there with me over the three days. They killed two does. And two deer that were fines. One kid killed a three pointer and another man shot a really small seven point that was about 13". The food was good. They served more of a country cooking that a deer camp menu. Steve the outfitter was really cool. The guides were really pretty good. The guide I had, Garrett was really young and it seemed that our group was seeing less deer than the others. I was not impressed with him at all. I would request David or Clint if I were to return. Everyone seen deer on the trip though, but mostly in the afternoons in the green fields where you could not take a shot. The lodge is first class and with private rooms it is the best. Robeta cooks up a nice meal and everyone like to talk. I would hunt there again. I would just wait until late December and request a different guide.

The food was great and the guides were friendly but the owners limited their input. You could not set the same stand twice and do bring your own ATV or stand. On the morning of November 18th, I harvested a 170 lb seven-point buck. The stand I was hunting from was perfect - it backed up against a swampy area that was loaded with wood ducks. After watching four does enter, traverse, and then leave the clearing, the buck entered and worked his way carefully through the trees. The buck fell where he stood. I shot him through the neck as he moved from one clump of trees to another - he fell immediately and without a kick. I paced off the distance from the stand to where he fell - 112 steps up a gradual slope. This was the most exciting hunt I have ever been on.

Have hunted at Great Southern for the last 5 years. On my first trip to the Plantation I harvest a respectfull 8 Point Buck with 16" spread. Rex Pritchet Owner / Guide went out of his way to make sure I had a successful Hunt, as he has everytime I visited this wonderful Plantation. The very same morning I harvested the 8 point I saw 10 racked Bucks in one Green Field, with one approaching 200 inches in size. Rex told me exactly where to be watching for this behometh. Long story short I missed ! My fault not Rex's, you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink it. Since that first trip I have seen several trophy Bucks at this Plantation. Hit one with a 250 yard shot, very large buck, but lost him due to severe strom that moved through area after my shot. Rex has put me on several deer at the Plantation 2 of them last year. The first one was on my first trip into the field, been on the stand 2 hours, Big Buck appears, I miss ! Again !! 2nd day Rex carry's me to my stnad, been on the stand 1 hour, Big Buck appears, I Miss ! Again !! Both shots were at less than 100 yards, adrenalin level , very high, if you don't get the excitement out of the Hunt then why Hunt ?

Outfitter / Owner: Rex Pritchett

As previously referenced, the accommodations, food and drink, and support staff (cooks/housekeeping) at GSO were exceptional. There were several individuals that certainly went out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay. However, when it got down to hunting in the truest sense, the owner and his “guides” don’t have a clue. Stand placement often times wasn’t complimentary to the prevailing winds and my family repeatedly noticed stand locations that were EXCESSIVELY hunted. This was confirmed by the various candy wrappers, scent wicks, cover scent / attractant bottles, numerous cigarette butts, toilet paper, and various piles of human feces in and around stand locations. Prior to booking this hunt (June 2005), my cousin and I flew from Northern Kentucky to GSO to check the facility out in person. We were specifically told that due to the strict adherence to the number of hunters permitted at GSO, stand locations were most often times “ONLY HUNTED ONCE A YEAR” unless otherwise requested by the respective hunter/customer. This is certainly not the case. Also, I personally had the owner, Mr. Rex Pritchett; take me to and from various stand locations during our stay. While doing so, he often took the liberty to smoke while in the vehicle. As most people know, that is not conducive to good deer hunting, especially when stand placement is off. In addition, during the stay, respectful, yet clear requests were made by my family to possibly remedy the situation. On the last morning of the hunt, the owner, Mr. Pritchett, attempted to place me in a climber that was to be placed ON A HIGH VOLTAGE POWER LINE POLE. Not in an adjacent tree line, but the pole itself. This was also during a storm front with heavy rain, and yes, LIGHTENING. I’m confident the power company would be as entertained as my family was with such a request. If you have any questions, please call as needed. Happy hunting!

Jake runs a 1st class operation in all aspects of the hunt. I would recommend him highly. My situation was difficult as I decided to bow hunt for deer and hogs in last November, 2005. As with many hunts, weather plays a very important role in hunter success. The first 5 days saw temperatures in the mid to high 80's, which was 20 to 30 degrees hotter than normal. Nothing was moving because of the heat. Only the last two days, animal activity picked up as the weather turned cooler.

I’ll keep it short. Throughout the hunt (Jan 26 – 29, 2006), my family and I noticed numerous cigarette butts, candy and snack wrappers, human feces, scent wicks, and a plethora of cover scents and attractants in and around our stand locations. This is at a place that apparently prides itself in very limited hunting pressure. The best is when you have the “plantation owner”, Rex Pritchett, smoking like a steel plant in the vehicle that he transports customers to/from their stands. This isn’t very conducive to good deer hunting or “a true southern experience”. If you have any questions, you may contact me 859.380.5358.

The areas hunted were being used way to often. The morning hunts were a waste of time, they put us in bow blinds and any deer walking through that area was probably lost. I saw 15 does, 4 spikes in my time there. One person in my party never saw one animal. (He did see a pack of wild dogs) Amazing though, Mosey Oak people showed up to film a hunt and on both nights they went out the shot a nice 8 point and an old six point. It must have been a miracle because we sure didn't see anything worth shooting. Makes you think that we were set up. If you want to waste your money, book this hunt.

The operation run by J. Paul fits the definition of "southern hospitality" completely. The cabins are new and clean, the food is great, the staff friendly and very capable, every need is provided for. A great social experience. My hunt was with my son and during the rut (1/12-1/15/06). There were 12 hunters in camp. Lots of deer were seen but only 4 were taken by the hunters and none were "trophy" bucks. Two were non-typical "culls" and 2 were small basket mature bucks. There appears to be a good ratio of bucks because, of the 20-24 deer I saw, 50% of them were bucks. Only 2 or 3 real "trophy" bucks were seen by the hunters but no shots were available. J. Paul stated that they are in the middle of an agressive, multi-year feeding program to enhance the sizeable herd,The only shortcoming of the hunt was that on the last morning's hunt, J. Paul, after putting my son and me on our stands, went "scouting". He then shot a beautiful 9 point about 8 AM in the area between my son and me. I believe the owner should only be shooting "culls" and certainly not shooting trophies while his hunters are on stand in the immediate area. I don't know if this is a normal occurance or if he couldn't resist the temptation this one time.Overall, we had a great time and the hunt is worth the money.

First let me start by saying I think Alabama is a bit over rated. I have hunted w/ outfitters on 3 different occasions in the "Black Belt" region and have had no success. Red Oak is affiliated w/ White Oak Plantation which has a good reputation. We hunted 1/7-1/10 w/ 12 hunters in camp. One modest 8 point buck was shot. Six hunters departed early and skipped the last mornings hunt. Several small bucks and doe were seen, but big mature bucks were no where to be found. Red Oak is a great hunt for the money, but do not expect a buck that would score much past 120. Again, I'm not sold on Alabama's potential.

We saw deer every day and had the “Beaver Pond” area just to ourselves. Also we brought our own climbers so we had more flexibility as to where we would set up. My son took a 91 lb doe (his first with a bow) on Friday (he could not get a shot at a bigger one that was also present) and I missed twice at two different does on Saturday. We had about 30 or people for Jackies hunt and altogether took 17 does and 4 hogs. No bucks but kind of early in the season for strong movement. We had a great time and based on the number of deer we killed (this was an archery only shoot) I would say the Southern Sportsman Lodge has the deer and they do no just rely on their past reputation.

I hunted for 3 days in late Jan '05. I saw countless doe and some smaller bucks. A harvestable buck has to be 8 points or 15". We had 12 hunters in camp and 3 bucks were harvested, on of which was a very small basket racked 8 point. We had some tough wind the first day and a half, but the hunt improved. The potential is there for a modest buck and you should see plenty of deer. My biggest complaint is hunting out of old wooden ladder stands that are 8'-10' off the ground, but a good hunt for the $$...

The company I worked for scheduled several hunts with Water Valley Lodge for our clients. We enjoyed each hunt and left with some really nice trophies. The guides were professional and friendly, always giving a 110% effort to make our hunt enjoyable and successful. The atmosphere at the lodge was warm, comfortable, and had the feel of a true sense of southern hospitality. The food and service were exceptional. We never failed to see a large quantity of top quality deer on each hunt.If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at sabston@ebesco.com and I will e-mail pictures of recent kills.

I have hunted with the Pittmans 5 times thru the years. I have always enjoyed myself and they are friendly and always do their best to make your stay enjoyable. Their guides have been with them for a long time and I enjoy seeing them each season. I see many of the same faces every year and have made many friends. The high # of returning hunters says alot about the Pittmans and White Oak. I have taken 3 8 pointers and 1 10 pointer at White Oak. The trophy hunting is excellent and challenging which is the way I like it. The Pittmans make no guarantees for game. What they do give you is a great place to hunt with excellent quality and quantity of game. The rest is up to you. I would recommend to all. If the good Lord is willing I hope to return to White Oak for many years to come.

I have hunted with Jake for many years. Water Valley has always been a good place to hunt. We dont always have a successful hunt but the chance is always there. The fields are large and numerous. It would take may hunts to see all of them. I like having private bathrooms and I also like having the bunkhouses separate from the dining hall and the lounge.

I was looking for a place not too far from my home where I could take my 10 year old daughter on a deer hunt. I was concerned about a "hunting camp" atmosphere and told the Utsey's as much when I first called them. They assured me that I need not be concerned about people misbehaving at Water Valley . They also said they would take good care of my daughter. WOW! Did they ever! Everyone there was so welcoming and friendly. She saw lots of deer each time she went out, many of them bucks. She was nervous about killing one that was too small and wouldn't pull the trigger on several bucks that she saw. Finally they took her to the six point area where she killed a nice 10 point! And she shot a doe as well. I really can't say enough good things about our trip to Water Valley Lodge. Our room was extremely clean and we had a bath all to ourselves. We thought they were giving us special treatment because of us being female and all but it turns out that every group has private accommodations there. My daughter is a real pickey eater but it never mattered there. She ate everything that came out of the kitchen. Needless to say, the food was excellent! Can't wait to go back!

I've hunted with the Utsey's at Water Valley for the past three years. I've always seen lots (scores)of deer and hogs as well. I've taken 3 beautiful whitetail at Water Valley and two boar hogs as well. What I like most about Water Valley is the overall atmosphere there. With the exception of one other guest who was too uptight about hunting to hunt, the guests at Water Valley always seem to have a good time. I've met some really nice people there and look forward to my trip this upcoming season. The guides have always taken good care of me and I consider them to be well prepared for their job each day. They have always been right on with the information they have given me about the places I've hunted. The food is excellent and in abundance...in fact I always gain at least 5 pounds over a three day period. As for accommodations, I have yet to have to share a room or bunk with anyone other than my friends, who also hunt Water Valley each year. Their policy provides private accommodations for each party that comes there. I would reccomend Water Valley to anyone who has an appreciation for well managed property (land) and facilities. They don't like for you to shoot young bucks, get into their vehicles with a loaded gun or muddy up their rooms with nasty boots. Personally those are rules I can live with.

Animals Hunted: White Tail Deer

I hunted here in the middle of their rut in Jan. 2004. In a 3 day hunt I saw a total of 11 deer with only one being a shooter. They have an 8 point restriction at the whole place and a big chunk of the land is 15" spread or bigger or $500. fine. This place was overhunted. The deer I did see walked out and immediately looked up at the stands. They had seen hunters in them before and they didn't rotate them very well. The lodge burned down around Christmas and no-one called and mentioned this to me. We were penned up in small outdated hotel rooms with nothing for amenities. We ate venison at every meal provided by hunters whacking does. The brochures said hogs could be taken free and none of the 15 hunters in camp ever saw one. Most hunters I talked with were all disappointed as well. The people were really nice but this wasn't "the hunt of a lifetime" as advertised. This 3 days cost me $1500. Not even close to being worth that much.

Animals Hunted: Whitetail Deer

This was the first season that the property was hunted as a commercial operation. (I had hunted the property the year before, while it was in private hands.) These guys have done a terrific job. A group of about 8 of us hunted the last 3 1/2 days of Alabama's season (which ended 1/31/2004). We all saw lots of deer. I saw 50, including two probably shootable bucks, which I passed on waiting for something bigger. Although only 3 or 4 bucks were taken, I believe everyone in the group saw at least one buck that met the 15" minimum inside spread dimension. The Alabama deer herd has a very late rut, which should have been going on while we were there ... we did see lots of bucks chasing doe, but I couldn't tell whether the rut was past peak or not. The lodging was very nice, not luxurious but more than adequateand, and the food was very good. But the guides were terrific and Mike Cutler, the GM, was the best. These guys were friendly (and funny) and really went out of their way to make sure everyone had a quality experience. I'm going back next year for sure.

This is my second trip to G.S.O. My first trip was in January, during the rut, I saw lots of bucks, they were just too far for a shot, tons of does, bobcat, and coyotes. My second trip was in November, opening day. It was real warm and the animals just weren't moving. I didn't see a buck the whole 5 days, but my husband saw 15 bucks all at once!! He got a nice buck and a hog. I got a hog also and was thrilled with it since I live in Maine and that is what I wanted to get. My husband and I fell in love with the people that run this outfit, they are extremely nice and really want you to get a buck. We will go back.

This was my fourth trip to Tatum Creek. Matt continues to run a first class operation. In fact, a new lodge is being built and will be ready for the 2004/2005 season. On this trip I hunted in early January, during the beginning of the rut. I saw two mature shooter bucks and a third that was very, very, close to meeting the 15-inch inside spread restriction. Had the situation been different, I would have harvested that buck (a big bodied 6-poiter).

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

I hunted here in Jan 2003 for whitetail. I wasn't frustrated because of poor weather, or other things out of the control of the Utsy's. I hunted for 3 full days and didn't see anything larger than a young five point. That didn't frustrate me. What did Frustrate me was that deer would look up into empty stands, i could see accross the fields, to see if a hunter was in the tree. This indicates that this area is over-hunted. It's hard to see mature deer when even the yearlings know where the stands are, and for what they are used. Jake told me that they had 25,000 acres or so. (I believe that is correct, close anyway)That is alot of land to have pressure this great. In my 3 days, there were around 15-20 hunters there. That was in my three days. That is a warning sign. Sell as many hunts as you can, screw hunting pressure and game management. Their entire game management philosophy is Don't shoot does, and bucks must be 17inch spread. thats it. other than that, unload the busses, pay the man, and start shootin'! yeee haaa. The guides could care less. This was my first "outfitted" hunt. I had a great time in Wyoming. Im glad i didn't give up after this scam. Any questions, please email me. I am not bitter. I wish i had found this site. before I gave them my money. I don't know who the guys that left positive info are, butI agree with the guy jake called a turd. Of the 15-20 hunters i saw, 2 took legal bucks. One was a beauty. no one even saw a hog. If you want to spend approx $400 a day to see yearlying does and spikes- give 'em a call!

My son and I went on a 3-day hunt between Christmas and New Years Day 2003, which is typically a slow time for deer hunting. Nevertheless, we saw about 50 deer between the two of us, including one very shootable 8-point. Our guide, Josh, was very knowledgeable and dedicated to a high quality experience. Master Rack Lodge has rules for taking deer, two of which are (1) no shooting does over food plots (which keeps the plots from becoming killing zones) and (2) point/spread limits for bucks depending on the area. As a result, you may see lots of deer that cannot be taken, which was the general experience for the hunters there when we were. As to the accomodations, they were extremely nice, right up until the time the lodge burned to the ground. (No kidding.) The hotel survived and was quite nice. I'm sure the lodge will be rebuilt before the 2004-2005 season. Most of the hunters there were repeat customers, which speaks highly of the quality of the hunting and accomodations. We will certainly go back.

Outfitter Review: Bent Creek Hunting Lodge - Alabama

Outfitter / Owner: John Lanier

Hunter: Steve

Animals Hunted: Whitetail deer

I've hunted quite a few places down south and Bent Creek was by far the worst. Guides and staff had little to no interaction with hunters (until it was time to pay our balance). They never shared any information about where we would be hunting, famaliarized us with the geographic location, or gave us any tips for the particular stands or blinds we would be stationed in. They were chauffeurs, not guides. It was also obvious that the stands and blinds were not being rotated and they were being used day after day. This was evident by the garbage and shell cases left in and around every stand and blind i occupied. One hunter in my group lost his drivers license one afternoon and a hunter from another group found it in the blind he was in the next afternoon. During my 3 day hunt i saw 1 button buck, 4 does, and one buck with 3 points on one side an 1 spike on the other. I don't rate an outfitter by success alone, but the lack of game we saw combined with the unprofessional attitudes of guides and staff made my experience at Bent Creek extremely disappointing.

Animals Hunted: WHITETAIL

Having just returned yesterday I wanted to post a review while it is still fresh in my mind.I am an experienced hunter with plenty to show over the years but won't bore you with the details.Describe this place...well...Awesome in every way. When arriving I was greeted by Rita and had a warm welcome and got me checked in and took care of the licence ect.She then took me for a personal tour of the compound pointing out where the meals are served and the game house ect. Then I was shown to my cabin. These cabins are superb.Like new super clean and tidy that include 2 twin beds and a big bathroom & shower.Rita let me know that lunch was served at 12:30 and then I unpacked.Walked over to the range and just double checked that my rifle was sighted in after the trip up from Florida. I was introduced to Dewayne, who is one of the guides. This guy knows this 5,000 acre property real well.He actually must double as a southern comic because at dinner and at the bon fire every night he had me in stitches. The other guide is Lester and he also is the guy that cuts your deer up and de-bones it.Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner were truely increadable.Fantastic southern home cooking at its best! The best Pecan Pie that I have ever had.Now on to the hunt. The first night I was in a box stand and was there 20 minutes and this fantastic 6 point buck stepped out. He was 175 lbs anyway, absolutly one of the most healthy bucks I have seen. Soon followed a doe.Every day you are taked to different stands which gives you a great perspective on just how large this piece of property is.The quality of the equipment is excellent. They have trucks, kawasaki mules ect to get you anywhere. The box stands are all well constructed and a few have heaters as well. The ladder stands are of the best quality out there. This place takes NO shortcuts in providing a great hunting enviorment. They also have many green fields that are planted with barley, winter rye ect.The owner J. Paul Taylor is one guy that really gives a damn about his guests. He frequently talks to every person and really gets you involved with the every day thinking of what is ahead.Educating you on the way of the area and deer habitat. He certainly knows what he is doing and has put together a sensational deer envoirnment. It certainly shows.I passed up 3 6point bucks , 2, 4 pointers that were all beauties and the last night a 8 pointer came out of onto one of the fields and he had broken the other half off.It was fresh and he was over 200lbs for sure.I yielded a doe and its at the butcher now and passed on a few does that I could have taken earlier in the trip. All of these deer were healthy and looking good. This place is a bullseye for sure. Extremely hard to be dissapointed with any aspect of Pa-Ko.I will be back with my brother for next year for sure.I went this year to check it out and plan on being a long term customer.A very target rich enviorment.By the way... in the game room is a pool table dart board tv and tons of good cigars, top shelf liquer and a huge beer cooler which is all included in the price. After dinner grab a brandy, cigar and either play some pool or go outside to the huge bon fire that is burning every night.Pa-Ko is hard to beat. Its worth every single penny of the experience.Just hope J. Paul doen't read this and raises the prices. If anyone has any questions at all, you are urged to contact me anytime.I always tell it like it is.Best of hunting where ever you may go.Pete KnorrVenice, FLsellproperties@aol.com

Outfitter Review: Hamilton Hills Plantation - Alabama

Outfitter / Owner: Doug/Lyle Smith

Hunter: Derek Underwood

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

This was my first paid gun hunt and my third paid hunt this season (I'm a bowhunter, too). The bottom line for me was the guides. Doug & Lyle (brothers) were born & raised there, and they know the land. After breakfast & lunch they would break out a deck of playing cards and say "high two go with Lyle, low two go with Doug". All four hunters would pick a card to see which selected stand they would hunt. The selected stands would already be written down on paper with two picked by Doug & two picked by Lyle. This simple method eliminated any possible notions of a hunter thinking that the guides were playing favorites. Then Doug or Lyle (depending on who you drew) would draw you a map showing you the layout of your hunting area, with the method(s) of approach and departure from the stand, close property lines (if applicable), typical movements of the deer, recent history of the stand, tempature and wind direction, etc. All 8 of my hunts had perfect wind! I wish I had guides like this for my bowhunting trips! I was always on my stand on time. These guys are on the ball. I saw at least 52 different deer in four days! You get one doe for your trip, and one buck a day. I took a delicious doe (the meat has already been processed), a nice coyote, and my first buck, a nice six point. I had a glimpse of a monster in the tree line during the same hunt that I took the buck. They have the deer population. Hamilton Hills only takes four hunters at a time with a hunter:guide ratio of 2:1! Four hunters for seventy something stands! Not much pressure there! Out of 4 hunters, there were 4 bucks taken and all got does. You stay in the old family farm house, sleeping in a large room with several beds. Doug & Lyle take turns cooking breakfast. They bring in a local lady (Esther I think) to cook traditional southern dishes as well. I saved my money all year to be able to afford some good hunting opportunities, and I feel like my money was well spent with the Smiths. I cannot say that for all the hunts I have taken. I highly recommend these guys for a south Bama hunting adventure. I know I'll be back.

Outfitter Review: Water Valley Lodge - Alabama

Outfitter / Owner: Jake Utsey

Hunter: Morris T Yates

Animals Hunted: Whitetail

This is an update of my experience @ Water Valley in 2002. I have now received 2 emails from Mr Utsey this past week. In the first email he states that he transported me to within close proximity of the stand that I hunted all day and it wasn't his fault that an inexperienced hunter ( 35+ years hunting ) couldn't locate it without any problems and that I must be very inexperienced or a beginner because I didn't see/get a shot/or kill a deer from the stands that I was placed in while there. I thought that I wouldn't ever hear from him again, but I have and I have pasted his own words from his email on this website as a true representation of his character. It follows : "I forgot to mention to you mr yates that All Water Valley Hunts are semi guided. Not for novice hunters like yourself. You know damn well I walked you in to your stand the first morning you were there. I personally have been hunting for 30 years as to the "what experience" you pointy headed little henpecked turd. You are a sad man to act in the manner that you do. I bet big money you have a lot of problem relationships. For a turd like you it may seem normal.Since you are so smart pointy head-buy yourself a piece of land. That way you wont have to pay others to hunt. if you are bitter after not killing anything then you can blame yourself. You act like a fool, you look like a fool, then you must be a fool. " I rest my case against Mr Utsey, he has spoken for himself.
